Mwei uses testy pass to grab Woodstock win, new course record By Al Muskewitz amuskewitz@annistonstar.com
You don’t win as many races as Reuben Mwei has this season without pulling off some risky maneuvers. The 25-year-old Kenyan made a daring move in Saturday’s Woodstock 5K that not only led to his winning the men’s race and RRCA 5K national championship, but doing it in record fashion. In a move worthy of a last-lap pass at Talladega, with a hint of passing under the yellow line, Mwei stepped in front of Elkanah Kibet in the final lefthand turn about a quarter-mile from the finish and pulled away. He finished in 14 minutes, 16 seconds, breaking the record set last year by three seconds, earning him a $500 bonus. Kibet was second at 14:26, followed by former Alabama runner Emmanuel Bor (14:43) and Oscar Ogwaro (14:47). Mwei said there was nothing personal intended in the move, he was just going for it. There was no friction between the runners when they took the victory stand afterwards. “I was going for the record, there was nothing else,” he said with his coach and wife of six months Ruth standing nearby. “I looked at my watch and then I said … if I don’t make a move right here, I’ll not get this record.” Mwei and Kibet were approaching the final turn back onto Woodstock side-by-side. Kibet was about the swing past the marker when Mwei, who always takes corners tight to shave time, zipped in underneath for the lead. “I needed to keep moving, you don’t know if they have a kick,” he said. “Maybe it’s not your day. You have to be careful with that.” The move seemed to catch Kibet by surprise as he stopped to avoid a collision. There was no contact, but the former Auburn runner couldn’t restart his stride and Mwei coasted in with a seemingly easy victory. “The boys were close in the corner and I was inside, so I was slowing down and Reuben cut me; I had to stop completely,” Kibet said. “I don’t think you can do something like that. “He was on the right and I was on the left, and he just come and cut me to go to the left at the corner. I had to stop. I have no problem. I just told him that’s not good; you cannot do that because we are going to finish at a high pace and we’re going toward the finish. If you do that, you are just making somebody not (want) to compete with you.” Kibet said he would have had a “very good” chance to win the race had the trouble at the turn not taken place. “I was ready for (the race),” he said. “I have run with Rueben before. I’ve never caught him, but today we ran the whole race, so I was ready for it, because I wouldn’t let him go.” Mwei, the Division II steeplechase national champion from Adams (Colo.) State, said he hasn’t lost a 5- or 10K race. That includes 10K wins in Huntsville, Tupelo, Miss. and Clarksburg, W. Va., and all the various local 5K he’s run. He also was an impressive 13th in a tight finish at the Peachtree 10K. He was a late entry to Woodstock. Although his college forte is steeplechase, he has started running road races to improve his strength for an attempt at an Olympic bid. “These guys used to beat me in college, but this is a different thing,” Mwei said. “Road races and track is different, college and after college is different.” Kibet was a late entry as well. He said he only runs once a day (for 8 to 10 miles) during the offseason and one of his training friends convinced him to make Saturday’s run the Woodstock. In spite of what happened late in the race, he said the course was good and planned to return next year. Mwei said he would be back, too. “I will come and defend my title,” he said. Reuben Mwei pulls away from Elkanah Kibet after making a controversial pass late in Saturday’s Woodstock 5K. The pass hampered Kibet’s momentum and helped to give Mwei the win and a new course record.

Really, the good guys, ...um, gals, do finish last
Trent Penny/The Anniston Star
The tie-dye clad balloon ladies brought a little cheer to fans and participants a like as the last of Saturday’s Woodstock finishers.
For the record, the last-place finishers in Saturday’s Woodstock 5K walked across the finish line in one hour, one minute and 54 seconds. They walked not loudly — unless one counts their brightly-colored, tie-dyed shirts, peace-sign headbands and balloons — but most proudly, because finishing last was the goal. Check that. Really it was Joe their job. Medley Check that again for Wellborn’s Michelle Butler, because leading Saturday’s designated last finishers was a happy sacrifice. She’s a runner and could have beaten a good portion of Saturday’s field of nearly 1,300 runners, but she knows how it feels to worry about being last. She worried at her first triathlon and learned, much to her relief, there was a designated last finisher. That’s why she volunteered to be last Saturday. “It just made me feel better, so I wanted to return that favor here,” she said. “There might be somebody who is doing it for the first time that was really worried they were going to be last.” So Butler led a foursome including long-
time friend Lisa Heflin and their daughters, Hope Butler and Alyssa Heflin. And that’s all she led. Michelle Butler and her team — dressed to a 1960s Woodstock theme — lined up behind the 30-minute-and-over set at the starting line. Each toted five, helium-filled balloons and a handful of flowers. Taking her job quite seriously, Butler flagged down anyone wearing a bib who wandered behind them at the starting line. Everybody had to be in front of her crew, she told them with a gentle smile. When the starting gun sounded, the balloon ladies patiently waited for the mass of humanity in front of them to move. And then the elderly gentleman in the University of Alabama running outfit began his race-walk gate. And then the couple in camouflage shorts and long jogging pants was off, along with their dog. And then Butler and crew put one foot in front of the other, determined to keep both feet behind the rest. Off they went to protect the pride of others and serve as Woodstock ambassadors, handing flowers and balloons to race volunteers and residents who cheered the field on. Please see joe ❙ Page 5D

Little help
After timing troubles, Cherobon-Bawcom paces way to record By Bran Strickland bstrickland@annistonstar.com
Trent Penny/The Anniston Star
Janet Cherobon-Bawcom crossed the finish line with a time of 16 minutes, 20 seconds, which was good for a new course record and a $500 bonus.
Runners — at least elite runners — don’t wear any more than they have to. The shoes on their feet, and a swath of spandex or piece of polyester to cover the necessary parts is about all they need. But there is one luxury many allow themselves: a watch. Janet Cherobon-Bawcom’s failed her on Saturday, but she managed to overcome that obstacle to win the 2011 Woodstock 5K, the RRCA National Championship, in 16 minutes, 20 seconds. It was Cherobon-Bawcom’s second straight Woodstock win, besting last year’s winning time by 26 seconds to set a new course record for the second time in as many chances, giving her an additional $500 on top of the $500 first-place prize she took home. Even though she could use the extra $500 to buy a new watch, CherobonBawcom blamed it mostly on operator error. So with the money on the line, she took a page from Joe Cocker or the Beatles — she got by with a little help from her friends. “I know Scott Strand (former Woodstock winner), and he was in front of me,” Cherobon-Bawcom said. “He told me was going to run a 15:30. “I just decided to keep in touch with him. I’m glad he did, because it would have been a shame — just awful — if I’d missed out.” For the record, Strand ran a 15:57, good enough to take the Masters title and good enough to pace CherobonBawcom to the win. Kenyan Lilian Mariita took third with a 16:52 and Justyna Mudy, a native of Poland and recent Berry graduate, was third at 17:01. Cherobon-Bawcom, 32, noticed quickly she didn’t set up her watch correctly, but hoped she could rely on the timers on the course to keep her on pace. It wasn’t until she passed the 1mile marker, she began to get worried. “I kept thinking, ‘What am I running,’” she said. “It said 4:19, but that was totally off.” And then the one at the 2-mile mark was, too. That’s when she spotted the highlighter-yellow shirt of Strand up ahead and tracked him like a dog track rabbit. After gaining separation on Mariita — her only real competition — around the 2-mile mark, the win was hers; the
only thing she was running against was her old record. Cherobon-Bawcom said earlier this week she felt confident she could do it. She won last year’s event despite battling through a calf injury, which is healed now. In the past 12 months, she’s piled up wins in the Mercedes Half-Marathon (Feb.) and the Marine Corps Marathon (Oct.). “I had to take time off,” she said of the calf injury. “The face that I could actually train in the summer, it made a huge difference.” Among the top three finishers, Cherobon-Bawcom was the veteran of the elite trio. This was her third Woodstock in four years and her time has dropped in each race. In her first race in 2008, she clocked a 17:44, before breaking into the 16-minute mark after a year hiatus. She attributed her growing swiftness to training more than familiarity. “It’s not getting easier,” she said with a chuckle. “This course is always hard. It seems like it’s something new every year.” For Mariita, not only was the course new, but running in the sweltering Southern summer heat is a still new experience. Having only been in the United States since July 4th, the diminutive Mariita has ran only a handful of road races before the Woodstock. Before she left her native country, she was doing altitude training in drastically cooler climates. “It was OK,” said Mariita through an interpreter. “It was just the humidity and all. Where I train, it’s cold.” Despite the different elements, Mariita did manage to match her personal best in a 5K with Saturday’s finish. She said she was side-by-side with Cherobon-Bawcom 10:53 into the race. Mudy, the last of the podium finishers, was new to the course, too, despite attending school in nearby Rome, Ga. Shortly removed from a 10-week absence due to injury, she said she was thrilled with the event — and her time, which was a new personal record — and hoped to come back. But maybe with a training run worked in next time. “I only saw the course in a car,” she said. “It’s a lot different when you’re running it.” Bran Strickland is the sports editor for The Star. T hese shoes were made for running
Trent Penny/The Anniston Star
Footwear for Saturday’s Woodstock 5K ran the gamut. Even the latest trend, Vibrams (pictured right) were spotted in the crowd.
Fashion, fad or fitness, runners have strong opinions on shoes BY NICK BIRDSONG nbirdsong@annistonstar.com
Is it the shoes? That question posed by Mars Blackmon posed alongside NBA great Michael Jordan in the popular TV commercials of yesteryear. Of course, the footwear of his Airness wasn’t the ultimate catalyst for his capabilities on the court. However, the campaign was compelling enough to cause consumers to think, ‘Hey, maybe it helps.’ That glimmer of hope is what has driven folks to sport the airman logo for more than a quarter century. Companies take the same approach in the running shoe industry. Participants in Saturday’s 31st Annual Woodstock 5K had strong
opinions concerning shoe selection. Whether you rock a traditional running shoe made by Nike, Reebok or Adidas — the big three of the athletic apparel industry — or the latest in barefoot minimalist shoes, a relatively new trend, made by companies such as Vibram, one thing is certain: If you want a to get out and run, you’ve got to pick a quality pair of kicks. “We’ve been open 16 years. I’ve seen a lot of things come and go” said Scott Stand, a runner for the past 31 years and owner of the Trak Shak, a running shoe store with three locations in the Birmingham area. “Be it the Nike Shox or everyone else’s response to the Nike Shox like the Reebok Zigtechs you see now. “And a lot of that stuff is a gimmick It’s fashion-driven. Kids like them
because they look good. You won’t see a lot of advertisement for very good running shoes because the quality of the product sells the product.” Twelve-year old Dylan Fletcher of Gadsden put together an eye-popping colorway online for his Nikes. Add a matching purple jersey and the kid was living out the look-good, feelgood, play-good mantra. He turned a 24:08 despite only picking up the sport a couple months ago when his father, former Jacksonville State runner Perry Fletcher, decided to get back into running. “It was something different, and it’s a really good shoe,” he said. “It’s real comfortable. When you have them on, you feel lighter.” DePaul Henry completed the 3.1-mile course with a bristling time
of 19:20. His sneakers of choice? A pair of Nike SC Trainers he bought on a whim on a recent trip to Las Vegas. For the fit 31-year old who grew up in Atlanta, playing basketball and football, the clunky silhouette didn’t make much of a difference. “They’re heavier,” he admitted. “They’re probably meant for cross-training or basketball. They’re not great. I’d just say they’re fair. But the difference (in weight compared to running shoes) isn’t that much. It’s not like it’s a pound or something.” Please see shoes ❙ Page 6D

As the three mother-daughter tandems made their way around the Davis Avenue curve to the Rocky Hollow turn, they spotted an older woman walking the course in a bright green Woodstock shirt. Her knee and ankle appeared to buckle, and Michelle Butler showed her running form again. She caught up and walked alongside the woman through the turn onto Woodstock Avenue and into the home stretch. Assured the woman was OK, Butler

dropped back. The finish line came into view, and the gallery provided encouragement. “Looking good!” one woman told the designated last finishers. Indeed, Butler’s crew was looking good and feeling good after living the DLF’s creed — no runner left behind. Joe Medley is The Star’s sports columnist. Nothing could stop Dickert from Woodstock
Trent Penny/The Anniston Star
Runners take off in Saturday’s start to the Woodstock 5K, the Road Runners Club of America National Championship. Angela Dickert didn’t run the Woodstock 5K. She walked it, well most of it. She did break out a slow trot or two at the finish line “just for funnies,” she said. But she had an excuse for her slower place. She was a little more than two months removed from successful kidney surgery. “The doctor said the best way to build back up my strength and endurance was to walk, walk and walk,” Dickert said. “So, what better way to do that than to walk today?” On June 23rd, Dickert had a partial nephrectomy performed at Sloan-Kettering Memorial Cancer Center in New York. She made the trip to the facility in the Big Apple because its doctors have a reputation for being able to remove the cancerous portion of the kidney without removing the entire kidney. “They were able to retain 70 percent of my right kidney,” said Dickert. Though she always walked and did aerobics, she’d only been running for a little more than a year. After last year’s Woodstock, she ran in quite a few events, even garnering a second-place award in the Gamecock Gallop in Jacksonville. However, she began to have some lower back pains this spring and consulted a physician. They discovered the tumor after a series of MRIs. Luckily, it was contained to her kidney, meaning it wouldn’t require chemotherapy or radiation. “They didn’t attribute the problem with my kidney to running,” she said. “They said it might have been there for a while. I just so happened to start having lower back pain. If I hadn’t started running, I don’t know…” Her friends in the Anniston Runners Club were happy to see her as she arrived at the starting line. She only missed six weeks of work as a result of the ordeal, a fact she attributes to walking daily and setting her the goal to walk the Woodstock. She plans to get back to running at soon as she’s able. “I attribute my success in this to the prayers of so many people in this community and really all over she said. “I had so many people tell me they were praying for me. The margins were clean after the operation and doctor’s said there was no need for any further action. “God has blessed me.” • TIME FOR HER: After spending the past 45 days running for a cause, Lori Tippets took the chance to run for herself. The Jacksonville grandmother had just completed a run of 30 10Ks in 45 days. It was understandable, then, that her time in the Woodstock 5K — 26:26, second in her age group — was some 90 seconds off her normal pace. Tippets engaged this summer in a personal Strides for School campaign to raise public awareness for the needs of public
shoes Continued from Page 3D But for Alexis Crowe of Oxford and Rachel Dickinson of Prattville, less shoe is better. Both have invested in a pair of Vibram Five Fingers, an ultrathin shoe aimed at making runners feel as if they’re running barefoot. The shoes features individual slots for each toe, like a glove for the foot, forces users to run on the balls of their feet as opposed to their heels like traditional running shoes. “Usually, most people laugh when they first see you in them,” said Dickinson, who has run both road and trail races in them the past two years. “But they’re really comfortable. They have no weight to them. I forget I have
education in the state. “I just wanted to get them all done this summer before school started up,” she said. “It was a different city every day. I took a week off to go to Florida for a family reunion and then just crammed all of them in. “I ended last Wednesday. Now I’m running for myself to get my time back down again. This was slow for me today. I knew that my legs were gone. But I’ll be back.” She has qualified for the 2012 Boston Marathon. • COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE: Whether Calhoun County needed rain or not, at least one person was happy to see it start falling on Friday night. Women’s overall winner Janet Cherobon-Bawcom welcomed the wet stuff with open arms — and showed off a great big smile when asked about it. “It makes so much of a difference,” she said. Something did at least. She bested last year’s time by 26 seconds to set a new course record — the one she broke in 2010. For the record, it did help cool things off. As the starter’s gun went off, a weather app on a reporter’s phone told that it was 75 degrees with 88 percent humidity. • SILVER LINING: The AlabamaAuburn rivalry extends far beyond the football field. Elkanah Kibet may have been disappointed with the outcome of his Woodstock 5K, but he was able to take a little joy home from the course. All he had to do was look in his rear-view mirror. Kibet, a former Auburn runner, finished second overall at 14:26. He may not have won the race, but he finished ahead of an Alabama guy. Former Tide runner Emmanuel Bor was third, 27 seconds behind winner Reuben Mwei and 17 seconds behind Kibet. “That was good,” Kibet said with a laugh. “Anybody from Alabama, don’t let them go in front of you.” • DOING THEIR PART: They don’t keep stats on such things, but considering the impact the two events have on the local community, you would suspect some of the Woodstock 5K runners also played in the Sunny King Charity Classic. Ken Howell is one of them. He finds the events very similar — in purpose and excitement. “It’s a big fundraising event in town, just like the Sunny King,” said Howell, owner of Auto Custom Carpets. “And it’s one the whole community turns out for and people come in for from out of town.” Howell, 61, was hoping to cover the course in under 30 minutes Saturday and did — 29:27. • WHO’S IN CHARGE?: Anniston Mayor Gene Robinson addressed the 1,300-runner field before the start of the race and, according to those within earshot, couldn’t resist taking a shot at the
them on.” Neither has sustained injuries due to the lack of support, a common criticism of the shoes. In fact, Crowe said she only began to blister when she tried to go back to regular running shoes. But you’d better take it easy, if you to decide to own some. Barefoot shoes stress muscles not typically engaged when running in traditional shoes. Doing too much, too soon in them can cause some pretty bad soreness. Crowe and Dickinson said you should incrementally ease into longer runs once you purchase them. Crowe, a lifelong runner, has only been wearing the shoes for three months and has already seen increased muscle definition. “Everyone has been complimenting my calf muscles because
City Council. In his remarks, which were heard by several Anniston Star reporters, Robinson wondered aloud why anyone would hold a road race in Alabama in August when it’s so hot and, more pointedly, why anyone would repave 10th Street — the main artery from I-20 to the race site — during race week? “I can tell you one thing,” Robinson said. “It wasn’t the decision of David Dawson or Herbert Palmore or the Mayor.” He didn’t name the other two city council members — Ben Little and John Spain — but he made his point. • AWARDS, AWARDS, AWARDS: Woodstock 5K organizers had lots of accomplishments to recognize after Saturday’s 31st running, including two Road Runners Club of America national 5K champions and two new course records. None of those awards led off the postrace ceremony. That honor went to the Skyler Brady Heart of a Champion Award. A picture in front of the awards podium showed the late Skyler Brady, for whom the award was named, crossing the finish line during the 2009 Kidstock run. She died from complications related to Dandy-Walker Syndrome before the 2010 Woodstock. Brady also died just two days before cancer took custodial grandmother Teresa Brady, who is also in the picture, helping Skyler across the finish line in 2009. Woodstock recognized the first Skyler Brady Heart of a Champion winner in 2010, and it went to members of wheelchair Team Gower. Saturday, it went to Jacksonville’s Frank Bowie, whose vision has deteriorated because of atrophy of the optic nerve. He cannot drive. Bowie can run, and run he does. The assistant cross country coach at Jacksonville High School jogs early each morning along Alabama 21. He ran Saturday’s Woodstock. Despite a chest injury from a fall that cost him two weeks of training in July, he finished in 26 minutes and 34 seconds. • OLDEST, YOUNGEST: The oldest and youngest finishers from Saturday’s Woodstock 5K were 87-year-old Wilburn Smallwood, of Anniston, and 5-year-old Chloe Caroline Crosby, of Ashville. Smallwood, a long-time runner, finished in 53:34. Not only was he the seniormost finisher, but he won his age group of 75-over. “It went good,” he said. “Of course, it was hot, but it went good.” Crosby ran her second 5K, along with parents Brad and Sebrina Crosby and brother Corey. “I had a good race,” she said, holding her Woodstock bobblehead trophy. She won a medal in her other 5K. • FAMILY POWER: The Woodstock 5K isn’t a relay but three notable coaches in
before I didn’t have any,” Crowe said. The debate between traditional running shoes and barefoot minimalist is often polarizing. “You either love them,” Dickinson said. “Or you hate them.” But there is some compromise being made in the manufacturers. Vibram designed the sole for a new pair of New Balance running shoes. It’s a trend Strand said he sees bigger companies adopting — taking the best of both worlds and blending them into one sneaker. Trak Shak doesn’t carry Vibrams. Strand said he feels it’d be a wholehearted endorsement that all the research that has been done, involving biomechemanics by running shoe makers over the years, is wrong. That’s not a leap he’s prepared to make.
the area have passed the baton of running down to their children. Riley, Cooper and Ace Austin are the children of Spring Garden High coach Ricky and former Jacksonville State women’s hoops coach Dana Austin. Peyton McGinnis is the daughter of Lady Gamecocks softball coach Jana McGinnis, Dana’s twin sister. The quartet put on quite the performance at Saturday’s event. Ten-year-old Peyton ran the mile in 6:25 to place first overall in the girl’s division of the youth competition. Cooper set a record for 8-year-olds with his time of 6:05, breaking the previous mark by six seconds to finish second in his age group. Ricky and Dana’s 5-year-old daughter Ace was second in her division with a 9:11 mile. “It’s just something that Dana and I and her sister got into after our college days were over,” said Ricky, who played basketball at Southern Union Community College in the mid 80’s. “It’s just part of our daily routine, and our kids are just a product of their environment. “All three of our (him and Dana’s) kids have been running since they were in diapers. We’d finish our run, and they’d want to run too. So, we’d just them go as far as they wanted to. We never forced them into it. We just let them do what they do.” Maybe Ricky passed down his winning ways as well. The 46-year-old is former Woodstock 5K champion and a two-time runner-up. He’s guided the Lady Panthers to three Class 1A state titles in basketball, most recently in 2008. That same year, they won the state title in volleyball. Ricky’s still running, too. The 46-year-old is currently running 45-50 miles a week in preparation for a marathon he plans to compete in Chattanooga, Tenn., in November before basketball season starts. “I wasn’t really exposed to running until my college days were over,” Rick said. “We just needed something to turn to, something to fill that void. I’ve been running for 21 years. ... I can’t get away from it.” It doesn’t seem like his kids can either. “They even ran while we were on vacation,” he said. “They don’t run every day like we do, but they run about three to five days a week.” • CHARITABLE TEAMWORK: Two teams were recognized for bringing the most members, The Mommas and Pappas in the overall team category and The Depot Dazzlers in the company/church category. Mommas and Pappas brought 17 runners, and Depot Dazzlers brought 22. Each team won $500 toward a charity of their choice. Mommas and Pappas did not have any representatives at the award ceremony, but three Depot Dazzlers chose the Wounded Warrior Project as their charity.
“Look at all of the people who came in first, they were all wearing racing flats,” Strand said. He doesn’t discourage the use of barefoot shoes such as Vibrams altogether. But he doesn’t feel they should be anyone’s primary running shoe. It’s the same advice he gives runners about considering a pair of racing flats, which are typically used only in competitions. Though some handle wearing shoes with such a thin sole, it takes many as long as a year to get used to, Strand said. “We always say, minimalist shoe, minimal use.” Regardless of the brand or style you prefer, the goal of any quality running shoe is generally the same — a consistent neutral foot strike. Strand also said, if a person can afford it, it’s not bad to switch what types of shoes

you wear based on your workout goals — such as wearing a traditional pair of running shoes for regular runs, then going to a racing flat or barefoot shoe for speed or muscle training. Buy what you like, but you can’t purchase performance. Kelly Cosby shaved four minutes off her 5K time, finishing the course in 27 minutes Saturday after switching to pair of Adidas Climacools, the latest effort from the Italian company lightweight line. A runner of five years, she researched several options online before finally deciding on a pair. “It’s 100 percent mental,” she said. “The shoes play a small part. It’s mind over body.” Nick Birdsong covers prep sports for The Star. He can be reached 235-3575. Follow him on Twitter @birds_word.
