High school baseball is finally back in the Chattahoochee Valley. With the local teams starting their seasons, there’s no better time to look at the area’s top players. Here is the 2018 Dandy Dozen baseball squad: Garrett Brown, pitcher, Manchester - Brown was a man on a mission on the mound for the Blue Devils in 2017, throwing 40.1 innings, striking out 55 and posting a 2.43 ERA. His big arm — his fastball has been clocked at 89 mph — helped Brown sign with Georgia in November.

Waggener Davidson, pitcher/third baseman, Northside - Davidson led the way for Northside at the plate and on the rubber last season, posting a team-high batting average (.355), innings pitched (61.1), wins (6) and strikeouts (46). Northside lost some talent from 2017, but Davidson’s return should keep the Patriots in the hunt. Hunter Donaldson, second baseman, Russell County - Donaldson was a freshman in 2017, but that didn’t stop him from putting up a .354 batting average with 40 hits and 39 RBIs. Colleges like Auburn, Mississippi State and Alabama are already interested in Donaldson, and it isn’t hard to see why. Hunter Duke, third baseman, Hardaway - Duke was an important piece in Hardaway’s run to the Class 4A quarterfinals last spring, as he batted .317 with 32 hits, 3 home runs and 21 RBIs. Hardaway graduated one of its best hitters in Mykel Page, and Duke is a good candidate to replace his production. Slade Gorman, catcher/outfielder, Central - Gorman got hit after hit in his junior season — 43 to be exact — on his way to a .377 batting average with 5 home runs and 22 RBIs. Gorman is one of only four returning starters for Central this season, but there’s little reason to doubt he will replicate his past success. Gorman has committed to play baseball at CVCC.
Jonathan Manibusan, pitcher/second baseman/right fielder, Hardaway - Like several players in this year’s Dandy Dozen, Manibusan came through for his team in a number of ways. Along with his team-high .355 batting average, Manibusan was effective on the mound, throwing 61.1 innings, striking out 69 batters and putting up a 1.71 ERA. Manibusan looks to be Hardaway’s top starter, and his play will likely go a long way in the Hawks’ push for another strong season. Alex Marquand, catcher, Shaw - Shaw was in the thick of the region race last spring, and Marquand was a big reason why. He was one of the hardest outs in Columbus in a junior year in which he hit .425 with 34 hits, 1 home run and 21 RBIs. Marquand has committed to Georgia Highlands. Hunter Milam, pitcher, Russell County - Almost no one could touch Milam on the mound in 2017, as the lefty struck out 114 batters and posted a 1.13 ERA in 68 innings. His efforts were huge for a young team that made the first round of the Class 6A playoffs and earned him All-Bi-City 4A-7A Pitcher of the Year honors. Milam, whose fastball has touched 90 mph, has committed to Memphis. Andrew Tillery, pitcher, Glenwood - Tillery is a new face to the Glenwood program, having transferred from Shaw. In his junior year, Tillery stood out with the Raiders despite injuries, striking out 43 hitters and compiling a team-low 1.87 ERA. Tillery has signed to play at N.C. State. Robbie Tillman, center fielder, Columbus - Down the stretch of the 2017 season, Tillman repeatedly delivered the big hit the Blue Devils needed. Tillman had a .324 batting average as a sophomore to go with 34 hits, 19 RBIs and a team-high 11 stolen bases. Tillman has already gotten looks from schools such as Georgia, North Carolina and Texas. When you watch him in action, there’s little question why.
Trent Grantham, pitcher/first baseman, Columbus - Grantham was Columbus’ go-to pitcher in 2017, a season in which he threw 76.1 innings, posted a 2.20 ERA and struck out 62 batters. Grantham did just as well with a bat in his hand, hitting .290 with 29 hits and 12 RBIs. The 6-foot-5 Grantham has received some interest from some SEC schools, including Georgia and Ole Miss. John Kropaczewski pitcher/second baseman/third baseman, Jordan - No matter where Kropaczewski was on the diamond last season, he produced. Along with hitting the first outside-the-park home run at Jordan in years, he managed a .419 batting average with 36 hits, 3 home runs and 35 RBIs and was named the All-BiCity 1A-3A Player of the Year. 4 | Spring Edition 2018
Central’s Slade Gorman, Jordan’s John Kropaczewski and Columbus’ Trent Grantham are three of the 2018 Dandy Dozen baseball team Darrell Roaden; Jordan D. Hill Spring Edition 2018 | 5

Atlanta Super Bowl LIII Host Committee Officially On The Clock After NFL Handoff Ceremony MINNEAPOLIS (February 5, 2018) – The Atlanta Super Bowl LIII Host Committee today was officially handed host committee responsibilities for next year’s Super Bowl from the National Football League and Minnesota Host Committee in a press conference at the Mall of America. Super Bowl LIII will be played in Atlanta on February 3, 2019, at the spectacular MercedesBenz Stadium. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell attended the ceremony, along with members of the Atlanta Super Bowl LIII Host Committee, including Executive Director Carl Adkins and Chief Operating Officer Brett Daniels, as well as President of the Atlanta Sports Council and Super Bowl LIII Host Committee Board of Directors Dan Corso. Representing the City of Atlanta at the ceremony was new Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. “We are officially on the clock for Super Bowl LIII and we couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity to showcase Atlanta to the rest of world,” said Daniels. “We are already a full year into our planning process and know everyone will feel the incredible passion and pride of our city as we intend to put together the best Super Bowl experience ever.” “Today is a significant day for the Atlanta

community as we are 363 days away from the Super Bowl returning to our great city, state and region,” said Corso. “We have been circling this date on our calendars and we are thrilled it is finally here.” The Atlanta Super Bowl LIII Host Committee introduced a video at the press conference titled, “We Are ATL,” featuring popular Atlanta musician, actor, philanthropist and devoted NFL fan, Ludacris. The video also included Atlanta residents in locations around the city describing what the words ATL mean to them. Commissioner Goodell delivered a ceremonial NFL football to the Atlanta Host Committee while unveiling the official Super Bowl LIII logo. The focus of the Super Bowl LIII color palette will be electric red and deep blue. These colors represent the bright, bold and vibrant energy of Atlanta’s thriving culture and the dramatic architecture of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Together, the NFL’s color palette, photography and graphic elements will harness that energy and illuminate the way to Super Bowl LIII, the brightest moment of the 2018 season. Super Bowl LIII marks the third Super Bowl hosted by Atlanta and first since 2000. The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Buffalo Bills, 3024, in Super Bowl XXVIII at the Georgia Dome on January 30, 1994, and the St. Louis Rams
edged the Tennessee Titans, 23-16, in Super Bowl XXXIV on January 30, 2000, also at the Georgia Dome. AtlSuperBowl53.com is the official website for the Host Committee with @atlsuperbowl53 serving as the social media handle for Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The Atlanta Super Bowl LIII logo and additional press materials can be downloaded here. About Atlanta Super Bowl LIII Host Committee The Atlanta Super Bowl LIII Host Committee is the liaison between the National Football League, the City of Atlanta and the local community. Formed in 2017 under the Championship Hosting Division of the Atlanta Sports Council, the Host Committee is responsible for helping to plan, organize and support activities and events that will enhance the Super Bowl LIII experience for the city, state and region. MOREHOUSE
COLLEGE BASKETBALL STORY Grady Brewer, head coach of Morehouse College’s basketball team, knew what kind of team he had even if those making preseason predictions didn’t. The result was as gratifying a season that the Tigers have ever had. The Tigers were picked to finish fourth in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s East Division behind Benedict College, Claflin College and Clark-Atlanta University. That’s right. Fourth. Little did they know what was ahead. But Brewer knew. “I kind of smiled a little bit at that,” Brewer said of the prediction. “Because last year we won 18 games and had no one graduate. No one left. We had the top seven guys coming back. I kind of had an idea we’d be pretty good with the kids we had coming back. And thought we did well in getting Keith Heard, and the guys had gotten better over the summer. I thought we’d have one more loss than we have and that we’d win the SIAC tournament. But things don’t always go the way you want them to.” Yet so much went so right for the Tigers. It was a season of streaks with them winning their first 18, then after a loss winning their next seven before ending their season with two losses — the last in the South Region of the NCAA Division II playoffs. In all, Morehouse finished the season with a 25-3 record, a regular season SIAC title and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA South. Not bad for a supposed fourthplace team. “The guys just responded,” Brewer said. “We caught lightning in a bottle this year. We won the first 18 out of the gate. Had an L hung on us by Claflin University (72-85 at Claflin), then we won seven in a row to close the season. And then in the SIAC Tournament, had another L hung on us by Claflin University (77-69). “What a lot of people don’t understand about basketball is that it’s a game of matchups a lot of times. Not only did (Claflin) give us two Ls, they gave CAU two Ls, and gave it to them in the conference championship. Claflin is a good basketball team. We had four good basketball teams in the SIAC this year — Claflin, Morehouse, CAU and Benedict. All won over 20 games this season. The committee had to choose three teams (Morehouse, CAU and Claflin) to go to the South Region. We earned the top seed in the region by going 25-2.” But what could have been. In their first meeting with CAU, a triple overtime 97-96 thriller on the road, the win was tempered by what Morehouse lost. In the first half, Martravious Little went out with a knee injury and was lost for the season. He was the heart of the team, yet the team barely flinched. 26 | Spring Edition 2018
“You can’t just lose 12 points and three rebounds and the leadership that Martravious Little had for his teammates,” Brewer said. “He was a leader on the floor. When we called defenses from the bench, he was the one to make sure they were implemented on the floor. That was huge. Huge. But, that being said, I think we responded as well as we could have responded with him being injured. “While injured, he’s been essentially an assistant coach. He knows the system. He’s been here four years as a starter. I thought that was monumental him coming to the games and being able to do that. He brings that energy and effort.” That was missing in the SIAC tournament. In the Claflin game, we had a chance to win the ballgame, but didn’t shoot free throws well. That had nothing to do with someone not being on the floor. That had something to do with not executing the free shot. We were 12-for-21, and Claflin was 22-for-26. There goes the ballgame. Even though we did not play well, and Tyrius Walker did not have
“For me, when you lose, you listen. When you listen, you learn” his best game, you got to make the free shots. You’ve got to make layups. And you’ve got to execute and rebound in tournament play. And we didn’t do that in the Claflin game.” But even in the Claflin loss in the SIAC semifinals, Brewer saw the benefit. He said it refocused his team. “A blessing in disguise,” Brewer said. “Because I look at it all over. You talk about winning 18 in a row. Losing one then winning seven in a row. For me, when you lose, you listen. When you listen, you learn. So, this was the best opportunity to coach them going into the NCAA playoffs. “I asked the kids what our record is, and they told me it was 0-0. That’s right. It’s March Madness, and they have to come out with the mindset to conquer and destroy and put them to sleep. It’s all about survive and advance. Survive and advance. Enthusiasm, energy, effort and emotion. The teams that have that will win out in the tournament. Against Florida Southern the mindset is to win each half. It we win each half, we win the game.” In that Florida Southern game, Morehouse won the first half. And inexplicably, after trailing the Tigers by 21 points, the Mocs won the second half to force a never should have happened overtime. The Mocs stayed aggressive and pulled off the upset 97-96 to end Morehouse’s season to end the Tigers’ first playoff appearance since 2004. “I’m proud of the kids and their effort,” Brewer said. “It was a terrific season and they should be very proud.”
