Extensive Tree Planting
Cleaned Canal
This alternative proposal would see the planting of an extensive tree line between the pathway and the canal itself. In addition, the placing lamp posts at very close intervals this will ensure that the towpath is very well lit for pedestrians at night, and would give the pathway an entirely new character and ambiance. After the break at the Gortgonis Road, the foliage of the second section of the towpath becomes much denser, with a treeline either side of the pathway. This proposal seeks to replicate this enclosed feeling of nature along the canal towards Coalisland.
Resurfaced Pathway
Street Lamps
However, this proposal is considered an alternative as the second section of the towpath is not as extensively used as the first section, and there may be difficulties in replicating the desired effect. Also there may be concerns that the additional tree line could intimidate the walker and make them feel unsafe, especially If they are alone.

Cycle Path
Alternative Concept Image - Cycling This alternative proposal would see extensive changes to the towpath to make it as pedestrian and cycling friendly as possible. The pedestrian pathway has been widened and a cycle path has been created in place of large part of the grass bank. Light boxes on a grass strip between the cycle path and the water would illuminate the area. The canal water will undergo extensive cleaning, with any foliage and debris being cleared away. However, this proposal is considered an alternative due to potential issues of health and safety as there are no railings between the cycle path and the water, and the path may become slippery if the weather is poor.
