Parini’s Melville novel is provocative The Passages of H. M.: A Novel of Herman Melville by Jay Parini; Doubleday, 2010; 464 pages; $26.95

We think of Herman Melville as one of the giants of American literature, but he was, at his death in 1891, essentially forgotten. Though his first books, the South Sea romances Typee and Omoo, sold well, his later ones — including Moby Dick — were panned as rambling, hazily philosophical, maybe even subversive. Frustrated and embittered, Melville abandoned fiction, eking out a living for himself and his large family as a customs inspector in New York Harbor. In these latter years, he drank a good deal, and, amid bouts of depression, sometimes became violent. All this is given a vivid, at times provocative, portrayal in Jay Parini’s novel The Passages of H.M. And while it’s fiction, one senses that the author sticks pretty close to established fact — most of the time. Parini, a recognized literary scholar, has done previous novels about literary greats, most notably, The Last Station, describing Tolstoy’s final days, recently filmed with Christopher Plummer and Helen Mirren. Parini’s rendering of Melville is a close relative of Melville

as scholarly conceived: A man consumed by massive yearnings — for experience, for ideas, for the means to reconcile a dark, expansive intellect with popular literary tastes. This Melville also yearns strongly for male companionship and love. His seagoing days, his literary efforts and his later travels are punctuated with male friendships that invariably leave him frustrated, seeking greater intimacy in intellectual, emotional and physical terms. Scholars of the past half-century have pondered Melville’s homoerotic possibilities, but Parini’s decision to give them sustained and specific treatment — particularly in depicting Melville’s friendship with Nathaniel Hawthorne — is rather surprising, especially in contrast to the narrative prominence also given Melville’s wife, Elizabeth Shaw Melville. In fact, Parini lets Elizabeth — “Lizzie” — address us directly, a privilege he refuses her husband; Lizzie’s chapters, in first-person, create ironic counterpoint to Melville’s, in third. With relatively little historical information to go on as to Mrs. Melville’s character or her feelings for

her husband, Parini was obliged, as he admits, to create her — and he’s done a bang-up job. In life, the daughter of Lemuel Shaw, chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, Lizzie is here a woman of strong (if conventional) opinions, acerbic wit and Puritan selfcontrol. As Melville, angry at his failure, becomes harsher and more estranged, Lizzie recalls, in sadness and anger, his mother’s dominance over him, her early vision of him as the American Dickens and her chronic struggles to maintain some semblance of family life and marriage. Parini’s Mrs. Melville is a compelling presence. Still, one wonders why the author lets her speak, but not her husband. Admittedly, giving voice to a mind as sprawling and deep as Melville’s would be a daunting task. Then, too, the third-person perspective serves to temper bleaker facets of Melville’s intellect and feeling. All in all, perhaps a wise choice when depicting an anguished titan and the formidable woman who endured him. Bill Hug teaches composition and American literature at Jacksonville State University.

Ward gets access to police investigations that other reporters can only dream about, but her endless scoops put her in danger. Cain is a talented writer, and it’s a shame she settled on a weak motive and far-fetched method of murder. The Night Season is fun, like eating cotton candy, but readers may crave something more substantial.

Color me impressed with ‘de Blob 2’ By Lou Kesten Associated Press

It doesn’t take much to create a videogame icon. In some cases — like Pac-Man and Nintendo’s Kirby — all you need is a circle and a few rudimentary facial features. To that noble tradition we can now add Blob, the mischievous hero of “de Blob 2” (THQ, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $49.99; Nintendo Wii, $39.99). While he was charming enough in his 2008 debut, the sequel is a more satisfying, wellrounded adventure. He’s becoming a real contender. Blob is, well, a blob, a gelatinous mass who rolls and bounces his way through the streets of Prisma City. The metropolis has been taken over by the villainous Comrade Black and his INKT Corp., and all the buildings have been covered in shades of gray. But Blob can absorb paint, which he uses to liven up the bland architecture and inspire the downtrodden populace to revolt. Blob can also slam into Comrade Black’s troops, although tougher enemies may require more paint or a certain color. And power-ups transform Blob into, say, an unstoppable wrecking ball or an all-

other hand, will pick up on the Orwellian satire of Soviet and Chinese communism. There are even a few digs at both occupants of the 21st-century White House — one news crawl reads “Comrade Black asserts that inkboarding is not torture,” while a poster says “I voted for change and all I got was this lousy suit.” Like many other 3-D action games, “de Blob 2” is occasionally marred by inconsistent camera angles that sometimes block your view at the worst possible time (like when trying to make a tricky jump between two platforms). It’s also very stingy with checkpoints; if Blob gets punctured, you may find yourself having to replay 15 minutes or so before you get back to the tough part. iPad 2 is better than your computer Apple created a revolution when the original iPad launched early last year. Now the company is aiming to take things to the next level with its successor. The second-generation tablet computer is smaller, faster and even more Chris Pittman magical. Apple CEO iSpy Steve Jobs announced the device during a scheduled press event Wednesday. I wasn’t expecting many upgrades to the iPad this time around. Fortunately, Apple folks proved once again that they always have secrets up their

sleeve. A 1GHz dual-core Apple A5 chip aims to make the entire experience flow much faster. Web browsing, watching/editing videos and improved multitasking are but a few of the features that will respond better. All of this will come without the battery life taking a hit. Apple claims that the device will still provide 10 hours of use and a month of standby. FaceTime, a video chat feature, is quickly becoming a hit for Apple and now people can use it on the iPad. Front and rear cameras have been added to support the feature. FaceTime was first added in the iPhone 4 last summer. The bigger screen makes more sense for conference calls and online meetings.

The iPad has been popular among many businesses over the past year. FaceTime will make it more attractive to corporations that haven’t embraced the tablet experience. I’ve personally bought several cases and protectors for my iPad to keep the investment in great shape. Apple is creating its own protective item that looks to best all the current options. The Smart Cover was created to cover the tablet without adding any bulk to the thin design. Magnets have been built into the protector to make sure it remains in place. The Smart Cover can also transform into a horizontal stand. Speaking of thin design, the iPad 2 is 33 percent thinner than its predecessor. The device is also

thinner than the iPhone 4. Simply amazing. Apple has kept the same pricing structure this time around. The devices will range from $499 for the WiFi only 16GB model to $820 for the WiFi+3G 64GB device. A Verizon version will be made available alongside the AT&T model. I’d suggest getting the one that matches your phone if applicable. You’ll also be able to select from white or black colors. I’m sure all the people wanting white iPhones are jealous. The iPad 2 will launch one week from today — March 11. You’ll be able to order online at Apple’s online store or by lining up at their retail facilities at 5 p.m. It’s safe to bet the lines will be

fairly long and for good reason. I’ve had my iPad since June and it gets plenty of use each day. A strong mobile device is pretty integral to someone who is on the go often. The iPad 2 will become an even more useful tool for my everyday activities. The addition of an iMovie application opens up new ways to provide the public with news coverage. I’m hoping to be able to film short segments that go with breaking news and then edit them on the spot. The whole experience makes me remember a year ago when Jobs announced the original iPad. The Internet exploded with harsh criticism and claims that the device would be worthless. The only thing worthless at this point is other tablets.

LOS ANGELES — Whether he’s coaching The Biggest Loser contestants, filling in for Kathie Lee Gifford on Today, co-hosting the Miss USA pageant or barbecuing for Oprah Winfrey, it seems like Curtis Stone is everywhere these days. In his role on NBC’s new reality TV eatery contest, he’s adding a new title to his ever-growing resume: investor. The lanky Australian chef is serving as a financial backer of the grand prize — a fast-casual restaurant chain with outposts in Los Angeles, New York and Minneapolis — on America’s Next Great Restaurant (premiering Sunday at 7 p.m.) alongside celebrity chef Bobby Flay, Chipotle founder Steve Ells and Miami restaurateur Lorena Garcia. “Normally, when NBC comes to you and wants you to do a show, you’re like, ‘Woo hoo! I just landed a new show,’” said Stone. “This was different because they actually wanted us to get our checkbooks out.” Stone wouldn’t say how much the group is contributing to launch the winner’s restaurant chain, but he insisted, “We’re all equal investors in terms of our financial commitment to it, which means we get an equal say in how this is going to work.” If it flops, Stone already has another gig lined up. He’s the new host of Bravo’s Top Chef Masters. “It’s a dream job for me,” he said earlier this month on the set of the Bravo cooking competition spin-off, where he’s taken over Kelly Choi’s spot for the third season. “When they first approached me, I told them they needed to mix it up and put all of the chefs together in one pool, and they told me that’s exactly what they were doing.” That means the contest will play out more like a regular Top Chef season. Producers dumped the numerical scoring system in favor of having the experienced cheftestants eliminated one by one by the show’s judges, critics James Oseland and Ruth Richel. Stone said he has learned more about his craft from sitting alongside the critics. “I’ve loved all elements of it,” said Stone. “I get to eat fantastic food every day. I think we have a dynamic balance with a chef at the table. It’s been really interesting for me sitting there with the critics and watching how they analyze food because, as a chef, you’re constantly trying to work out what critics like and don’t like.” Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz, the Top Chef Masters and America’s Next Great Restaurant executive producers at production company Magical Elves, point to Stone’s combination of stunning good looks, exotic Aussie accent, culinary skills and entrepreneurial prowess as the reasons why it seems as though he’s on every TV show these days except Jersey Shore. “There are people that are just naturals on television, and Curtis is one of them,” said Cutforth, who first met Stone with Lipsitz two years ago. “We really don’t like working with people who feel like they’re adopting a

Drive-By Truckers celebrate roots on ‘Go-Go Boots’ By Chris Talbott Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — David Hood did everything he could to keep his son out of the music business except tie the boy down. Despite his own success as the bassist in the historic Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, Hood didn’t want his son, The DriveBy Truckers frontman Patterson Hood, following his path. So he barred the kid from his sessions at the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in north Alabama where he played for seminal acts like Percy Sledge, The Staples Singers, Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon and Rod Stewart. He declared his mind-blowing record collection off limits to little fingers. And when The Rolling Stones came to town he bought plane tickets and sent 5-year-old Patterson and his mother to his grandparents in Aruba. “So he not only had us out of town, he had us out of the country,” the younger Hood said. When Patterson took a job at a pharmacy in his teens, Hood was elated. Maybe his son would become a doctor or a pharmacist. “Somebody that might be able to help an old musician,” the elder Hood said with a smile. “Or just get me through the night.” It was false hope, though. Patterson fell in love with music, of course. How could he not? And worse, he wanted to be in a ... punk rock band. These days the Hoods chuckle over the long, winding path that led Patterson to his own place in the rock ‘n’ roll world with The Drive-By Truckers. But Patterson Hood, 46, still remembers the look on his father’s face when he started sharing his music with him. “I wasn’t very good at it and he couldn’t see that there might be potential,” Patterson Hood said. “Because he knew how hard the business was — ‘And he’s wanting to do this? He sucks. And he’s my son.’ You know?” Decades later David Hood, 67,

Patterson and his band of friends have forged the kind of career David Hood could never have imagined. With their sprawling, cinematic songs, incendiary live show and tireless touring schedule, they’ve carved out their own niche and earned a fervent following. These days David Hood even takes the stage with The Truckers occasionally, as he did at a recent show at Third Man Records. And he’s got no problem admitting he was wrong about Patterson and his dream. “Anybody who makes it now or is surviving now in music, it’s amazing,” David Hood said. “It’s a sad state. But they’re doing so well. Their story is not sad. Their story is happy.” The Truckers have just released their second album in a year, Go-Go Boots, a foray into country soul that celebrates the sound of Hood’s childhood. The 15-year-old band, an extension

I don’t think it’s one of those things that just peaks, then becomes a little less popular.” — Mike Cooley, Drive By Truckers of a musical partnership between Hood and bandmate Mike Cooley that has survived 26 years and a shifting roster of collaborators and names, began recording the songs for the album in 2009 alongside the straight-ahead rockers that became 2010’s The Big To-Do. They had that Muscle Shoals feel to them and many of the songs recalled snatches of real life played out in northern Alabama. The album revolves around “Go-Go Boots” and “The Fireplace Poker,” a pair of related songs about a duplicitous preacher who pays to have his wife

killed, then pays the price for his sins. Like the band’s epic breakthrough, Southern Rock Opera, the songs are based on an idea Hood had for a film. A handful of others — especially the melancholy groove of “Used to be a Cop” and unhappy holidays song “The Thanksgiving Filter” — also have that sprawling feel of a story told over hours, not minutes. “I’m a frustrated filmmaker when it really comes down to it,” said Patterson Hood, who now lives in Athens, Ga. “If you look at our albums as movies without the movie, they actually make more

sense than they do as albums. That didn’t dawn on me till just about two albums or so ago — ‘Wow, that’s what’s wrong with this picture.’” Cooley contributes three country-tinged songs, rivaling Hood as a storyteller with songs such as the wistful “Pulaski” that play out like shorts stories. The band rounds out the album with a couple of covers of songs by Eddie Hinton, a soul singer and songwriter who played in the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section from 1967 to 1971. It’s an album that’s beautiful and moving, while gritty and raw, and shows a band at the height of its creative powers. Hood and Cooley, 44, spent much of their early years together in a band that eventually fell apart, then nursed The Truckers through difficult times, some of which are outlined in the 2009 documentary The Secret to a Happy Ending. The tough times are over and Go-Go Boots serves as a milepost marker far down the road to rock ‘n’ roll success. Houses have been purchased, families started and plans built upon a concrete foundation. “I feel we can do this as long as we are able and want to,” Cooley said. “I don’t think it’s one of those things that just peaks, then becomes a little less popular. You know, we’ve never had a hit record. Thank God! It’s downhill from there.” It’s the kind of career that can make a father proud — and a grandfather of musically inclined grandchildren reconsider his opinions. “I know from experience now that you can’t stop them,” David Hood said. “If one of them’s going to do it, they’re going to do it, and so you better just go ahead and give them all the help you can. I think my son may have a musician in his son, and my daughter’s son shows some aptitude. They’re all crazy kids. I think anyone of them could be something.”

Now happily married and in her 50s, Williams has sometimes struggled to bring the same passion and clarity to a life more settled. With 2008’s uneven Little Honey, she sang of personal fulfillment in terms both spiritual and sexual, while ramping up the blues-rock component of her ragged, roots-based sound. The title of her new album, Blessed, may suggest more songs of bliss. However, Williams now looks outside her own heart and

experiences — and proves she can be just as moving when singing about others instead of herself. She keeps the music rough yet tightly arranged, juxtaposing raw guitar rockers with gentle acoustic tidings, similar to Neil Young’s eclectic Americana style. Williams still focuses on characters living outside of society, as in the heartbreaking “I Don’t Know How You’re Livin’,” but now it’s with a maternal concern rather than as a fellow traveler. What Blessed brings back is the charitable grace with which Williams sees the world — an openhearted yet unflinching honesty that continues to make her music a sweet blessing in a tough world. CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: “Seeing Black” isn’t the first time Williams has written about a friend’s suicide. But this time she’s joined by Elvis Costello on guitar (but not vocals), for a seething rocker that’s as angry as it is mournful.

There are these guys, see? And they’re dressed in slightly out-of-date suits, gray mostly. And they wear hats — each and every one of them, all the time. They dress like Mad Men and they’re led by a Mad Men star (John Slattery). But they’re not in advertising, circa 1962. No, these guys run a vast bureaucracy that clocks in every morning and decides our fate. Make a move that doesn’t follow the predetermined path your life was supposed to follow, they set you straight. That’s what The Adjustment Bureau does, manipulate events so that your life, from start to finish, follows their plan. And

nobody sees them, nobody knows they’re doing this. Until David Norris. His run for Congress just got derailed and he’s just met a woman who changed his whole world view. An impulsive guy, acting on impulse, David (Matt Damon) stumbles into the knowledge of this “Bureau.” And as years pass and effort is expended by that apparatus — Are they angels, micro-managing aliens? — David battles them for the chance to re-connect with Elise (Emily Blunt), who set off sparks with him on the worst day of his life. The Adjustment Bureau, written and directed by George Nolfi, the writer of Damon’s last Bourne and Oceans Twelve, has hints of several supernatural romances, especially Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Damon and Blunt have spectacular chemistry, and their flirtations have such snap that you’d swear Damon is blushing as Blunt bats her eyes at him. This Inception meets Made in Heaven by way of They Live is also the screwiest movie Matt Damon has been in since,

what, Dogma? But The Adjustment Bureau is a romantic thriller too caught up in the thrills to be as romantic as it needs to be. David carries around this top-secret knowledge and schemes for that moment when he can go “off plan.” Slattery dons his hat and sets off in pursuit as David tries this trick and that to escape the manipulating overseers and find his way to the slender, sexy dancer he only knows by her first name. That tug we’re supposed to feel, the thing that pulls them back together and drags us along with them, rooting for them to connect — it’s just not strong enough to sustain what it essentially a cute thriller treatment of the war between free will and determinism, the notion that we do or do not control our own destiny. It’s romantic and intellectually stimulating and like Inception, it may have you arguing with your date on the ride home. But it plays like a movie by a thriller writer who is better at chases than at romance. Which it is.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Turns out Kix Brooks is a bit of a renaissance man. Six months after his split with Ronnie Dunn, ending the 20-year run of country music’s best-selling duo, Brooks & Dunn, Brooks is branching out in new directions. Already a radio host, accomplished songwriter and professional vintner, Brooks is trybrooks ing out the acting biz. He recently wrapped a small part in the upcoming movie Thriftstore Cowboy and has accepted a leading role in another, The Last Ride, which will be shot in May in Arizona. Brooks describes Thriftstore Cowboy as a “kind of a modern age urban cowboy sort of scenario.” “I guess I didn’t screw it up too bad or they wouldn’t have offered me the role” in The Last Ride, he said. Brooks admitted he was leery of taking on a leading role with so little experience in acting, but he liked the story. It’s the story of a lawman duped into helping with a deadly bank robbery that sends him to jail. It’s set in the 1940s and is told in flashbacks that won’t require Brooks to turn his trademark cowboy hat. “It’s really fun,” Brooks said. “You kidding? Every kid wants to play cowboy.” A lot of kids want to play guitar, too, and Brooks has been doing plenty of that lately as well. He’s been taking his radio show, “American Country Countdown,” on the road and has hosted a handful of “radio appreciation” concerts with young, up and coming acts like Luke Bryan, Randy Houser and Lee Brice. And, like Dunn, he’s been writing songs for a new album that will be released on a Sony imprint. “I’m probably halfway done with it,” Brooks said. “The label seems real excited about it, so I’m writing a lot of songs.”

It’s Hot Tub Time Machine without the time machine or the hot tub. Or the fun that entailed. Topher Grace, now a wellpreserved 32, is Matt, the recent M.I.T. grad working for Suncoast Video while he tries to decide what to do with his life. Anna Faris, now 34, is Wendy, Matt’s twin sister, equally directionless also working at Suncoast. And Dan Fogler, now 34, is Barry, Matt’s burly, boozy loose cannon pal. He skipped college

The lesson of these movies are all the same: that you can go back, you can make sure that you don’t live the rest of your life bitter that you didn’t “go for it.” But you can’t go back, no matter how many Hollywood agents say, “You could still pass for 22, sure!”

The first good movie of the new year happens to be a “tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme.” “Beastly” is a high school non-musical updating of Beauty and the Beast. Witty, warm, well-cast and often wickedly funny, it lets Vanessa Hudgens shine and Alex Pettyfer give a hint of what all the fuss over him is about. Pettyfer is spot-perfect playing handsome, vain and cruel Kyle, the son of a rich TV anchor (Peter Krause) who taught him “People like people who look good.” Thus, Kyle’s lifelong aversion to “hatchet faces, “guts with butts” and “fattycakes.” But Kyle, the arrogant king of Buckston Academy, is playing with fire when he taunts the school’s resident witch. and his veins look like the roots of a dying tree. Shallow Kyle has a year to make somebody see past his hideous appearance. He has a year to repent and make

himself worthy of someone else’s love. Hudgens (High School Musical) gives her least mannered, most realistic performance as Lindy, a smart girl stuck with a junkie dad with violent enemies. That allows beastly Kyle, calling himself Hunter, to take her into hiding in his penthouse, to build a greenhouse to grow her roses, to win her by thinking first of her and not of himself. Writer-director Daniel Barnz (Phoebe in Wonderland) turns Miami novelist Alex Flinn’s tale into a showcase of glib dialogue and scene-stealing supporting players. Neil Patrick Harris shows up and lands roughly a laugh a minute as Will, the blind tutor as quick with a put-down as he is with sound advice. Lisa Gay Hamilton (The Soloist) turns a cliche — she plays a Jamaican housekeeper who tries to help Kyle find his way to kindness — into a minor triumph. Beastly is the first movie from the yearold CBS Films to suggest that there’s life in the Eye Network’s movie division, and that there might yet be a niche CBS can fill — smart, well-directed teen fantasies cast with lots of TV stars.

Academy Award hosts played it a little too safe So I think most people reacted to 83rd Academy Awards the same way James Franco did to most of the overly safe writing. And that is to say, with an overwhelming sense of indifference. And I can’t blame the hosts. I mean, Anne Hathaway tried, bless her heart, and Franco is charming Bobby enough when Bozeman given somePop thing interestCultured ing to say, but after all the awards were handed out, I was left unentertained. And that’s saying something when Franco was onstage dressed as a woman and was

upstaged by a 94-year-old Kirk Douglas. But there was a definite overreaction to Ricky Gervais and the Golden Globes by the Oscars. So the writing ended up being too safe and was worse than offensive, it was just boring. And really, an awards show like the Oscars can’t really let something like the Golden Globes define how they do things. But enough about the ceremony, let’s look at what they actually got right, and didn’t, in giving out the hardware.

Best Director Well, David Fincher is still waiting for his first best director statue, and so is Darren Aronofsky. Really Fincher, a feature film veteran, got robbed by Tom

Hooper. Hooper’s The King’s Speech, while obviously a very good film, is only his second major feature film. Also note that The King’s Speech didn’t win any technical or musical awards. So I have to say, the Academy got this one wrong.

Art Direction/Makeup/ Costume The Wolfman and Alice in Wonderland won more Oscars than the majority of best picture nominees, including True Grit. Something about that just doesn’t seem right.

wins. Again I’ll note that Alice in Wonderland won two.

Best Original Score Despite what some have said, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross totally deserved this award. You know why? Because The Social Network had the best score of the year. No other score set the mood and tension of a film as strongly as Fincher’s The Social Network, with the exception of maybe Inception.

Visual Effects Inception was a lock for this category but still, it’s good to see all that hard work rewarded.

Speaking of the Coen brothBest Film Editing ers’ movie, it had the second most nominations this year with It’s interesting to note how 10, but didn’t walk away with any often this category goes to the

film that also wins best picture, but this year it went to The Social Network — the film that lost in both the director and best picture categories. I feel like this shows us how close The Social Network and The King’s Speech really were.

Best Actor/Actress These were two very competitive categories, with really no wrong choices. The Academy picked the people they were supposed to pick so, I guess not a lot to say here, except that here would have been a good place for an upset. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, where “the drugs began to take hold” in the Johnny Depp adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In the manic, animated Rango, which stars Depp as a chameleon, our coordinates are similar, and the hallucinogens are well under way. It’s as though the drug-conjured lizards of Fear and Loathing have been contracted by Hollywood and tasked to make a Western. Go West, young reptile. But Rango proceeds from a presumably more sober place: the mind of director Gore Verbinski, who helmed the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. It’s his first animated film, but if you recall Depp’s Jack Sparrow, you’ll note that Verbinski is well acquainted with cartoon. Rango is also a first animated feature for the effects house Industrial Light & Magic. Together, they’ve created perhaps the most cinematic animated film since Pixar’s Ratatouille. As a slapstick comedy, it doesn’t have the emotion resonance of a Pixar film, but it’s a visually stunning, endlessly inventive, completely madcap Western, made with obvious love for the genre. Rango begins as movies should: with a Mariachi band of musical owls. Our narrators, they introduce the film and our hero, an early hint at the self-consciousness pervading the wink-filled Rango. We find our chameleon protagonist in full theatrical flight, turning his pet lizard tank into a film

set, with supporting roles played by an inanimate fish toy and a palm tree: “Acting is reacting,” he knowingly professes to no one. With a wide, flat Don Rickles mouth and two giant bowl-shaped eyes, Rango, clad in a red Hawaiian shirt, doesn’t look like your normal animated hero. We quickly learn that he’s a precocious young actor whose life cooped up as a pet has habituated his imagination to flights of fancy. He is badly in need of an audience. Rango is bounced out of his cage by a bump in the road and — in a beautifully done scene — tossed from the back seat of his unseen owners onto a Mojave Desert road, where he comes careening to a stop atop a broken piece of glass. Spurred by an “enlightenment”-seeking armadillo (Alfred Molina), he sets out on a journey of self-discovery that includes momentarily landing on the windshield of the Fear and Loathing convertible, with Depp’s former character inside. Rango winds up in the old, rickety desert town of Dirt. Despite a resume that includes, as he claims, two one-acts and a working musical, Rango — less a chameleon of color than of character — dons the role of gunslinger so that he might impress the townspeople. Inside a saloon, he claims with great bravado that he comes from the West, “beyond the sunset,” and vanquished seven with a single bullet. Rango’s dialogue, from John Logan’s witty screenplay, is thoroughly Deppian in its verbosity. Rango boasts of eating men like the menacing Gila monster Bad Bill (Ray Winstone) for breakfast, adding: “Then we braise him in clarified butter.” Rango is convincing enough that he’s made sheriff of Dirt. It’s a town teaming with ragged curiosities: a drunk rabbit (Stephen Root), a slinky fox (Claudia Black), a wide-eyed and cynical mouse (Abigail Breslin), the prairie dog Balthazar (Harry Dean Stanton). There’s also the potential love interest lizard named Beans (Isla Fisher). Dirt’s problem is water. Its dwindling supply is kept in a large jug in a bank’s vault. The town’s tor-

toise mayor (Ned Beatty) tells Rango: “You control the water, you control the desert.” With folksy villainy and a creaky wheelchair, the mayor is a perfect stand-in for John Huston’s Noah Cross of Chinatown. That film supplies the frame for much of Rango, though only to a point. Incest is tabled and no nosey fellows get their nostrils sliced, but solving the mystery of the missing water is Rango’s mission. He seems no better equipped than Jake Gittes to solve what he deems Dirt’s “aquatic conundrum.” (His advice to one little creature: “Burn everything but Shakespeare.”) But Rango is a method actor, and he eventually becomes the part. As smart as Rango is, what most stands out is its simulation of light. With the great cinematographer Roger Deakins serving as a visual consultant and visual effects headed by Mark McCreery, the refraction of light in Rango may be the pinnacle yet in animation. Shadows fall through the saloon — with glowing amber glasses of whiskey (or “cactus juice”) — so authentically designed that one swears the room full of gun-totting varmints is real. Wisps of dust swirl across the road’s cracked pavement. Like Wes Anderson’s entry to animation, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Verbinski has brought live-action tools to an animated medium. The results in Rango are so lively that the post-movie conversation will go some time before any moviegoer remembers that 3-D was (thankfully) omitted. The movie’s postmodernism could be considered too cloying, but it comes off charming, especially because it pulls from such great sources. The Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone are joyfully referenced, complete with a cameo from the Man With No Name (voiced by Timothy Olyphant, not Clint Eastwood). Hans Zimmer’s score is a playful ode to those of Ennio Morricone. Perhaps a new classification has been born: the “SpaghettiOs Western.”

LOS ANGELES — Charlie Sheen is living large on the public stage but his personal world is diminished, with the TV star’s Two and a Half Men and now his twin toddlers missing from his life. Sheen’s 23-month-old boys were taken from his home Tuesday night after estranged wife Brooke Mueller Sheen claimed that he threatened her with decapitation, adding a nasty custody battle to the actor’s bitter war with the studio and producers who shut down the hit CBS show short of the season’s end. Her claims followed days of sometimes manic, sometimes violence-tinged media interviews by Sheen, part of a public campaign to disprove that he is a drug-using, reckless playboy who was unable or unfit to work on TV’s No. 1 comedy. In an interview with NBC’s Today show Wednesday, Sheen said he was “very calm and focused” about having the children taken away but was ready to fight to get them back. Outside his home a short time later, Sheen, 45, was asked by reporters whether the legal move came out of left field for him. “It came out of the bleachers, actually,” he said. “Yeah, I was told a restraining order was being delivered and I thought, ‘OK, I can deal with that.’ And it was revealed that it was something much more serious. Asked why Mueller got the court order, he replied, “It’s just silly. I think she’s latching on to some of this recent press.” In interviews filled with strange comments such as “I got tiger blood, man,” Sheen has lobbed vitriol at Men executive producer Chuck Lorre and Warner Bros. Television while sharing details about his unusual home life and insisting he was “winning.” He’s demanding a big raise in future contracts for the show from his $1.8 million-an-episode pay — already among the highest in television. CBS Corp. chief Leslie Moonves on Tuesday said the series’ future is uncertain.

Sheen’s grandstanding has fascinated the public, with his Twitter account drawing more than 1 million followers a day after it was created. But in Mueller Sheen’s claim seeking a restraining order Tuesday, she said that his “bizarre, disturbing and violent” comments made her fear for the safety of their children because Sheen “does not appear mentally stable.” According to Mueller Sheen’s filing, Charlie Sheen has rarely seen the boys in the past year, but took them on Saturday and refused to return them. In a sworn declaration filed in the case, she said he told her in a phone call Sunday night, “I will cut your head off, put it in a box and send it to your mom!” She also claimed earlier threats and physical abuse. A court order issued Tuesday and obtained by The Associated Press requires Sheen to stay 100 yards away from Mueller Sheen and their twin sons. Sheen has two other children with former wife Denise Richards. A hearing on the order is scheduled for March 22. The twins, Max and Bob, were taken from Sheen’s Hollywood Hills home Tuesday night and returned to their mother’s care. The boys turn 2 on March 14.

The seemingly unlimited soapbox that media outlets have given Sheen has provoked strong criticism. “No one is exercising any discretion, at least the kind that weighs things like taste, proportion and decency instead of ratings points,” Los Angeles Times media columnist James Rainey wrote in Wednesday’s paper. Ben Grossman, editor-in-chief of Broadcasting & Cable magazine, urged ABC on Monday to cancel its 20/20 interview with Sheen that night. He rapped the media for “celebrating the sad effects of an illness. And that is not a healthy way to do business.” In her filing, Mueller Sheen noted a Christmas Day 2009 fight in Aspen, Colo., that led to the actor pleading guilty to misdemeanor third-degree assault. Sometime after that incident, Mueller Sheen wrote in her court filing that Sheen told her, “I should have killed you when I had the chance!” Mueller Sheen acknowledges her own sobriety issues in the declaration. She said she is in a day rehab treatment program, but that she can care for the children for four hours during the day and at night. She told the court that she would be living with a sober companion, and that her mother would help with the twins’ care.

This was a satiric sketch show on speed, for a nation suddenly hot the best of to be hip. Every Monday laugh-in night, producer George Schlatter’s beautifulSaturday at 7 p.m. downtown-Burbank on PBS cast of crazies filled a comic blender with current events, fluorescent fashions and outre attitude. No more extended skits delivered from beginning to end. Laugh-In cut to the chase, pitching out punch lines with a giddy laugh or a dah-dum! music cue, then jump-cutting to the next kaleidoscope of “quickies.” Veteran comedy team Dan Rowan (straight man) and Dick Martin (cut-up) reinvented themselves hosting this cool party. It actually included the weekly segment The Party, where madly dancing merrymakers froze every few seconds for another pithy punch line on topical buzz: the Pill, drugs, Vietnam, hippies, race. They introduced an overflowing young ensemble, with kooky characters — Lily Tomlin as the Tasteful Lady or 5-year-old Edith Ann, Henry Gibson as flower-toting poet, Jo Anne Worley as lady loudmouth, Goldie Hawn as the giggling girl in a bikini with slogans painted all over her boogieing body. TV and movie stars flocked to sockit-to-’em, too — from old-timers like John Wayne and Jack Benny to younger talent like Peter Sellers, Johnny Carson and Cher. (Plus Richard Nixon!) MY SAY: Schlatter’s best-of compilation captures the show’s freewheeling vibe and all its component parts, right down to the showending Joke Wall, where cast members threw open tiny doors to trade barbs of humor as the credits rolled. Hindsight elevates Laugh-In’s influence alongside the more heralded Monty Python, illuminating its free-form blend of visual gags, non sequiturs and random chaos. I mean, novelty act Tiny Tim tiptoeing through the tulips — top that, Brits! BOTTOM LINE: Fun flashback still socks quite a comic punch.
