Cuilin House Redevelopment As part of an initiative to rejuvenate the area of Glasnevin, Dublin 9, the Dublin City Council employed the help of the DT175A final year Architectural Technology class to propose possible solutions for redeveloping an important historic building, Cuilin House. The class divided into groups, each producing a detailed proposal, the winning entry to be employed as part of the scheme. The group submittal would then establish the foundation for individual thesis projects. The proposal involved a detailed conservation, historic and dilapidations study. The Unit 5 proposal focused on preserving the historic interest of the building and outlined a contemporary addition to provide spaces set out in the brief.

Investigating Energy Conservation in the Retrofit of a Protected Structure This Thesis investigates the conservation of energy in the refurbishment of Cuilin House, a protected structure in Glasnevin, Dublin 9. Legislation and guidance are reviewed and outlined on the appropriate treatment of traditionally constructed and historically significant buildings. In accordance with this, a suitable thermal upgrade of the existing building is specified. The thermal performance of the building is compared, before and after the proposed renovation, using a steady state overall heat loss method of simple and numerical calculations to show the energy saving which can be achieved within the limitations of conservation requirements, in order to reduce the building’s carbon emissions.

Bank of Ireland Arts Centre As part of an initiative to rejuvenate the dilapidated areas of Dublin City centre the school of architecture was invited to submit proposals for various landmark locations. The final year B.Sc Arch Tech students teamed up with the final year B. Arch class to produce work which would form both dissertation projects. The students worked together, simulating the workings of a professional situation, and developed a design which would suggest sustainable development for the aforementioned abandoned areas in the city. The B.O.I. Project, given its central location, focused towards off-site fabrication and repetitive modularisation. Buildability, cost and maintenance issues were high priority to make this a sustainable proposal, one which the city could most effectively benefit from.

The high level of glazing proposed by the architect required the specification of high performance insulants and this called for accurate yet simplistic detailing. The off-site fabrication of all elements meant allowing for carefully calculated tolerances in the joining of elements. The success of this project afforded me a first class honours in completing my B.Sc Arch Tech level 7 degree and secured me a place in the add-on B.Sc (Hons) Arch Tech programme the following year.

Conservation of an Historic Georgian Building 41 Upper Dominic Street, Dublin 1 The Dominic St. area is of great historical significance, exhibiting some of the most complete and best preserved Georgian town houses in the country. As an exercise in the evaluation of historic importance a full conservation survey was carried out at 41 Upper Dominic St. which is now a multi-use building with a pub on the ground floor and private dwellings on the upper floors. This consisted of a photographic survey, dilapidation report, full scheduling of fixtures and details and outlines for the repair of damaged aspects of the house.

Detail Investigation of an Existing Building Maison de Verre, Paris To understand the variance between modern and outdated construction techniques a study was conducted on an early 20th Century building which, given its colourful construction process, would have been undertaken in a very different way had it been a modern day project. One comes to appreciate the advances made in recent decades in both thermal performance and efficient construction sequencing. Detailing was designed for the existing residence using modern construction methods.

Wasastjerna Cabin and Sauna Renovation My first design project for P&H was overlooking a picturesque Finish landscape. It was important to the client to make minimal changes to the existing building but, having fallen into disrepair, it was also essential to provide a construction which would be appropriate to sustain the harsh winter weather conditions.
WASASTJERNA
The client was presented with two options for the sauna renovation. The latter at a slightly higher cost proposed to economise on space by raising part of the loft, allowing for a third bench level.
Type: Cabin/Sauna Renov.
Using BIM at the concept stage made client participation and feedback considerably more direct. Visualising the spaces at an early stage of planning allowed us to foresee problem areas as well as ensuring satisfaction with design decisions before moving on to the next phase.
Location: Helsinki Year: On-going
An outcome of this project was the verification that even for smaller scale projects, BIM allows for a greater speed in conceptual planning, coherency in documentation and clear delivery of ideas and suggestions to the client.

Linna Conservation Retrofit Ulakko ja Hiisi A relatively small amount of attic spaces are renovated for housing in Helsinki each year as conservation parameters are very strict. However, with the proper planning and provision of information the conservation department are happy to see these beautiful spaces used to their full potential. This project involved accurate surveying and documenting of the existing condition of the building. Due to the protected nature of much of the facades and Horrmit, designing the spaces was a challenge, particularly in providing sufficient natural light. It was decided to raise sections of the roof to the courtyard facade in order to provide terrace space and to open up the floor plan and allow greater head heights thus increasing habitable space.
LINNA Type: Conservation Retrofit Location: Helsinki Year: On-going
The retrofit also includes the opening up of new replica dormer windows to the street facade, requiring detailed studies of the street scape and overall area. Renovation projects can be challenging in terms of planning, and conservation parameters add to this considerably. Planning spaces and construction to fit with existing form pushes us as designers to become more practical and considerate.

3D SECTION BUILDING 5
Tapulin Huolto Roofing and HVAC renovation The scope of the projects was to replace the existing roof tiles with a zinc standing seam finish. Other work included planning for fire escape and access to the roof for snow cleaning. It included also the renovation of the HVAC systems in the complex. Working in a common tool allowed each discipline to have input from early on in the planning process as to what each of their particular needs were. For example, by creating a 3D representation of the original as-builts enabled us to ensure sufficient space in the attic for new machinery using BIM clash detection between elements.

Oker Blom summer cottage renovation An important part of harnessing the efficiency of BIM is understanding the needs of a client. Even at an early sketch phase, basic conceptual renders can give the client a good idea of space and scale. In this project the client had a very clear idea of what they required in terms of programme but had difficulty in realising the design spatially. Again, Revit proved to be the most effective way of conveying our design intent.
OKER BLOM
The existing house had a very shallow pitch and was in poor condition. By increasing the pitch of the roof and keeping the level of the wall plate we allowed for the addition of a loft over the bedroom/bathroom and a high ceiling in the living area. Lowering the sill level maximised the view of the surrounding area for the user and allowed more light to penetrate the spaces during the darker winter months.

International Design Build Competition ‘12 Associated Schools of Construction, Dallas, Texas In February 2012 I had the privilege of teaming up with a multidisciplinary group of students from DIT and Oklahoma University. Over the course of a number of months, via skype, we collaborated in different ways in preperation for what would be the most demanding week of our lives. My role as BIM Coordinator for the project meant that I oversaw the cooperation of very different people, working together to find holistic answers to design questions. The format of the competition was extremely challenging. We were given a Request for Proposal (RFP) to design a project, estimate the cost, schedule the construction process and provide a management plan. Once we received the RFP the team was sequestered on campus in Oklahoma University without access to advisers, and were given 16-hours to complete the challenge. Following the ‘lockdown’ the team traveled to Dallas to submit our completed design package and prepare for a panel presentation. ww Check out the story of our success at: ascdesignbuild.wordpress.com
