We Have Got To Do Better!
The street committee continues to be vexed by some Black business owners. Recently the street committee attempted to patronize a well-known Black owned business. Upon arrival there was a line of potential customers surrounding the door viewing a sign that said: “Gone to church. Will be back at 8:40pm. First of all the street committee knows they have plenty of employees because they have patronized them in the past so there was absolutely no excuse for no one being there. Second why come back at all particularly since they close at 9pm. And you wonder why Black businesses have a bad reputation!!!!!
Are There No Traffic Violators North of Macon Road?
The street committee wonders why you can find Columbus police officers writing tickets on Victory Drive, Buena Vista Road, Farr Road and Forrest Road everyday but rarely do you see the “blue lights” wriring citations on River Road and other areas in North Columbus. The street committee has a question for the Chief of Police, Ricky Boren; Are There No Traffic Violators North of Macon Road?
The Street Committee
quickly went viral on social media. According to the street committee Chester has been offered a job by Google!
What’s Going On With The Phenix City School District? According to the street committee there are some serious allegations of professional misconduct concerning Superintendent Randy Wilkes and some members of the Phenix City School District. The street committee will have more information regarding these concerns in an upcoming issue.
Congratulations Davian Chester
The street committee notes that Google is known for Google Doodles highlighting major current events, when the search giant failed to make one for Juneteenth, Columbus’ own local artist Davian Chester stepped in and sketched an image that

There Ought To Be A Law...Stop Soliciting Me For Money Somebody has to say it so it might as well be me. At the risk of appearing insensitive or unempathetic I am about sick and tired of being unable to ride down the street without some organization or group accosting me at a traffic light begging for money. Yes I said it and I don’t believe I am the only one who shares this sentiment. I’m tired of teenaged boys approaching my car on Macon Road shaking buckets at my window asking for my support. How do I know where the money is going? I’m tired of going to Wal-Mart and having to fight through a bevy of Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and or church organizations asking me to give. Can you at least let me purchase what I came for and catch me on the way out? For the record, when I want some Girl Scout cookies I already have a “connect”, Kayla Green, and she’s not waiting for me at a stoplight.
You can’t walk down the street without being solicited for donations. You can’t go to church, or to a sports event, or through the check out at the grocery store without being asked to give a few extra bucks to some project. No I don’t want to donate my change or give a dollar to needy children because I have my own needy grandchildren to donate to. You can’t even turn on the TV or check your email or your Facebook page without seeing some message about someone needing your help.
If you are upset or disagree with what I’ve said so far, then you are really going to be mad with what I have to say next. If you have to set up a “Go Fund Me “page to bury your loved one then how much did you really love them. There are insurance policies available for less than $20 a month. In most cases that’s a case of beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets. Set your priorities today for unfortunate situations you may find yourself faced with tomorrow. Now I know there will be some Caucasians reading this column and shaking their heads in agreement ecstatic that somebody Black is saying what they are thinking and what they share

on a daily basis with their friends when they get together but dare not say in public. Don’t get it twisted. My complaint is not geared toward a specific race. As a matter of fact the next time I visit Old Chicago Pizza & Taproom on Whittlesey Road I would like to enter the building without it being blocked by 20 Caucasian members of the Harris County cheerleading squad asking me for a donation. I guess you know now that I have no problem telling a cute little 4 year old child “no thank you” just like I would tell a 16 year old “no”. And please don’t get me started about the “homeless” individuals set up at the various bypass exits. Some of these individuals have made a career out of “begging” to the point that I would not be surprised to see a Continuing Education course offered through Columbus State University titled “Begging 101”. I get angry every time I see one on the corner with a sign saying “Help Me I’m Homeless” and they have on a new, clean and pressed matching outfit every day. According to the city attorney solicitation in Muscogee County is legal as long as you don’t impede traffic. However any group or organization of ten or more must have a permit. I think the law should be stricter. I am for an ordinance that requires any organization or individual who wishes to solicit donations from the public to apply for a permit that would have a fee attached to it. The permit would include a picture ID for each participant that must be worn at all times. This would eliminate those individuals whose intentions are less than honorable. Such as the church group that approached my vehicle on the corner of Veterans and Manchester Expressway soliciting donations for “The Church of Divine Economic Opportunity”. Finally with all due respect to my Muslim brothers, and please do not question my consciousness as a Black man, this includes you as well. When I want a “Final Call” I get it from my barber Jerry Atwell. "As-Salaam-Alaikum,"

By Brother Love Special To The Courier
Muscogee County Sheriff Donna Laird Tompkins has requested that Columbus Council in effect "abolish" the Muscogee County Marshal's Office. Don't be just a little suspect, but be very suspect of her request. The roots of what she is up to with this unprecedented request run deep. It all must be put into its proper context for the voters before the 2020 Democratic Primary. Sunlight is the best disinfectant, according to the 44th President of the United States of American, Barack Obama, whom Tompkins is said to not have voted to reelect. You need to open your eyes to the wink-and-nod politics going on right under our noses. Since when does an elected county sheriff, supposedly a Democrat, get involved in abolishing any elected office? That in itself needs to be called out and exposed by the Democrats.
All Democrats are not full-fledged Democrats. Some Democrats are Democrats in name only, especially here in Muscogee County. They will play up to the black community to get elected to office. They then flip on us and we get nothing but ceremony, lip service, and a lot of excuses why they can't do exactly what you know they can do, they just are not going to do it at the request of people in from our community. If it has anything to do with fairness to or the civil rights of ordinary black citizens, they get just as hard-hearted and indifferent as the staunchest conservative Republican. Knockoff Democrats are no friend of the black community. Call it what it is, like it is, because it is. They are false pretenders, and should be treated that way.
Now Donna Tompkins is either indifferent to the fact or ignorant of the fact that the Marshal's Office has actually been voted on by the people going all the way back to the vote on government consolidation itself. She claims to want the council to put the issue in the hands of the people. That is baloney. The issue has been in the hands of the people at the polls, and
COMMENTARY
Democrats in Name Only
the people have spoken. The citizens of Columbus, Georgia like the Marshal's Office, and have made it known. Unfortunately, there are those who personally despise the current marshal so much they have turned their sites on not just crippling but abolishing the office itself, especially since they have been unsuccessful at running their handpicked candidates against him in primaries. The instant idea is to kill the office to kill the legacy of the current office holder.
The assault on the Marshal's Office is not a new thing, it is that same old thing we have seen for a number of years. This is not the first time I have attempted to educate you about this ongoing conspiracy. Abolishing the Marshal's Office, even if Greg Countryman is county sheriff, is a good old boy objective the haters have no plan of abandoning anytime soon. You can always depend on these haters to come up with a bunch of deceitful arguments and malicious attacks against this Marshal's Office, to include the deputies and the marshal himself. When you get right down to it, these detractors for years have publicly tried to make the Marshal's Office out to be the Columbus Colored Police, and they have been in many ways treated like Jim Crow segregation treated black police officers. They do and say whatever they want to persuade the public that the Marshal's Office deputies are inferior and without real law enforcement authority or adequate training. They may seem to just dislike the Marshal's Office on the surface, but they have hatred in their hearts for the elected official leading
the office. He never invites a big public fight, but refuses to lie down or be pushed around by bullies. He stands up for his deputies. He stands up for the citizens. He handles business.
Judging by what we all have witnessed, only police officers and sheriff's deputies lives are supposed to matter. The dedicated men and women putting their lives on the line daily as Marshal's Office deputies are not supposed to matter at all to the taxpaying citizens. They are maliciously attacked as if they are the lowest of the low working in the C o l u m b u s Consolidated Government. The people sending that message and hiding behind their positions of trust are despicable, to say the least. They never say the marshal or the deputies are doing a bad job. They just attack them for doing the job they don't like them doing in the county, namely acting as certified peace officers whenever they observe a crime or traffic violation. They would opt for a spike in crime over an marshal's deputy putting life and limb on the line to protect the citizens of Columbus from serious harm or death. That is how bad this thing is. They don't even attempt to do a good job trying to deny any of this. More than anything else, they just depend on you not believing me. They want you to be afraid to agree with the black guy writing for the black newspaper, a black newspaper which has reported more truth than a whole lot of people in city government wanted you to know. The misrepresentations and vindictiveness done to hurt the Marshal's Office actually serves to place these deputies lives in danger on the very streets they patrol dai-

ly. The pitiful excuses for elected officials in city government which have been involved in this devilish campaign against the Marshal's Office do not really care about the safety of the deputies or the safety of the citizens. You must understand they just want to destroy the Marshal's Office by any means at their disposal. You don't matter, I don't matter, the deputies don't matter. Countryman has elevated an office within the CCG some are very determined to tear down, and to see him go down with it. Donna Tompkins is reaching out, to be sure. She is pulling this stunt to attract and appeal to those who long have worked in concert toward undermining and eventually bringing down the Marshal's Office. I understand council was totally surprised by what Donna Tompkins requested they do regarding the Marshal's Office. They did not see it coming at all. Tompkins was independently sending a direct message that she is a team player who can be depended on to play ball the Good Old Boy way to eliminate the Office of Muscogee County Marshal. With official qualifications and the Democratic Primary next year, Donna Tompkins is desperate for help against the very popular Greg Countryman. She is hanging off the cliff grabbing at twigs hoping that if a certain few councilors will persuade a few others to support placing abolishing the Marshal's Office on the ballot in 2020, then she will be lauded as some kind of big hero and rewarded with droves of Countryman haters turning out to vote for her and for abolishing the Muscogee County Marshal's Office. The usual suspects are down and they are very dirty. They think they are flying high and black people are plain stupid. We should make it our business to see that they crash into a fixed solid object and go down in flames. Don't slack off nor back off. Yesterday is gone. The darkness is over. The sun is finally shinning a little brightly. A new day is here, and here to stay. If you haven't heard and don't know, then you had better ask somebody who does.

The Millenial Microphone
By D.A. McBride Special To The The Courier The Mason Dixon Line of Muscogee County: What is it? Where is it? When and how was it formed? Let’s first get a brief understanding of what exactly the Mason Dixon Line is. The Mason Dixon Line, was surveyed between 1763 and 1767 by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon. It became known informally as the border between the Northern and Southern United States and is still used today, figuratively, as a line that separates the north and south politically and socially. Since that’s clear, how does this “Mason Dixon Line” apply to the Greater Columbus Georgia Area? In an AJC article by Greg Bluestein, there was a
review on how more densely populated a metropolis area, the more Democratic the voters tend to be. The focus of the article was on the political divide in urban areas of our state. The last few election cycles have shown that there are solid Republican enclaves even in the bluest cities. FiveThirtyEight, a website that focuses on opinion poll analysis, politics, economics, and sports blogging, used a formula to determine a ranking of the nation’s most politically segregated cities. Interestingly, four of the top 20 cities in the nation were in Georgia. Augusta, Atlanta and Savannah took the 12, 13 and 14 spots respectively. Of the four Georgia cities on this list however, the Greater Columbus area, Georgia and Alabama, lead the state has number 7 in the nation of politically divided cities. The website used poll analysis from the 2016 election. We’re going to take a look at the Greater Columbus, Georgia Area, coming in at number seven in the NATION; not the state but the nation. The website mentions that it’s not surprising that when they looked at the country’s largest cities, they found a strong correlation between black-white segregation and political segregation. Now that we know what the “Mason Dixon line” is. The question then becomes, where is it? Many people in
the city recognize Macon Rd. as the great dividing line “Mason Dixon Line” between North and South Columbus. With the above statement in mind, it’s not happenstance that a large population of minorities in Columbus, live south of the Macon Road border. Including all of our minority elected city council members. Representatives of District one, three, four and seven all have major part of their constituency that live south of the city “Mason-Dixon line.” How did it come to this? My mother once told me “Son, if you don’t know your history, then you are bound to repeat it.” In light of recent National and State legislation changes it appears that history is beginning to repeat itself. So how did this great divide start? After speaking with a few, and I do emphasize a few, individuals about the city’s history and conducting a few Facebook polls of my own, one word kept popping up, red-lining! For those unfamiliar with red-lining it is the systematic denial of various services to residents of specific, often racially associated, neighborhoods or communities, either directly or through the selective raising of prices. The word systematic meaning there was a system in place or there is a system still in place to segregate not just the people by race, but
Chief Recorder’s Court Judge Recommends New Recorder’s Court Clerk By Wane A. Hailes
The Courier Chief Recorder’s Court Judge Julius Hunter will recommend Ms. Clautretta F. Williams to fill the position of Chief Recorder’s Court Clerk. The preceding Chief Clerk, Donna Willingham, will leave CCG to take a new position in Savannah, GA as Chief Recorder’s Court Clerk after serving Recorder’s Court for the past 1 1⁄2 years. Williams’ career spans more than 20 years working as a public servant where she worked as a Social Service Worker and then Juvenile Probation Officer in Russell County, Alabama. She worked as a House Manager for Weracoba Second Chance Home in Columbus and as a Student Services Coordinator for Virginia College here in Columbus. Since January 2017 Williams served as Chief Deputy Clerk and Assistant Chief Deputy Clerk in the Clerk of Muscogee County Superior Court and she is currently serving as a Deputy Clerk.
“The responsibilities of the Chief Clerk of Recorders Court have grown just within the past two years. Recorder’s Court is handling more cases and more court sessions have been added including payments being taken online. I am delighted to have someone of Ms. Williams’ experience and capability to handle the demands of the day-today operations of Recorder’s Court”, said Chief Judge Hunter.
Williams graduated from Columbus State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice in 1998. She serves as a member of the GA Juvenile Services Association; Administrator for the Radical Generational Teen Ministry for Faith Worship Center International, and served as Project Team Captain for House of Heroes. Williams volunteers her time as a mentor for women recovering from substance abuse and is a motivational speaker for youth. She is a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
Courier Thursday July 4, 2019 also wealth and access to gaining generational wealth.
So why am I, a millennial asking all these questions about our city’s history? Because I grew up on the south side of that Mason Dixon Line just behind Macon Road. At the age of 15, my parents and I moved from the Box Wood community area out to Midland, GA. I didn’t realize it then but looking back at it, it was like a badge of black excellence to leave one side of town for the other. My parents didn’t treat it that way nor did I. My goal or aim is not to open any old scabs, however it’s simply to shine a light on what’s already there by the numbers. Politically we are the 7th most divided city in the nation. Physically there is a boundary line that is universally recognized, but to my limited, knowledge rarely discussed in public. Why am I writing this article? Being a son of the city, I love the growth that I’ve seen in the city though slow it maybe at times. But I don’t like the discarding I see of several communities, south of Macon Rd., that have given this city some of its best business minds, politicians, athletes, entertainers and more.
