season, and we’ll likely see the last of the flying jewels about the same time as the last leaves touch the ground. It’s hard to say goodbye to summer on the lake, but we don’t have to face that difficulty quite yet. We have a few more weeks to enjoy the water, the Southern heat and the busy butterflies working the flowers.

as that a leaf or a butterfly floating past my head, just outside my field of vision? This time of year, it’s hard to tell. With week upon week in August offering barely a hint of rain, some leaves gave up and left their branches long before temperatures started to drop. On the other hand, September is the high season for butterflies in Alabama. Bright yellow sulphurs, brilliant orange and glinting silver gulf fritillaries, several species of huge black swallowtails, and if we’re lucky this year, visiting Monarchs on their way to Mexico. The butterflies love the clear, dry days we have in September, when the summer’s flowers reach their peak, whether in manicured gardens or untended fields of goldenrod, morning glory or Queen Anne’s lace. You can see them working their way from flower to flower or settling in brightly colored clouds onto a damp river bank to siphon water from the mud. Like the summer, the butterflies are with us for a limited number of weeks. They appear one or two at a time as soon as the temperature reaches a comfortable shirtsleeves level, then multiply like crazy as their favorite food plants begin to flourish in the summer heat. But the first falling leaves signal the imminent end of butterfly

Traveling the Coosa Whitewater Holiday Our intrepid kayaker ventures beyond the shores of the Coosa for some whitewater paddling on the Nantahala and Hiwassee rivers. by DAVID ATCHISON Photos provided by the Nantahala Outdoor Center and Adventures Unlimited

O

n my last trip, I did the unusual and ventured off the Coosa River, dipping my kayak paddle in some whitewater in two states north of Alabama — what an experience. I had planned a five-day trip to the Nantahala River Gorge in North Carolina, but things didn’t go as planned. Only a day before I had planned to leave, the friend I was going to paddle with was forced to cancel because of a family emergency. I had already notched out a week of vacation, so for me there was no turning back. I went directly to Plan B, which I basically didn’t have, but formulated pretty 6

darn quick. First off, I called fellow kayaker and friend Larry Davis of Pell City. Larry is the manager for the St. Clair County Airport. I asked Larry if he was still interested in paddling the Hiwassee River in Tennessee. He was, so we agreed to meet at a camp near Cleveland, Tenn., called River Rats on Friday and run the Hiwassee that day and Saturday. Next I got on the phone and called the Nantahala Outdoor Center, which is about 12 miles south of Bryson City, NC. NOC sits along the Nantahala River Gorge, at the intersection of the Appalachian Trail and the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail.

The Nantahala Outdoor Center provides a village-type atmosphere along the Nantahala River Gorge. NOC offers a wide variety of outdoor adventures, including rafting trips down the Class 2-3 river.

NOC offers guided rafting trips down the Nantahala. It also offers kayak instruction and guided kayaking trips down the gorge. I’ve wanted to paddle the Nantahala for more than a year but things have always come up preventing it, so I booked a one-day venture with NOC — it was worth it. My trip down the Nantahala was set for Thursday. I planned to arrive a day early, so I could find where everything was. I left Pell City on Wednesday. 8

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2011

It’s about a four-hour drive from Pell City, a really beautiful drive. I wasn’t going to stop anywhere, but go directly to where I was camping Wednesday and Thursday night. However, the Nantahala River flows alongside the highway going to NOC, and I couldn’t resist stopping to take a look at Patton’s Run, the first major rapid in the 8-mile whitewater run. I finally arrived at the Lost Mine Campground at about 5 p.m. Wednesday. I was up early Thursday morning, real early. I was now on

Kayak instructor Gary Studwell assisted the author down the Nantahala River Gorge.

Eastern Standard Time. I was meeting my guide and instructor Gary Studwell across from the NOC Outdoor Store. I arrived early, so I decided to check out the outdoor store. I’m always saying you never know who you are going to meet on a kayaking trip; well, lo and behold, the manager of the store, Howard Chambers, was someone I knew. I haven’t seen him in almost 13 years. I met Howard when I was an outdoors writer for The Montgomery Advertiser. Howard worked at Southern Trails in Montgomery at the time. He is an expert in the field of outdoors and knows everything about paddling, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking and camping equipment. We talked for a little while, catching up on the past 13 years in about 13 minutes. I said my goodbyes and headed back to the general store, where I met Gary. Gary is about my age. Originally from Connecticut, he ended up with a professional job in Texas until the economy sent him to the Nantahala, where he now makes a living guiding people down the gorge in kayaks and rafts. Kayaking is a passion for him.

PLAN AHEAD

Gary is very articulate and was a great instructor and guide for me that day. That morning, we loaded up and headed to Fontana Lake for some kayak-rolling practice. Gary dissected my roll technique and by the end of the practice session, I was rolling “effortlessly.” We headed back to NOC and had lunch before hopping from eddy to eddy down the Nantahala River Gorge. The run down the Nantahala was a blast. It was rapid after rapid. The trip ends with a run down the Class 3 Nantahala Falls. I’m ready to go back and give those falls another try. Turns out, there are a lot of people who have paddled the Nantahala from our area. I found out that Paul Golden, owner of I-20 Carpet in Pell City, was there only a couple of days after I made my run, rafting the cold river that averages about 54 degrees Fahrenheit. The water that forms the Nantahala River Gorge is pumped from the bottom of Nantahala Lake, and the water is ice cold, numbing cold, and can at times easily reach into the 40s. Dr. Eric Hicks of Pell City is another Nantahala River fan. He warned me of the raft traffic along the gorge. He was right. There was raft after raft, but it really didn’t bother me. As Gary said, in a kayak you can go places the rafts can’t.

In his most recent kayaking excursion, author David Atchison paddles the rapids of the Hiwassee River in Tennessee and the Nantahala River Gorge in North Carolina.

Dr. Eric Hicks of Pell City, far left in both pictures, steers an NOC raft down the Class 3 Nantahala Falls.

If you want to raft the Nantahala, Gary suggests using a guide at least once before attempting it on your own. Hicks has tackled the Nantahala with family and friends, guiding their rented NOC raft on his own, but he has quite a bit of rafting experience. “It’s the only river we do ourselves,” Hicks said. As on the Hiwassee River, professional photos are offered to those who paddle the Nantahala River Gorge. NOC has a professional photographer posted at Nantahala Falls. Adventures Unlimited professional photographers offer Hiwassee photographs from the whitewater run at Devil Shoals. As you can see from the photos provided, both do a really great job. The following morning after my exciting run down the

Nantahala River, I packed up my camping gear and drove to the River Rats campgrounds, where I met Larry and his wife Stephanie. It was about a one-hour drive. They were already set up and ready to go by the time I arrived. This was going to be the first trip down the Hiwassee for Stephanie in a whitewater kayak. She is a kindergarden teacher at Lincoln Elementary School. Only a week or two before, I paddled with Larry and Stephanie down the whitewater section of the Coosa River. The Hiwassee was a step up for Stephanie, and she did great. She only started kayaking in whitewater in June, and she already looks really comfortable on the water. Her run down the Hiwassee was perfect, and the trip was a great way to celebrate my birthday. Let’s don’t say which one

All three paddlers are very experienced, and they guided us along several different lines down the wide Hiwassee River, lines I have never done before. We did a lot more ferrying and surfing on Saturday. It was really challenging and a lot of fun. What started out looking like a vacation disaster ended up being a wonderful trip that I will never forget. However, I look forward returning to the calmer waters of Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Coosa River Trail. So until then, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Stephanie Davis, 25, of Pell City, had a perfect run on her first whitewater trip down the Hiwassee River.

it was. On Saturday, the three of us ran the Hiwassee again, but this time with a few members of the Birmingham Canoe Club. On the trip Saturday, we were joined by Susan Herring of Huntsville and Mack Hudson of Mount Olive. They are both open-boaters or whitewater canoeists. Also joining us was kayaker W.M. “Red” Willoughby, who is a teacher with the Hoover school system.

The author splashes through some rapids on the Hiwassee River.

Art by the Water Artist in Motion

Buttons, scraps of paper, vintage fabric, a ‘view from heaven,’ all provide inspiration for Teresa Bussie’s art.

By AZIZA JACKSON Photos by BOB CRISP

M

ixed media artist Teresa Bussie likes to get her hands on anything she possibly can. Whether it is paint, printing, buttons, ribbons, pieces of vintage fabric, old pieces of lace, handmade paper or tissue paper, she looks beyond the materials and sees art in motion. “Everything I do is so experimental,” Bussie said. “I can usually paint over it.” “I just go from there and see what happens as I go along.” Her piece “Nature Fantasy” serves as one example of how several different mediums come together to give her artwork a surreal and unique look. A pink delicate flower, done with Styrofoam printing, peeks out from the art piece that also uses tissue paper and handmade paper. “It’s supposed to be a painting, but you can see the texture of it,” Bussie said. “I tend to always end up with something from nature.” Nature is a recurring theme in her artwork, where blues, greens, turquoises and purples can be seen swirling their way in and out of her pieces. One piece in particular came from a swatch of vintage fabric that Bussie said inspired her. “I just thought ‘this is so beautiful, I have

to do something with that,’” Bussie said. And from that bit of fabric, with a few ribbons here and a couple of buttons there, “Flower Child” was born. Bussie admits that there have been many trials and errors in order to get the final product just right.

“Everything I do is so experimental, I can usually paint over it. I just go from there and see what happens as I go along.” —Teresa Bussie Oftentimes she uses several layering techniques in her artwork. After completing one layer, she lets it dry for about two or three days before starting on another layer. “I think my favorite piece — I don’t even have a name for it yet — but it was fun while I was doing it, watching it coming together.” “It’s one of the first pieces I’ve done that I liked the entire time I did it. I didn’t have to go back and fix it and re-layer it.” Another major part of Bussie’s mixed media work is printmaking, where the printing instrument is painted with a paint roller or ink. September 2011 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

17

Left: Bussie’s untitled piece features a mixture of blue, green, and turquoise paints, and handmade and tissue paper.

Below: Bussie’s “Flower Child” was inspired by a piece of vintage fabric that turned into a piece of art. The piece features assorted buttons, and lace and fabric pieces set within a nature background.

“I incorporate prints into everything I do,” Bussie said. “I work in a lot of printmaking.” But before Bussie found her niche in mixed media and printmaking, she was a student at Jacksonville State University and then got her master’s degree at the University of Montevallo before doing post-grad work at University of Georgia. Bussie said that she did not have formal art training but decided to take an art course while in college, and that changed her life forever. “I was afraid of whether or not I could match up to people who had taken art in high school,” Bussie said. “So in college I took my first art class and got an A and said ‘well, hey, I can do this.’” Before retiring and doing art full time, Bussie was an art teacher in the Talladega County School System for about 20 years. Bussie said her teaching experience made a major impact on her decision to explore mixed media as an artist. “When times were hard, we had to find things to make art,” Bussie said. “Parents would bring in paper, old jewelry, Styrofoam, ribbon, buttons, just anything, and somehow we would find a way to come up with art when we were short on supplies.” Since retiring, Bussie has never stopped 18

learning, whether it’s attending art education workshops around the country or getting together with a few friends for an art retreat on the lake. “I have a lot of friends who are really into art,” Bussie said. She said the retreats around the lake provide a nice change of scenery for her, but she does a lot of her painting at her home on a farm that she describes as “at the foot of Cheaha Mountain.” “We’ve just got a view from heaven,” Bussie said. “When it’s cool enough, I take my easel out and paint — but I haven’t been doing that lately,” she chuckled. After being retired for about five years, Bussie started doing her art professionally, selling her artwork, and taking on commissions. “Now I have more time to do things for me, the way I like to do it,” Bussie said. Bussie’s work can currently be found at ArtScapes in Pell City and at Lmo & Company in Talladega. She hopes to continue learning more about art and redefining the genre of mixed media in her own way, one button at a time. Printmaking has become a major part of Bussie’s art technique. In addition to using other materials to accentuate the art piece, Bussie uses anything from ink to paint to create her patterns and prints.

“R

eady, set, go!” As the third word comes out of her mouth, bathing-suit-clad, 2-and-a-half-year-old Laurel Griebel runs down the dock at her house. The other end is her destination. “Are you ready for a nap yet,” her father, Russ Griebel, asks when she reaches his end. “No!” She says and sets off to play the game again. “Ready, set, go!” 20

The active toddler acquired a love for athletics and the outdoors from her parents. Russ said he often takes his family hiking at Ruffner Mountain. He and Janet, Laurel’s mother, both are avid water skiers. Janet, also an active runner, often runs while pushing Laurel in a stroller. The Griebels have been living in their lakeside home in Pell City for two years. Janet, a Lincoln High School graduate, said she learned to ski on the lake when she was around 8 years old. “We figured since we were going to be on the lake and

Russ and Janet Griebel gave their daughter Laurel swimming lessons when she was just a year and a half old. The tot already this summer has been telling family and friends she’s going to teach them how to ski.

Laurel Griebel, 2-and-a-half years old, learned to ski this summer. She’s nearly mastered the craft, waving to her family on the boat pulling her skis.

that’s what we do, that we wanted to get Laurel used to doing it, too,” she said. “I asked my friends, ‘When did your kids start skiing?’ They said they were 3 or so. I thought, well, let’s just see this summer if we can get her to do it. She wanted to do it because Mommy and Daddy both ski. She thinks she’s a grown up. She loves it.” “Little Miss Independent Laurel,” as her mother says, learned to water ski this summer. She started taking swimming lessons last summer when she was just a year and a half old. “I couldn’t believe she could do it,” Russ said. “The second time, she got it, which we thought was pretty impressive. She’s been watching us, for a couple of years now, ski as much as we can. She knew that she wanted to ski to do what we do. She picked it right up, though we couldn’t believe it. We thought it would be a long weekend of nothing but trying.” The beginner skis that Laurel uses are designed for youngsters learning to balance. Russ and Janet are ecstatic that their daughter has taken on their love for the outdoors. The only problem now, Janet says, is they have to rotate the skiing turns three times instead of two.

The skis Laurel uses are specifically designed for youngsters learning to balance. Janet says next summer they will let Laurel try a set that’s more advanced.

them, but once she’s out on the water by herself, she’s almost mastered the sport. She takes one hand off the rope and waves to her family back on the boat. “She’s determined,” says Janet. “If she wants to do it, she can do it. She’s strong willed and a little stubborn. She likes to do things her way.” Still in the water after the boat comes back to the dock, Laurel says, “I want to do it again.” “You have to climb up and grab my hand remember?” Russ instructs. “I knoooooow,” Laurel replies, stretching out the “o.” The Griebel’s borrowed the beginner skis from a friend. Janet says the next set of skis Laurel will try will come with two separate skis, tied together. “We’re going to try that maybe next year to see if she can get the hang of it,” Janet said. Russ said they were going to let her try the next set “as soon as we can.” When she’s finally on the deck, Laurel decides she wants to keep her life jacket on. A few moments later she becomes concerned when she realizes she doesn’t have on any shoes. She says she doesn’t want to get a splinter. “I need my shoes,” she says. But the thought quickly flees when she spots her grandparents coming to visit by boat. She runs to them as they climb off. “I been skiing!” Laurel exclaims. Now that the water-skiing couple has turned into a water-skiing family, there’s only one problem. “We’re going to have to swap off between three people now,” Janet said. “We have to give her a turn, too.”

Dish It Up! With Lakeside

Two Cooks, One Kitchen

Laura and Lisa dish up a cheesy tomato pie, a scrumptious salad and a sweet, harmless little dessert. By LAURA NATION-ATCHISON Photos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS

elcome to a brand new endeavor for Lakeside Magazine! With this month’s issue, we are embarking upon a mission to entertain, offer some of the best “eats” we can find and introduce you to some of the best cooks around, lots of friends and the things that happen when friends, usually myself and one Lisa Baggett, get together in the kitchen. 26

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2011

It all got started when I was teasing her about her addiction to The Food Network. Name a day when I drop by, and there she is, watching unending episodes of cooking with this one and that one. But, the fact remains, Lisa is one darn good cook, and a discerning one, as well, as far as her ingredients go. This is where we differ. For her, there’s no cutting corners when it comes to ingredients. I call her a “snob shopper.” Me, I like a “deal” on my groceries and tend to be a bargain

A tomato pie makes a wonderful brunch, lunch or dinner dish. Besides being delicious, total prep time is about 20 minutes and only about 25 minutes in the oven.

shopper when I know there’s no difference in the end result as far as taste. And she doesn’t like changing out ingredients whenever possible to transform a once-fatty and high-calorie dish into one that won’t have your doctor prescribing Lipitor or a crash diet. Call her a purist, and me, a realist I suppose, who’s always looking for a way to make good food healthy as well. This is where these get-togethers are going to get interesting, folks. We bicker and argue, and she always wins out. Why? Because truly, she is the better cook;

I know it and cave to her whims. Make that demands. I however, will hold out on my principles and slip in my lower-fat, lowercalorie options whenever I can. With summer reaching its end and along with it, access to those wonderful home-grown, vine-ripened tomatoes, it seemed only natural to choose a main dish that makes good use of these treasured fruits. This dish, Lisa’s Luscious Tomato Pie, is an altered version of a recipe she, of course, ran across in her unending love affair with The Food Network.

I would supply the salad, choosing a batch of mixed summer greens and a Greek vinaigrette dressing with what else? Sliced tomatoes. The dessert was my choice as well, and being one who really thinks none of us needs dessert, I chose one I felt would register very low on the calories and fat barometer. Even so, it was really simple, and one our guests said was unbelievably deceptive in its low-cal reality. I got a good brand of low-fat frozen vanilla yogurt, scooped it onto a plate, added sliced fresh peaches, drizzled it with dark brown sugar and added a sprig of fresh mint. Voila! The perfect pretty, harmless, palate-pleasing concoction to end a meal that’s a little on the spicy side. Do I even need to tell you the beverage of choice? Sweet iced tea served with sliced lemon wedges and mint leaves. So, let’s get on to the guest list, the luscious tomato pie and our very first venture into the kitchen for Lakeside. It was a given that we rounded up June Winters. She’s been the mainstay of The Daily Home’s food pages for ages as well as the “go-to” person for the newspaper’s yearly Holiday Cookbook since its inception. This took some guts. June is well known for her own kitchen creations, and we were really sticking our necks out. June knows food and definitely knows the good from the bad. But we wanted a true expert on board to make sure we were passing along a recipe you’ll want to add to your own collection.

Lowfat frozen yogurt, fresh sliced peaches and a topping of dark brown sugar make a refreshing and low calorie dessert.

She may not have come right out and said “Oh, girls, this isn’t too good,” but I know her well enough to know I could tell if it didn’t quite fly. We asked June to choose a guest to bring along, and she brought her delightful cousin, Linda Hatchett, another who loves cooking good food and spending time with friends. taining for family and friends, rounded out our first test panel. We decided on a colorful table setting of purple stoneware and crystal goblets placed against a table runner of Moroccan influence with bright hues and crystal beading. I got the job of creating a centerpiece and — look out, here comes my habit of thriftiness — but not compromising the end result. I grabbed some magenta crape myrtles out of the yard, keeping the stems long, clipped some hydrangeas from the front of our house and splurged on $6 worth of miniature sunflowers from the local grocery. Lisa had the perfect oversized vase. I stuffed the taller flowers — the crape myrtle — into the center, surrounded them with hydrangeas and poked the sunflowers in wherever they seemed to look good. (I did get a few raves for the arrangement, not bragging, but happy it turned out the way it did.) And so did the tomato pie. Everyone

Our first group of “taste testers,” from left, are Lynn Batemon, June Winters, Linda Hatchett and Caran Wilbanks. The group gave Lisa Baggett’s Luscious Tomato Pie a rating of “10.”

loved it from the very first bite and had plenty of questions for the way Lisa put it all together. She doesn’t mind a bit telling it’s really easy, and about 30 to 45 minutes from start to finish. Start with three to four of your favorite tomatoes, sliced about a quarter-inch thick. Lisa put the sliced tomatoes on paper towels, sprinkled lightly with salt, covered with paper towels to draw out moisture to prevent them from becoming soggy. The recipe calls for a cup of mayonnaise. Lisa recommends full strength

Hellman’s; I, on the other hand, would use fat-free. We both love Royal sausage, a Pell City product from Curtis Capps’ company. However, for people with cholesterol concerns, like me, you can use precooked turkey sausage crumbles available at most grocery stores. The complete recipe is there, on the right. Look forward next month to Lisa’s Greek turkey breast, seasoned with butter and lemon and a touch of Greek spices, along with grilled asparagus and melon salad!

hen Terre Robinson opens her front door, get ready for adventure, some great stories and traveling with her to interesting places all over the world. But first, when you arrive at the rambling twolevel home she and her husband, Robbie, have shared for 17 years, you have to take in the setting of masses of old-growth azaleas and bunches of fluffy ferns nestled along walkways and planted in large wandering beds. Poufs of broadleaf hydrangeas are nestled here and there, and playful sculptures of squirrels 34

and other creatures are placed in strategic spots, along with seating to take in the quiet beauty of the Cedar Cove Drive retreat. Terre greets guests with a smile and a twinkle in her eye that hint of the fun you’ll find inside her home, a home filled with the things she loves, one-of-a-kind “finds” from near and far and everywhere in between. She’s an artist, a writer, a collector of beautiful things, and one who describes herself as preferring an eclectic style for her lakeside home.

Terre Robinson has loved living on Logan Martin Lake for 17 years. She and her husband Robbie have added new space and redesigned parts of their house through the years.

For Terre, there’s beauty in natural creations on their own as well as what can be made from these things by a pair of talented hands. A winding brick sidewalk leads to the front entry, which opens into the massive great room with its 25-foot vaulted ceilings and walls of windows overlooking Logan Martin Lake. In the entry stands one of Terre’s carved grandfather clocks she picked up while the couple lived in Germany. Her husband served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, and the Robinsons relo-

cated 11 times during those years. The walls in the great room are cedar, along with the stout exposed beams on the ceilings. There’s a stacked-stone fireplace in the room, one of the changes the Robinsons made when they bought the house. The stone extends to the exterior of the front of the house. Rich fabrics and colors combine in the room to create a warm ambience. Stout armchairs covered in gold and burgundy brocade are arranged around an oversized couch with scrolls of September 2011 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

sage and olive. Plump pillows and cushions beckon guests to relax and unwind, enjoy the view and listen to Terre’s stories. A large tapestry hangs on one wall, with bright flowers in coral, red and white against a black background and a gold

border. A broad, square glass-topped table is edged with beige tile, its base decorative scrolled metal. This is where one of Terre’s very favorite things is placed, a planter in the shape of a horse, neck arched and head

held high. Underneath the table is a room-size Oriental rug with designs in gold and light green against a coral background. Antique chests and tables in the room, many of them etched with floral and Asian accents, hold some of Terre’s collection of one-of-a-kind lamps. Some have scrolled metal bases, while others are done in urn-like shapes in ceramic and other materials. “I collect lamps, and I only have one pair of matching lamps in this entire house,” she tells. In a corner is another of Terre’s interesting finds, a baby grand piano once used in a Washington, D.C., night club. “I can just imagine the things that went on around this piano,” Terre says. The great room is open to a dining area adjacent to the kitchen, where a carved table is surrounded with six tapestry-upholstered chairs made with scrolled wood edging. Another Oriental rug in deep earth tones lies underneath the table. Floors in the kitchen and dining

The tiki bar is another favorite spot in the Robinsons’ home.

areas are herringbone maize-colored pavers, original to the house. The Robinsons updated the galley kitchen, adding Italian tile on top of the counters, which include bar seating. On the bar is one of Terre’s soapstone bowls made by artist Russell Everett, this one deep enough to hold pens and other needs. “I love his work, I have several of these pieces,” Terre said. On a wall by the bar hangs a painting of a whimsical cat wearing a beret, one of Terre’s own paintings. At the far end of the kitchen, the Robinsons placed a patterned glass window, and there’s room for a bar stool there, too. Just around the corner is the formal dining room, which features an intricately carved buffet along with a rectangular table for six. Six antique five-rung ladder-back chairs with their original rush seats are used with the dining table, and they have a story, too. Terre and Robbie came across the set while out on one of their frequent antiquing missions. Terre wanted just one of the chairs, but the dealer would have none of it and told her it was “all six, or nothing.” Terre being Terre, and liking what she likes, took the opportunity to claim all six and at just $25 each. “I bet he wishes he had them back now,” she says. On one wall hangs a painting of an angel, another of Terre’s, done in a loose Impressionistic style in shades of gold and spots of mauve. 40

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2011

Terre says that in 1979, while living in Germany, she started working with an artist who insisted students learn to perfectly reproduce certain paintings from great artists. She worked on some Raphael paintings from the Sistine Chapel, along with some Picasso paintings. She points to a Picasso reproduction she did, and said the process took so long, the one piece took three to four months to finish. Terre put away her paints around 1981, but started back about a year ago. One of the most “fun” spots in the house, though there are many, is the tiki bar created by the home’s original owner, Jim Richards. When Richards built his original “cabin” in Cedar Cove on the Talladega side of the lake in 1966, it originally had three bedrooms and two baths. The master bedroom was where the formal dining room is now, and the tiki bar was added after Richards added a master bedroom suite at the other end of the house. In the center of the room is another of Terre’s favorite “finds,” but it was her husband who found it while stationed in Vietnam. The hand-carved round table is topped with glass, and its legs curve gracefully down and inward. Terre loved the piece so much she tracked down the artist in Taiwan and asked for more pieces, having them shipped to her from the creator himself. She now has a desk, a silver chest and a coffee table from the wood artist.

The Robinsons’ home has lots of special spaces; the sunroom is one the couple especially enjoys, along with their 21-year-old cat, Patches.

“I fell in love with it,” she said. “So I found the guy and told him I had one of his tables and I wanted more,” she said. Behind the bar hangs a large oval mirror set in a deep frame, and rows of shelving hold an extensive collection stemware and other glassware. On one wall are framed album covers from the Robinsons’ record collection through the years. There are The Beatles and Kiss, The Mamas and The Papas, Elvis and Barbara Streisand and everyone in between. Another addition to the house the Robinsons made was an airy sunroom that opens from the dining area. “We really love this room,” Terre says, pointing to the broad view of the water through the walls of windows. The furnishings are in soft shades of gold and sage, with two large upholstered armchairs and ottomans arranged with an olive velvet-covered plush couch with brocade cushions fringed in gold. An antique two-drawer chest is topped with a leopard-print scarf, along with a lamp topped with a fluted shade. There’s a life-size statue of a raging panther perched on an antique bench, and just below it, a sculpture of a Zeus-like fellow staring out at those who visit the room. From the sunroom, there’s entry to a huge deck that stretches across the rear of the house. Potted plants dot the deck, and there’s room for two large glass-topped tables and shading umbrellas for friends and family to relax and have a front-row seat to happenings on the lake. Stairs from the deck lead to a pebbled walkway to the Robinsons’ boat house and large lakeside deck. 42

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2011

Stacks of water toys await the grandchildren’s visits when the Robinsons take out their ski boat. There’s a “beach,” too, where lucky grandchildren might find some shells and starfish placed there just for fun. Old-growth oaks shade the grounds, and there’s a huge magnolia just off the back deck that offers its scent to visitors when it’s in bloom. Back on the main level, the master bedroom and bath are at the other end of the house from the great room and dining room, with wall-size windows offering a panoramic lake view. The king-size, four-poster bed is of walnut, layered with a floral spread over white chenille and a tapestry-like quilt in shades of moss, gold and rose. Stacks of plump pillows in matching shades line the headboard, and what’s called a Prado chair with a cane seat is placed in a corner. The Prado chair was designed for women in centuries past to have prayer, fitted with an armrest and a place to put their knees while wearing the bulky dresses of previous eras. This piece was found while the Robinsons lived in New Jersey. At the front of the house on the other end are two guest rooms, one used as an office. The office is filled with family photographs, as are many other spaces in the house, and has space for doing computer work and other business. There’s a framed print of George Washington aboard a stunning white horse, and Terre pulls out another interesting print, done in the very same style, not hung but waiting for its place, of Gen. Robert E. Lee aboard his horse, Traveler.

greens and golds. Lacy ferns and potted plants give the room an elegant, but outdoorsy feel. The room opens to the covered patio underneath the upstairs deck. Blooming white crape myrtles surround the porch and grounds leading to the water. For Terre, there so are many ways of expressing the love of the place she and her husband have called home for close to 20 years. The Robinsons met when Terre was 14 and Robbie was 15. They were married in 1968 and have two children, Kimberly and Jarrod, and there are six grandchildren who visit and love the lake as well. “As spring arrives, the views of the azaleas and the lake are so breathtaking,” she says. “In the fall, there are the sailboats racing around the island, and that’s an amazing sight. “But year-round, the moon casts its light across the water in the evenings, and for us, the world always seems better than it might otherwise be, at this wonderful home that was once just a little cabin out on the lake.”

There’s an old mounted fish hanging on the wall, a big bass caught by Terre’s mother-in-law’s best friend on Lake Guntersville. “The bass is probably 90 years old,” Terre says. “They both loved to fish and fished together all the time.” Her mother-in-law’s friend gave the trophy to Terre. The guest room on this level of the house holds a special treasure with a story all its own. Terre and Robbie were out driving around the countryside while stationed in New Jersey and came across a sign by the side of the road reading, “Rabbits for sale” in big letters, and scratched underneath, “and antiques.” Terre’s antenna for finding treasures in unexpected places kicked in, and off they went to the shop. Once there, they discovered a gigantic old barn overflowing with antiques. They found a cannon ball-style twin bed they had to have, and upon more searching, a matching twin bed, chickens roosting on it, and bought the pair. Because the beds tended to “give” when standing on their own, Terre and Robbie found a way to attach them together, creating a beautiful king-size bed complete with its own story to tell. “These beds date to the 1700s, Terre says. There are a few imperfections in them; one bed is about a quarter inch “off ” from the other. To reach the lower level of the house, there’s a tiny spiral staircase the Robinsons added, doing away with the need to go outside to reach the downstairs. The nook that holds the stairway is just off the formal dining room, and its walls are filled with family photographs to take in while journeying downstairs. The large guest room downstairs is furnished with a kingsize bed covered in layers of soft spreads and comforters in light

Burgers Like You’ve Never Tasted Napp’s Café in Riverside puts a new twist on the old standard. By CHRIS NORWOOD Photos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS

ee Stockdale and Deborah Dark, owners of Napp’s Café in Riverside, may be just getting started, but they have already made some fair innovations in the world of burgers, in particular. “We’ve been open not quite two months, so we’re still pretty much fresh out of the gate,” Stockdale explained in midAugust. Stockdale said he retired from General Motors and worked as a dee-jay before getting into the restaurant business. “I had business experience, but not in the restaurant business. My partner brought that to the table.” Dark’s experience is actually fairly extensive. She says her first job was at Joe’s Café across from the Pell City Steak House, and she worked at Sammy’s Touch & Go as well. Then she spent two or three years at Mama D’s in Tennessee before returning to Alabama to work at her brother’s place in Lincoln. Napp’s Café is actually named for her father. 48

The menu is still growing, but Dark and Stockdale already have established their two trademark burgers. The first is the Big Baby, which adds corned beef, lettuce, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing to a burger served on an onion roll. The second is the Nappy Burger itself, which is topped with green peppers, onions, bacon, Swiss cheese, cheddar cheese and a tangy sauce. “That’s the house special,” Dark says proudly. The menu also includes French fries, chicken wings and, coming soon, fried chicken and loaded baked potatoes. They are also adding options for the two-piece and eightpiece diners daily. Sides include cabbage, squash casserole, green beans, collard greens, fried corn, pinto beans and cornbread. The available sides also change daily. Dessert options include cakes, banana pudding and fried pies. A dinner special with a meat and two vegetables plus dessert will set you back $5.99, she added. Dark added that she also plans to branch out into cater-

etween them, Logan Martin and Neely Henry lakes have more than 600 miles of shoreline. The job of Alabama Power’s Shoreline Patrol division in Ragland is to oversee all of those miles. “Our main goal is to run the shoreline and make sure the Alabama Power property rights are protected,” said Dennis Trammell, real estate specialist. “A permitting program is the way we do all of that.” Trammell said Alabama Power Co. owns an “easement right” to flood above the full-pool mark of 465 feet on Logan Martin. The easement or full-flood mark ranges anywhere from 473 feet to 489 feet, depending on location. For instance, full pool around Pell City’s sports complex is 54

well clear of the largest baseball field (denoted by the blue line on the aerial view). But the easement, where full flood reaches, comes to the outer edge of the outfield and could even reach the infield (denoted by red and yellow lines). The 15,270 acres of water coverage in Logan Martin is surrounded by an additional 8,931 acres of easement. The company has to maintain all construction within it according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission regulations. “All we have there is flood rights. But we still want to know what people are doing in that area, because we have the right to flood,” Trammell said. “Anything that would affect our ability to flood, you can’t do. We don’t want people building a house in that area. “Also, anything you build — a gazebo, a driveway, a boat ramp — that comes through that easement, we want to put that

on a permit.” Trammell said floods depend on rainfall, and Logan Martin had gone for years without flooding until around two years ago, he said. “It has been several years since we used the full amount of storage capacity, but it does happen,” he said. The shoreline patrol, made up of Trammell and three independent contractors, keep watch of the shoreline by land and water. Trammell said they survey the area by boat to look for new construction. By vehicle, they visit dozens of campgrounds and other areas along the water, making sure work is permitted and within regulation. Campgrounds and other businesses are also required to get commercial permits for structures. “The majority of people do try to work with us, get along and do like they are supposed to,” Trammell said. “You still have a few that don’t, and a few that don’t know. But the majority knows and tries to do what they are asked. If you are just going to replace one or two boards that are rotten (along a dock), then we are not going to do a permit. But if you are going to replace all the top boards, walking boards or are extending the blueprint, we want to know about it and do a permit. That way we know what’s going on.” The permits cover structures such as decks, porches and covers for housing, including mobile homes and recreational vehicles. It also covers docks and boathouses, which are allowed a maximum of 1,220 square feet combined. 56

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2011

But as Trammell pointed out, some people do try to get around permits using “creative” ways. One spot had three pontoon boats that appeared to be makeshift docks. Two of the pontoons did not have a motor attached. “They have got them pulled up to the bank and tied up that they are using for piers,” Trammell said. “They can’t have a permanent one right now, because they are waiting on the (campground’s) permit. “They are very resourceful.” The permits were first instituted in the early 1990s, Trammell said. He showed examples of several structures that were built prior to that time that did not fall under regulation. In those circumstances, the company does not require any changes to be made, unless the owner begins to renovate them. He said closed boathouses and covers were not allowed anymore, and structures were required to be secured. He said the reason for that was, if and when flooding occurred, they would not be washed back into the lake. “It does make the lake look better aesthetically to have some requirements,” said Alyson Fuqua, public relations for Alabama Power. “Changes in anything people don’t necessarily like… But at the end of the day, normally they are done to protect everyone to ensure long-term property values.” Trammell said the permit process usually takes seven to 10 days to complete for residential properties. Lakeside Agent Spotlight

Nancy Sells the Lake It’s what Nancy Locklar does and what she loves. By ELSIE HODNETT Nancy Locklar

T

he sold her parents’ house “For Sale by Owner,” and found her calling. “I loved it,” said Nancy Locklar, owner of Realty Executives Complete. “I decided to get my Realtor’s license.” Locklar, who has been a Realtor for 12 years, began selling real estate in the Lake Eufaula area with a local real estate company. “I moved here six years ago, and started with RE/ MAX,” she said. “I was in Homewood and Lincoln.” Locklar said financially it made sense to take the next step and open up her own company. Realty Executives Complete in Pell City opened in April 2010. “I’ve owned restaurants in the past, so I wasn’t afraid of owning another business,” she said. Locklar said Realty Executives Complete started with three employees and has grown to eight. “I have agents who sell in five counties — St. Clair, Talladega, Shelby, Calhoun and Etowah,” she said. Locklar said she primarily sells in St. Clair and Talladega counties and the Anniston-Oxford area. “Being a lake expert is what I geared myself toward when I got here,” she said. “I felt Logan Martin Lake wasn’t getting the exposure it needed. I decided to pro-

mote the lake, and in turn it would promote my business.” Locklar said her slogan, “Nancy Sells the Lake,” is quite accurate; she sells property on Logan Martin, Neely Henry and Lay lakes. “I don’t just sell the lake, and I’m getting into commercial sales as well,” she said. “But I really enjoy selling on the lake.” Locklar said she loves the negotiations and putting deals together. “Every lake house is individual,” she said. “You can almost see the fun people have had in them. And it’s very therapeutic — the lake is calming. You can feel the fun, family and togetherness when you look at a lake home.”

“Being a lake expert is what I geared myself toward when I got here. I felt Logan Martin Lake wasn’t getting the exposure it needed I decided to promote the lake, and in turn it would promote my business.” —Nancy Locklar 64
