Worth Hearing Again

According to the street committee; “A citizenship that does not participate in public policy will be led by evil men.” Our majority Republican state elected officials recently elected to change our voting process. A Canadian company made the new voting machines, but the software for the new voting

machines was purchased from Serbia. Cyber security expert says that you cannot secure computerized machines. They are all subject to hacking. The street committee says; it is obvious we need to be proactive in educating our community on the new process to avoid frustration during the next election.

God’s Gym...Open 24/7, No Membership Required

3

The first of every year many of us make a resolution to start “working out”; get in shape, lose weight and to start eating healthier so we join a local gym. After about two or three months we stop going but the gym keeps taking money out of your checking account each month.

Speaking from personal experience I understand how uncomfortable it can be when you are first starting out. You have good intentions. You purchase new workout clothes, start drinking performance shakes, get up early every morning to be in the gym before you go to work. I’ve been there.

You join an aerobics or maybe a spinning class or perhaps you decide to just run on a treadmill. It’s going just fine until your body starts to hurt in places you didn’t know you had. In actuality the pain is from the muscles you hadn’t used in years. Where you used to go everyday you start to justify why you should skip today and go tomorrow. Soon you are back at the house ordering pizza online. In the same that way fitness training is not comfortable, building our faith is not comfortable, but it is beneficial. The process used to build our faith is very similar to fitness training. The more we exercise and train our bodies, the stronger we become. For a time I worked with a personal trainer. He shared with me, when I would say “I can’t do it”, that I would only achieve my desired results when I pushed outside of my comfort zone, when I pushed past the pain.

Faith is the gift of God. He knows what we can and cannot handle. He recognizes strength and potential in us even when we don’t. He has the ability to see beyond what we see. If you trust God by putting your faith in Him, you will be surprised what you will accomplish. Like exercising, putting your trust in Him is not easy. It may take some time but take it from me, Like Dottie Peoples sings; “He may not come when you want Him, but He’ll be there right on time”. No matter what anyone tells you nothing in life comes easy, especially when it comes to having faith. You have to regularly exercise your spiritual muscles to the point of exertion and fatigue. Only by putting your self completely in God's hands can you find real hope and build your faith. Join God’s Gym today. He’s open 24/7 and there is no membership fee required!

The Musical Magic of Motown To Return for Matinee Show Sunday September 15, 2019 By Wane Hailes The Courier

Due to the overwhelming demand the Musical Magic of Motown will have and encore presentation on Sunday afternoon at 3pm on September 15, 2019 at the G.W. Carver High School Auditorium.

The production, presented by the Cr. M. Delmar Edwards Black History Museum will be a benefit for the Carver High School Marching Tigers who have been invited to participate in the 2020 4th of

July parade in the nations capital.

“Because the school’s principal, Chris Lindsey was so gracious in allowing us to use his school for rehearsal we felt this would be an excellent way to show our appreciation by helping to defray some of the cost associated with the band members travel and lodging, said Jackie Egins, the productions Music Director. “We hope the community comes out in support of good music and of course the worthy cause of helping our youth.”

ON THE TABLE RETURNS...BETSY COVINGTON SHARES WHY WE SHOULD BE AT THE TABLE

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier Since 2017 the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley, Inc. has been one of ten community foundations selected to provide an opportunity for an annual civic engagement initiative. This year the event will take place on October 22, 2019. We recently sat with Betsy Covington, President and CEO of the organization to talk about the upcoming event. The Courier: For three years now the C o m m u n i t y Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley has spearheaded this effort of “On The Table”. For those who may not know, what is “On The Table” about”?

Covington: We know big ideas can spring from small conversations and that people invest in what they help create. On the Table is a one-day opportunity to gather around a table with friends, neighbors, and colleagues and maybe even a few people we are meeting for the first time to talk about the issues, big and small, that impact our quality of life. When we talk about our experiences and listen to others, we connect and learn about what matters to all of us.

Courier: From the conversations over these past years what have been the top five concerns of the residents?

Covington: Last year’s survey (results at OnTheTableChatt.com/surveydata) asked respondents to identify the three most important issues they’d like for the community to address. The top five issues were: • Crime, violence, public safety (54%) • Good jobs, economic development (46% • Poverty, economic security (42%) • Race relations, racism, discrimination (23%) • Housing (affordable, homelessness) (19%)

Courier: What has surprised by most as a result of the discussions?

Covington: I was surprised (and pleased) that 86% of the people who took the survey believe that people like themselves can have a moderate or big impact on improving their community, and 90% are confident that residents can come together to address issues and challenges affecting the community in a positive and helpful way. 91% of the survey participants say they’re likely to take specific actions regarding issues they discussed at a 2018 On the Table conversation. And I love that 78% of the people said they spoke with at least one person that they didn’t already k n o w, a n d 5 0 % exchanged contact information with at least one person they didn’t already know. Finally, from my own experience in these discussions (I went to seven last year – it’s fantastic to go to an assortment!), I’ll say that I’m amazed at how “real” the discussions become very quickly. It’s almost a sacred experience to be trusted with people’s deep feelings about their community and their lives. And I believe that once we know each other as people, we can start to trust how we might work together to build the community we all want. The Courier: When is this year’s event?

Covington: This year the event will be held on October 22, 2019. The residents of Columbus invited to be part of this exciting opportunity to discuss not only what’s great about our community, but also ways to make it even better — more sustainable, just, safe, strong and vibrant.

We'll come together to talk, collaborate, and become more civically involved and committed to our community. The issues we face today don’t often offer quick fixes. On the contrary, progress will only result when residents, organizations, businesses and government work together to make contributions that add up to a greater solution than we can achieve on our own. On the Table is a starting place for meaningful conversation.

What happens next is up to you.

The Courier: How did the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley get involved?

Covington: The Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley, Inc., is one of ten community foundations across the U.S. participating in On the Table, a national initiative funded by Knight Foundation, following a successful pilot in 2017. On the Table replicates an annual civic engagement initiative of the same name developed by The Chicago Community Trust in 2014. Support for On the Table advances Knight Foundation’s work to help cities attract and keep talented people, expand economic opportunity and create a culture of civic engagement. Knight Foundation believes that successful communities are equitable, inclusive and participatory. Additional support for the local project is being provided from the Community Foundation’s Community Endowment Funds. The Courier: You shared earlier that residents are invited to participate. What is the process if one wants to be involved this year? Covington: There are two ways. You can be a participant or you can serve as a Host. As a Host you determine a location for folks to meet on October 22, 2019, for a mealtime conversation to discuss not only what’s great about our community, but also ways to make it even better — more sustainable, just, safe, strong and vibrant. You can have your breakfast, lunch or dinner wherever you want and serve whatever you like – from a catered or home-cooked meal to a picnic, barbecue or soupand-salad meal. The Courier: Who do or can they invite?

Covington: The invite list is up to you. If you’re unsure, start with people you know – friends, family, colleagues and neighbors. You may consider reaching out to a larger community by co-hosting your event with a local church or nonprofit.

Consider asking your guests to bring a friend, or invite people from your network that don’t already know each other. Eight-to-twelve guests per table are ideal. On the Table is about giving everyone a chance to speak and be heard. If you want to host a larger gathering, consider breaking into smaller groups and allowing time for each to discuss and report out to the larger group. The Courier: As the host what will be expected of them during and after the gathering

Covington: We look forward to hearing about the stories and commitments discussed at your gathering. We encourage all participants to share insights, photos and videos on social media throughout the day, using #ChattChat. At the conclusion of the On the Table events we’ll send every participant (hosts and guests) a short e-mail survey to learn more about their experiences and their commitments. You may also be asked to participate in a more in-depth post-event interview, where we hope to dive even deeper into some of the experiences, thoughts and ideas that arose from these conversations. All On the Table participants can optin to receive a copy of an electronic copy of the summary report detailing the impact and outcomes of this initiative. You will also be invited to future civic engagement programs, initiatives and events sponsored by the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley. The Courier: Where can I find more information about “On The Table”?

Covington: New and updated information is posted regularly on the On the Table website. You can also join the Facebook group and follow us on Instagram. Additionally, you can send us an e-mail at OnTheTableChatt@cfcv.com to have one of our team members contact you with more information.

Pam Willis Hovey...TV Host, Author, Photographer

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier

Recently, Pam Willis Hovey took a sabbatical from her highly successful, long-running TV show of 13 years, Unity with Pam, to launch and pursue her love of photography. She loves to capture photographic moments of couples, pets, make up artists, high school seniors, family, work outs, and more. Her work connects individuals with a multi-dimensional perspective of their attributes, e.g., outer/inner beauty, uniqueness, and talents/gifts – "captured thru the eye of the camera in a shot". She is studying under the mentorship of good friend and well-known photographer, Greg Grice. A native of Columbus, GA, she is married to retiree Sgt. Harry R. Hovey and is the proud stepmother of three children. At the age of 18, Pam started a janitorial service which, with her long-time and devoted partner "Red”, continues to grow in the Columbus & surrounding areas.

Along with being a woman-owned entrepreneur, she has authored her first romance novel. As if the prior mentioned isn't ambitious enough, Pam enjoys serving as a member of the Move of God Ministries (MOGM), Church of God in Christ. This important stewardship allows her the opportunity to support her parents, Pastor Will A. Willis, Jr. and Co-Pastor Emma Willis, with many of their church programs including Sunday school to their youth. In this role and in her many other endeavors, she receives support from her older sister, a nephew (both Columbus residents), her husband, and that of her much-loved community.

7th Annual Tri-City Latino Festival to Be Held September 21

By Wane A. Hailes Eco Latino

The creation of the festival all started with a dream. A dream to unite all walks of life for one unique purpose. A phone call from Harold “Lefty” Encarnacion, from Millie’s International Market, had Evelyn “Mimi” Woodson thinking, “What now? What does he want me to do? What’s going on?” Mimi, questions in mind, goes to his store and the first thing she says is, “Okay Lefty. What now…what’s going on?” Lefty says, “I have an idea. Calm down.” Mimi shakes her head and says, “Ok…alright…what?” Smiling, Lefty says, “I want to do a Latin Festival.” Shockingly, Mimi says, “What?” Lefty repeated, “I want to do a Latin Festival.” Mimi begins to laugh. “Why are you laughing at me?” Lefty says. “I’m not laughing at you, I’m laughing with you.” Mimi stated. Confused, Lefty says, “Why?” Looking lefty in the eye, Mimi says jokingly, “Because I’ve wanted to do one. I could never get it right to get it going.” Harmoniously, Mimi and Lefty laughed and gave each other a high-five. “Let’s get it going.” Lefty declared. “You know what Lefty, let’s change the name. Why not call it a Tri-City Latino Festival, instead of a Latin Festival. You know we are

always talking about diversity in our community and our area is known for being a Tri-City community, so why not change the name?” Mimi mentioned. That day the dream was born; two friends that shared the same dream, but didn’t know it. “We want to welcome everyone to our 2019 Tri-City Latino Festival on September 21, 2019 at the Columbus Civic Center in Columbus, Georgia, says Mimi Woodsen, the only city councilor of Hispanic descent. “This is a National Festival, a true celebration of ALL cultures and unity. We want to welcome every one of you and celebrate with our Latin cultures from all around the world.” The Tri-City Latino Festival will have a stage with NON STOPTIL-YOU-DROP acts featuring local and internationally acclaimed performers. There will be a diverse group of DJ’s playing a dynamic range of music throughout the festival grounds while patrons enjoy a variety of arts/crafts, merchandise, and ethnic foods in our International Flee Market & food court. This is a FREE family event, so we will have a dedicated Kids Zone and non-stop cultural entertainment all day long!
