New YMCA Proposed

According to the street committee, there has been opposition to the proposed location of the new YMCA. One resident, however, see’s the big picture:

“I am ecstatic to learn of the proposed new branch of the YMCA in Midtown on Rigdon Road. It is much needed, will be a highly valued resource and would clearly represent a win for the community. I strongly encourage The Muscogee County School Board to sell the 5.31 acres at 1282 Rigdon Road to the Columbus YMCA. I also encourage Mayor Henderson, Columbus City Council, and the Columbus Aquatic Center to join with the YMCA in public/private collaborations to share resources. The facility’s goal is to provide recreational, educational, health care, and child care opportunities for Columbus residents. A Capital Campaign will be needed to fund completion of the project. I encourage citizens, civic groups and corporate entities to join the Columbus YMCA Board of

The Street Committee

Directors in expeditiously raising the necessary funds. I am a stakeholder in this project. My family has lived in the Lindsey Creek and Carver Heights subdivisions for over sixty years. My mother taught at the original Rigdon Road School for decades. Forty years ago, my grandparents supported the successful efforts of Ardahlia Mack to build and open the community center at 1306 W. Lindsey Drive that would be demolished. I have been a member of the Aquatic Center for five years. While there have been improvements in our community, we need and deserve more! Let us actively work with YMCA CEO Mario Davis to bring this project to completion. It is clear to me that he has a heart for our community and is sensitive to the needs of the Lindsey Creek, Carver Heights and East Wynnton communities. I am confident that purposes and plans for the new YMCA will more than compensate for the loss of the Ardahlia Mack Community Center. - Janet C. Bussey, PhD

Wake Up My People, Stop Wearing And Driving Your Money! “It’s not your salary that makes you rich; it’s your spending habits.”

Here are some facts: • 96.1 percent of the 1.2 million households in the top one percent by income were white. • America’s 100 richest people control more wealth than the entire Black population. • The 5 largest white landowners own more land than all Black people combined. • The average Black family would need 228 years to build the wealth of a white family today. Buying power by demographics: • White – $12.1 trillion • Black – $1.3 trillion • Asian – $1.0 trillion • Hispanic - $1.5 trillion • Native American - $114.6 billion • Multiracial - $224.7 billion

We’ve all heard the statistics: A dollar circulates: • 6 hours in the Black community • 17 days in the White community • 20 days in the Jewish community • 30 days in the Asian community

So many of us spend our lives, either consciously or subconsciously trying to “keep up with the Joneses. For those young folks who may have never heard the term before let me help you out.

“Keeping up with the Joneses” is an idiom referring to the comparison to one's neighbor as a benchmark for social class or the accumulation of material goods. To fail to "keep up with the Joneses" is perceived as demonstrating socio-economic or cultural inferiority. It’s a phrase made famous by a 1913 comic strip, Keeping up with the Joneses, created by “Pop” Momand.

In our current “social media” concious society Facebook, and instagram allows not just the rich and famous but ordinary, everyday people to create a false perception of their actual existence. I do believe social media has its benefits but I don’t think I am alone in believing that many people who spend their time on social media are seeking confir-

3

mation of their social and economic status.

Brittany Kline, in her article entitled “The Truth About Keeping up with the Joneses” notes; “With the rise of the internet, signals come in the form of the colleges we attend, cars, houses, clothes and other material goods. Social media is a distorted reality that has created a deluded sense of self-worth and value.”

A recent survey with 1,012 respondents conducted by Harris Poll revealed that Americans experience feelings of envy when they see friends and colleagues show off their lavish lifestyle on social media. About 40% of the respondents admitted that seeing other people’s purchases and vacations heightened their own desire to consider similar purchases and vacations. About 21% of respond e n t s revealed that they consider certain activities and purchases based on how it will make them look on social media.

The numbers I have spelled out in this column I hope are helpful but the point I want my people to understand is that at some point and time we need to stop wearing and driving our money and start saving our money. Don’t get me wrong you have the absolute right to do whatever you want with the money you make. I’m just saying take a look around, do you think “The Joneses” are going to come to your aide when your car is about to be repossessed or your house is up for foreclosure? We all would like to be rich but remember; “It’s not your salary that makes you rich; it’s your spending habits.”
