Give, but give carefully Avoid scammers during the Christmas season By Sherry Kughn The Star Marketing Department

In the 166th episode of Seinfeld, George Costanza scammed his boss by sending him a letter stating he had written donations in his honor to The Human Fund, a non-existent charity. George’s plan backfired when his boss decided to also donate to The Human Fund and his sizeable check came back. The holiday season is a time when many people decide to give of their bounty by helping the less fortunate through charitable giving. The practice is noble, but some innocent givers may not realize the degree that scammers may try to dupe them. Scammers might “borrow” the names of reputable charities to obtain money. Scammers might collect funds directly from givers and pocket the money. Scammers might concoct elaborate seminars to teach others how to give money to charities by placing their money in what may not be safe places. Sgt. Jon Garlic of the Cal-

houn County Sheriff’s Office said his rule of thumb was not to give to charities that solicit funds by telephone. “There’s always the risk that that you are not pledging money to who you think you are,” he said. “Give to charities that you are familiar with.” On a local basis, one safe way to give is to give to charities that are members of the United Way. Wise Giving Alliance In 2001, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) created the BBB Wise Giving Alliance to help those wishing to give of their means to help others. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance does not try to rank charities according to their effectiveness, but instead, it tries to help people feel assured their money will be used to its fullest potential when helping others. Visit the BBB’s website at www.bbb.org/us/charity. Here are some of the ways that givers might use the BBB’s website features: • Click on “Check Out a Business or Charity” to enter in a charity’s name, city, state and postal code. The information that is shown gives the location of the charity’s headquarters, the website, and tells its purpose and year of incorporation. • Givers may learn even more about a charity by clicking on “Ask the BBB to Develop a Report for the Charity.” • Click on “Inquire About a Charity” to express any doubts about the validity of a charity. • Click on “File a Complaint” to forward any evidence against a particular charity. • Click on “Charity Reports and Standards” to read the “Standards for Charitable Accountability.” • Click on “BBB Accredited Charity Directory” to obtain a list of all charities that have maintain the standards for charitable accountability.
