District Attorney Julia Slater, What Is The Hold Up?

According to the street committee it’s time for District Attorney Julia Slater to; as the proverbial saying goes, “fish or cut bait”. On February 6, 2019 an investigation into the Invictus Transformational Wellness Center, which is owned by Muscogee County Marshal Greg Countryman, was launched at the request of the Muscogee County District Attorney’s Office. The investigation was initially requested by the Child Advocacy Center in Atlanta but required assistance from the DA’s office to formally make the request. The investigation was requested to find: 1) Whether or not any of the children have been subjected to physical or mental abuse by staff and 2) Whether or not there is a lack of supervision by staff contributing to the delinquency of the children. The street committee has learned that the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) concluded their investigation on March 25, 2019 and subsequently turned over the results to the Muscogee County District attorney Julia slater. Allegedly, according to the report, the group home

as well as Marshal Greg Countryman has been cleared of all allegations.

that was turned over to your office on April 2, 2019. Julia, as I have mentioned to you, I’m trying to move forward and clear my name and my business of the personal attacks and false accusations. I understand your workload is heavy. However, I would have hoped this investigation would have been a priority with your office. Please advise.” It is not a stretch to surmise that the reason for the delay is to taint and perhaps deter Countryman’s recent announcement that he is running for Muscogee County sheriff in 2020.

When reached by the street committee Marshal Countryman had this to say; “I’ve been in law enforcement for 28 years and I know who’s behind what’s going on... when you try to take something that is not legitimate and try to make it legitimate by involving a state agency, that doesn’t hold a lot of weight with me. I know what the truth is and I would ask that the District Attorney would release the GBI’s findings so this community can move forward knowing the facts.” Well Julia, please tell us what you are waiting for, what’s the hold up?

However, three months later, the District Attorney still refuses to share those results with the public. Finally after months of asking Slater to share those results so the community can be assured that his name has been cleared Countryman sent her the following email: “Julia: I pray all is well with you. This email is a follow-up to our conversation when we spoke at the restaurant on April 5, 2019 regarding the preliminary G.B.I. investigation. The G.B.I. turned over their investigation and findings to your office on April 2, 2019. You stated you wanted to allow your assistant time to review the file and you would subsequently get back with me the following week. I contacted you a month later, you stated, you had not decided on the file. We spoke on the phone two weeks after that and you stated the same. I spoke with you on June 6, and at the NAACP Event on the 13th. You stated you would let me know the following week after you review the file. Julia, I have not heard from you regarding this G.B.I. investigation

Family Reunion

During the summer months I am always reminded of the 1975 song made popular by the O’Jay’s, “Family Reunion”. its touching lyrics put to a smooth, mellow, catchy beat, to this day makes me feel like calling my family up and telling them how much I love them every time I hear it.

Recently, while riding down the street, I pulled up to a stoplight and the driver next to me, with his windows down, had the song blaring on his radio. I rushed to tune my radio in to the same station. Finding it, I looked over to the driver next to me and smiled. As the light turned green, we nodded at each other that “Old School”

nod. That nod that you young, “Dirt Off my Shoulder”, “My Neck, My Back”, “Shake it Like a Salt Shaker”, hip hoppers wouldn’t know anything about, that nod that longs for a time “when music was music.”

As I rode, a lump began to grow in my throat listening to Walter “break it down” talking about “I wish Grandma could see the whole family. I sure miss her face and her warm tender embrace.” “And if Grandpa was here I know he’d be smiling for me a tear to see what he has done all the offspring from his daughters and sons.” He continues with “You know the family is the solution to the world’s problems today.

Now, let’s take a look at the family”. It was then, I realized if she were living today, grandma’s embrace wouldn’t be so warm and tender, and Grandpa wouldn’t be smiling but rather crying asking himself why he didn’t use that “raincoat” when he should have. I can see them both sitting in their rocking chairs shaking their heads looking down on them in disbelief and disgust: • At the daughter who thinks her family is better than her other siblings. Each reunion she has to show up in the latest, automobile, latest fashions, and brags about the jobshe has and the schools her children are attending, how her daughter, the model, is “traveling the world with her friends and won’t be able to attend the reunion this year” and about the house she just bought etc. • At the daughter who has the most education, and lets everyone know it. You know the one who is now forty-eight years of age, single, no kids, never held a job in her life, working on her Doctorate dissertation still in school because she’s afraid to come into the real world and get a real job. The one with all that education but no common sense and no man. • At the son who can’t keep a job, but can always find one • At the son who can’t find a job and who is jealous of the one who keeps throwing them away • At the twenty year-old niece who has five babies by five different daddies. Of course, they are all at the reunion running around, knocking over stuff, crying, kicking the dog, and biting each other. You get the picture. • At the family that didn’t send their portion of the money to cover the expenses of the reunion but shows up any way, six deep. With that “and nobody better not say nothin’ to me about no money either” atti-

tude. They come in the door asking ‘When do we eat.” • At the mother who initiates “drama” by inviting her son’s ex-wife to the family reunion because she likes her better than the wife he has now. • At Ray Ray, the cousin who has been in and out of jail, and has everybody making sure his or her purses and wallets are secured. Every time he moves everyoeveryone in the room asks simultaneously “where are you going?” • At the old uncle that is supposed to be blind but can see what he wants to see • At the little nephew everyone calls “special” because he can always be found playing games with the little girls. • At the “Fast-tailed” little niece that knows too much for her own good. The one everyone forgot was in the room until she tries to contribute to grown folks conversation. At which time she is instructed to go outside and play with the other kids. • At the Uncle who makes everyone uncomfortable by bringing his “special” male friend to the reunion and then spends the day catering to his every need. Fixing his plate, bringing him his drinks. Feeding each other, whispering to each other. Just sickening enough to make a brother not want any peach cobbler. • At how all the female relatives are swooning over the cousins with the “good hair” and Green eyes. • At how all the older male relatives can’t get over how well “little Ty’Keshia has “filled out”, now that she’s turned eighteen... • At the Son who brings his “White” girlfriend to the reunion which of course brings out the “Sista’” in the Sisters who could give less than a “Flying Flip” if she hears them talk about her or not. • At the alcoholic Uncle who

3

gets drunk and starts airing everyone’s “dirty laundry”, such as the family with the new car every year is really a rental, that the home they are bragging about is big but empty. They are so in debt they can’t afford any furniture. And to top that off, they are renting it. The children they brag on? One is kicked out of school because of academics and the other isn’t attending the reunion because she’s traveling the world with her friends. The problem is she’s so strung out on drugs they don’t even know where in the “world” she is. Of course after they ran from the room crying and threatening to kick his “$%#” he stood around saying, “What? What? Black folks need to stop perpetrating. Always talking about what they got”. The next thing you know he‘s in a corner sleep with a Corona bottle tipped to the right, spilling beer on himself and the carpet.

And of course there is always: • the sister who is sleeping with her sister’s husband • the sister who is sleeping with her brother’s wife • the son who has been married so many times folks stopped going to his weddings. Every reunion he introduces the family to a new wife. This year he’s with wife number six. • the runny Jell-O with what they think are raisins ninety-six year-old Auntie insisted on making for her family. To this day no one is sure if they were raisins or roaches. As Grandma and Grandpa look at the “mess” they made, their expressions of disbelief and disgust turns into love and understanding. After all, their family is no different from any other family. And if you compare it to some, it could be worse. Besides at least they are together for this “Family Reunion”.

THE DR. M. DELMAR EDWARDS BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM PRESENTS THE MUSIC

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier Under the direction of the legendary Jacquelyn Egins the “Musical Magic of Motown” is the compilation of popular music from the height of Motown in the 1960s. It depicts the best of Motown in storybook form while highlighting the historical development of this successful music company.

Since 1959 Motown has produced first class performing groups and vocalists with top ten record sales in Detroit that surrounded the nation and encompassed the world. The best music from a generation has become the soundtrack of a nation and is now celebrating sixty (60) years of musical splendor. You will be entertained by local artists as they bring to life renditions from Motown headliners like the Jacksons, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, The Four Tops, The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Martha and The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight and The Pips and more. All proceeds from “Musical Magic of Motown” will go towards the The Dr. M. Delmar Edwards Black History

Museums capital campaign.

The Museum, named after the first Black surgeon in Columbus, Georgia is poised to become not only a museum but an educational resource of local and regional stature. Phase one of the Dr. M. Delmar Edwards Black History Museum is the completion of a spacious new museum and the development of strategic partnerships with colleges, school systems, and other cultural and educational organizations that will expand the museums outreach and impact.

Phase Two of the campaign will complete the process, finishing the interior spaces of the building, fabricating and installing signature exhibits, and opening this much-anticipated museum to the public. Included in the stunning new facility will be ample collection storage areas, extensive galleries for both changing and permanent exhibits, a multi-purpose room and a museum store.

The impact of the new Dr. M. Delmar Edwards Black History Museum will be felt in many ways and in many areas. The museum, when completed, will act as the anchor and centerpiece of the

Liberty District that already includes the restored historic Liberty Theatre.

The Dr. M. Delmar Edwards Black History Museum’s presence will also have a significant positive economic impact on Columbus, Georgia and the tri-city area. In 2006, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, tourism contributed $257 million to the Macon economy, supported over 3,000 jobs, and generated $7.5 million and $10.3 million respectively in local and state tax revenue. But as impressive as these economic numbers are, the new Dr. M. Delmar

Bridgette Russell...

Director of Marketing and Public Relations, The Columbus Museum

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier With a love for the arts and a passion for nonprofits, Bridgette Russell joined The Columbus Museum staff as Director of Marketing and Public Relations in March 2018. Her role is to oversee promotion of exhibitions, programs, and events of the Museum locally and regionally. “As a native of Chicago, going to museums and cultural venues was routine,” Russell says. “I just think it is incredible that The Columbus Museum has so much available to the community – for free. It is awesome to help share that story.”

Bridgette grew up in Chicago with the goal of being a journalist. She is a product of an HBCU, having received her degree in print journalism from Texas Southern University in Houston. For the first several years of her career, she worked as a reporter at newspapers and digital publications in Texas, Ohio, and Illinois. In 2010, she made the switch to marketing and public relations, as a consultant with a focus on helping nonprofits learn to market themselves. “I have always loved working with nonprofit organizations,” Bridgette says, “probably stemming from when I was a reporter. Nonprofits always had wonderful, genuine stories to tell.”

Bridgette moved to Columbus in 2014 and was immediately charmed by the southern friendliness. Her first job here was on the communications team at Goodwill Industries of the Southern Rivers, Inc., where she helped manage public relations, advertising, and social media, before joining the senior team at the Museum. Bridgette completed her MBA with a concentration in marketing in 2018 on a full scholarship from Goodwill Industries International, Inc. She currently lives in Columbus with her husband, Sean, their daughter, Sidney. She is on the advisory board of The Salvation Army of Columbus, Ga. and is a proud member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

“Working at the Museum – and living in Columbus! – has truly been an amazing experience,” Bridgette said, “and I am excited about where we are going next.”

18 de Julio 2019

Pagina 5 Homan also accepted an invitation to speak at an event hosted by CIS in June 2018. At the time, former Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY) urged Homan to cancel his plans to meet with the group and sent him a letter that stated, “It is highly inappropriate for a senior official of a federal agency to engage with a group that spreads such abhorrent viewpoints, including white supremacism and anti-Semitism.” Homan proceeded with his plan to attend and was met by a group of protesters outside the event. Homan also played a key role in family separations. He sent a memo to former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen that included recommendations on how to operationalize the policy; the memo stated that DHS could “permissibly direct the separation of parents or legal guardians and minors held in immigration detention so that the parent or legal guardian can be prosecuted.” Thousands of children were separated from their parents, and an untold number remain separated today. Additionally, Homan has been known to issue public anti-immigrant remarks. In 2017, Homan told Congress that every undocumented immigrant “should look over [their] shoulder” because the agency “shouldn’t wait for them to become a criminal.” Homan’s legacy at ICE also includes disparagement of sanctuary cities and nearly tripling the number of noncriminal arrests of undocumented immigrants, leading to more families being ripped apart across the country. Ken Cuccinelli Earlier this month, Ken Cuccinelli was named the acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Cuccinelli was one of the founders of the nativist group State Legislators for Legal Immigration (SLLI). The mission of the group was to eliminate “all economic attractions and incentives (including, but not limited to: public benefits, welfare, education and employment opportunities) for illegal aliens, as well as securing our borders against unlawful invasion.” According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the SLLI has also been described as the legislative arm of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), an organization described as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, based on the group’s close ties to white supremacists.

For many years, first as a public official and later as a private citizen, Cuccinelli has espoused and promoted anti-immigrant views and policies. As a Republican state senator in Virginia, Cuccinelli introduced legislation that would have allowed an employer to fire an employee ineligible for unemployment benefits. Additionally, Cuccinelli led an effort as a state senator to call a constitutional convention to overturn the 14th Amendment’s birthright citizenship clause for the children of undocumented immigrants. Given Cuccinelli’s antiimmigrant ideology and restrictive views on citizenship, placing him in charge of the agency responsible for adjudicating naturalization applications risks undermining core constitutional protections. As Virginia attorney general, Cuccinelli famously compared immigrants to pests during a radio interview: [T]he D.C. City Council passed a new law, or a triumph of animal rights over human health, where those pest control people … aren’t allowed to kill the rats. … Anyway, it is worse than our immigration policy—you can’t break up families. Or raccoons or all the rest and you can’t even kill them. Unbelievable. At a time when thousands of families have been ripped apart by DHS personnel—and as more continue to be separated at the border—Cuccinelli’s past use of dehumanizing language and his vigorous support for breaking up immigrant families should be red flags. Julie Kirchner Prior to becoming the current ombudsman for the USCIS, Julie Kirchner was adviser to Customs and Border Protection (CBP). In that position, Kirchner helped draft the Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment (RAISE) Act, a punitive bill that aimed to slash legal immigration in half by limiting the possibility of family reunification, cutting refugee admissions in half, and eliminating the diversity visa program. Before entering government, Kirchner was the longtime executive director for FAIR, an organization founded by John Tanton, a staunch supporter of dangerous anti-immigrant ideologies grounded in eugenics and population control. Tanton is known in the anti-immigrant movement for writing “The Case for Passive Eugenics,” in which he pro-

moted a passive form of eugenics and the practice of restricting childbearing to between ages 20 and 35. As previously mentioned, the Southern Poverty Law Center has designated FAIR as a hate group. Under Kirchner’s leadership, FAIR lobbied extensively in support of bills such as the Security and Fairness Enhancement for America (SAFE America) Act, which would have ended the diversity visa program. After the pro-immigrant marches that took place in March 2006, Kirchner wrote the following for FAIR’s newsletter: The sight of millions of illegal immigrants and U.S.-born citizen children marching under Mexican flags and asserting their identities as something other than American is very troubling and should be seen as a wake-up call to the political leadership of this country. The United States could well face a situation similar to what has been taking place in France and other parts of Europe, where the children of the last generation of immigrants not only do not identify with the societies in which they live, but are openly hostile to them. Kirchner’s anti-immigrant views and past leadership role at FAIR have been regarded as a victory for anti-immigrant extremists. Mark Morgan In May, President Trump appointed Mark Morgan as the new acting director of ICE. In his role, Morgan has appeared regularly on Fox News. In one appearance, he attempted to defend the use of child incarceration, saying, “They’re not cages. They’re actually really nice facilities. And there are chain-link fence within the facilities, but it’s designed so the Border Patrol agents working there can provide safety and security for the people that are there.” However, journalists have called the facilities cages; for example, the Associated Press has written, “Inside an old warehouse in South Texas, hundreds of children wait in a series of cages created by metal fencing. One cage had 20 children inside. Scattered about are bottles of water, bags of chips and large foil sheets intended to serve as blankets.” Experts at the American Psychological Association warned President Trump that “separat[ing] children from their parents inflicts further trauma. This is cruel to

children and hugely disruptive to their sense of safety and well-being.” Morgan has also given credibility to militia groups that have detained hundreds of asylum seekers at gunpoint, saying in an interview: Citizens should not be arming themselves … and carrying out law enforcement duties. This is bad thing for everybody. But let’s peel that back. Why are they doing it? Because they’re there and they see what the rest of us are seeing, that the southwest border is being overrun. Border Patrol and other law enforcement entities there are overwhelmed and they feel like they have no choice. Under Morgan’s leadership, ICE prepared a series of now-postponed raids targeting more than 2,000 people. During one of the many interviews that Morgan has given on the massive operation, he said, “This is not about fear … No one is instilling fear in anyone. This is about the rule of law and maintaining the integrity of the system.” Yet although Morgan claims that he is not instilling fear, immigrants can certainly interpret as a threat the possibility of 2,000 families being ripped apart indefinitely. Conclusion Anti-immigrant extremists in the United States have sought to influence the immigration debate for decades, and under the Trump administration, they have gained more influence than ever. Through positions at DHS, these extremists have normalized policies and ideologies rooted in bigotry; this only makes it harder to promote reasonable solutions. Dehumanization of immigrants goes beyond party politics. Until these ideas are rejected and those promoting them are removed from positions of power, the integrity of the U.S. immigration system will remain in jeopardy. The Anti-Immigrant Extremists in Charge of the U.S. Immigration System By Jessica Cobian

The anti-immigrant movement has increasingly gained influence over the past decade, reaching a high point during the Trump administration. Top administrative positions in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have been filled by right-wing extremists, many with close ties to hate groups. As a result, anti-immigrant policies that used to be regarded as extreme have been normalized, and dehumanizing rhetoric toward immigrants has become rampant in mainstream media. The new wave of anti-immigrant extremists leading DHS is responsible for overseeing the nation’s entire immigration system, from adjudicating visa petitions and applications for citizenship and asylum to handling arrests and deportations. These extremists have also played a role in, or defended, policies that outrage many Americans, such as family

separation, the increased use of ICE raids, and the disparagement of locations that have sanctuary policies. Here are some of the people now in charge of immigration policy at DHS.
