UR B A N FOOD Retail Project 185 Channel Street San Francisco, CA 94158

Site Analysis

History For over 5000 years, Mission Bay was a home to coastal Native Americans. It was once a saltwater marsh and lagoon that remained a cove of calm and protected water. During the gold rush, Mission Bay was still a shallow and wide marsh with the main industries of repair and shipbuilding. In the late 1800s, Mission Bay’s water grew smaller and filled with rocks, sand, dirt, and the waste from the earthquake was dumped there. Then it was covered with manmade land and became an industrial area of the city in the 20th century. Horse drawn vehicles, railroad cars, and tracks were used for transporting cargo back and forth to the shipyards, factories, and warehouses in the area. Present Mission Bay Now Mission Bay is a neighborhood of luxury condominiums, business zones, research, and high-end restaurants. The Mission Bay project is one of the biggest urban development projects in the city after the Golden Gate Park construction. Mission Bay is a very laid back and quiet neighborhood, it is only crowded during the baseball games at AT&T Park. There are several big and clean public spaces like parks, jogging tracks, and beautiful views to the Bay Bridge.

Chiaroscuro the concept of this unit is about light and dark .

Chiaroscuro is an Italian word which means

the use of strong contrast between light and dark that affect the whole composition or also known as monochrome. Usually artists like the expressionists and other modern movements such as photographers and cinematographers use this term for their artwork. In this unit level, chiaroscuro is the perfect concept to show the characteristic of the client. This concept shows maculinity and boldness to the space. The concept of light and dark will be applied to the shades of monochromatic colors from the materials. The materials that will be mostly used are dark wood and marbles. Contrasting them dark materials with white painted walls and gold colored furniture with yellow colored lighting. This composition of chiaroscuro gives a direct emphasis and strong focus towards the space, yet the lighting gives a warm ambience and the furniture selection gives simplicity to the space. The style chosen for this unit is modern design which also includes geometric shapes and simple smooth designed furniture and walls.

Rice Field Terrace The

concept of this project is rice field terrace .

The reason behind this concept is to

incorporate the element of nature to textile design. This concept is also related to one of the interior design project that has been made previously. With this concept, it emphasizes the details of the curved lines, layers, depth, and division. There wil be drawings and patterns of the various grains leaves, curved line structure of the rice field alignments, depth and layers of the rice field stacks, and the scenery of people working in the rice field terrace. To be more specific, it is a personal related concept that brings back the designer’s hometown memories. the specific place of this rice field terrace is from Bali in Indonesia. It reminds the designer of her home country and childhood. Everytime she passes by small villages, there are a lot of beautiful rice field terrace with mountain backgrounds.
