I Feel Like Traveling On Lineville resident drives for ministry, writes safety manual By Sherry Kughn The Star Marketing Department
For 17 years and a million miles, Lineville resident Ralph Moore drove a tour coach bus for the well-known singing group, The LeFevres. For years afterwards, he drove buses for passengers who booked tours with his company, The Christian Travel Club, and he has also driven for stars such as Lionel Richie and The Beach Boys. Moore has spent many hours during his career observing other drivers, including their sloppy habits and dangerous ways. Several years ago, he decided to write down tips, not only for professional drivers but also for all drivers. That manual will be released soon by Pana Print of Macon, Ga. The book is called Improve Driving Skills with Natural Learning: Valuable Driving Tips for Beginners and Professionals, a Comprehensive Driver’s Manual. That is a long title, but Moore shortens it in conversation to Valuable Driving Tips. In the book’s forward, Moore states that its contents “have been compiled from many years
of coast to coast driving experiences,” and he added that he has also driving to Canada many times. The “years” he refers to are the more than four decades of his own experience and the years of driving experience of the man the book is dedicated to, the late Paul Hughes of Atlanta. He was Moore’s mentor in 1962 when Moore began working for The LeFevres, first as a soundman, and a year later, as a driver. Both men were drawn to driving by way of their love for gospel music. “Now I can’t get away from driving,” Moore said. “A couple of years ago, I left retirement to drive for the gospel group, Hope’s Journey.” Valuable Driving Tips has attracted attention throughout the nation. Moore sent a copy of the book manuscript to Norm Littler, head of the Safety Council in Washington, D.C., who is also the vice president of Regulatory and Industry Affairs and executive director of the Bus Industry Safety Council and the American Bus Association. Littler told the Bus Ride magazine to contact Moore for a story about his forthcoming book. They ran

a piece about the forthcoming book in 2008. Also, Littler is interested in recommending the manual for licensing purposes for tour-coach drivers. Moore sent copies of the manuscript to transportation officials in Alabama and Mississippi. Both states responded favorably to recommending and/or distributing the manual, especially to young drivers. Alabama officials
recently asked Moore to include information about Driving Under the Influence. In fact, he has added a test that will be used in a program that educates those charged with DUI. “I was excited to death about it,” said. Moore. “Drivers absolutely need this. During all of my years of hearing speakers at the gospel concerts, I’d hear people asking for prayer for young people

THE CRIME BULLETIN Driving Tips cont. getting killed in car wrecks. That tears at my heart.” Moore has another plan: “Hope’s Journey” members plan to recommend his book at their concerts, and Moore plans to market it to home schoolers and private and Christian schools, where no driver’s education courses are usually available. Of course, the book has a special section for those driving motor coaches. Moore said many tourism companies are suffering financially because passengers have become frightened at the dangerous driving habits of the drivers. “Many drivers are self taught and they have no idea how to drive the motor coach, which is the Cadillac of the highway,” said Moore. “Often, I sat out in parking lots and watched drivers pull out in a wreck-less manner. Nowadays, drivers load up their passengers and practically sling them all over the place.” Moore’s passion for driving and for educating other drivers began long ago. He described in his 2008 autobiography, Still Small Voice, how, in 1952, he was in his yard in Lineville and felt God was calling him to work in the field of gospel entertainment, no matter that he couldn’t sing. In 1962, when he went looking for work, he called The LeFevres’ famous matriarch, Eva Mae LeFevre, to ask her about a job. She recommended the job in sound and later recommended Moore to replace Hughes, who was leaving their group to drive for another famous gospel group, the Happy Goodman Family. In Valuable Driving Tips, Moore adds anecdotes about driving experiences of his own. He tells the story of a driver who was so bad that the passengers in a tour coach did not want to sit in the front seats because they got too nervous. Moore adds that any vehicle carrying passengers, including vans, buses, and limousines should drive with the riders in mind. Sherry Kughn is a freelance writer and

Here are a few tips on motor coach driving that Moore shares: • Allow the vehicle 10 seconds before taking off to allow the its computers time to reset. • “Operate the coach gracefully,” states Moore, to ensure one’s job. • Looks matter. Passengers want a clean vehicle and a professional-looking driver. • Coaches are not built to take off fast, but they are built to deliver a comfortable ride. In his book, Moore also lists the typical advice drivers receive often, such as do not talk on the cell phone, do not apply makeup while driving, and do not text message. Also, he shares tips throughout the book that readers may not know: • Experience counts in young drivers. Moore states that youths raised on farms make excellent drivers, as they had to earn their privileges to drive farm equipment. • Over-acceleration can cause wear and tear on the engine, transmission, and tires. • Over-eager parents forget youths are not experienced drivers. And, often when youths wreck their first car, they are “rewarded” by receiving a newer car. • When driving on less-than-perfect roads, cut the speed of the vehicle by at least 10 mph for a smoother ride. • Drivers should cut their speed by 5-10 mph when driving at night. • When missing turns, avoid split-second decisions. Staying calm and proceeding to convenient areas to turn might eliminate an accident. Valuable Driving Tips can be purchased soon online at valuabledrivingtips.com.
