A VIEW FROM A PEW

I Listened, I Read, I Watched…My Observation unsure vote was Bruce Huff. If Bruce voted for it then more than likely John House and Walker Garrett would also. When they realized the minority counselors were not on one accord those councilors, who may have been on the fence took advantage of the opening to express their concerns about committing to the acquisition amid uncertain economic times. After about an hour-long discussion, the city manager delayed the vote until further notice. My Observation It is interesting what you can discern when you take the time to listen to what people say, read what people think and watch what people do.

Like most of you I heard the rumors, I read the negative comments and accusations on Facebook as well as the letter from the Liberty Theatre staff that’s circulating in the Black community. I also watched the city council meeting and then I did my own research. I’m talking about the controversy surrounding the historical Liberty Theater Cultural Center. In the grand scheme of things, given the pandemic crisis we are currently going through, I can understand if this story is not on your radar. But it should be. Allow me to bring you up to speed. I Heard During the March council meeting, city councilors were prepared to vote to purchase and revitalize the historical venue when councilor Bruce Huff asked for a delay. Huff requested the delay, stating that he had received calls from “new

players” who were interested in obtaining, revitalizing and running the Liberty. Prior to moving forward, he asked that the group have an opportunity to put a plan together and present it to the mayor and city manager prior to the next council meeting. City manager Isaiah Hugley said he would “gladly yield” to the group, noting; “If there is a group who has what it takes to save it, the city needs to back away because we’re not looking for another facility.” I Read Prior to the April council meeting a “To Whom It May Concern” letter was circulated to area media outlets. Sent by Dr. Shae Anderson, the current director of the Liberty Theatre, the letter offered a detailed account of how she believed she had not been “kept in the loop” regarding plans concerning the Liberty Theatre. Anderson also took

to Facebook with her concerns and allegations. I Watched During the April city council meeting, again the councilors were asked to vote for the city to take ownership of the Liberty Theatre. Doing so would allow the city to pay a projected $3 million to repair and revitalize the nearly century-old theater. However, when Councilor Bruce Huff spoke, he said he still had investors interested in the property but had not been able to get into the building for a walk through. As the result he couldn’t vote in favor of the acquisition until that opportunity had been met. According to my sources, going into the meeting, there were enough votes to approve the move for the city to assume ownership. Those votes included, “Pops” Barnes, Valerie Thompson, “Mimi” Woodson and Gary Allen. The

Here is my observation regarding this situation. 1. Although I believe they sincerely realize and respect the historical significance and the benefit of the Liberty Theatre as a tourist attraction, the city really doesn’t want to take on the responsibility if they don’t have to. 2. It would be great if the Liberty Theatre could be revitalized and repaired by a group of Black investors. Although anything is possible I just don’t see it. It is hard for me to see anyone investing $3 million in a project where there is no return on their investment. 3. It is clear that although the Liberty Board Chairman, State Representative Calvin Smyre wields a considerable amount of influence, contrary to the information received from Anderson, the decision to approach the city was a board decision not an individual one. Having worked for a non-prof-

it organization it is not uncommon for a board to make decisions in the best interest of an organization without including the leadership. 4. You may not want to be the one to air “dirty laundry” on social media unless you are sure yours is clean. When councilor Huff commented that he had tried for an entire month to reach someone at the Liberty Theatre to schedule the walk through the inability to do so falls on the director and staff of the Liberty, not the City Manager, not the chairman of the board. They don’t have keys to the building. 5. When it was revealed that the current executive director was offered $50,000 a year to stay on as Director if the city took control of the facility but turned it down because it wasn’t enough money, it was interesting to note that all of her posts regarding the Liberty theatre were deleted that evening. 6. A lot of people turned to Facebook to express their anger that the board would seek to be, as some said; “bailed out” by the city. But I wonder how many of them have stroked a check, paypaled, cash apped or venmoed money to the historical Liberty Theatre? If you want to impress me, a sizeable cash donation beats conversation any day, all day. I’ve always believed that a drowning man doesn’t care who throws him a lifeline. The Liberty Theatre is going under for the third time. I don’t know about you, but a $3 million lifeline looks pretty good to me.
