! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Program Note ! ! ! This piece, dedicated with gratefulness to Trio Phoenix, follows a meditative journey from billowing chaos to quiet, serene stasis. I’ve noticed that there is a great deal of music which concerns itself with the concept of organic growth but not so much music concerned with organic decay - a concept every bit as embedded within the natural world and the human experience, and arguably just as beautiful. To that end, I thought it would be interesting to write a piece which begins in medias res at peak ferocity and gradually dwindles down to a calm whisper.!

! ! Performance Notes ! !

• The plus sign (+) above the low A note calls for a “muting” technique. Touch the end of the string with one hand and play the key with the other; be sure to touch it enough to alter the timbre but not enough to significantly dampen the sound and vibrating potential.!

!

• Starting at rehearsal G, each of the three piano staves has its own dynamics which are written below the respective staves. Up until that point, the dynamics below the top staff apply to the top two staves, while the dynamics between the bottom two apply to the lowest staff only.!

!

• Remember to keep the damper pedal down for the entire duration of the piece!! Strings:!

!

! • Roman numerals indicate string numbers.! !

• s.p. 1 indicates sul ponticello; s.p. 2 indicates molto sul ponticello (right near the bridge, only a faint whisper of a tone); s.p. 3 indicates bowing on the bridge.!

! • dashed line with arrow indicates a gradual change from one bow technique to another.! !

• Natural harmonics are notated in two different ways: If it is the second partial (one octave above open string) the note head is normal and there is a little harmonic circle symbol on the note head. These harmonics sound at the written pitch. All other types of natural harmonics used (third, fourth, and fifth partials) are notated with a diamond-shaped note head that indicates where to finger the node on the open string. Sometimes a string number is written for extra clarity. ! All:!

!

• Accidentals hold through the measure.!
