“The emotion is terrible,” said Peggy. “I was sitting on the edge of the bed this morning. I looked down the hallway and found myself waiting, as if Kelly might walk in.” No matter how hard her mother wished, Kelly did not appear before her. Kelly’s disappearance is a mystery to most everyone. Law enforcement officials say the investigation is continuing. Gov. Bob Riley issued a proclamation for a $5,000 reward for information on her disappearance and a family friend matched the amount, making the total $10,000. The Henderson family, along with Kelly’s husband and son, hope the money will prompt someone with information to come forth. On Saturday, Sept. 25, about 80 people took part in a search party, organized by Traci and family friend. The volunteers met at the Dollar General in Riverside, located beside Family Dentistry. “We do not know exactly why, but the search and rescue people from Walker County volunteered to conduct the search,” said Robin. “There was also a police car from Talladega County and Sylacauga there. We appreciate them and all the friends and family members who came.” The search was cut short due to afternoon thunderstorms, but officials told the family they would come back. Also searching with the volunteers were

members of the Henderson family, including Peggy. “We got out there with the beggar’s lice, the bees and the ants,” she said. She smiled and then her eyes drifted outside the window as she thought about what they might have found. Her face reddened. Robin’s head dropped downward. “Some people said they couldn’t do what we did,” she said, “but we felt we had to.” In addition to searching and hoping, the family has paid to have flyers printed, met with television crews and reporters, and placed the flyers into stores and other public places. They are especially appreciative of the truck drivers who have helped them carry flyers throughout the United States. “Some of them get tears in their eyes when we ask them to help us,” said Robin. “So many truck drivers have told us they have seen Kelly’s picture on flyers in faraway places. We know people out there are helping us, and it means a lot.” In addition to their efforts, the family members are trying hard to control their emotions. They rely on each other and on their faith in God. “Sometimes I get angry,” said Robin. “I call mother and let it out. Mom lis-

She said she can barely tolerate the emptiness and expectation she carries in her heart. “I have to accept that there is no good way to describe this much emotional pain,” she said, as she wiped more tears away. “I just do not want anyone else to ever feel this pain.” The Henderson family is doing one other thing they consider of utmost

importance. They are saving all of the papers and articles about Kelly’s disappearance. If she returns, they want to be able to show her how much she was loved. And, if she never physically sees the papers, the family wants to be able to show Kelly’s grandson how much she was loved. Sherry Kughn is a freelance writer in Anniston.
