MARCH 12, 2020 The Perfect Strategy Congratulations Mr. Thompson The Street Committee is proud to announce that finally the Black community got it right with the Municipal Court Clerks position this election cycle. Come January 1, 2021 the office of the Municipal Court will have a new Clerk, Reggie Thompson. Earlier this year Vivian Creighton Bishop, after serving 28 years as the Municipal Court Clerk, quietly announced that she would not seek reelection. Thompson entered the race on Friday March 6 the final day of qualifying as the only candidate and on May 19th he will win his race as long as he receives one (1) vote. According to the street committee this is Thompsons first foray into political arena, but he is not a newcomer to the position. For the past few years he has been training under the tutelage of Bishop. He is capable, competent and prepared to lead the department. The Street Committee believes we got it right because for the first time in 24 years there was no opposition from someone who was clearly unqualified attempting to run just because.

taken. The Black community was behind her 100%. However, after that embarrassing fiasco the community began to question her competence. And the questions continue in 2020. Why be a pawn for the White community to be used to divide us so they can conquer the Sheriffs department?

If It Ain’t Broke Don’t Fixit’ The Street Committee also offers congratulations to Superior Court Clerk State Representative Carolyn Hugley, Muscogee County School Board member and Chairperson Pat Hugley Green, State Court Judge Ben Richardson and State Representative Calvin Smyre, They too qualified without opposition

Committee had with Dr. Shirley A. Fryer, Tuskegee University’s Chief of Staff, the move of the Tuskegee Morehouse Classic, the oldest HBCU football rivalry in the country, from Columbus to Birmingham, Alabama should be finalized this week. According to the street committee the local committee, although shocked and disappointed they weree not surprised. Evidently ther has been one member serving on the committee has been pushing for the move for years. More on thius next week.

Either She Didn’t Get The Memo Or She Just Doesn’t Get It! According to the Street Committee you can file Pam Browns third attempt at becoming Sheriff of Muscogee County under “Not a Snowballs Chance in Hell”. First of all, she w o u l d b e S h e r i ff today had she had the good sense to just go down and have her fingerprints

Deja Vu All Over Again The Street Committee says; Here We Go Again! Can you say Zeph Baker? Pastor Walter Taylor is running for School Board District 7 and he is already being scrutinized for where his actual residency is. As a man of the cloth surely he is familiar with the bible verse; “write the vision, make it plain. Come on pastor Taylor, why the confusion? Just tell the truth, where do you live? You know Jesus would not be pleased to know you down here lying to his people. Lord help you if the Street Committee finds out you are being less than truthful. Only Thing Left is the Eulogy According to a conversation the Street

A VIEW FROM A PEW

How Time Flies... Your Source of Truth Since 2005 It is hard to believe that it was fifteen years ago this month, March 24, 2005, that we launched the Courier Eco Latino as the tri-cities only bilingual newspaper. Fifteen years ago, when we began, we were one of two Black owned newspapers publishing consistently in the tri-city. Fast forward fifteen years and today there is only one. Uniquely serving two growing demographics, African Americans and Hispanics, we continue to publish in both English and Spanish with articles targeted and specific to each audience. We set out on our journey to provide this community with a publication that would be the “conscious of the minority community”; a publication that deals with issues ignored by the mainstream media. Today, with an African American demographic of 50.9%, Caucasians 45.6%, Hispanics 7.7% and others 3.5%, we are no longer the “minority community”. Today we provide this community a publication that is the “conscious of the community”; a publication that continues to deal with issues ignored by the mainstream media. Our goal, from day one, has been to make our people aware of issues that impact their lives on a daily basis, so they can be more informed and make more enlightened decisions. Five thousand four hundred and seventy-five days later we continue to stay true to our mission; “To educate, enlighten, inform, empower, inspire and when appropriate entertain. As the Black press, we have a responsibility not only to be the voice of the community but when necessary an advocate for our readers. We exist because our readers depend on us for news that is relevant, reliable, and reported from a perspective that respects what’s important to them. If we don’t plead our own case, if we don’t tell our own story, if we don’t represent our own people, who will? We abdicate that responsibility and the true power of the Black press when we don’t tell the story as it is, whether it’s about someone from the White community attempting to suppress us or someone

from the Black community selling us out. It has taken a while, but we are proud of our stature in the tri-city as a respected news medium. This hasn’t been happenstance; we have worked hard to develop a reputation and respect for being this community’s “Source for the Truth”. We have accomplished this by being unapologetic and unafraid of speaking truth to power regardless of race, creed, color or political position. Believing that “sunshine is the best disinfectant” we are humble enough to accept that we only know the truth that we know, but the truth we do know, we speak it. We understand that everything you read, or the cartoons that appear in our publication may not be popular but when you are “speaking the truth” it means taking risks, it means standing for something. Words matter, used well, speaking truth effects change. Speaking of the truth, the truth is I never envisioned being a publisher of a newspaper. My goal was to work and retire as a CEO with the YMCA. Over the years, however, I have seen the Lord work miracle after miracle in my life and in this business. Today I am a living testimony that it’s not coincidence but confidence; confidence in knowing that God has placed me in this place at this time to do what He has called me to do. How do I know this? because in 2005 he asked me to step out on faith without a degree in Journalism, English or Computer Science. He told me it didn’t matter that I didn’t know how to send an email, layout or design a newspaper. He said don’t worry about not being able to speak Spanish and not having any money to start the business. I will be your source He said, “For I know the plans I have for you’ all you need is faith. On behalf of our family and staff we look forward to continuing to serve as your “Source of Truth” sans gossip, innuendo, embellishment or exaggeration.

STACEY ABRAMS LAUNCHED ‘I COUNT’ BUS TOUR

On Saturday March 7, 2020 Fair Count and founder Stacey Abrams launched the ‘I Count’ bus tour to increase awareness about the 2020 Census in Columbus georgiaq. With more than 50 stops scheduled across the state of Georgia, the ‘I Count’ bus started in Columbus and left for Laurens County for a later stop. “The 2020 Census is here and it is up to us to get counted and ensure that all of us, our families and our communities, are part of American’s narrative for the next decade,” said Abrams. “We cannot let them erase our story today or from our nation’s future. We

must get counted.” The Census results will determine the allocation of more than $1.5 trillion in resources annually through more than 300 federal programs, guide reapportionment and direct redistricting efforts throughout the nation. It is estimated that each person in Georgia accounts for roughly $3,600 per person in federal funding. These federal dollars fund efforts that impact our lives every day, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, disaster relief and more. Saturday’s kick-off was held at Carver High School in Columbus, GA and fea-

tured local partners Kids Doc on Wheels, Southwest Georgia Project Inc., Greater Columbus Urban League Young Professionals, and Black Dads Count. The bus then traveled to Dublin, GA for the Black Heritage Festival. On Sunday, the bus will be in Clayton County and will end the day in Talbot County. The “I Count” bus tour will stop in more than 50 counties between March 7th and April 5th. The stops were chosen to highlight the places labeled “Hard to Count” by the Census Bureau as they have historically been undercounted. State Representative and Chair of Fair Count’s Board of Directors Carolyn Hugley also spoke at the kick-off saying, “Georgia has been counted out for far too long. This year, an accurate count in the 2020 census is the first

step in the journey to correcting that injustice.” Founded by Stacey Abrams in 2019, Fair Count is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to partnering with hard-to-count communities to achieve a fair and accurate count of all people in Georgia and the nation in the 2020 Census and to strengthening the pathways to greater civic participation. ### About Fair Count The 2020 Census will allocate more than $1.5 trillion dollars every year to communities through hundreds of federal programs, direct reapportionment and redistricting, and guide economic development opportunities. If inaccurately represented, Georgia will lose roughly $3,600 for every person who goes uncounted.

OPINION

PAGE 11 Sweet Talk Is Cheap Talk By Brother Love Part I Courting the black vote is one thing, every Democrat entered in the upcoming state primary should have the good sense to genuinely reach out to black voters. Nevertheless, pandering, divide and conquer schemes or strategies, and all-around playing black people for fools is an entirely different matter. It is where all self-respecting, conscious black people should draw the line and start calling some people out, letting the chips fall where they may and the shoes to go on the feet they fit. If Teresa Pike Tomlinson was in your house with 15 other black women, you didn't know her, you didn't know anything in the world about her, well, as a word to the wise, I would tactfully and respectfully inform the person to really be careful who they invite into their house. Tomlinson's mesmerizing and magnifying, as it was described by an apparent devout supporter in an AJC article (February 16, 2020), is a wellcrafted and well-planned act, a performance from beginning to end. It is her own special homebrew, a premium brand of high-energy hype used to pull the wool over the eyes of black Democrats. She puts on her I Am One of You act when campaigning before black crowds or being interviewed by black talk show hosts. All things black

miraculously become all things Teresa know and like. Those 15 black women mentioned in the article will hopefully one day come to understand that Teresa Tomlinson was only at the home in the first place to get whatever she could get out of them because of who they are, black women of influence and respect. Nobody ever claimed Teresa would not try talk the wings off a dead fly. She probably told them her tale of Deborah in the Bible. I guess black women in particular are supposed to be hooked by that one coming from a white woman. If it is supposed to trick and trap black people, Teresa will try it at least once. That mesmerizing the sister at Paschal's mentioned comes from how hard Tomlinson has studied and how much she has learned in the way of duping the black community. She throws in with the career black politicians of a particular personality and mindset. She enchants members of the black clergy to get closer to their congregation members. She makes all the required rounds and says just what she knows black people, especially black women, want to hear the way they want to hear it. Teresa will come off in her act in a rather natural and confident way as to bamboozle our beloved sisters, and a lot of intelligent, good a profit.” Are you working late into the night to build your business? What are your desires? What are the desires you have for YOUR life? Have you really thought about it? Do you want a career? Have babies? Take a vacation?

A Vision is a Roadmap to Accomplish Your Goals By Teaching Pastor & CEOL. Renee Richardson, MBA My biblical inspiration is the Proverbs 31 Woman. In Proverbs 31:18 we learn that "she works late into the night to make sure her business earns

My heart’s desire becomes my life’s Big 3 goals. My Big 3 goals are: Word, Women and Wealth. My life centers around these. God revealed my purpose in my prayer closet. It drives the visions for my life.

sisters, strong sisters have fell for it hook, line, and sinker because other smart and successful black woman take pride in vouching for Tomlinson as being a loyal and trustworthy friend of black women. Her actions and decisions as mayor say a whole lot different. There is a Teresa they know and the one they do not know, and they will not permit you to tell them about. Tomlinson is perfectly capable of making the strong weak and the weak even weaker. However, she is only as strong as you are weak. Those that have not been schooled will be fooled. If you are without the knowledge and understanding of who we are as a people and our ongoing freedom, justice, and equality struggle, then she will make a fool out of you. With both eyes open and wide awake you will see for yourselves that Tomlinson has no love for strong, independent-thinking black women who will not back down from her or go along with wrong. Tomlinson must always have her way no matter what. Certainly former staffer Edana Walker is an eye/ear witness. Black women are simply tools and window dressing for Teresa Tomlinson, a means to win a seat in the U.S. Senate. You never heard Stacey Abrams repeatedly dropping Teresa Tomlinson's name, but you definitely heard Tomlinson drop Stacey's name every single chance she Smart and wealthy women have a plan! It is critically important to have written goals, or your life will be guided by someone else’s goals: your job, husband, children, parents, church or anything that pulls on your time. Courier March 12, 2020 got. She wanted and wants black Democrats to identify her as a type of Stacey Abrams. Tomlinson tried to name-drop and piggyback off Stacey Abrams, but sister did not fall for it and begin singing Tomlinson's praises all across Georgia, as Tomlinson no doubt expected and more than a few others might have done. Abrams is no mark. She knows the deal. After meeting Tomlinson Abrams apparently was sharp enough to recognize that Tomlinson was running an old game used by white southern Democrats back in the day to dupe black Democrats, and to understand that some very respected members of the Columbus black community were either wittingly or unwittingly complicit in running the game. Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it. I am sure Abrams knows her history regarding how this women's sisterhood thing has been used before in politics to advance some while leaving others little better off. It has also been used before to pit black women against black men. The system prospers from our ignorance, from our lack of knowledge, and lack of understanding. Wisdom, truth, and knowledge can be found in the black American experience. If you know our history, then it is much easier to understand the things I am calling your attention to in this writing.

M I K E B LO O M B ERG Dear Reader, Thank you for taking the time to learn about The Greenwood Initiative. een As someone who has been very lucky in life, I often say my story would only have be barriers of discrimination, my story likely would have turned out very differently if I had h been Black, and that more Black Americans of my generation would have ended up with far more wealth, had they been white. Building Generational Wealth for Black Families is Critical. That’s why I launched et The Greenwood Initiative in Tulsa last month. I visited the site of the Black Wall Stree Massacre, where a white mob decimated the prosperous community of Greenwood d. It is to the memory of the lost lives and promise of Greenwood that we’ve dedicated d The Greenwood Initiative: a plan to address the systematic bias that has kept Black Americans from building wealth.

THE GREENWOOD PLAN WILL: • Create 1 million new Black homeowners • Double the number of new Black-owned businesses • Invest $70 billion in the country’s 100 most disadvantaged neighborhoods

Fixing the System for Black Families. When I was mayor of New Yo York, I was proud to o ed take on the systematic inequality that held back too many New Yorkers. We increase education funding, built 650 new schools and raised Black graduation rates to record unt of highs. We led an ambitious effort to reduce poverty and managed the largest amou affordable housing in the nation. And as President, I will work even more aggressive ely to combat inequality nationwide.

strategies, including guidance regarding testing and isolation.

Should it become necessary, DPH may recommend appropriate community mitigation measures for affected communities, such as temporary closure of childcare facilities and schools/colleges and universities, school and workplace social distancing measures, and postponement or cancellation of mass gatherings. Additionally, businesses should consider ways to implement strategies to reduce the impact of a potential COVID-19 outbreak on their workforce, including teleworking and cross-training employees on essential job functions. The same measures that are urged to prevent the spread of any respiratory virus are increasingly important for all Georgians: - Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. - Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. - Avoid close contact with people who are sick. - Stay home when you are sick. - Cough or sneeze into your elbow or use a tissue to cover it, then throw the tissue in the trash. - Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. - The best prevention against the flu is vaccination. Flu is still widespread and active in Georgia - it's not too late to get a flu shot. COVID-19 is rapidly evolving and guidance is subject to change. The preparations currently underway in Georgia are based on the best scientific information we have from the CDC. DPH will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation, and work with state partners and health care communities to incorporate the most up to date guidance in our planning and preparation efforts.

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Response in Georgia The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is working closely with the CDC, and state partners to prepare for a potential outbreak of COVID-19 in the U.S., including Georgia.
