You Better Wake Up And Pay Attention The street committee suggests that we can no longer just “go along to get along”. According to the street committee it is time for the Blacks in our community to finally realize that when it comes to the population in Muscogee County we are the majority demographic. Politically that means; “we control our destiny”. In the upcoming election not only must we make sure we understand the new voting procedure we must pay close attention to the amendments that will appear on

the upcoming ballot like we never have before. How we vote in the next election will have a dramatic effect on the quality of our lives for years to come. From the SPLOST to legalized gambling to who will be our next Sheriff will all be decided next November. Get informed, get involved and as the young people say; “Stay Woke’ The street committee says you can leave it it up to others to make decisions for us, about us, without us if you want to, you’ll wake up to find yourself back on the plantation.

My New Year’s Recipe For Success
Once again I find myself reflecting on my life. Not only do I celebrate Christmas and the anticipation of a new year but also in between both, I look forward to another year on this good earth with a birthday.
This year, as I look back over the past sixty-four years I do so with a focus on the things I’ve done right, my successes, instead of the things I didn’t. When I do that it allows me to realize how much I've done right, the good things I’ve done over the course of my life. Without reflection, I find that it's too easy to forget the positive things we’ve accomplished, and instead focus on our failures. As I look back over the years I realize that much of my success is because I have relied on four (4) bones.
The first is a Wishbone. I remember as a child, this was well before chicken tenders and boneless wings; my siblings would fight over that oddly shaped forked chicken bone that, according to ancient romans was a symbol of luck. When snapped apart evenly by two people while making a wish both would have their wishes come true. Like a child I’ve never stopped believing that my wishes equate to my dreams and aspirations and when combined with strategic goals there is nothing I can’t accomplish.
The second is a Funny Bone. I’ve learned that life is no dress rehearsal you are going to have ups and downs. The key is to not take it personal. When you don’t take yourself so seriously you’ll find that humor offers a new perspective on a situation. Any psychologist will tell you that
3
humor leads to laughter, and laughter is healthy, a natural stress reliever.
Of course I could not have achieved any level of success without a Backbone. Synonymous with fortitude a strong backbone has given me the ability to encounter adversity with courage. It has provided me the fearlessness to speak truth to power. It has held me up in the face of rejection and a host of hardships I have encountered over the years. It has given me strength during times of uncertainty and despair. Finally no success is achievable unless you get up off your Tailbone. When starting my paper fifteen years ago the biggest challenge for me getting started was the uncertainty. Would the community accept another Black newspaper? Will I be able to convince businesses to advertise with me? My greatest fear, however, was that I had absolutely no experience in running a newspaper. I didn’t even know how to get started. Here’s a secret most folks won’t tell you: uncertainty is something you might as well get used to. You will never know with any guarantee how something is going to turn out unless you get up off your tailbone and try and keep trying and then try some more.
So whatever your path as you enter this new year I offer to you my recipe for success: When you “find your passion you will find your paycheck”. Add these four bones and see what the Lord has in store for you. Happy New Year!

34th Unity Awards Breakfast Features Reverend Dr. Otis Moss III, Trinity United Church of Christ Chicago, Illinois By Wane A. Hailes The Courier
On Monday January 20, 2019 the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Delta Iota Lambda Chapter will host the 34th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Award Breakfast presented by the Delta Iota Lambda Education Foundation. The “Unity Award Breakfast” has become a long standing must attend event in Columbus the third Monday of each month.
This years guest speaker is Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, Senior Pastor Trinity United Church of Christ Chicago, Illinois.
With civil rights advocacy in his DNA, Rev. D r. O t i s Moss III built his ministry on commun i t y advancement and social justice activism. As S e n i o r Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Ill., Dr. Moss spent the last two decades practicing and preaching a Black theology that unapologetically calls attention to the problems of mass incarceration, environmental justice and economic inequality.
Dr. Moss is part of a new generation of ministers committed to preaching a prophetic message of love and justice, which he believes are inseparable companions that form the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As part of his community engagement through Trinity United Church of Christ, Dr. Moss led the team that came up with the “My Life Matters” curriculum; which includes the viral video “Get Home Safely: 10 Rules of Survival,” created in the aftermath of Michael Brown’s death at the hands of Ferguson, Mo., police.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Moss is an honors graduate of Morehouse College who earned a Master of Divinity form Yale Divinity School, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Chicago Theological Seminary. He returned to

Yale in 2014 to present the famed Lyman Beecher lectures. The three-day event included an in-depth discourse on the subject of "The Blue Note Gospel: Preaching the Prophetic Blues in a Post Soul World." The lectures, which demonstrated a homiletic blueprint for prophetic preaching in the 21st century, were the foundation of his latest book, Blue Note Preaching in a Post-Soul World: Finding Hope in an Age of Despair, published in 2015. tion.
He is the former pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga., his first pastorate, where the church grew from 125 members to over 2100 disciples during his tenure. Dr. Moss is an ordained minister in the Progressive National Baptist Convention and the United Church of Christ. He is on the board of The Christian Century Magazine, and chaplain of the Children’s Defense Fund’s Samuel DeWitt Proctor Child Advocacy Conference. He is married to his college sweetheart, the former Monica Brown of Orlando, Fla., a Spelman College and Columbia University graduate. They are the proud parents of two creative and humorous children, Elijah Wynton and Makayla Elon.
