A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts. The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:

Restaurant Ratings Here are food service establishments recently inspected by the Calhoun County Health Department, along with scores. A score of 100 indicates the inspector found no deficiencies. Potentially hazardous deficiencies (four- or five-point demerit items) are noted. These must be corrected immediately and inspectors say they are often corrected while the inspection is underway. Restaurants earning below 70 must raise their scores within seven days or face closure.

Continued from Page 1A black tank that some call a “submarine” and others call a “torpedo” due to its shape: hemispherical at each end, tubular down the middle. The shape should be familiar to many old country dwellers: It’s an old LP gas tank transformed into a giant grill thanks to a collaboration earlier this year between Smith and his welder friend Jason Alford, who has a shop in Gadsden. In use since April, Smith’s custom-made grill is 11 feet in circumference, better than 8 feet long and boasts a 6-by-3-foot cooking space inside, not counting shelves good for toasting buns or keeping meat warm. The bottom of the tank holds plenty of charcoal, and there’s a fire box to hold wood used for smoking meat, and various adjustable openings control heat and air flow. The grill’s main doors aren’t the same metal that forms the rest of the tank — they’re a little thinner. “If you had the same thickness for the doors, you would have arms like Popeye’s,” Smith said. The grill is permanently attached to a small trailer Smith can pull over the road to wherever he needs to go. “They did everything, they painted my trailer, painted my tank,” he said. Smith said he can cook up to 30 10-pound butts at a time, or 48 boneless chicken breasts or 65 hamburger patties. That meat, by the way, is provided by whoever
hires out Smith’s services — but he provides everything else, from his own 20-spice meat rub and “Johnny Fleeman” brand marinade to the conversation he enjoys with his hosts and their guests. His favorite moment is when they sample his work. “They eat some cooked meat and just smile.” Readers who know of interesting jobs — or ordinary jobs that involve more than meets the eye — are invited to email bedwards@annistonstar.com for a possible write-up in “Off to Work.”
