Potentially hazardous deficiencies (four- or five-point demerit items) are noted. These must be corrected immediately and inspectors say they are often corrected while the inspection is underway. Restaurants earning below 70 must raise their scores within seven days or face closure.

work Continued from Page 1A wound onto multiple reels packed into locked metal boxes. They’re typically new prints — they haven’t been unpacked and exhibited somewhere else. It’s one of Drube’s jobs on Wednesdays to “build” the upcoming new movies, meaning he splices the reels of film together along with the correct previews, as dictated by the distributing studios and by common sense. “You wouldn’t want Toy Story 3 with a ‘chainsaw massacre’ preview,” for example, Drube said. The little blurb of film that promotes Dolby stereo is also spliced in, he said. The splicing is done with a blade and tape the way home movie buffs have done it for decades. A film that’s all spliced together and is ready to be shown is on a single large reel that rests horizontally on a large silver-colored platter. It’s spooled into the projector from the center of the reel and winds its way through the machine in such a way that when it’s taken up at the end, it’s already correctly positioned for another play. In other words, you don’t have to rewind the thing. “Once you get the hang of everything, you can pretty much do it with your eyes closed,” said Drube. But the nice thing about years of experience, he said, is that if something does go wrong, “you can trust yourself to fix it.” After the film is built comes the fun part — watching it to make sure it has no presentational flaws that would annoy patrons in the seats below. “That’s an added bonus to the job,” Drube said. “You get to see movies

Tim Drube feeds 35 mm film into a projector. before anybody else.” Two of the theater’s projectors display digital movies. A movie in this form arrives as a box that’s about the size of a videocassette. Drube attaches it to a server and uploads the movie; the uploading takes as long as the movie is long. Previews are loaded in with simple clicks and drags of a mouse. Drube said the favorite part of his job is when everything is running smoothly and he gets an hour or so to relax in the projection room. Least favorite? “Probably concessions,” he said. “There’s only a certain number of popcorns you can make before you get sick of the smell.” Readers who know of interesting jobs — or perhaps common jobs that involve more than meets the eye — are invited to email bedwards@annistonstar.com for a possible write-up for “Off to Work.”
