Point, Line, and Plane This project explores the process of abstraction by extracting and creating various spatial components from nature and applying them through a series of drawings and a final model made from bristol paper. The first drawings that were developed included a program that was used throughout the exercise: overlapping three planes resulted in denser parallel lines, overlapping two planes resulted in looser parallel lines, and no overlapping resulted in no lines. This program combined with abstracted lines from the plant produced the combined abstracted drawing. The 3D model also used this program in terms of shadows. The circular and asymmetrical rectangular shapes overlapped with each other to either produce heavy shadows or no shadows (no overlap).

Study model
This project examines the importance of the site in terms of preservation and spatial understanding. Within the site, paths and thresholds operate together to provide adequate circulation and space. The idea was to create a tourist space that would expand from the bottom to the top in terms of light and open space. The result was an underground space used for gathering spaces (large space in the middle and several smaller spaces surrounding it) and multiple levels of floors for sightseeing and circulation. Movement is demonstrated by the act of moving through each floor as well as looking at the movement of people. Section and plan drawings were introduced and utilized in this assignment.

Occupiable Walls This project explores the possibilities of space given a kit of parts and the task of creating two apartments for a social science scholar and an environmental science scholar. The site of the apartment complex is between the Roxy Hotel and the Engineer’s Bookstore, surrounded by a garden on one side and plaza on the other. The space consists of two apartment complexes on each side, both with two floors and a balcony, and a shared space in the middle. The social science scholar would enter through the left side of the building facing the plaza and street, while the environmental science scholar would enter through the right side of the building. The spaces are specialized to each person. The environmental science scholar has a larger more protruded balcony so that he/she could study and look at the landscape up close. The social science scholar has a corner balcony, establishing a comprehensive view of the plaza without needing to move.

Living Lighthouse In this project, an abstraction of the previous “occupiable walls” project was used to create micro housing unit apartments. The solid/void relationship from the previous project is exemplified by the apartment organization (apartment, open space, apartment) as well as the solid structure hanging on the right (balcony previously). This relationship was translated through the micro housing tower with the offset nature of the units and the open spaces within the atrium of the building. The hanging structure, now used as a climbing wall, was an integral part of the composition, composing a interruption in the dense building and operating as a solid.
