MOUNDVILLE — The museum at the Moundville Archaeological Park has reopened after a two-year, $5 million renovation that gives the attraction a new focus. “The old museum was centered around artifacts, but now we’re trying to teach what we believe the Native Americans believed in themselves,” museum employee Darrell Smith said at the event Saturday. The museum reopened with dancing, music and crafts celebrating the people who lived among the 26 mounds along the Black Warrior River from about 1000 to 1450 A.D. Originally known as Mound State Park, the attraction started in 1939. The University of Alabama Museums, which oversees the Jones Archaeological Museum, began planning a redesign of the museum a decade ago. The program’s executive director, Robert Clouse, said Moundville offers a rare look into the lives of upper-class Native Americans. The museum’s main hall shows what a Native American wedding ceremony would have looked like in Moundville. The other two wings explore the dwelling of the tribe’s sacred ruler and the tribe’s belief in the afterlife. “One of the things that makes Moundville unique is the high status of the people who occupied the tops of these mounds here,” Clouse told The Tuscaloosa News. “We have an incredible amount of high-status material wealth found here that is very rare in other archaeological sites.”
