LOS ANGELES — As an actor, Jeff Bridges followed his Oscarwinning turn as down-but-notout country singer Bad Blake in Crazy Heart with an Oscar-nominated spin as down-but-notout lawman Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. Now comes the news that Bridges will pick up a guitar once more, not bridges for Crazy Heart II, but for an album slated to be produced by his longtime friend, producer and Crazy Heart prime mover T Bone Burnett. Bridges has signed with Blue Note Records and is scheduled to release his major-label debut album late this summer, according to a statement released Tuesday by Blue Note. The project will include songs written by Bridges as well as material from Tom Waits, the late Crazy Heart music supervisor Stephen Bruton, Greg Brown and others. The actor-musician will share vocal duties on some tracks with guests including Rosanne Cash, Sam Phillips and Benjie Hughes. Shortly after Crazy Heart was completed Burnett noted that Bridges and director Scott Cooper were intimately involved with the creation of the original songs used in the film. “Really, Jeff and Scott could get writing credit on these songs, because they contributed so much,” Burnett told the Los Angeles Times in 2009. “Even though I’m not sure they wrote any actual lines, the discussions would become songs. Somebody would say something, Jeff would say, ‘That’s a song’ — that sort of thing.”

Tragedy brings Deftones closer for new album By Kevin C. Johnson St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The Deftones had a tough task in front of it as it recorded its latest album Diamond Eyes. It’s the first album the Deftones recorded without its longtime bassist, Chi Cheng, who was injured in a car accident in 2008. But the tragedy ultimately brought the rest of the Deftones closer together. “We appreciate what we have, what we built and the friendships we have,” says lead singer Chino Moreno. “But when something like this happens, it’s a wake-up call to start realizing we’re lucky to have each other.” The band was in the middle of recording an album, to be called Eros, at the time of

Cheng’s accident. But the band mates took an extended break to support their friend. When it was time to reconvene minus Cheng, who remains in an improving but still semi-conscious state, they had a change of plans. “Instead of trying to piece together what we were working on and try to teach someone else, we figured if we wanted to continue as a band we had to rebuild the infrastructure from the ground up,” Moreno says. The band brought in Sergio Vega, known for his work with Quicksand. “Having someone new in the band is new blood,” Moreno says. “He gave us a kick in our step, and that’s a good thing.” Once Vega joined the band, the Deftones hit the ground

running. They’d lost a lot time and needed to play catch-up. They locked themselves in their tiny Los Angeles rehearsal spot for eight hours a day for two months. Usually, they work at a more leisurely pace but figured this time they might “capture lightning in a bottle.” With Diamond Eyes, Moreno says the Deftones go a little left from where they’ve been before, something they try to do with each record. “We never want to re-create the same record. It’s simplified and straightforward. We didn’t get over self-indulgent or experimental.” Moreno says Diamond Eyes differs from what would’ve been on Eros. Those songs “were long and there was a lot of jamming-style stuff, which was fun to do. But it wasn’t as

concise.” In addition to Diamond Eyes, the Deftones are also promoting Covers, a covers album released in conjunction with this month’s Record Store Day. It has songs from Sade, the Cars, the Smiths, Duran Duran and the Cure. “Every time we record a record, at the end of the process we always squeeze in a cover song just for fun. We like to try things people wouldn’t expect from us,” he says. Eros, meanwhile, remains in the vault indefinitely. The band hasn’t listened to the music since Cheng’s accident. “When we do, there were be a lot of emotions. It’s pretty deep stuff, and it’s the last thing he played on.”

Emmylou Harris, Hard Bargain (Nonesuch) It’s interesting that Emmylou Harris decided to name her new album Hard Bargain — after the Ron Sexsmith song, one of only two here that she didn’t write — since she makes everything look so easy. This collection is filled with effortless, timeless, beautiful songs, at the intersection of folk, rock and country that Harris has built into a magnificent career. “The Road” is a pretty retrospective of her time with the great Gram Parsons, with the verses sung

in her potent rock voice and the chorus in the lovely heights of her upper register. It’s a testament to her vocal strength that she can make a quick turn from that to the yearning “Home Sweet Home” and the wrenching “My Name Is Emmett Till,” where she sings from the point of view of Emmett, a 14year-old black boy who was killed in Mississippi in 1955 after reportedly speaking to a white woman. The beauty in her delivery makes her lyrics all the more harrowing, as she sings, “The ones who beat and cut me and shot me with a gun threw me in the river like I was trash when they were done.” Harris also rocks out on

Steve Earle, I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive (New West) Veteran singer-songwriter Steve Earle invokes Hank Williams in his new album’s title, I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive, which also serves as the name of his first novel, to be published in May. As Earle well knows, a song with the same title served as Williams’ epitaph: Hank’s “I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive” was a radio hit at the time of his death at age 29.

But rather than sing about succumbing at an early age, Earle uses this collection of original songs to celebrate survival and struggle. Working with producer T Bone Burnett, who mixes traditional folk music with bassheavy rhythms, Earle deals with dark fates, from doomed politicians to dangerous backstreet encounters to an oil spill that threatens the livelihood of a shrimping family that has worked the same waters for generations. He counters those songs with tales about how perseverance can pay off, whether it’s New Orleans rising from disas-

ter in the fiercely stated “This City” (first heard on the HBO series Treme, in which Earle has a recurring role) to finding lasting love late in life in the tender ballad “Every Part Of Me”. Returning as part of the team are Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Matt Schulze, Tego Calderon and Don Omar. Elsa Pataky joins the cast as possibly Brazil’s lone honest police officer, a woman tapped by Hobbs to help him chase down Toretto’s gang. But words like honest don’t mean much in the Fast Five world, where good guys are bad, bad guys are good, and only the really, really bad guys get what they’ve got coming. There’s no moral compass here (and apparently no clock, either; the movie runs much too long, and despite the breathless pace, the trip does start to wear on you). The only compass is the one pointing down the road straight ahead, down which The Fast and the Furious flicks will keep moving faster and faster. Maybe the filmmakers can do a little Alice in Wonderland rhyming and call the next one Furiouser and Furiouser.

It’s not just prom, it’s Disney’s Prom. And so no one smokes, no one sneaks in peach schnapps in a flask and no one gets lucky in the back of a limo. This is all about that magical night when everyone gets together, regardless of the social hierarchy that had been firmly in place the past four years, and dreams come true. Wholesome, earnest dreams for wholesome, earnest kids — except for the resident bad boy, that is. But naturally, he’ll turn out to have a heart of gold. Yes, director Joe Nussbaum’s film, from a script by Katie Wech, is chock-full of high-school movie cliches — sometimes knowingly and amusingly so. There’s a tall, misfit character named Lloyd (Nicholas Braun) who resembles Say Anything ...-era John Cusack — a tall, misfit character named Lloyd. Of course, the straight-arrow good girl (Aimee Teegarden) will get stuck working with the motorcycle-riding rebel (Thomas McDonell), and they will see through their respective prejudices to not only get along but fall for each other. Still, the sweetness and guilelessness of Prom is actually strangely charming, and for its target audience — girls who are several years away from having to pick out that perfect dress — this will be a safe, enjoyable and validating little diversion.

Andy Dick does a Hannibal Lecter bit as an evil bunny, David Alan Grier finds a few laughs as a troll. And casting Bill Hader and Amy Poehler as the Germanic strudel-addicts Hansel & Gretel was inspired. It’s a pity the facial animation is so cut-rate, that the normally funny Warburton and David Ogden Stiers (as Nicky Flippers, the frog in charge of Happily Ever After) are given nothing funny to say and that the story is nothing more than a series of martial arts video game “levels” for small children. Yes, it’s in 3-D and no, it’s not remotely as good as Rio. And if your kids saw the first one in a theater, they’ve certainly outgrown the sequel. But for children still of the “We’ll watch anything so long as it’s animated” age, Hoodwinked Too! is at least a passable time-passer.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The party just keeps rolling for country music star Jason Aldean. Long left out of major award consideration, Aldean’s recent tear continued Wednesday morning when he received a leading four 2011 CMT Music Awards nominations. The singer’s video for “My aldean Kinda Party” earned nods for CMT’s top award, video of the year, and male video of the year. Six acts trail Aldean by one with three nominations apiece: Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, Zac Brown Band, Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert and The Band Perry. All are nominees for video of the year. Seven others received two nominations apiece. The nominations for the awards, which are in their 10th year, were announced Wednesday morning on NBC’s Today show. Fans can now decide the winners in 10 categories on the video channel’s website and will choose the video of the year winner during the June 8 awards telecast.
