tant. During their first year, the staff helped 35 students sent to them by the court, and they are filling up their classrooms again this year. (The program runs year-round.) Partners that assist in the program include the Juvenile Probation Officers and Calhoun/Cleburne Mental Health Center Therapist, Alleda Glass, who provides counseling for the students. “There was a new juvenile justice bill passed a few years ago, “said Mackey. “The legislature mandated that kids should have a program that keeps them in their communities and their homes. The Success Academy is one way Calhoun County’s doing that.” Amerson said a federal government study conducted a few years ago showed the average young person choosing a life of crime would cost $1 million each to provide their upkeep in their lifetime. He said programs like Success Academy provide the opportunity to persuade kids to choose a positive way of life and help them become productive citizens. People who work with them demonstrate that they really care and often this is the key to the success of a special project and Success Academy has proved it’s off to a good start in the right direction. Success Academy Volunteers Needed Any good program needs Volunteers. One in particular made a difference in keeping the first class of Success Academy students motivated. Volunteer and local filmmaker, Annie Brunson, spent more than 100 hours teaching students how to write and produce a film. All aspects of the students’ studies were incorporated into the film project. She helped the male students produce a five minute film about bullying in schools,
and she helped the female students produce a four minute thriller film. Both films were entered in the Birmingham based Sidewalk Film Festival, Sept. 25-27. Volunteers at both Success Academy and Family Links are needed to help sit for young children during parent classes and to help tutor students. Call 256-820-5911, if interested.
