THE CORONAVIRUS COMMUNITY NEWS UPDATES Kemp Orders Shelter-In-Place, Closes Schools for Remainder of Academic Year place order Thursday that would start on Friday and continue until April 13. Kemp said he would also be signing an order closing Georgia kindergarten and public schools for the rest of the academic year.

On Wednesday Governor Brian Kemp said that he would sign a shelter-in-

The new orders comes after the Georgia Department of Health confirmed more than 4,600 cases of coronavirus in the state. Health officials report 139 p e o p l e have died and over 950 are hospitalized due to the the virus. Citing research by the The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, the governor said that the state's hospitals would be at capacity on April 23 if the same amount of social distancing was currently enforced. "Now is the crunch time for us to lessen the peak, to make the bullseye smaller so we don't overrun our health care system," Kemp said, saying that the next three weeks are critical for Georgia. Under the new power of the order, Kemp said he will be enforcing the new shelter-in-place restrictions using law enforcement. Speaking to the press, he admitted that he had concerns with issuing the

order, but "at this point I think it is the right thing to do" after he learned that people who are asymptomatic with the disease could still spread the virus throughout the community. Know how the COVID-19 outbreak is impacting Georgia "We felt the time was now to take some more aggressive measures," the G e o r g i a Department of Public Health's D r . Kathleen To o m e y said . Since the outbreak started, Kemp has previously closed schools, banned gatherings of 10 or more people, shut down bars and nightclubs and ordered people in fragile health to stay home. But he resisted calls for a statewide order for all Georgians to shelter at home, saying those decisions are best left to local governments. The result has been a patchwork of ordinances that can vary widely even between neighboring communities. Testing for COVID-19 has been limited in Georgia, with results often taking longer than a week. That’s hindered the ability of state health officials to know how widespread infections truly are.

A VIEW FROM A PEW

The Hospital Window

Recently I ran across this story and felt it might it inspire someone.

mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.

Days, weeks passed.

One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.. Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene. One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band — he could see it in his

and

months

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed. It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, “Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.” Epilogue: There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can’t buy. “Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present .”

A 3-Part Thought-Provoking Opinion By Brother Love...Part 1

By Brother Love Special to the Courier SHERIFF DONNA L. TOMPKINS, MAYOR B.H. "SKIP" HENDERSON, columbus council, and columbus/muscogee county state delegation abolish an elected office and eliminates a city-wide elected seat, disregards an established precedent of voting, overturns the will of 62% of muscogee county voters, prevents black democratics from officially qualifying as candidates, robs every qualified voter of the right and opportunity to vote and decide the future of the taxpayer-funded county marshal's office

It is difficult to connect all the dots on this one, brothers and sisters. They have really made it easy for all of you this time. Some people obviously think Black people in Columbus are dumb and growing dumber by the minute. On the contrary, there are black people in this city smart enough to understand Black public officials in government should be tireless warriors in promoting, protecting, and preserving the right to vote of every qualified citizen. Consequently, there are a few more Black people than usual paying a little closer attention as to how all this devilment surrounding abolishing the Marshal's Office came about, and to how once again this involves some very respected Black people holding positions of trust. After reading this 3-part installment of this column and connecting all the dots, I am sure there will be greater community concern and greater outrage in the Black community. Notably, Black voters in Muscogee County Georgia have voted in greater numbers than any other demographic since 2009. That fact alone explains why the blatant robbery of the people's the right to vote and decide was crucial to abolishing the Muscogee County Marshal's Office. You know that this was yet another example of the

dirty politics and trickery which always shows up whenever Marshal Greg Countryman and the Muscogee County Marshal's Office are the topic of discussion in our local government. There is no denying there is well over a decade long bias against the Marshal's Office in the Columbus Consolidated Government. What you should also understand is that the move to "abolish" the Marshal's Office and to eliminate the elected position of Marshal was also about antipathy, power, and control. Now sunlight is most definitely the best disinfectant, so let's just tell the truth and expose the lies, manipulators, and deceivers. Sheriff Donna To m p k i n s , M a y o r B . H . " S k i p " Henderson, and certain members of Columbus Council, were out to politically damage Marshal Greg Countryman by every means and instrument available to them. Abolishing the Marshal's Office was a means to a desired end they hope to realize when the last vote is counted in the May 19th Democratic Primary. City Manager Isaiah Hugley as a city employee was a ready available instrument or tool at the mayor's disposal to help accomplish the mission. The Columbus/Muscogee County state delegation was another available means. Through the city manager's Representative Calvin Symre (D) and Representative Carolyn Hugley (D) were also available for the Mayor Henderson to use against Greg Countryman. The two state representatives could be counted on by the mayor to turn a deaf ear to Elder Edward O. DuBose, NAACP National Board member and a Past-President of the Georgia State Conference of the NAACP, pleading the case for the people to decide the future of the Muscogee County Marshal's Office at the polls, since there was a well-established precedent of voting on the issue that should be observed and respected by the state delegation even if the mayor and council neglected to do so. Turning of the deaf ear is exactly what happen when Edward Dubose thoroughly explained that the recorded will of the people was being overturned by mayor and council, that the issue was always decided by vote, and that this was in effect voter suppression. Elder Dubose will bear witness to the fact that not even voter suppression

stirred any concern in either of the Black state representatives. That is beyond frightening.

aboveboard and straightforward to black people when they were anything but straightforward.

Elected officials consciously ignoring that well-established precedent of voting cries out against everyone involved in abolishing the Marshal's Office. It points to ulterior motives. It exposes the full extent of deceitfulness used to accomplish the foul mission. It makes clear all the scheming and all the collaboration it took, not to mention how low these people had to sink, to get the job done. Every specious argument, every lie they could come up with was used by these public officials to rob the people of the right and opportunity to vote and decide the future of the County Marshal's Office.

Knowing that the city manager held ill-feelings for his Omega Psi Phi fraternity brother Greg Countryman, using the first Black city manager to go after the man who when elected will make history as the first Black Sheriff of Muscogee County in 193 years was a perfect opportunity Mayor Henderson was not about to pass up on. Having the blessings and full support of mayor and council, the overzealous attitude and aggressive approach of the city manager clearly demonstrated to them that he was more than happy to get the assignment to help Tompkins and hurt Countryman all at the same time. He had full rein to do and say whatever he pleased.

Question: Why would abolishing the Marshal's Office be so important to all these officials that they would stoop so low as to compromise their trustworthiness in the eyes of the people? Answer: They did not care. To this day they are simply not worried about the citizens holding them publicly accountable for anything they do. They have no fear that the people will decide to vote them out of office when to opportunity arises. They do not even fear they will ever have a credible threat from an opponent. And they are sticking it in our faces and ramming it down our throats. They are daring us to hold them accountable or vote them out of office. Sheriff Donna Tompkins sought a hostile takeover of the Marshal's office as a swipe at Marshal Greg Countryman and to help herself get reelected. Mayor Henderson set his face to deliver the Marshal's Office and the 2020 Democratic Primary victory to her using Columbus City Manager Isaiah Hugley as political hit man. Those of us who understand the local politics and are possessed of our right minds know full well that Mayor Henderson would use the black city manager as the hit man, especially the black city manager who does not hide the fact that he has no love for Greg Countryman. Using the city manager as political hit man would make things look more

Of course, concerned citizens are supposed to be too dumb and too lazy to notice any of those things, let alone connect any of them together. Furthermore, we are supposed to be to afraid to say or do anything about. As previously expressed, they have no fear there will ever be a significant number of the people united and organized enough to be of much concern to them in their currently held positions. However, I predict that in the not too distant future Millennials in the black community will rise up to help change all of that. Mayor Henderson has in effect admitted he did not want the people to have the vote and that he wanted state legislation rushed through before the candidates could officially qualify to run for county marshal. All three of the candidates in question were black and were Democrats. What does that tell you. The fix was in from the start. Never forget, for the plan to be successful the people had to be raped and robbed of the right and the opportunity to vote again on the issue. Brothers and sisters, at this point it is only logical to conclude that is was never going to be any decision coming out of the Columbus/Muscogee County state delegation other than one that would be in some way helpful toward Sheriff Donna L. Tompkins being reelected. The game was rigged, which See Love Page 10

PAGE 10

Courier April 2, 2020 Love From Page 9

is why mayor and council were so adamant that the issue be presented to the Columbus/Muscogee County state delegation without any mention or support for a ballot issue they voters could decide for themselves. The final outcome was always a foregone conclusion in their minds. It was all sown up. This is not my imagination or your imaginations running wild. It is all meant to be in our faces. They are all drunk with power and have no fear of consequences. The Hugleys have no like, love, or respect for Greg Countryman and were going to stand together on shutting down the Marshal's office, which is evident from the "Donna Tompkins For Sheriff" campaign signs in front of the home and the business. It is a free country, and their aversion for Countryman and the planted Tompkins campaign signs are no big secrets in the black community. They were put for the black community to see that they were fully supporting Donna Tompkins. Why else? They did not put those signs in the back yard. It was a message, and a message it was in more ways than one. The motives are about power, influence and even control in the black community, not about unity or pride or advancing the black community. We can no longer afford to be happy about being lied to, or living a lie

pretending things are not going on that are specifically designed to hold us back and keep us down. We must stop lying to ourselves and pretending the people deeply involved in such efforts are not involved at all. Sixty-two percent (62%) of voters in Muscogee County had previously voted against abolishing the Marshal's Office, so the Hugleys right along with all the rest were going to say do everything in their power to deny the voters another opportunity to vote and decide anything at all about the Marshal's Office. Note: About this time you have recognized the fact that the roles black people played and the way they played those roles was just as critical to the overall success of the plot as was the voter suppression. Voter suppression and Black participation were the key ingredients. The unanimous council vote to abolish the Marshal's Office that our state elected officials are so quick to point out was probably an unexpected plus, but stealing our opportunity to vote on the Marshal's Office was a must from the very start. It was the backbone and foundation of the whole undertaking, which you as citizens, taxpayers, and registered voters need to understand and never forget, especially when these officials come up for reelection. The power we have over each of them is the power of the vote.

ENFERMEDAD
