DESIGNER: CONNOR JOHNSON
Through my experiences in architecture school and professionally, I have learned that architecture is a multifaceted profession that encompasses more than any material, structure, or form. Architecture, at its core, is all about how people; their physical and emotional connection to the built environment.

MODULE 1: COMPOSITIONS
The studies of making through techtonic and steriotomic explorations gave way to an intricate higharchy of moves within a complex framework. This method of composition was then translated to occupiable space.
Following inspiration from Gee’s Bend’s quilts, a drawing was composed based on architectural rules found in the quilts.
Hybrid models combine both types of construction, increasing complexity. These were then scaled up to address a loss of detail on a larger scale.
Shown in this drawing is the layering of tectonic elements into a steriotomic base.
The final composition consists of large movements in the form of slices through the steriotomic elements of solid wood. Smaller moves bridge these slices , providing a framework for techtonic elements, planes, and larger sticks to sit within. A unique layering of planes creates a languange of all of the moves within the composition.
MODULE 2: TRANSFORMATION
Taking inspiration from Peter Zumthor’s Witch Memorial , a diagramatic analysis was conducted to inform rules for its construction. These rules were then used to create a sculpture from Zumthor’s work.
Diagrams of the Witch Memorial give insight into the rules for composing a building
Using previous rules from the construction of the section model , a transformation of those rules was explored through sketching and finally into a digital model.
This transformation in the form of a sculpture makes use of the architectural opperatives , array, compress, and stretch.
Array: orthagonal rectangles forming a structure
Stretch: planes within the structure
Compress: the curve formed by varying heights in rectangles
MODULE 3: A SPACE TO ESCAPE
By making use of the stratigies for composing a structure through the semester this prject is a culmination of how a composition and opperative words can inform occupiable space.
Between quick modeling and repetitive sketching , the organization and forms were arranged with strong inspiration from Zumthor’s Witch memeorial and my own sculptural transformation.
