Locals recognized at Sportsvisions Female Athletes of the Year banquet BY JORDAN D. HILL jhill@ledger-enquirer.com 770-894-9818, @lesports In the second annual Sportsvisions Female Athletes of the Year

banquet, guest speaker Anita Howard decided to go off script.

A Peaceful Place to Enjoy the Day

600 2nd Avenue Columbus, GA 706-322-7185

3301 13th Avenue Columbus, GA 706-992-6330

Howard, the head women’s basketball coach at Columbus State, had a list in her hand detailing everything she planned to say. Instead, she spoke from the heart, engaging the audience throughout her time at the podium. Howard discussed a number of topics in Thursday’s luncheon honoring 50 athletes from 23 local high schools. She spoke about “lead-hers” in women’s athletics and also about female athletes shaping the world around them, which elicited some audience participation from Northside softball player Hannah George.

Howard’s message to the room full of aspiring female athletes was clear: The task in front of you is not easy, but with the right work ethic, you can accomplish what you set out to do. “We always have to fight a little bit harder,” Howard said. “It is what it is. You have to be prepared.”

“It’s an honor, and it’s something that’s much needed,” Jones said. “Dale and I both grew up in this community, and we understand what it’s like to see your name in the paper, be recognized and see yourself on television. It’s an extension of what we were doing on the boys side of things. These young ladies are not only awesome on the courts and on the fields, but they are exceptional in the classroom.”

BLACK CRACKER BASEBALL

VISTA CENTER

2500 Buena Vista Road Columbus, GA 31906

The Georgia BlackCrackers Baseball Program was established in 2001 initially as the Eastern Hurricanes. The Hurricanes were a baseball team playing in the Eastern Little League. Many of the players were deficient in baseball which often depended upon the Northern Little League for adequate baseball equipment. The Hurricanes consistently won their division in the Eastern Little League. However, the District 8 Little League would not allow the Hurricanes to participate in the city’s Jack Cook Tournament and no explanation was given as to why these players were not allowed to participate. Nevertheless, in 2006, the Pioneer League would host wood bat tournaments in which the Hurricanes would participate. Sadly, it is during this time where racism was experienced firsthand. Many of the players would be addressed with insulting and hurtful language

which resulted in many players wanting to quit baseball. Due to the harsh language, the motto of the team took on a new meaning which stated “whatever don’t kill us will make us stronger.” Thus, the Hurricanes began to venture into travel baseball. In only the second year as a travel team (2008), the Hurricanes posted a 72-17 USSSA record and defeated the Mighty East Cobb Titans in a championship game at the East Cobb Complex. Again, the Hurricane players were addressed with hurtful language which was not desirable or tasteful. After competing in the USSSA WorldSeries in Cullman Alabama in 2010, losing in the championship game against Roger Clemons’ son’s team The Texas Yankees, the Hurricanes players were again addressed with language which was colorful and demeaning. Afterward, which was the third time of being degraded, we had a team meeting which included the players, the coaching staff and me (Eric Anthony). As a result of this meeting, we changed our name from the East Georgia Hurricanes to the Georgia BlackCrackers. I knew this name would gather much attention and place a spotlight on our team and program. Nonetheless, we started on this travel ball journey to earn scholarships and to quiet those who badgered my players with racial slurs throughout their Little League journey. We decided as a team to train hard, practice hard and to play hard so that beating us would become hard. The following year, in 2011, the first year we wore the BlackCrackers name, we won the USSSA Global World Series in Mississippi. Tre’von Dorsey won the tournament Pitching M.V.P and Josh Anthony was named the tournament M.V.P. Again, the BlackCrackers were called hurtful and degraded names. Finally, someone asked the question: “Why do you guys call yourselves BlackCrackers? Are you being funny or racist, which is it?” I was elated to answer their questions. The BlackCrackers team researched its name from the Old Negro Leagues where Atlanta had a team called the Atlanta BlackCrackers and from that day forward, the Georgia BlackCrackers have been a perennial power in travel baseball: 3 USSSA World Series championships, 1 Camsports World Series Championship, 1 USTA National Championship, 1 IBC World Series championship, and 2 top 50 finishes in the Perfect Game national rankings.

Currently, the BlackCrackers organization have 51 kids playing college baseball with 46 of those players on a financial baseball scholarship package. Justin Ellison and Josh Anthony (former BlackCrackers’ players) both played baseball at Western Oklahoma State College, both earned 1st team All-American honors and both were drafted by the Atlanta Braves in succeeding years in MLB’s Professional Draft. Justin was drafted in 2015 and Josh was drafted in 2016. Justin’s professional team, the Rome Braves just competed and won its championship in the minors and Josh (declined the draft offer from the Braves) continues his collegiate baseball at Auburn University. In 2016, Sam Anthony, Jarette Lee and Mykel Page earned Pre-season All-American honors from the Perfect Game and continue their baseball careers at the Collegiate Level. Sam continues his baseball journey at Western Oklahoma State College, Jarette Lee continues his baseball journey at the University of Pennsylvania and Mykel Page (after graduating this year from Hardaway High School) will continue his baseball journey at Alabama Southern Community College. In 2017, Waggener Davidson, Kevin Henry Jr., and Jonathan Manibusan have been named Perfect Game Pre-season All-Americans. Brandon Bynam (Brewton Parker College) earned 1st team all-defensive accolades. Jalin Thomas (Andrew College) earned in-coming freshman of the year. Several BlackCrackers players have been named to the Perfect Game All-Tournament teams (Tre’von Dorsey, R.J. Brown, Malik Mathis, Marcell Byrd, Kaleb Podger, Jalen Latta, Nyles Huling, Chandler Griggs, Jordan Manibusan, Will Reagan, Sheridan Coy, C.J. Brown, Dominique Wade, Jase Rhodes, Javier Rodriquez, Antonio Watts, Trey Seldon, Isaiah Arnold, Greg Elder, Ryan Glenn, Jordan Parker, Aaron Glenn, Sam Kyte, Doss Arnold, Isaiah Arnold and Alex Royal (just to name a few).

This year, the BlackCrackers program is responsible for 11 more players receiving baseball scholarships with 2 more offers pending which will raise our total to 62 players receiving baseball LOI’s. “Whatever don’t kill us, will make us stronger.” The most significant thing about BlackCrackers baseball is this program has suffered for the lack of monetary contribution. Many of these players could not and can not afford to play travel baseball. Except for sponsorship from the coaches and select parents and Wild Bill’s Pawn Shop several of these kids baseball dreams would not have been realized. With the grace of God and prayer, were going to continue helping kids realize their dream in baseball.
