revitalize the addition to the theodor heuss bibliothek in berlin was a task that desired to be more than added square footage for a small town library, it needed to become the new face of a historical neighborhood. this library has sat in the schonenberg area almost unnoticed by many of the locals for decaded. this study was to create a new way for berliners and travelers alike to view and discover the library. with a large amount of added program snaking its way from the street, into the courtyard, and over the top of the library, its place in the city blocks have been reestablished as a dominant feature. the library was also a study of systems and how a complex facade panel system could create interesting exposures throughout the building faces.

Threshold
threshold A look at the Boston Government Service Center, one of Paul Rudolph’s largest projects, and the intervention that would create a more permeable aspect to a largely unused superblock.
This constructed threshold is to create a bridge between the exterior and the large interior courtyard, formed through study of the specific spaces and the intervention of distinct materials. Forged through a series of Cor-ten steel panels overlapping one another to encase the form that bridges the massive gap between the three distinct spaces in the one corner of the GSC.

sanctuary
sanctuary an urban place of mourning and reflection, the sanctuary sits in boston as a unifying place, welcoming all of those in need. large chasm-like spaces create a sense of awe and understanding, feeling as a smaller piece, a part of a much larger puzzle. the building begins to pull away from the busy city streets and into an inward reflectance, base in both elevation change and in a skyward shift, spaces are defined by how they react to the exterior.

analyze
research as a way of understand building development through a concept and the details of different facade systems, the tod’s building by toyo ito in tokyo, japan provided an interesting case study. diagraming how the facade system was conceived and executed helped us to understand the building as it stands now, as well as build a diagramatic version of the building faces using the same techniques. the many facets of ito’s building were explored and discovered through progamatic and spacial diagraming through section and plan. the concept of the facade design wrapping around the building in a seamless fashion seems simple by design but requires much study and consideration when executed.

, the new center for music and the performing arts seeks to create dynamic and well defined spaces that celebrate the many artists that would inhabit it. focused around a central core, much of the programing is reached through a series of circulation paths that take visitors throughout the building, pushing them towards the exterior whilst simultaneously pulling them back towards the center. moving from the top of the building to the bottom becomes a sequence of the arts from private practice to grand performances.

F RAGMENT
OF
T RANQUILITY
Fragment of Tranquility seeks to create a new landmark within the North End, stretching up above the monotonous roofscape surrounding DeFilippo Park. The four center towers act as a beacon of the city among the Zakim Memorial Bridge and Bunker Hill Monument, calling those in the area to approach and experience an escape from the clutter of the city. Sprawling lawns surround the central towers; they are pierced by a fractured stairway through the site, providing an intense contrast of material and architecture. The park provides open air space for outdoor performance, relying on those who congregate there rather than built architecture. A below grade level performance theater takes in light from the connecting tower and channels the outdoor atmosphere into a theatrical aspect. This park seeks to become a beacon for all of the North End to congregate and experience culture as a community.

Accumulate A study of light and construction through a system of cable ties to create a piece that diffuses both sound and light.
Hanging from a waveform shaped grid, a panel three feet wide and five feet long 5’ x 2’ wire mesh
containing over 3000 cable ties was constructed to study the effects of an accumulated system in light and sound.
What was discovered was a system of diffusers that created ambient light accross a wide area as well as a mode 3000ct. 8 inch zip ties
of noise diffusement. Originally envisioned as a massive ceiling piece, the installation was realized to have many possibilities, uses and hopes to gro
Scandinavia An installation created for the Wentworth Institute of Technology Casella Gallery to showcase the experiences and interactions that 30 students encountered in their travels accross
Scandinavia. The gallery was filled with frames, hand built from recycled pallets to create a display of numerous images from all accross northern Europe. The wire frame mesh mold in the center was crafted to resmble two distinct mountain ranges that were seen in
Norway, casting intense shadows about the entire gallery.
