Decades of tradition at Griffin’s

Greater Talladega Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Jason Daves has identified four top priorities for the year: partnering for improved education, communicating with chamber members, thinking regionally and preparing for the economic impact of the Civilian Marksmanship Program. “The biggest thing, if I had to name the number one priority, would be to build a bridge between the schools and the business community,” Daves said. “The community needs a greater ownership of the School System.” The recent donation of $2,000 each from the Talladega City Council, First National Bank and Citizens Baptist Medical Center toward a nationwide search for the next superintendent of the Board of Education is a first step in this direction,” he said. “This is a critical time for the School System. Like I told the board, we are not educators and don’t pretend to be. But we do want to be there for the board in whatever way we can be.” He said that “to us, as a chamber, a strong education system is the key to trying to attract new businesses. We want to do a better job building
that bridge and getting the community behind them. We’ve seen our School System getting better over the last few years, and we want to see that continue, until we can say our system is the best, whether we’re talking about a three county or five county area, or in the whole state of Alabama. Education not only has a huge impact on business, but is also very important to real estate. People want to buy homes near the best schools, and even if they don’t have children, that helps increase the value of their property. So our top priority will be focusing on city education. Without that, we’re really limited in what else we can do.” As for the second priority, Daves said the weekly chamber newsletters will continue, with perhaps a monthly survey added. “We want to hear from our members,” he said. “We had some business development classes last year, but the attendance was not what we hoped. We had a class reporting, which I thought would be pretty important, and we had two businesses from Calhoun County and one from Talladega that signed up. So we need to do a better job finding out what they want. Lots of people write checks for their chamber membership and then don’t think about it anymore, but we really need their input.

We want to let them know they have a voice, but we can’t help them if we don’t know what they need.” In addition to Talladega, the chamber also covers Lincoln, Munford and the unincorporated areas in between, so regional thinking comes with the position. But Daves said he wants to expand beyond that, also. “The cities with the most success always have a regional mind set,” he said. We need to think about Talladega County as a whole and even into Calhoun County. When Lincoln gets a new business, that’s good for Talladega, also.” This line of thought ends in the development of the CMP, and the preparations for it’s opening. “The CMP is going to be drawing thousands of people per day for days at a time for national shooting events,” he said. “We have to look at developing a solid hotel base, among other things. We have to be prepared if we don’t want to be losing to Anniston, Oxford and Birmingham.

The trick is, and I don’t know what the answer to this is, but we need to find the chains that are already established in Anniston or Birmingham, that already have loyal clients, and entice them to set up shop here. That’s the million dollar question.”

Brides may choose a setting from dozens of those on display, and then select the stone they prefer to complete the ring, said Becky Griffin, one of Griffin’s certified bridal consultants. “We try and get to know our brides and families and that helps us to assist them in making their choices,” she said. “It’s important for us to provide all the information that they need to choose the designs and stones that they want.” While white diamonds remain popular, the offerings in chocolate and yellow diamonds have gained in popularity through the years, Becky Griffin said. These gems, along with many others, are among the stones offered in Griffin’s other fine jewelry selections, whether it’s traditional “dinner rings” and other accent pieces such as pendants, bracelets, earrings or pins. Diamonds are always a favorite, and another long standing jewelry tradition is pearls, which are as varied in size and color as diamonds are, Griffin said. “You just can’t go wrong with pearls, they are always in style, and always will be,” she said. Whether they’re of a pink or beige tone, white or any of the other shades pearls are available in, wearing pearls adds glamour to any wardrobe. and style, Griffin said. Another standard among jewelry traditions are cameos, and Griffin’s selection includes an array of colors and sizes with carvings of intricate detail that are made as pendants and earrings, pins and broaches. Cameos come in shades of blue and beige, ivory and pink, along with other colors to suit individual preference and style. One of the latest offerings in jewelry is what’s called travel jewelry, Griffin said, which is a way to be certain important pieces of jewelry won’t be lost or possibly stolen while traveling. The reasoning behind travel jewelry is that although it can be insured, and replaced, if the piece is sentimental, travel jewelry can be taken on trips to
wear without chancing the loss of a favorite. These pieces come in any and all styles, from tennis bracelets and rings and bangles to just about any accent needed to accessorize while away from home. The metal finishes are varied, along with stones, so the choices are just as varied as with the traditional fine jewelry selections. Yet another favorite that has been such for so many generations are the cross pendants and necklaces that Griffin’s keeps in its inventory. These come in styles from delicate to dramatic, and in designs made for more casual wear to the elegant, and express individual religious affiliations. They also are made in metals from silver to golds and
in colorful acrylics, too. Griffin’s is also a specialty destination for gifts of many other kinds, these also being items that are kept through the years and for generations to come. Fine china and more casual table ware are in great demand, and Griffin’s selections cover the choices of any need or function. Many lines of table ware are now made to combine in a variety of ways, from mixing up colors and shapes to using several patterns that coordinate. “It’s is really so much fun to work with the table designs,” Griffin said. “There are so many pretty designs made and so many ways to use them.” Griffin’s also has the flat ware to work into a table setting, including both silver and stainless, and glassware to finish off a place setting with flair and functionality. There are also ample offerings of serving pieces in silver and pewter like finishes, two of the store’s most popular lines are from Arthur Court and Beatriz Ball. These are “no polish required” pieces that are made to suit every serving need, from breads and desserts to anything in-between. Watches are also on the list of traditions for Griffin’s, and now more than ever the designs are diverse for both men’s and women’s styles. From glitzy and glamorous for dress pieces to sporty and spiffy for more casual wear, Griffin’s watch cases are filled with the timepieces to please for any and all lifestyles. Griffin’s stores include full service repair for all jewelry and also in-house jewelry designers who work with customers to create their own pieces, or to recreate jewelry using stones or other elements from existing pieces of jewelry.

Shoppers in Talladega now have a chance to get a great deal on lightly used clothing and household items while at the same time helping some of the neediest people in the world. Four Corners Ministries currently operates two thrift stores in Alabama and is building a center in Uganda for some of the many orphans in need of help in that country. Four Corners Ministries marked its 10th anniversary last year. Founded by two men from Wadley, Paul Wilson and Jimmy Sprayberry, ministry is focused on sharing the love of Christ in South Sudan and Uganda through a multi-faceted approach. In addition to the orphanage, work is being done to provide an education for leaders in the region, open up markets for hand-crafted jewelry and handbags and address problems with access to water. Bi-vocational pastor Tripp Skipper currently serves as president of the ministry. The Four Corners Thrift Store in Talladega’s Northgate Plaza on Alabama 77 opened last year. Jeannene Keet manages operations of both the Talladega store and the FCM’s original store in Roanoke, with five employees at the Talladega
store. First-time customers are typically pleasantly surprised when they visit the store. Store associate Carolyn Abernathy said employees take pride in keeping the store neat and clean, and they are very picky about what goes on the floor for sale. “If a piece of clothing has a stain on it, or a button missing, we don’t put it out,” she said. “It almost looks more like a consignment shop than a thrift store. Everyone has been pleased with the buys they get and the quality of the merchandise.” “Some of our donations come to us from a consignment shop,” Keet said. “It’s good shopping for the community and it’s good for the ministry.” Pricing on clothing items typically ranges from 99 cents to $6.99. Every week there is something on sale for half price, and the store even has a reward program. When a customer spends $50, he or she gets $6 off the next purchase. There is no time limit, and the store keeps up with the spending level. Sometimes the store gets unexpected donations of overstocked new merchandise. The last pair of new Georgia brand boots was recently sold for $39.99. They retail for over $100 a pair. New items are

put on the floor every day, and some customers browse the aisles just about every day to see what they might find. As a non-profit ministry, it’s also good for those who have new or gently used items they want to donate at the store. Books, CDs, DVDs, clothing, electronics, housewares, seasonal items and shoes are welcome, and receipts are given for donors who need them for a break on their income tax. The stores have some new furniture for sale, and they also have some of the jewelry and handbags made by women in Uganda. Part of the ministry is in offering work opportunities. Necklaces, bracelets and earrings are made, many of them using handmade beads. The beads are typically crafted from colorful paper, something you wouldn’t guess by looking at them. to spread the Gospel of Christ by demonstrating unconditional love and by building relationships to serve orphans and families in Africa. A couple from Alabama is in Uganda now for the construction of the Abaana’s Hope village to minister to orphans. There are an estimated 60 million orphans in Africa, and three million in Uganda. Four Corners hopes to give some of them a better life. Abaana is an African word for children. Chase Barbrey of Decatur and Kimmey Barbrey, originally from Enterprise, were married just over a year ago, and are excited to begin their lives together serving in Gulu, Uganda. Four Corners also organizes trips for individuals who want to be a part of making person-to-person contact in a Christian mission setting. Gardens of Talladega good alternative for seniors

If you drive to 130 Season’s Way, you’ll find a bright yellow house trimmed in white, with swings and rocking chairs on the front porch, you’ll know you have arrived at the Gardens of Talladega. This is home to 32 seniors, some independent and some requiring assistance. Another part of the facility is located to the rear, at 150 Season’s Way. Owned

ated by Great Oaks Management L.L. C. of Montgomery, Sandra C. Morgan, A.L.A., is administrator, and there are 30 apartments and two suites. Each resident has a nice living area, with large closet, bath and shower. Residents of Gardens of Talladega enjoy three hot, home cooked meals each day, plus morning and afternoon snacks. Activities director Teresa Wideman keeps the residents’ calendars filled with activities such
as games, crafts, puzzles, social gatherings and special outings. A garden is planned for the spring and residents will be encouraged to participate in its planting, care and harvesting. One evening each week is “Movie Night,” complete with dinner and popcorn, and Sunday is devoted to worship and Bible study. Two more Bible study periods are available during the week. All mail, papers and magazines are delivered
to each resident, and an on-site beautician is available weekly. A podiatrist visits the facility every two months, and there’s a medical director on call at all times. Residents are provided with full laundry service, which includes freshly pressed garments, and rooms are cleaned weekly. The entire staff of Gardens of Talladega is trained in CPR and is “disaster trained,” which includes fire drills once a month.

Hartselle, selling new cars. In 1968, he and his wife, Rona, moved to Talladega with their two daughters, Lynne and Leigh. The Preuitts opened their own new car business and she was office manager. Preuitt combined his car dealership with a career in politics for 28 years. He began as a state representative in 1982, and was elected to the state Senate in 1986. On the county level of government, he was probate judge and chairman of the Talladega County Commission for three years. During that time, he and his wife spent a lot of their “off time” landscaping areas around the courthouse, and he also concentrated on overseeing cleaning and repairing areas inside the courthouse.

“I think I may get old enough to retire one of these days,” he said. The dealership celebrates its 46th anniversary at the end of February and an anniversary sale is planned.

Aspiring local artists looking to spread their music’s scope of influence have an outlet for doing so on the the square in Talladega. Ruff Pro Records and Entertainment, located at 101 Court Square North and operated by DieDra
and Keith Ruff, provides assistance with artist development as well as production of CDs and singles for bands or individual artists. The record label and recording studio is open doors from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, but sometimes their schedule permits them to work on a project on a Saturday. “It depends on if
someone needs us on the weekend if we’re in town, because we are traveling musicians ourselves,” Ruff said. “If we are in town, we do schedule people for Saturdays.” Ruff explained the concept of artist development and how the studio helps prepare each artist. “If an artist comes in and they don’t really have

A lot of times you get lucky. Your music could very well end up showing up anywhere. You have no idea what kind of effect your music might have on people.” Having recently competed in the 2014 International Blues Challenge competition in Memphis, Tenn., and placing ninth in the world as a blues band, the Ruffs contended their showing at the international level lends credibility to their musical aptitude and abil-

There’s a “Dollar Zone” at both stores and this area has become very popular. It is stocked with a variety of crackers, cookies, canned goods, condiments, nuts, spices, candies and paper products. Every item in this area has a $1 price on it. There’s even a special section of the Dollar Zone devoted to cosmetics and personal care products. There are first aid items and a few medical items.
