THURSDAY June 20, 2019
District Attorney Julia Slater Lies Again Either Julia is straight doltish or she considers all Black folks as “Boo Boo the Fool”. According to the street committee, at a recent Town Hall meeting hosted by the NAACP, our District Attorney claimed she couldn’t speak about the Johnny Lee Gates Case. Her reason “I am following the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct for attorneys”. However, there is no ethical reason why she couldn’t speak regarding the Gates case. She has filed her brief and it is public information. The District Attorney is elected by and represents the community therefore she answers to the community. There is no such ethical rule that precludes her from talking to us about the case. Throughout the meeting Slater continued to skirt the issue even to refusing to address hypothetical situations. When reminded by the President of the NAACP that she said she would reconsider her decision to appeal her decision the District Attorney denied that she told her that. This is a blatant lie and she was called out on it. When asked if she had the power to rescind her decision she attempted to deflect the question finally stating that she does not have the power. This, once again, is a prevarication. As the chief prosecuting attorney the District Attorney does have the power to rescind her decision. One of the most troubling revelations is that despite the irrefutable evidence of racial discrimination and new DNA evidence exonerating Mr. Gates, D.A. Slater did not include that information in her brief that she submitted appealing Superior Court Judge John D. Allen’s decision requesting a new trial for Johnny Lee Gates. Her failure and refusal to communicate her reasons effectively in front of the local NAACP, the premiere civil rights organization in the country, suggests that this can no longer be just an NAACP spearheaded issue. It is time for the NAACP to enlist the assistance of the IMA (Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance), Black Elected officials and concerned grassroots organizations and individuals. We must come together as one with the sole purpose of obtaining justice for Johnny Lee Gates. Before there
The Street Committee
is another meeting with this District Attorney there must be a meeting with the aforementioned organizations to put in place a strategy to moving forward, up to and including replacing Julia Slater. If this does not occur within the next few days, not weeks, not months, then we need to stop fooling ourselves and Johnny Lee Gates that the Black citizens of Columbus, Georgia are sincere about making a change in Muscogee County. All it takes is a couple of phone calls to rally the troops. They are ready willing and waiting by the phone. In all fairness, the street committee must acknowledge that a former African American employee of the Slater administration reached out to them taking issue with the portrayal of D.A. Slater. The employee says we have her all wrong, that she does not see color, just right and wrong. “Admittedly, said the individual, she does have a problem communicating her views but as a whole she is a good person.” The street committee doesn’t buy it and has its own take on the DA. The street committee believes she is getting her marching orders from the White male power structure in the city. To let Johnny Lee Gates go free will open up a “Pandora’s Box” which could potentially bring the local justice system to its knees. But let’s say she does have a communication problem, then the street committee faults every Black person working in her administration, especially her Chief Assistant District Attorney Alonza Whitaker, who she spoke so highly of at the town hall meeting. The street committee faults them for not effectively sharing with her the concerns of the Black community surrounding this case. It’s not enough to just be Black in these positions but to be a voice with and for the people when you are in these positions. With that said, to our local NAACP, the next move is yours...MAKE THE CALLS! Kudos Attorney Teddy Reese The street committee wants to congratulate Griffin & Griffin Towing for receiving the City towing contract. They would also like to extend kudos to Attorney Reese’s for his exceptional representation of his clients The street committee also sends kudos to the tow truck owners that came for-
ward to assist Griffin & Griffin move the city vehicles from Columbus Towing & Recovery. Proof that we can come together to help each other. What they gave them 7 hours to do they were able to accomplish in 3 hours.
Ft. Benning Estates MHP According to the street committee Ft. Benning Estates continues to charge former residents even though the mobile park has been condemned by the city since December 4, 2018. More to come.

Something To Think About
Every now and then I run across something that, like Arsenio Hall used to say, makes me go, Hmmmm? I hope these words do the same for you. • "Don't let your worries get the best of you. Remember, Moses started out as a basket case" • Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited - until you try to sit in their pews. • Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisors
• A lot of church members who are singing "Standing on the Promises" are just sitting on the premises. • We were called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges • Be ye fishers of men. You catch them - He'll clean them. • Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous. • Don't put a question mark where God put a period. • Don't wait for 6 strong men to take you to church. • Forbidden fruits create many jams.
• It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one. • The good Lord didn't create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes and sand gnats come close • When you get to your wit's end, you'll find God lives there. • People are funny; they want the front of the bus, the middle of the road, and the back of the church. • Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever. • Quit griping about your church; if it was perfect, you couldn't belong.
• God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called. • God grades on the cross, not the curve • God loves everyone, but probably prefers "fruits of the spirit" over "religious nuts!" • God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage. • He who angers you, controls you! • If God is your Copilot - swap seats! • Prayer: Don't give God instructions -- just report for duty!
• If the church wants a better preacher, it only needs to pray for the one it has.
• The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power behind us.
• God Himself does not propose to judge a man until he is dead. So why should you?
• The Will of God will never take you to where the Grace of God will not protect you.
• Some minds are like concrete, thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.
• We don't change the message, the message changes us.
• Peace starts with a smile. • I don't know why some people change churches; what difference does it make which one you stay home from?
• You can tell how big a person is by what it takes to ........ discourage him. • The best mathematical equation I have ever seen: 1 cross + 3 nails = 4 given.

By Staff The Courier Four years ago our community lost a good friend and the Hispanic community lost its most sincere advocate. Harold “Lefty” Encarnacion left an indelible mark on this community as well as the Courier Eco Latino newspaper. As the result of his service, we elected to present an annual award in his memory. For more than 20 years, Lefty and his wife served the tri-city
area as the owner of Millie's International Market. The business was not only a staple in the Latino community for the cultural items it sold, but also for the opportunities and jobs it provided. Lefty had an unparalleled passion to unite the Latino community, working alongside city councilor Mimi Woodson. Woodson says Lefty's legacy will live on through the Tri-City Latino Festival. After struggling with heart and liver issues for several months,
Lefty passed away in October of 2015. Lefty was a great friend to this community and to me, said publisher Wane A. Hailes. I promised myself that the Courier Eco Latino newspaper would do everything in our power to keep his legacy and memory alive. Our annual award given in his name recognizes an individual or organization that exemplifies his spirit and love for his culture and community.
