from the editor

First and foremost, I would like to congratulate America on the huge gains last year in the movement toward full equality! I look forward to seeing these life-changing events in future history books. Another major event of last year that will share printed space in the history of 2012, was the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, which was also life changing for so many Americans. We are so pleased that this issue brings you travel highlights from the state of New Jersey, which suffered millions of dollars in damages to many coastal locations, including the infamous Jersey shore. Instead of a typical editor’s letter, which entices readers to flip through the pages of this latest issue, I have dedicated this short and sweet introduction to offering you information on how to donate and continue the rebuilding efforts in New Jersey. New Jersey and residents have already cleaned up and reconstructed much of its tourist areas and they happily welcome visitors, however, the state still has a long way to go in their efforts to rebuild, so donations remain necessary. See below for a list of donation centers. As always, thanks for reading and we look forward to connecting with you in our next released issue, which features travel highlights in the state of Virginia.

LGBT in

America y e s r e J ew by Edward Truth

N

History has proven that progress is rarely welcomed unanimously. So it is with LGBT life in America. Compelling and controversial, the civil rights saga spans geography and generations, binding each new chapter to the last, embracing diversity, building from blueprints yet undrawn.

As one of the thirteen colonies to secede from Britain during the American Revolution, New Jersey started as a leader, and recently The Garden State stepped up as a voice against prejudice and mediocrity in American politics. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the state became a symbol of bipartisanship when Governor Chris Christie (R) schooled House Republicans on the importance of giving aid to disaster victims, regardless of state-party affiliation. When it comes to protecting the disenfranchised against an indifferent system, Christie hasn't always done the right thing. But equality advocates can find some solace in progress, as the state now contends with threats that really do matter—like community-crushing natural disasters—instead of focusing on what a great deal of Americans now consider their right: marriage.

8

New Jersey doesn't allow same-sex couples to marry, but instead offers the civil union as a type of recognition for families who might be better served by marriage. As a growing number of states have recognized, civil unions fail because they invite discrimination and create more harm outside the state by offering a separate and unequal status to taxpaying residents looking to start families. Since 2007, the state has recognized same-sex marriages from other states or foreign countries as civil unions, and in 2010 the state Senate rejected attempts to legalize marriage for same-sex couples—the fight is currently being waged in the trial courts. But the pressing issue of marriage equality will soon be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court, who announced in December it would hear the California Prop 8 case, potentially changing the face of equality in America by affecting an integral and growing segment of the population, just as Lawrence v. Texas (2003) and Loving v. Virginia (1967) did before.

www.connextionsmagazine.com

Important Dates in New Jersey LGBT History 1967 New York and New Jersey decide that state liquor commissions can no longer forbid bars from serving gay men and lesbians. 1988 The Episcopal Diocese of Newark, NJ became the first church in the country to support ministers and congregations who condoned and blessed relationships between gay and lesbian couples. 1991 New Jersey's Law Against Discrimination is amended to include "affectional or sexual orientation” (see also 2006).

New Jersey's queer revolution is said to have started at The Den, a Somerset bar that began as a haven for the avant-garde in New Brunswick in 1944. Later in 1961, the venue became a symbol for gay liberation in the state when the Alcoholic Beverage Commission (ABC) revoked the bar's license, citing "foul, filthy, indecent or obscene language or conduct" and "lewd or immoral activity" as its justification. In the case of The Den (then known as "Manny's Den") prosecutors used several rules from the State Commissioner's regulations concerning alcohol after Prohibition to forbid "the congregation of apparent homosexuals" (source: outhistory.org, outinjersey.net). It wasn't until 1967—the same year as the Loving decision and two years before Stonewall—that the state Supreme Court would reverse the discriminatory decision. In the LGBT civil liberties column, New Jersey respects its workers and opens up adoption, regardless of orientation. To most of us this makes perfect sense. What's difficult to understand is that so many of those same LGBT workers and would-be parents are not yet respected enough to partake in the benefits of marriage. Currently nine states and the District of Columbia have the freedom to marry for same-sex couples (source: freedomtomarry.org), so it's tough to imagine a state with so much progress failing in the category of family creation and security. But what is also hard to believe is that any future marriage equality victory achieved in the state will have come, in part, because of the Church.

1997 The New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services policy of denying consent to joint adoption by unmarried couples is changed, indirectly granting adoption rights to same-sex couples. 2006 New Jersey Supreme Court unanimously rules in favor of marriage equality. The decision whether to rewrite marriage law or write civil union law is left to the legislature, which leads to civil unions. New Jersey’s Law Against Discrimination is amended to include “gender identity and expression.” 2010 Governor Chris Christie vetoes a same-sex marriage bill previously passed by the state Assembly.

In 1987, an Episcopal Bishop by the name of John Shelby Spong sought to recognize and bless "non marital relationships, including those between homosexuals," but was met with resistance from 22 fellow New Jersey Episcopalians who filed ecclesiastical (religious or spiritual-related) charges against him. With the charges later dismissed, Bishop Spong argued that the Church's treatment of homosexuals was immoral. Shortly after, the Church reassessed its view of homosexuality, and in 1988 the policy to bless same-sex couples was approved, proving that allies sometimes come from the unlikeliest of places (source: outhistory.org). Fifteen years later, the state has yet to grant same-sex couples the freedom to marry. New Jersey's first openly gay legislator, Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D), has introduced a bill that would put the issue before voters—a controversial measure the Governor said he would support when he shot down marriage equality in 2012. Now, with the first female Democratic Governor in the state now up for election, let’s see if New Jersey is poised to lead once again. photo: Atlantic City’s newest Casino Resort, Revel

The Empire of Boardwalk This is the stuff movies are made of – or rather TV shows! During the prohibition era in the US, Atlantic City offered some rather controversial forms of entertainment, unlike other resorts, including: back-room gambling, rum running, and speakeasies. In 1930, Atlantic City played host to a conference for the leaders of organized crime in the United States. It is considered by many crime historians to be the earliest organized crime summit held in the US. It has been written that the conference played a major role in the future direction of the criminal underworld. The Atlantic City Conference was said to be hosted by John Torrio, Charlie “Lucky” Luciano, Frank Costello and Meyer Lansky. The host of the conference was Atlantic City and South Jersey crime Boss, Enoch “Nucky” Johnson, who provided the hotel accommodations, along with food and entertainment, all while making a guarantee of no police interference. For a true taste of the past, delve into the colorful history of AC by visiting the cities many historic landmarks. One such landmark worth noting is a turn-of-the-century building on St. James Place, now called The Irish Pub, which was once known as The Elwood Hotel, a local speakeasy. The history of the Irish Pub dates back to the 19th century, and rumor has it that it has been identified with the game of Monopoly and the red hotels used in the game are based on the architecture of the Irish Pub. The rich history of Atlantic City is brought to center stage in the Emmy Award-winning HBO series, “Boardwalk Empire,” inspired by the non-fiction book of the same name by Nelson Johnson.

GAY-FRIENDLY From Broadway shows to Diva Bingo, the nightlife and entertainment catering to the LGBT community in Atlantic City is most certainly welcoming. Conveniently located to major metropolitan cities, AC is only 60 miles from Philadelphia, 125 miles from New York, and 175 miles from Washington, DC. The New Jersey Civil Union law went into effect in 2007, so if a beach ceremony is on your bucket list, here are a couple resources that may be useful for planning your special day: www.atlanticcitynj.com/visitors/thingstodo/attractions/gayfriendly www.engaygedweddings.com/new-jersey-gay-wedding

OUT in AC has attracted media attention worldwide, and the website features dining, nightlife, shopping, events, commitment ceremony information, and package discounts for gay patrons. http://www.caesars.com/getoutinac/ The Greater Atlantic City GLBT Alliance and the Schultz-Hill Foundation present the Miss’d America Pageant, in association with Caesars Entertainment. The Historic Boardwalk

Golf & Gamble

Originally built in 1870 and the first in American history, an 8’ wide wooden foot-walk was constructed for one purpose – to keep the sand out of the hotel lobbies and train cars. In 1889, a devastating hurricane hit the island and with most of the city under 6’ of water, the boardwalk was destroyed.

In March 2009, Atlantic City was ranked among the "Top 10 Golf Cities in America" by ForbesTraveler.com. As the slogan goes -‘there are more ways to play!’ With 19 top rated golf courses, over 150 restaurants, world class casino resorts and 24/7 entertainment, AC shall be considered the architect of adult playgrounds.

Today, the approximately 6 mile long, 60’ wide boardwalk, is planked in a herringbone pattern on top of a concrete and steel substructure, with steel railings along one side to keep walkers, bikers, and rolling wicker chair riders from falling to the beach below.

Book yourself tee time at the prestigious Atlantic City Country Club, which carries the distinction as “The Birthplace of the Birdie,” or check out the benefits of The Links at Brigantine with a comfortable year-round climate; a renovated clubhouse providing mouth-watering cuisine and a full-service bar; along with the ProLink GPS system offering pinpoint yardages.

Night lights: With all of the casinos lit up at night along the boardwalk, taking an evening stroll proves to be a favorite memory for many.

The unique atmosphere of the AC playground includes breathtaking views of the bay, towering pines, succulent sands, and miles of vineyards.

Resilience: With only minimal damage, the oceanfront boardwalk survived the “Hurricane Sandy” devastation of 2012, much unlike “The Great Atlantic Hurricane” of 1944, where the boardwalk and the famous ocean piers suffered significant damage.

For packages, group rates and golf destination information in Atlantic City, visit www.playacgolf.com

Gaming What makes the experience of gaming in Atlantic City so much different than other world-renowned casinos found in such places as Las Vegas and Connecticut? First and foremost, a favorite attraction for tourists is the beach, and the many beach front hotel rooms located on ‘casino row.’ Another highlight of getting your game on in AC, would be the infamous boardwalk, which allows guests to scamper from casino to casino, by way of fresh ocean air. Neither of which are attainable at Casino’s NOT located on oceanfront property.

World-class spas Pamper yourself with over 15 therapeutic spas throughout the Atlantic City area. Luxurious and exquisite body treatments, invigorating massages, aromatherapy, and body wraps, along with relaxing jacuzzi’s, saunas & whirlpools can be reserved at some of the finest resorts. If you are in need of physical refreshment and mental rejuvenation, try the world-class Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa; learn about the healing properties of salt and the sea at The Chelsea Sea Spa; or try “Social Spa-ing” in a most tranquil environment, using Signature Roman Rituals for a unique experience at Ceasar’s Qua Bath & Spa. Escape, indulge and regain your inner peace.

AC boasts a modest 12 casinos, each offering a unique theme and flair. The newest gaming resort, Revel, opened in 2012 and brings a theatrical setting, social aspects of a party, high fidelity gaming, and unbeatable entertainment. Upcoming performers at the Revel Ovation Hall in 2013 include such celeb’s as Rihanna & Alicia Keys. In 2012, Revel featured performers such as Kanye West in three New Year’s weekend shows, along with Beyonce, who kicked off the official grand opening weekend of this $2.4 billion dollar entertainment resort.

Before booking your adventure to Atlantic City, consider browsing an area map, showing Casino locations, as not all of them are located directly on the boardwalk.

Change In Translation: What Transgender Means for Transhumanism

by Christopher de la Torre

B

ridging transsexuality and transhumanism makes sense. It's possible that transgender people may become the first normalized transhumanist class. I use "normalized" loosely of course, drawing the line at doping athletes and plastic surgery junkies—a moral assertion that gives meaning to this conversation, but something for another time. So, what exactly is transhumanism? Some label it a religion. I see it as something between a philosophy and a cultural movement. To paraphrase philosophers Nick Bostrom and David Pearce, co-founders of the World Transhumanist Association and authors of the Transhumanist Declaration, transhumanism affirms the possibility of improving the human condition through applied reason and technological advancement—the idea being to eliminate aging and suffering, and enhance human capacities across the board. Another key element of

16

www.connextionsmagazine.com

“Opposition” courtesy Andy Karol

ol

transhumanism is the motivation to overcome "fundamental" human limitations. According to Humanity+, an international membership organization that "advocates the ethical use of technology to expand human capacities," transhumanism is about man and technology, taking a “multidisciplinary approach to analyzing the dynamic interplay between humanity and the acceleration of technology.” In both "trans" scenarios, using practical science and technology to transcend biological limitations seems at least the "near-end" goal (the end goal presumably greater social and spiritual fulfillment). Technologies like sexual reassignment surgery and hormone therapy allow transgender people to become what they feel they were meant to be, making autonomy and power practical within both "trans" paradigms. Now, whether being a trans person makes you superior to the rest of us is anyone's guess, but crossing the gender/sexual line to embrace oneself as a new creation does develop a social advantage over those confined to knowing merely one or the other. After all, who is to say that defying the laws of nature to exist as the opposite sex is in anyway different from defying those laws in order to live longer or be smarter or run faster? Technology tells us that we have the power and that we are the agents of our own transformation. A key tenet shared by transgenderism and transhumanism is the use of tech for self-augmentation in order to improve or extend life. Growing up in what you perceive as the wrong body makes me think of what happened to Gregor Samsa in "The Metamorphosis"—living through shock, confusion, disgust and eternal antagonism with the norm—a profound discord between mind, body and soul, while at the same time garnering anything but sympathy from the outside world. Cosmetic surgery is the means to augment or restore a particular body part. Sexual reassignment surgery is more like starting from scratch. But transhumanists and transgender people in fact share a similar philosophy—much to the chagrin of biological essentialists who believe the absolute value in keeping within your original biological form. But as they say: the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

To biological essentialists, transgenderism is an abomination because it seeks not only to abandon the flesh as intended, but to reconstitute it, reauthor it, reimagine what the natural order has either taken for granted or expressly forbidden— to reclaim it. This might sound extreme, but much of society has adopted this bias, which shows in the way we view sex and gender in general. In a time when overt disgust of sex organs is commonplace, to say that you have both male and female sex organs—or that you've had either at one time—is to brand yourself a freak or a monster or somehow inferior. You're misunderstood and perceived as a threat to the status quo, and at the very least you're part of a deviant class in desperate need of correction. But what transhumanism realizes is a collective desire to scrap the worst parts of our human nature and desire, and embrace the beautiful, powerful beings we were meant to be. In Society of the Spectacle, Guy Debord writes, "The only way to counteract the domination of the spectacle is to create a counter-spectacle". In this way, transgender people are one avenue to understand the transhumanist imperative for a bright and abundant post human world.

“WHY?”

The Question that Places Stop Signs Along our Path of Life by Maria Lesetz, Certified Life Coach & Motivational Speaker Our life path isn’t always what we expect. We are often thrown off by the bumps in the road. But one thing that is sure to keep us feeling stuck on that curvy and bumpy road, is when we stop at the road sign that says “WHY?” and keep on asking the question, trying to figure out why something has happened to us, why that person doesn’t want to be friends with us any more, or why we are not as successful as we would like to be.

L

iving in the question is a good thing, but we must ask the questions that are expansive, not the ones that feel restrictive and very limiting to what is possible. As humans, we like to figure it out. We want to know the answers. Even our children ask the question “Why?” alot. But one thing that I have learned over the years is that when we ask a question like “Why?”, but then continue to spin our minds trying to figure out the answer (getting really frustrated when we can’t figure it out), that is when we put a kink in our “manifestation hose”. When I say “manifestation hose”, I am referring to the ease and flow of how our desires and dreams come to us. Anything that you do that makes you feel stuck, frustrated or angry, followed by beating up on yourself, will kink that “manifestation hose”. The things that you desire to create in your life will feel so much harder to achieve. I too have asked the question “Why?” about certain dreams that I have not achieved yet. But what I have found is that when I take a good hard look at the path my life has taken to achieving those dreams, there were paths that presented themselves that I never imagined would happen. At first, some of those paths felt like they were taking me away from my dreams. But when I look back, I see it differently. I realize that everything happens for a reason. And I think to myself …

“What if the delay is just what is needed in order for that big dream to be realized?” So, when you find yourself asking “Why?” and feeling that frustration build up, here’s a suggestion: Ask the question “What would it take?” and then be open to the answer.

“What would it take?”

The answer may not come right away, but you need to trust that the answer will come. There are an infinite number of solutions out there waiting to present themselves, and many are wrapped in a very different package than we ever could have imagined with our minds. And don’t make the mistake of trying to answer that question immediately or believing that the solution resides with something that you must do or act upon right away. The solution may not have anything to do with something you have to do; it may be a path that you are naturally led to that takes you directly to the solution. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have your solutions come to you with ease? It is possible when you embrace the expansiveness of that question and know that the answers can come from anywhere at any time. You just must be open to receive them. Also, there are intermediate steps that take us along the path of life that lead us to our dreams. Some of those steps are necessary and are integral parts of our journey. So, realize that the 1st solution might just be a stepping stone, one that is key to achieving your dreams.

Here are a few examples of how you can turn the “Why?” question into “What would it Take?”: “Why have I not found the love of my life yet?” “What would it take for the love of my life to show up when I least expect it?” “Why is my business not profitable yet?” “What would it take for my business to be successful beyond my wildest dreams?” “Why are there so many horrific things that happen in our society?” What would it take for our society to become more peaceful and loving, resulting in more positive news being reported on a regular basis? “Why does he (or she) not love me?” “What would it take for me to feel loved and cherished everywhere I go?” “Why did I get diagnosed with this health condition?” “What would it take for my body to heal on its own?” “Why can’t I lose this excess weight?” “What would it take for my body to be fit and to feel empowered, healthy and strong all the time?” “Why don’t I have the support of my family and friends?” “What would it take to feel fully supported and know that all is well and that the universe has my back?”

If you look back at many of the why questions, you will see that none of them feel good when you ask them. Even if they don’t apply to your specific life situation, you can tell that the energy behind them is one of disappointment, lack, frustration and despair. But when you ask a different question and in that new question open up to the possibilities of finding the solution, it feels hopeful, inviting and lighter. Doesn’t it? Only you know when asking the question of “Why?” what is keeping you stuck. You just have to look within and pay attention to how you are feeling when you are asking it. Stop being a “figurer outer” (a club I used to be a member of) and start embracing a new way of thinking. Here are three words of advice that came to me during a meditation one day. It’s the best advice my inner guidance has ever given me: Relax, Trust and Allow Relax … knowing that whatever you are trying to figure out has a reason and that you don’t need to know the “why”, you just need to live in the knowing, that ALL is well. Chill out more. Trust … that the path you are on will lead you to the dreams that you have. People find their path in the strangest of ways. But each path has a reason. Just keep the faith that you will create what you desire to have in your life and NEVER give up. Only give up on those negative thoughts because they won’t get you anywhere. They will get you as far as a rocking chair will … back and forth and not moving forward. But at least the rocking chair has a calming effect, where your negative thoughts don’t. So, ditch those negative thoughts, NEVER give up on your dreams and just TRUST that it will all work out in your favor. Allow … for the possibility to be pleasantly surprised at any given moment. Allow your dreams to flow to you. And the only way you do this is by choosing thoughts, questions and feelings that feel expansive, not restrictive and frustrating. When you live in the question of “what would it take?” and expect the answers to come to you, you are well on your way to living a life filled with joy.

5 Reasons to drink more water

Diet: Replace just one soda or sugar filled drink per day with a glass of water and reduce your calorie intake.

Digestion: Drinking a glass of water 30 minutes before each meal makes you feel fuller during mealtime and as a result, you will eat less. Not to mention that drinking water before each meal helps in better digestion of the food.

Energy: Although water does not contribute any energy or fuel to your body, it is necessary and essential to life. There are six essential nutrients: carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins & minerals and water. Only carbohydrates, protein, and fats contribute energy to the body. But dehydration will make you feel fatigued and sluggish.

Skin texture: Money: Save money – tap water with a purifier is free

Dehydration is common, especially in the winter months or in dryer climates. Drinking water will hydrate not only your body, but your skin as well. Ever noticed how great your skin looks after a workout? Increase your blood flow by drinking water -- improve your circulation -- flush away toxins -- contribute to skin that is softer, smoother, and more supple.

Patrick Bryan 21 years old What is your most comfortable outfit? “Since I grew up playing baseball, basketball, and football, I have always been comfortable in athletic wear. You can usually find me in Under Armour, Nike, or Adidas shorts and a t-shirt during the early morning because of my passion for fitness. When going out with friends or on campus at school, you will usually find me in fitted jeans with a v-neck, fitted t-shirt, or thermal. During the summer, khaki shorts, plaid shorts and thong sandals. I’m more of the typical beach boy. American Eagle, Express and H&M is where most of my shopping gets done. I am definitely trying to expand my wardrobe and try new styles. I would like to have more of a stylish professional look outside of the gym.” Apparel by the Esposito Collection (@espositomen)

Bryan Bryan Feiss 31 years old What is your ‘everyday’ style? “Today I'm wearing Everything by All Saints Spitalfields. From day to day if I'm not training at the gym, I'm simple jeans and a t-shirt . I like to dress in the “now” with trends and style – layered, but still have a clean and sophisticated look.” Apparel by the Esposito Collection (@espositomen)

Aninka Doonan 30 years old What are you wearing right now? “I am wearing a business casual outfit in my favorite black color, with the always safe and "in" skinny jeans by DKNY, along with a simple tank top from H&M, and a sweater from Zara to finish my layered simple look. Black Aldo high heeled boots- not too high- just enough to make me feel sexy and comfy to work in all day.

Brendan Amoruso 24 years old What are you wearing and how does it reflect who you are? “I am wearing what I guess you can say is a mix of Ramones/Billy Idol punk, with the whole modern sleek thing going on. I love Guns and Roses, and the shirt I found in London almost ten years ago, as it was my first time out of the country and by myself, so it’s a nice memory of my adventure. I also wear bootcut jeans and Sisley boots that I found on my second journey to Italy. They look a little western, which reminds me of my Mom’s family from Texas. My Karl Lagerfeld jacket tops it off with some modern vibes. Traveling is my love, and learning new cultures and languages, along with meeting interesting people gives me the opportunity to be open to new styles. Other accessories like my snowboarding belt, bottle opener ring and keys on my neck, all reflect little chapters in my life. It’s always best to feel comfortable in what you are wearing -- but more importantly, sure of yourself. I am trying to live life to the fullest and open any new doors along the way. I am outgoing, but there are totally different sides to me that even I still am discovering. It’s what being a Gemini is all about.” Apparel by the Esposito Collection (@espositomen)

Hayden Carroll 23 years old What is your style? “I usually mix my styles up. If its warmer I like to wear fitted jeans and simple white shirts. It's my vain attempt to recapture that classic James Dean look. I spend half my time in a country setting, and half in the city so my style bounces between trashy cowboy and class. Apparel by the Esposito Collection (@espositomen)

I fell in love with the jegging when I first saw them, because they can be cute and also elegant. You could dress them up many ways. I chose a loose fit top and a pair of black pumps.

My second outfit was a loose fit dress, waist belt, tights, and a pair of long boots. I love dressing up and I make sure that everything goes well together, or else I feel out of place. I wore brown boots with my red and black dress because brown goes really well with red.

It’s not the Destination that Counts,

but the Journey

Our First Journey into the unknown by Manny Velasquez-Paredes

Our late nights, became showering the kids by 7pm, putting them to sleep and us getting to bed by 9pm. Our weekends of waking up late, turned into 7am feedings and early ballet classes. The times we spent exploring gay bars in different cities around the world, turned into exploring theme parks and family-friendly restaurants. Where we once had a white love seat, became a brown, easy-to-clean couch for four people. Where we once had a hallway with fragile collectibles, became a place where toys reside. What was once our guest bedroom, became a nursery. Our days went from being able to watch scary movies, to watching Barney and Dora. Suddenly, traveling became a thing of the past, distant memories documented by the thousands of pictures I love to take every time we travel.

A

fter visiting five continents and over 15 different countries, along with countless cities and US states, I can honestly say I love to travel. About eight years ago, I met the man who would later become my life partner, Jose, and we decided to travel and enjoy our romance. Then about a year and a half ago, the heavens blessed us with two beautiful kids, at the time Max had just turned 13 months old and Jaslene had just turned three. Our lives completely changed overnight.

32

www.connextionsmagazine.com

Jose and I managed to take turns with the night feedings and bed wetting incidents, and still be able to function as working adults during the day. Before we knew it, the itch to travel was slowly creeping up on us, so, as first time parents, we headed to Puerto Rico with kids in tow. I decided it would be a good idea to get state IDs for the kids, this makes for a smoother check-in at the airport. We realized after the fact, that the best time to travel with kids is on early morning flights. Our departure flight was scheduled for 6 am, which meant waking the kids up at an unreasonable hour, and leaving the house around 3 am. We managed to keep the kids awake and excited on the way to the airport, and about 30 minutes into the plane ride, their

photos courtesy Manny Velasquez-Paredes

excitement wore off, and they were fast asleep for the rest of the plane ride to Puerto Rico. On the return trip home, we took an afternoon flight and the kids were wide awake and quite hyper. Us, on the other hand, were exhausted and hoped for a nap during the flight home, but such is the burden that parents must bear. I packed extra diapers, extra clothes, extra bathing suits, extra inflatable life protectors, extra snacks, coloring books, a dvd player with kid-friendly movies, but forgot some of the obvious things like extra baby butt paste and sun block. Needless to say, we spent a lot of money getting these, and other small items, at the hotel gift shop. So, when packing, do yourself a favor and don’t forget the baby butt paste! Prior to flying, we made all of the arrangements and requests, such as advising the airline that we had a lap child, making

sure the rental car had baby seats (some companies/locations have a limited amount so reserve them in advance), and requesting a crib for the hotel room (you may need to remind them upon checking in). We had a great time in Puerto Rico and made lasting memories, but be sure to schedule in an afternoon nap into your daily itinerary. Oh, and a cheap umbrella stroller‌ it has become our best friend.

Feel free to e-mail me your comments, thoughts, or questions and I will try to address them in upcoming issues, (velasquezmanny@ gmail.com) (@mannyvp), or head over to www. facebook.com/gayfamilytravel for engagement and interaction with myself and other proud gay parents.

Since our first trip in November of 2011 to Puerto Rico, we have ventured into long road-trips, train rides and even cruises. Each becoming more memorable than the last. I am happy to be sharing our family adventures with you in the coming issues of Connextions Magazine, because it is definitely not the destination that counts, but the journey we take and the memories we create.

The Palm Springs You Don t See

by David Perry

e all know about the White Party and W that it’s the go-to backdrop for a skin flick, but aside from parties and porn, what is there to do in Palm Springs?

When I asked that question, I got a lot of blank looks. I wasn’t alone in my preconception of Palm Springs being either a well-tanned/-toned bacchanalia depot or a…um…well, actually, that was it. Stepping off the plane into the radiant Sonora Desert sun, I saw right away where the “well-tanned” part came from: This town gets nothing but blue skies 300 days out of the year (it was four days before I saw a cloud). As I explored, what struck me was a city so infamous in the gay mind could actually be…normal. To a point. The city’s loving preservation of Mid-Century Modern architecture, and contemporary interpretations of such, gives Palm Springs a retro-future vibe — one part Mad Men, one part Jetsons. Part of a string of towns

36

www.connextionsmagazine.com

studding the Coachella Valley, “PS” really did start out as a bacchanalia depot, coming into existence as a trysting place for Golden Age Hollywood, and welcomed a galaxy of stars escaping Los Angeles’s prying eyes. With LA two hours away, show biz is never far away in the Palm Springs mindset; sometimes it even towers over you, like the 26-ft. “Forever Marilyn” statue of Norma Jeane herself in all her Seven-Year Itch swooshiness (Marilyn Monroe was in fact discovered here, at Charlie Farrell’s Racquet Club). Although several reputable chain hotels are available, I opted for one of the 28 LGBT boutique hotels, and they run the style gamut, from the homey Tortola del Sol to the almost beachy Escape. I checked into the INNdulge (don’t you just love it?). But before you pack, know this: Of those 28 hotels, 26, the INNdulge included, revel in the fact they are “clothing-optional.” If you have the idea that a gay, clothing-optional hotel is a seething hotbed of voluptuous cruising, let’s just

dispel the myth — OF COURSE a gay, clothing-optional hotel is a seething hotbed of voluptuous cruising.

clothing optional hotel Which is good; I’m not interested in a toxically prim heteronormative vacation. While it would be a stretch to say that everybody staying at the INNdulge et al is a lustful cockmonster plotting to take out the pool boy, kicking back with some low-level sexual tension with the guy across the way was fun. But what struck me wasn’t the sex-buzz — or the free WiFi, business center, gym, breakfast buffet, sparkling clean rooms, and an equally sparkling clean pool — but rather the sense of community these smaller hotels foster: The same people come to the same hotel at the same time year after year, creating an extended family. However, in case “clothing-optional” ignites body-image issues, or you have kids in tow, the elegant Pura Vida and arboreal East Canyon Hotel & Spa, require things under wraps. In public. With 40% of the population LGBT, few getaways are so well-positioned for a rainbow-hued respite. The Palm Springs “season” kicks off in October/ November, and runs straight through winter. Warms Sands is the gay section of town (most of the hotels, INNdulge included, are there), but the gay nightlife nexus runs along a span of Arenas

Road in downtown. Lined with bars — Hunter’s Palm Springs, Georgie’s Alibi at Azul, Streetbar, Rainbow Bar & Grill, Spurline, and the oh-so-aptly-named Wang’s — and stores selling both the clothes and implements only gay men know how to utilize and/or activate, I’ve never been to a place where “gay” is so open and unavoidable. Also open and unavoidable is the starkly beautiful landscape of the Coachella Valley itself (was that a great segue or what?). With the San Jacinto Mountains to the west, the Little Santa Rosa Mountains on the east, and the San Andreas Fault (yes, that San Andreas Fault) left of center, newcomers get a 101 on the term “vista.” Judicious use of sprinklers creates a modern oasis, but beyond the city limits lurks the desertscape the Agua Caliente Indians contended with before the arrival of well pumps. A quick drive out of town reveals Indian Canyons and a lone cathedral of palm trees sustained by streams

trickling from the San Jacintos. Amid the fronds are glimpses — petroglyphs, mortars ground into boulders — of the indigenous past. Created by the North American tectonic plate grinding against the Pacific, the San Jacintos soar a lofty 10,833 feet, and the only way up or down is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. A full 20 degrees colder than the valley floor, the peaks, often snow capped in winter, poke into an

entirely different biome. Brittlebush and cacti below; Ponderosa pine, California Black Oak and a lattice of hiking trails up top. The only things one-upping the greenery are the airily vast panoramas of the Coachella Valley and coral-colored sunsets that set the standard. Geology bestows another benefit: There are springs in Palm Springs — hot ones! A perfect way to sooth away a day of trekking is a spell at any number of day spas; the Spa Resort Casino has a “Taking of the Waters” ritual combining a traditional sauna with private baths heated by the Earth itself to a toasty 116° degrees. After rejuvenating comes refueling, and the Palm Springs epicurean scene is a rollicking mix of Mexican spice and local know-how, washed down with some particularly strong margaritas. Coolly chic with an industrial décor, Workshop offers upscale fare, while Lulu and Trio are all über-mod

extravagance, with drinks served in what are possibly small fishbowls. More low-key are hacienda-y Las Casuelas (their shrimp jalapeno poppers are drool-worthy) and Cheeky’s, whose cuisine taps to local ingredients to give a Palm Springs twist. To get the true taste of town, wash it all down with a good date milkshake. So there is much more to Palm Springs than the sex. It’s just a matter of priorities…

or branding purposes, make sure your handle and profile photo are the same on all your social media accounts. Absolutely and under no circumstance, should you post the same content to all your accounts. If your information is time-sensitive and critical, then by all means, it should be posted to all, BUT the message must be tailored to suit the medium. A prime example that I see often is the use of hashtags on facebook, which are unnecessary. Ask yourself this question: Why would a follower want to visit my page? Each of your mediums should have a specific and unique purpose to engage the visitor. Here are examples of how to put each of your social media accounts to best use.

Pictures are perfect. Browsers typically scroll quickly through their news feed and stop when they see something of interest. More likely than not, it is a photo that grabs their attention. If you are a travel agent, posting a destination a day photo is an idea, or if your business sells coffee, consider the many coffee cups that are in this world. How many have you been given as a gift over the years? Put them to use! Do your friends and family drink coffee? Stop by their kitchen and bring your camera. Consider a quote of the day to go with each picture. This gives followers something to look forward to and creates consistency on your page.

Twitter The best social media outlet for up-to-date, real time information. Hashtags are a must if you want to be found on twitter, unless someone happens to be looking at their feed, the moment that you tweet. Find a purpose for your tweets that will engage readers and once again, if you post the same information on other social sites, be sure to tailor it for twitter. Be direct, always add a link, use hashtags, and hope for a ‘RT’ (re-tweet).

40

www.connextionsmagazine.com

Managing several different social media accounts effectively

Google+ Very similar to facebook in the aspect of a social setting, the biggest difference may be that you can divide your contacts into “circles”. Your circles allow you to delineate which information you show to which people. Because facebook and google+ are so similar, it may be tough not to want to post the same photos on both social sites, but try not to unless you are promoting a special within your company or have time-sensitive information to relay. Using the coffee business as our example, maybe on google+ you can feature a daily coffee house or café of interest from around the world? Hashtags are important on google+ as well, so include them in each post.

Instagram Random photos! Again, just as we mentioned with twitter and google+, hashtags are an important part of being found on instagram. Keep this in mind: when we say ‘random photos,’ we don’t mean pictures of your animals or your favorite plant, unless they somehow relate to your company’s products or services. A relatable example might be to grab your hot cup of coffee and set

it on the window sill during a snowy winter day. Snap a photo and write something clever about keeping warm with your favorite cup of java. Hashtags are a must and use of common tags, as well as uncommon tags, will be beneficial.

Linkedin Company Pages Job opportunities, press releases about your company, self-promotion and special deals are great ways to use Linkedin company pages. If your company has been featured by any media outlets, be sure to include this in your updates as well.

Take note: The purpose of businesses creating social media accounts is obviously to gain followers. The more followers that you have, the greater possibility of selling your products or services. Please remember that the quickest way to lose followers is to self-promote on a constant basis. The truth is this: Followers do not care about your business, they care about what is ‘in it for them.’ Give them what ‘they’ want, not what ‘you’ want them to have.

In Review Rainbow Plantation Blues

Fiction/Historical Novel by Robert L. Sheeley Brilliantly written! Sheely has written this novel with incredible historical detail, as if he is reflecting on his own past, although not possible since the story takes place in the 1850’s. There is just enough drama in the novel to keep you turning pages, but not so over dramatic that it seems an unbelievable tale. The story depicts equality issues, such as slavery, women’s rights, and gay liberation – from the perspective of life in a pre-civil war era. Not only do the characters in this book undergo a self-discovery process, but they also discuss their uncertainty for the future of America, which is ironically similar to what many of us are presently going through. While reading, I was filled with a sense of hope -learning where we were as a segregated nation, and knowing where we are today. Change is inevitable. My so-often feelings of despair in this-age society in America were given a short break during this read, and I felt a greater appreciation for my life and the freedom I have been granted. In a brief conversation with the author, here is his response to my most important question: “Yes, there will be a sequel but not for about a year.” Book Description: "In 1850, Jonathan Thomas, a young, personable, and aristocratic Southern gentleman, has returned to his antebellum home from an Ivy League school in the North. His father is dying and Jonathan is sole heir to the family's lavish prosperous, and renowned Rainbow Plantation. While up North, two major revelations had seriously shaken his self-image. His exposure to Northern abolitionism had permanently shaken his outlook on slavery, the South's peculiar institution. Worse, he had begun to believe he might be a sodomite, a most wretched creature reviled by the customs of nineteenth-century American society. When he tours the plantation grounds for the first time in years, he sees that his boyhood playmate, a slave named Kumi, has matured into a black Adonis. Jonathan is instantly captivated. Now he is convinced he is a sodomite, and even worse, he is hopelessly smitten over a slave. As he grapples with his sexual proclivity and the peculiar institution, he befriends Steven Wentworth, a social non-conformist living an esoteric lifestyle, who has a deep, hidden connection to him. Under Steven's progressive influence, and from another unlikely source-the Bible-Jonathan is able to unravel his demons and triumph in the end."

Derek Bishop Album: Resistance is Beautiful Available at iTunes $9.99

MUSIC

Derek Bishop, an alternative singer/songwriter, released his debut album “Resistance is Beautiful” in 2011. The CD contains 12 tracks, including the song titled “Find Him Again” which is listed as explicit in the iTunes store. This particular song, with wonderfully written, story-like lyrics, depicts the anger and emotional distress of a breakup, yet it is not set in the sad, dark and depressing musical tone as you might expect. Bishop’s vocals are sung amidst a contemporary, fast beat, electro-pop sound. Kudos to Derek Bishop on his use of interesting instruments throughout the CD, including the ukulele, keyboard, banjo, saxophone and even a trombone, as well as his remarkable song writing ability. The lyrics in each song are instantly relatable. Although available in an easy downloadable format, I would highly suggest ordering the CD directly from Bishop’s website. The photography and design of the high-quality CD cover, along with the printed insert of song lyrics is superlative. http://derekbishop.net

Josh Dubovie Album: Carpe Diem Available at iTunes $9.99

MUSIC

21 year old Josh Dubovie released his CD titled “Carpe Diem” in 2011. The 11 track CD offers a tender expression of feelings, mixed with a quick tempo and fun ‘pop-style’ rhythm, comparable to artists such as Grammy Award winning, Michael Buble. Also included on this latest CD is Dubovie’s rendition of “Chasing Cars,” originally written and recorded by Snow Patrol. With vocals being the most prominent feature of the song, Josh’s talent is clearly portrayed. Josh Dubovie is an international pop vocalist from Essex, England. Dubovie is best known for his performance in 2010 at the popular Eurovision Song Contest. The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the longest running television shows in the world. In 1956, Europe saw the first ever Eurovision Song Contest, and after 56 years running, the contest is one of the most typical European traditions. Song samples, including “Game Over” and “This Ain’t Right” can be heard on Dubovie’s website. www.joshdubovie.info

Many cities have been self-proclaimed as “the birthplace of rock and roll,” including Memphis, TN because of the many pioneers, such as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash, who recorded their ground breaking hits; Hattiesburg, MS as noted in the Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock and Roll, because of a song recorded in 1936 that featured guitar riffs and a rock & roll beat; and of course, Cleveland, OH, because it is the home of the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” Well, you can add Wildwood, NJ to this self-proclaimed list because of the “Rock Around the Clock” performance on Memorial Day weekend in 1954 by “Bill Haley & His Comets.” Most notable events during the year at Wildwood -- the Firefighter’s Convention and parade in September, and the Ultimate Flying Disk competition, that attracts over 5,000 players and is the largest annual beach Ultimate tournament in the world.

Asbury Park on The Jersey Shore In 1974, legendary music club, The Stone Pony, opened its doors for the first time. The Stone Pony hosted many native New Jersey musicians including performers such as Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen. Since then, many of the world's most popular musicians have played The Stone Pony and perhaps it can be considered one of the greatest rock & roll venues of all time. Venues like The Stone Pony, The Wonder Bar, Paramount Theatre and Convention Hall have not only helped launch many musicians' careers but they also contributed to the creation of an entire music genre known as the Jersey Shore sound.

Asbury Park is located 60 miles south of New York City and approximately 90 minutes north of Atlantic City. With year round events at venues conveniently located along the Asbury Park boardwalk, there’s no shortage of entertainment. For a taste of the culture at Asbury Park in a uniquely designed website, along with a list of upcoming events, venues, & attractions, a visit to apboardwalk.com is recommended. Of all the Jersey Shore destinations, Asbury Park is the gay beach of choice. With its hip vibe, diversity is welcomed! Asbury Park also hosts the Jersey Pride celebrations that take place annually in early June.

Jersey City More than just a gateway to America’s ‘Big Apple’, Jersey City offers the most phenomenal skyline view of New York City. Clean, quiet, diverse, and only minutes from the city that never sleeps. Main attractions such as the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, a historical walking tour, and sailing along the Hudson River are just a few favorites to keep you entertained. High rent, taxes and utility costs in Manhattan have prompted many companies to relocate across the Hudson to Jersey City, now being called “the sixth borough” or “Wall Street West.” This growth trend of businesses relocating into New Jersey began in the 1990’s and continues today. With lower overhead costs for businesses, travelers are sure to find great deals.
