BANKRUPTCIES

Sophena Williams Anderson, Jacksonville Wanda Young Belcher, Roanoke Janet Sue Boozer, Heflin Bennie Lawrence Burt, Anniston

A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts. The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:

Rep. Hurst: Change of party allegiance is being discussed Associated Press

MONTGOMERY — Alabama newspapers report that as many as four Democrats in the state House are expected to announce today that they are switching to the Republican Party. However, at least one of those potential switchers, Steve Hurst of Munford, is suggesting that for him, at least, it’s not quite a done deal. Hurst told The Associated Press Sunday that he had not decided if he would switch parties, but acknowledged that he was “discussing it.” “I’m trying to put together what would be best for the people that I represent,” said Hurst, a former Talladega County commissioner whose district includes parts of Talladega and Calhoun counties. He said he has always tried to approach his legislative duties in “a nonpartisan manner.” Victories across the state in the Nov. 2 general elections gave Republicans a 62-43 margin in the House. The addition of four legislators would give Republicans 66 votes, three more than the 63 needed to stop a filibuster or a procedural vote needed to bring most legislation up for a vote. Republicans hold 22 seats in the state Senate, which is also enough to win votes without help from Democrats. Reports in the Montgomery Adver-

tiser and The Tuscaloosa News said Democratic lawmakers expected to switch include Rep. Alan Boothe of Troy, Rep. Mike Millican of Hamilton, Rep. Lesley Vance of Phenix City and Rep. Steve Hurst of Munford. House Republican leader and designee to be speaker, Mike Hubbard of Auburn, said the House Republican Caucus would hold a news conference this morning at 10 to make an announcement. Hubbard would not confirm that lawmakers would be switching parties, but said House Republicans had been talking to “like-minded” Democrats for some time. Millican told The Tuscaloosa News “the reason I’m switching is as plain as day.” “The people of Alabama spoke Nov. 2 and not only did the people of the state but the people of my district spoke with authority,” said Millican, who represents Marion and Winston counties in northwest Alabama. Boothe told the Advertiser he had not made up his mind. “I want to do what I think can help the people of my district the most. All doors are open,” said Boothe, who represents Dale and Pike counties in southeast Alabama. Vance, who represents Lee and Russell Counties in east Alabama, told The Tuscaloosa News he would not comment until today.

Woman killed in multi-car I-80 accident Lanes closed for 10 hours Associated Press TUSKEGEE — An accident involving as many as six vehicles closed the northbound lanes of a busy interstate highway between Montgomery and Atlanta for almost 10 hours and claimed the life of a 52-year-old Valley woman. State troopers said Alice Marie, a rear passenger in one of the vehicles, was killed in the accident at about 5:40 a.m. Sunday. Troopers say the incident involved a series of accidents that started with a single vehicle crash. The most serious of the accidents occurred within an 18wheeler crashed into the rear of a Kia Sorento, killing Marie and seriously injuring the driver of the Kia, 65-yearold Henry Lee Davis of Valley. The front passenger in the Kia, 54year-old Barbara Summers of Valley was also injured. Davis and Summers were taken to a Montgomery area hospital. Other injuries in the accident were minor, troopers said. The southbound side of the highway was closed briefly, but the northbound lanes were shutdown until about 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Traffic was rerouted onto U.S. 80.
