Beware of the “Pot-Stirrer”
You might think from the title that I’m about to share cooking tips with you. I’m not. The phrase or expression “pot-stirrer” is defined by one dictionary as “one who causes unrest or dissent”. The Urban Dictionary defines it as one who is a drama queen, gossip queen instigator, nosy, a hater. My mother, however, has an entirely different definition; someone who likes to keep up mess. There are messy people, “potstirrers” all around us. They are co-workers, committee members, friends, even family. They can appear to be helpful, but they really aren’t. You know them as the person that gives you a compliment and then takes it right back. Here’s an example: “I like your shoes, but I wouldn’t have worn them with that dress.” Most “pot-stirrers” have talent but by stirring the pot it draws attention to themselves allowing for self-promotion. They are extremely selfish, only with you as long as there is something in it for them. When the going gets rough they will be the first one to disappear. The “pot-stirrer” tends to do a lot of gossiping and instigating trouble behind the scenes all, of course, out of concern for the organization. These individuals remind me of the song by the O’Jays “Backstabbers”. Pot-stirrers are a dangerous people because they can destroy a business, a committee, a family from the inside out. If, for some reason you have never run across one of these individuals then you might consider that you may be a “pot-stirrer”. When was the last time you gave someone a compliment?

This is Why We Must Vote The Republican Party Has a Strategy to Win in November Sheriff Donna Tompkins Reelection Committee P. O. Box 8215 Columbus, Georgia 31908 February 7, 2020 Friends, Our Sheriff, Donna Tompkins, last week announced her candidacy for reelection as Sheriff. We think it’s important to reelect Sheriff Tompkins and ask for your support as well. Sheriff Tompkins does have opposition on the Democratic Primary ballot. Her announced opponent is Greg Countryman, the current Marshall. Your vote and financial support will make a difference in this election. Sheriff Tompkins must first win the Primary Election to be on the General Election ballot.
By Wane A. Hailes The Courier Some will say it’s racist, others will claim it is illegal. The letter currently being mailed to Republicans in Muscogee County by “Friends of Donna Tompkins is neither. Mailed from Sheriff Donna Tompkins Reelection committees it suggests that “registered Republicans can vote in the Democratic Primary Election but must request a Democratic ballot. Once Sheriff Tompkins wins the Primary, she will be on the General ballot on November 3, 2020 where all voters, Democratic and Republican, can vote for her as well as all other candidates.” Georgia is one of only 24 states that allows for an open primary. This is a that does not require voters to be affiliated with a in order to vote for partisan candidates. The Republican Party has long used the open primary structure as a strategy to manipulate and dilute the voting process. Their strategy, as is the case with the Muscogee County Sheriff’s race is to organize its Republican voters to cross over and vote in the primary as a Democrat and choose the candidate that they most agree with (Tompkins). Then during the General election in November her opponent will be Marki LaJoye.
Early voting begins April 27, 2020 at the Citizens Service Center. Voting for the Primary Election will be May 19, 2020. Sheriff Tompkins will be on the Democratic Ballot. Registered Republicans can vote in the Democratic Primary Election but must request a Democratic ballot. Once Sheriff Tompkins wins the Primary, she will be on the General ballot on November 3, 2020 where all voters, Democratic and Republican, can vote for her as well as all other candidates.
There are 64,203 registered African American and Hispanic voters in Muscogee County as opposed to 52,837 Caucasian voters.
You can trust Tompkins. I guess on May 20, 2020 we will see if the Republican Party’s strategy worked. Again, it is not an illegal. It is, however, a political tactic used when a political Party is concerned about losing. If, after reading the above letter you find yourself engulfed with anger, good, there is an easy solution to overcoming this strategy, For years now I have stated that because we are the majority demographic in Muscogee County, we can elect who we want by voting. The decision of who should represent us as our mayor, judges, city councilors, school board members and Sheriff is entirely up to us. We don’t have to be blamed for playing “The Race Card” if we use our “Voter Registration Card”. Every election cycle there are numer ous conversations in the Bloack and Brown community’s claiming that we need more people in the criminal justice system who look like us.

M I K E B LO O M B ERG Dear Reader, Thank you for taking the time to learn about The Greenwood Initiative. een As someone who has been very lucky in life, I often say my story would only have be barriers of discrimination, my story likely would have turned out very differently if I had h been Black, and that more Black Americans of my generation would have ended up with far more wealth, had they been white. Building Generational Wealth for Black Families is Critical. That’s why I launched et The Greenwood Initiative in Tulsa last month. I visited the site of the Black Wall Stree Massacre, where a white mob decimated the prosperous community of Greenwood d. It is to the memory of the lost lives and promise of Greenwood that we’ve dedicated d The Greenwood Initiative: a plan to address the systematic bias that has kept Black Americans from building wealth.
THE GREENWOOD PLAN WILL: • Create 1 million new Black homeowners • Double the number of new Black-owned businesses • Invest $70 billion in the country’s 100 most disadvantaged neighborhoods
Fixing the System for Black Families. When I was mayor of New Y Yo ork, I was proud to o ed take on the systematic inequality that held back too many New Yorkers. We increase education funding, built 650 new schools and raised Black graduation rates to record unt of highs. We led an ambitious effort to reduce poverty and managed the largest amou affordable housing in the nation. And as President, I will work even more aggressive ely to combat inequality nationwide. I understand that undoing generations of systematic discrimination won’t happen overnight, but we can make progress with a clear vision and a comprehensive plan. I’ve i included l d d a pamphle hlett along l with ith this thi letter l tt that th t lays l outt my plan. l When Wh I’m I’ President P id t, t implementing The G Greenwood Initiative: will be a top priority. Join me in ending th he sys ystemic inequality that has held Black Americans back for too long! Sincerely,

After Years on Life Support, Just Like That They Pulled the Plug on Granddad!! By Wane A. Hailes The Courier Thirty years ago, when I arrived in Columbus as the Director of the A.J. McClung YMCA, my then Administrative Assistant, Ernestine Ramsey, took me to my first Tuskegee Morehouse football Classic, “The Granddaddy of Them All”. Much of the excitement surrounding the event was because the former YMCA Director and Mayor Pro Tem A.J. McClung, a graduate of Tuskegee along with (Ret.) Col. Jim Jackson a Tuskegee alumni and Henry Shavers a Morehouse graduate made up the Tuskegee Morehouse committee. It didn’t hurt that the program booklet was an annual fundraiser for the YMCA. The event, at that time was held at night and was as much a fashion show as it was a great football game. Hair weave wasn’t the norm at that time so instead of naked horses there were a lot of scared rabbits and foxes running around. With the men
dressed in their Eddie Murphy leather outfits and women dressed to impress adorned in their best fur shawls or full-length fur coats you couldn’t tell my people they weren’t fine. Both stands were packed to capacity with attendees rushing to the con-
cession stands beginning early in the 2nd quarter so they could be back in their seats by halftime for the “Battle of the Bands.” That was then. Years since they changed oldest and longest running HBCU Classic in the nation from a night game to one played on a Saturday afternoon.
You would think, along with the change of game time, the introduction of tailgating and the inclusion of food and merchandise vendors the “Classic” would be larger than ever by now. Instead, however, not since Oscar winner Denzel Washington would attend to watch his son play for Morehouse,
the opposite has been true. The attendance at the game has dwindled over the years so much so that Granddaddy has lingered on life support for at least the last 8 years. Recently, to the surprise of everyone they pulled the plug on Granddad. That’s right, Granddad has left the building. There will be no more parades down Broadway, No more Crimson
Piperettes, Mahogany-N-Motion or Battle of the Bands at halftime. It appears Birmingham, Alabama has “The Right Stuff” to bring Granddaddy back to life. We will see! Sadly, we understand that the local Tuskegee Morehouse committee was not even given an opportunity to offer a counter proposal. For the most part they learned about the move just like the rest of us. The Tuskegee Morehouse Classic was one of those events that brought this community together. The first game was played here in 1936. Losing the “Classic” a serious economic loss for the city. I can only imagine how disappointed the late A.J. McClung and Gorden Kitchens along with Col ret. Jim Jackson along with Henry Shavers who, for years were the stalwarts of the game are feeling right now.
