Hospital board increases time off Long-term employees will now receive an extra 10 vacation days per year

The Cleburne County Hospital Board approved a number of allocations for Cleburne County Emergency Medical Service Tuesday, including an increase in time off for long-term employees.

The board’s auditor, Bart McCurley of Self, Maples and Copeland P.C., told the board that although EMS was in the red for about $124,000 last year, that loss was $95,000 less than the year before.

The board, which oversees the Cleburne County Nursing Home and EMS, thanked Director Tracy Lambert for his efforts to cut costs; board members said they offered

the increase in time off as a thank you to employees for their loyalty.

Employees who have been with the service for 15 years or more get six and one-third days off each year right now, Lambert said. Tuesday’s vote gives those employees 10 vacation days a year. The money spent for additional vacation pay would be offset by savings in overtime pay, he said.

When Lambert first took over as director, he and the board cut vacation days for employees, he said.

“If you’ve been here 15 years and since we don’t have retirement, it would be good to give you 10 working days off a year,” Lambert said.

The employees work a 24-hour shift, so the change would take them from 160 hours of vacation time each year to 240 hours, Lambert said.

The change would affect three or four employees, he said.

The board unanimously approved the change. The board also approved allowing Lambert to buy five new handheld radios with batteries and chargers for up to $3,500 and a new treadmill for the exercise room for up to $1,000. The money will come out of the EMS operating funds.

In other business the board: — Heard that the nursing home had an operating income of $153,000.

— Heard a recommendation from its

auditor, Bart McCurley, that it work to decrease indirect expenses such as activities, housekeeping and social service costs in the nursing home to increase its Medicaid reimbursement rate. On average, the nursing home spends $10 more on indirect expenses per patient than Medicaid will reimburse, he said.

— Approved appointing board member Patrick Nolen to the EMS Committee.

— Heard that EMS will be shopping around for health insurance after the current company increased the cost.

The next meeting will be April 15 at 5:30 p.m.

Wind farm regulations dominates commission meeting LAURA CAMPER

Cleburne County resident Carolyn Doggett said she worried when she heard about the possibility of a wind turbine farm near Turkey Heaven Mountain, not far from her property.

She said she felt better when she heard the Alabama Senate this year passed a bill setting up an application process through the Public Service Commission for the wind farms as well as establishing a minimum distance the farms must be from neighboring properties — five times the height of the tower to the property line.

But then Doggett discovered Cleburne County was excluded from those regulations. She said she called her state senator, Gerald Dial, to find out why.

“He said to me, ‘Because your officials came down here and told us that’s what they wanted and that’s what the county wants,’” Dogn See Commission page 2

A sea of green flooded Coleman Street in front of the Heflin Recreation Center Saturday morning as participants in the Strides of March 5K, many in their green race T-shirts, lined up for the race’s start.

A record number of people, 254, ran in Heflin’s ninth 5,000-meter race and fun run on Saturday.

The race, which this year will benefit Heflin’s Parks and Recreation Department programs, is a St. Patrick’s weekend tradition held in conjunction with the St. Pawtrick’s Day Pet Parade. The runners were there for a number of reasons -- from the thrill of competition to a quest to lose weight to the chance to support a good cause.

But from the laughter and joking rising from the crowd, most of them were having some St. Paddy’s Day fun.

“It feels like St. Patrick’s, with all

the green,” said Tonya Austin, who was there to run with some co-workers from Mount Cheaha Dental.

Hayley Long of Oxford is a member of the Atlanta Track Club Competition Team at the master’s/over 40 level. Three years ago, she was the female winner of the race. Long said she does one or two 5k events each month. However, there are so many races scheduled every month that she has to pick and choose which ones to run. She came back to Heflin this year

“It’s very challenging, but it’s fun,” Long said. “It’s very hilly…The scenery around the lake is very nice. It’s easy to relax.”

Drug bust in Hollis Heflin Highlights by: Suzanne Payne

The search of a Hollis Crossroads home

by Cleburne County deputies and Heflin police officers led to the arrest of four people on drug charges Friday, a Cleburne County deputy said.

Narcotics Investigator Lance Willingham said Christian Marie Parrish, 40, and Carolyn Jewel Wright, 29, both Heflin residents, were charged with two counts of felony possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor counts of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, including pipes, scales and rolling papers.

Richie Scott Marks, 47, of Heflin was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and felony possession of drug paraphernalia including a can of Coleman fuel and a bag of fertilizer. The

fertilizer and fuel can be used in the production of methamphetamine, leading to the felony charge, Willingham said.

In addition, William Roy Marks, 69, of Carrollton, Ga., was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

The senior Marks, Richie Scott Marks’ father, was visiting the home, Willingham said.

The officers had sought a search warrant because they had received information that drugs were being sold at the location on the 8000 block of U.S. 431, said Chief Deputy Dennis Green. From the items found in the home, the officers believe the residents were making methamphetamine, Willingham said. Wright and both Marks men were still in Cleburne County Jail on Monday afternoon. Parrish was released on 6 - $6,000 bonds and 2 $15,000 bonds.

gett told the County Commission during its meeting Monday. “I’m here to tell you that 99.9 percent of the county has no clue about what’s going on.”

These kinds of decisions shouldn’t happen until the residents are informed and educated about the benefits and the risks, Doggett said.

Doggett’s comments came as Ranburne resident Fred Kitchens spoke to the commission in favor of the project, planned by California-based Terra-Gen Power. Kitchens has contacted Doggett as well as other local residents and officials about the project.

There are only four residences in the area near the proposed windmill farm and the closest home to a proposed turbine is almost a mile away, he said.

But the farm would bring jobs – about 300 during construction and eight to 10 well-paying permanent jobs once the farm was operational, Kitchens said.

“This is clean energy,” Kitchens said. “It’s environmentally friendly.”

Efforts to reach Dial for comment were unsuccessful Monday.

Ryan Robertson, chairman of the commission, said he did introduce Kitchens to the individual commissioners as well as to Dial. But Roberston said he only gave Dial his individual opinion in favor of the exclusion. Robertson said he didn’t speak on behalf of the county.

“Dial made the decision for his constituents,” Robertson said.

County Administrator Steve Swafford, who was also at the meeting with Dial, agreed with Robertson.

Commissioner Laura Cobb said the issue was never discussed in a commission meeting. She said she only found out about it when she ran into one of the Terra-Gen representatives, Cobb said.

Commissioner Emmett Owen said he had spoken to some people about the wind farm and asked them to come to a commission meeting to talk about it in public.

“I think it should have had the backing of a resolution,” Owen said. “I think if they’re pushing legislation or an agenda, as far as the commission is concerned, it needs to start here.”

The legislation was unexpected, Kitchens said.

Swafford said the legislation’s regulations were so restrictive that if passed, a wind farm would never be built in Alabama. He noted minimum distance requirements for the farms as an example.

Kitchens said that using measurements from the American Wind Energy Association, the average height of a wind turbine would be 140 meters.

Five times that would be 2,296.6 feet — less that the mile the farm is estimated to be from nearest residence.

Kitchens added that the company has a self-imposed setback of 1,000 feet from any residence. He didn’t specify whether that was from the property line or the house itself. Kitchens told the commissioners the county needs to attract new industry and the wind farm would help.

“Almost everybody that has a good job in Cleburne County has to travel someplace else,” Kitchens said.

“We now have an opportunity to attract $200 million in private capital to be invested on 100 percent private land in a semi-wilderness area, Turkey Heaven Mountain.”

Robertson said the House of Representatives was having a hearing on the bill on Wednesday and that he had been invited to attend. He asked the commissioners if they would like him to repre-

sent the county and speak in favor of excluding the county in the legislation.

The commissioners voted unanimously to allow him to speak for them in favor of the exclusion.

In other business the commission: — Approved providing up to $1,500 in materials for the Cleburne County Search and Rescue to build a wall in the facility they will be sharing with the Cleburne County Board of Education. The wall will separate school property from the Search and Rescue equipment.

— Approved allocating $4,319.15 to the Ranburne schools for fence screening and sports seating for the school facilities.

— Approved hiring Forsyth Construction as construction manager for replacing the windows in the County Courthouse.

As construction manager the company would be responsible for reviewing architectural plans, managing the bidding process, holding the preconstruction meeting, inspecting the project twice a week, doing the final inspection and closing out the project.

The county will pay Forsyth $8,800 for the work.

— Approved starting the process to vacate a portion of County Road 62 from the present Cameron West/Charles Myers property line, east to the intersection with County Road 457. The hearing on the issue will be April 21.

— Approved 3-1 a special event liquor license for Hollis Crossroads Volunteer Fire and Rescue for a fundraiser in May at Ross Mountain Adventures. The money raised will go toward construction of a new facility, said Chief Dan Hopkins. Commissioner Bobby Brooks voted no.

A free program serving children through age 5 and pregnant women is scheduled to begin in Cleburne and Calhoun counties in April or May, according to representatives of the program.

Parents as Teachers has been operating in the United States for about 30 years, they said, including some parts of Alabama.

A grant awarded in December by the Alabama Department of Children’s Affairs will allow the Talladega Clay Randolph Child Care Corporation, a Talladega-based nonprofit, to expand the program into Calhoun, Cleburne and Cherokee counties, said Lakeeshia Sandlin, program supervisor.

The program works with different agencies in the respective counties to help teen parents, children and parents with disabilities, low-income, low-education, military and immigrant families, as well as families at risk for domestic or substance abuse, Sandlin said.

“The vision is all children will learn, grow and develop to realize their full potential,” she said.

The program can start working with families at the start of a pregnancy and up until children turn 5 years old, she said.

Certified parent educators will serve 20 families in each county the first year and 24 families in each county the second year, said Meredith McClendon, one of two parent educators who will work in Cleburne County.

McClendon is training for her certification and plans to ask local agencies such as the Cleburne Baptist Association, the

Department of Human Resources, the Cleburne County Board of Education and local high schools if they would be willing to work with the program, she said.

On Tuesday, she approached the Heflin City Council during a meeting about working with a task force for the program.

The program calls for monthly home visits and group meetings, health and developmental screenings for children and resource networking, McClendon told the council members. The program targets families with young children and first time parents because they may be most in need of the education the program provides, she said.

“We’re not only there for that child, but we’re also there for that mom or dad who is struggling,” McClendon said.

The program also will gather data for the University of Alabama at Birmingham, which will use the information to determine what approaches are working to help families succeed, she said.

The Circle of Care Center for Families in Valley has been offering the program since 1997, said Director Gloria Hull. It was one of the first programs the center offered and is still “one of the most well-received and most appreciated services,” Hull said.

“It is strictly a voluntary program,” Hull said.

“And some of our parents who start during pregnancy are really reluctant to leave after the 36-month or 60-month mark.”

One sign of the pro-

gram’s success is that the center’s greatest source of referrals is from people who have been in the program, she said.

One of the strengths of the program is the “wraparound” service it provides, Hull said. The program, she explained, networks within the community and identifies services available to participants from many different agencies. That allows parent educators to help families far beyond the resources of the program, Hull said.

A study published by the Parents as Teachers National Center in April 2007, notes that the program, along with preschool, seems to lower the school-performance gap between low-income and more affluent children.

The study, which looked at Missouri children, found that 82 percent of those who participated with high intensity in the program and attended preschool came to kindergarten ready to learn, compared to 64 percent of their low-income peers who hadn’t participated in either. That is nearly identical to the 81 percent of their more affluent peers who entered kindergarten ready to learn.

Program participants who also attend preschool also performed better on standardized tests, the study found.

OPINION/EDITORIAL It has always been about name identification

A while back I wrote a column entitled, “The State Legislature Is A Good Training Ground For Governor, But Not A Good Stepping Stone To Governor.” The essence of my hypothesis was being one of the 105 members of the House of Representatives or even one of the 35 members of the State Senate does not lend itself to building name identification, which is essential to election to statewide office.

The perfect example in support of this argument occurred several years ago when Covington County State Representative Seth Hammett was Speaker of the House. Seth contemplated a race for governor. The position of Speaker of the House of Representatives is probably the second most powerful position in state government. Seth had served 20 years in the House and had garnered unfathomable knowledge of the machinations of state government. He was immensely popular and universally known in his home district.

One of the first steps when seeking a major statewide office is to conduct what is called a benchmark poll.

This poll measures how well you are known statewide.

Seth’s name identification was only 3 percent. If the Speaker of the House has three percent name identification, what do you think a backbencher from Wedowee’s would register? Seth decided against making the race.

The current Speaker, Mike Hubbard, would more than likely have less than 10 percent name identification and half of his name identification would be attributed to people confusing him with legendary AEA lobbyist Dr. Paul Hubbert.

A similar scenario occurred decades ago when then Senator, now lobbyist John Teague decided that as Pro

Tem of the State Senate he should naturally ascend to lieutenant governor.

Steve proceeded with Flowers He the mandatory benchmark pole. Like Seth, Teague came back with the same single digit result. His Inside The Statehouse pollster candidly told him, “John, it is even worse than you think.

Probably over half of your 6 percent name identification belongs to State School Superintendent Wayne Teague.”

John continued on and ran for lieutenant governor anyway but was swamped by Jim Folsom, Jr., who had inherited statewide name identification from his legendary father Big Jim Folsom.

The funniest story of this name identification game occurred several decades ago when my friend Mac McArthur launched into a foray to run for Attorney General of Alabama. Mac has headed the Alabama State Employees Association for close to 20 years. Mac has been around politics all of his life. He grew up in the Wiregrass and was a protégé of Bill Baxley. Mac wanted to follow his mentor, Baxley, and become a trailblazing state prosecutor. Mac had been a district attorney and was currently the head of the State Ethics Commission.

In that capacity he had garnered some state press so he figured that would translate into name identification.

Mac proceeded with his initial name identification poll. The legendary political guru, Joe Perkins, had

taken Mac on as his client. Joe called Mac to come over and get his results. Perkins, who has managed many of the successful races for statewide offices over the years, knew from past experience that initial name identification for state aspirants could be very low. Perkins met Mac excitedly and said, “Mac, I have some good news for you.” Joe then revealed that Mac had 5 percent favorable statewide name identification.

Mac slowly looked at his counselor and said, “Joe, the only thing I see good about that is that I can run naked through Winn-Dixie and nobody will know who I am.”

The general rule that the legislature is not a good steppingstone to statewide office may be changing in modern times. Our current Governor, Robert Bentley, ascended to the governorship from the legislature. He was the first governor in this century to move directly from the legislature to the Governor’s office.

One reason why this may change in future years is the tremendous amount of money that incumbent state representatives and especially state senators are raising and stockpiling. There are several state senators who have amassed $400,000 to $500,000 war chests. That is a good start towards a statewide race. In addition, a powerful state senator is building an entrenched relationship with special interest groups and lobbyists who are the primary resources for funding a race for governor, lieutenant governor or attorney general.

We will see.

Oak Level future home for Alexander’s Challenge Point This week I met with Larry Alexander, Program Director of Challenge Point, a non-profit, Christian organization that teaches teamwork and leadership skills through the use of adventure-based activities.

After 15 years of being a mobile program, Challenge Point has come to Oak Level in Cleburne County to develop a home base. In the interim, Alexander, 42, will continue to travel, from time to time, throughout the Southeast as he provides retreats and backpacking treks to hundreds of teens and adults annually, “It is a great centralized location for all the groups we work with on a regular basis,” said Alexander.

“Beyond that, the close proximity to Talladega National Forest, the Pinhoti Trail, and the Chief Ladiga Trail provides a wealth of potential for future adventures.”

Alexander knows a few things about adventure, having hiked the 2,175 mile Appalachian Trail in 2006, the 2,668 mile Pacific Crest Trail in 2012, and several international hikes throughout eleven countries.

With all those miles behind him, he considers himself, first and foremost, a group-dynamics counselor and, second, a guide.

“We work with any group that has a purpose and a will to become better. In the past we have worked with churches, mission trip groups, Scouts, marching

bands, college sports teams, social clubs, corporations, Boys & Girls clubs, Sherry environmental councils, and Kughn schools.”

Whether it is a one-day workshop or a weekend Sherry-Go-Round retreat, Challenge Point uses group challenges and teambuilding activities to teach communication, cooperation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills within the group.

He became interested in this field when, at the age of 14, he had to undergo brain surgery to remove a tumor.

Afterwards, his learning process became dependent on experience. “I had to do it to learn it. Later on, while attending Lipscomb University in Nashville, I did an internship at a treatment center for juveniles.

It was there that I was introduced to adventure-based counseling. Watching people learn through experience was something I could relate to.”

Alexander continued to use adventure-based counseling while working in Tennessee at schools,

treatment centers, and a juvenile prison. During that time, he had several youth ministers and other leaders ask him to work with their groups. In 1998, he created Challenge Point as a fun weekend business; but, as word spread, it became more.

“I believe there are 14 states that we work in regularly, and as much fun as I’ve had traveling and meeting people, I’m excited about this next step in Challenge Point’s journey. Having a permanent base will help to expand our program in ways I’ve only dreamed.”

In the next two years, Alexander hopes to develop phase one of their plan, which includes several challenge-course elements, along with a green-energy, eco-friendly encampment similar to ones he has stayed in while traveling through Central and South America.

“As we get things developed here in Oak Level, I look forward to working with local churches, community organizations, schools, and businesses.”

Alexander, a native of Jasper, has also written three books, “Through Hiker’s Eyes – A Journey Along the Appalachian Trail” (parts one and two) and “People 101- Getting an A in Relationships.”

How does government control us? Let’s look at just seven areas: healthcare, poverty and welfare, debt, gun control, education, religion, and class warfare.

The Affordable Care Act has been a dismal failure.

Promising to provide affordable insurance for 30 to 45 million Americans without coverage, ACA has caused cancellation of more than 6.2 million policies so far. Yes, ACA has made millions more eligible for Medicaid, but still the number of uninsured Americans has remained about the same.

The all-powerful federal government will protect us from tyranny of big corporations and other unfair entities?

Which could possibly be worse: tyranny of Washington,

or tyranny of ‘unfair’ entities. Government controls fairness.

Americans are supposed to have a separation of church and state, right? Actually, Jefferson first used the term ‘wall’ of separation between church and state to advocate for the church (Danbury Baptists) to be free from oppression of local government. Washington has targeted Christians as dozens of court cases attest today. How many cases of Muslims suing the state for freedom of religion? None that I know of. Government is suppressing Christianity.

Government fosters class warfare. I thought there was not a red America or a blue America, but the United States of America? Now all I hear coming out of Washington is drivel about the haves and have not’s, and the need to reduce the income inequality gap.

Government controls us by dividing us against ourselves.

We are no longer the United States of America. We have become the United Socialist States of America.

Welcome to the USSA! And, by the way, to maintain this socialist state, please continue to reelect incumbents of both parties. No change in representation in Washington means no change in how Washington controls those it governs.

Tigers Classic softball starts Friday RIP DONOVAN

Cleburne County hosts its Tiger Classic softball tournament Friday and Saturday at Anniston’s McClellan sports complex. The Tigers play Jacksonville Friday at 4:30 p.m. They meet Ranburne at 6 p.m. then pack it in as Saturday is prom day at Cleburne County.

Wellborn, Leeds and Horseshoe Bend are also playing in the varsity division of the tournament and four junior varsity teams make up another bracket.

In Cleburne County’s only game over the past week, Oxford defeated the Tigers 11-1 at Oxford Tuesday.

Kiara Akles scored the only run. She walked and Kaity

Zeiders’ sacrifice bunt advanced her to second base.

Bailey Beam lined a single up the middle to score Akles.

Beam, Akles and Hannah Gossage each had a single for the only Cleburne County hits.

“We put the ball in play but it was either a pop up or straight to somebody,” said Tigers’ coach Ron Ervin.

Cleburne County is scheduled to host area opponent Lincoln today. Ervin said Wednesday afternoon that he planned to make every effort to have Tiger Field playable today. If he is unable to get the field in playing shape, today’s game may move to Lincoln with Jonathan Fordham the Golden Bears coming to Kiara Akles on the mound for Cleburne County. Kiara scored only run against Oxford on Tuesday.

Lady Bulldogs show signs of improvement RIP DONOVAN

There were signs of continued improvement for the Ranburne softball team in Tuesday’s 16-5 loss at Ohatchee. Trailing 9-1 after three innings, the Bulldogs rallied for four runs in the top of the fourth.

With one out, Morgan Calhoun singled and Taylor Crosson walked. Calhoun was

forced out when Jessi Calvert hit into a fielder’s choice. Indiana Morgan followed with a single to load the bases. Erica Taylor’s single scored Crosson. Lora Mobley followed Taylor with a three-run triple over the head of the Ohatchee leftfielder.

Ranburne’s initial run came in the second inning when Calhoun doubled with one out and Calvert came through with a two-out RBI single.

“The effort was good last night,” Bull-

dogs coach Terrell Mobley said Wednesday morning. “We just didn’t put anything together when we needed to. … We just couldn’t put any hits back-to-back except for that one inning.”

Taylor and Calhoun each had two singles in three official at-bats. Mobley’s triple and singles by Calvert and Morgan were the other hits for the Bulldogs but Mobley noted his players hit the ball sharply at others times, just directly at

Ohatchee fielders.

“They did a good job, better defense, better all-around effort,” Mobley said of the Ohatchee contest.

Ranburne plays Friday and Saturday in a tournament hosted by Cleburne County High School at Anniston’s youth sport complex on the former Fort McClellan property. In pool play, the Bulldogs meet the host Tigers Friday at 6 p.m. Ranburne and Leeds play Saturday at 9 a.m.

Holding a slim one-run lead as they came to bat in the home half of the sixth inning, the Cleburne County Tigers sent 11 batters to the plate, scored nine times and earned a 15-5 mercy-rule win over visiting Randolph County Tuesday in a battle of Tigers. Cleburne County had six hits and benefitted from a hit batsman and two Randolph County errors in the big inning. Cleburne County had 13 hits overall against a team that reached the Class 2A semifinals last year and returned its solid young pitching staff.

“We saw three of them last night and they were all pretty good,” Cleburne County coach Vaughn Lee said Wednesday morning. “To beat pitching like that and to score runs like that was big.”

The score was 5-5 after four innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, Cole Corkren fell behind 0-2 then worked a walk. Ross Price’s sacrifice bunt moved Corken to second and Matthew Shortt lined a twoout RBI single to centerfield, scoring Corkren with the go-ahead run.

The sixth started quietly with a fly ball out to center then Anderson Jacks reached on an infield error and Austin Harler singled. With runners on second and first, Brady Padgett delivered an RBI single that scored Jacks. Damion Benefield entered to run for Padgett before Tyler Berry reached on an error to load the bases.

Corkren singled sharply to left, scoring Harler. With the sacks full again, Price’s two-run single scored Benefield and Berry. Shortt was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the third time in the inning.

Jeremiah Blake ran Shortt and Trey Bolton ripped an RBI single to left to score Corkren. When the fielder misplayed Bolton’s ball, Price and Blake also scored and Bolton advanced to third. McCain Carlile’s sacrifice fly scored Bolton to increase Cleburne County’s lead to 14-5 and Jacks ended the game with a home run to left.

Looking for “mental toughness” in the

lower half of his batting order, Lee moved seniors Price, Shortt and Bolton to the 6, 7 and 8 holes in the order and said the three responded by “coming up big for us.”

“They’re not great hitters but they’re doing their jobs, finding a way to get it done,” Lee added.

In preparation for today’s Class 4A, Area 10 home game against Munford, Lee entered the Randolph County game intending to give a number of his pitchers some work and did. Garrett Cheatwood tossed the first three innings and allowed all five runs. Carlile worked the fourth and struck out all three batters he faced. Max Watson issued one walk in facing four batters. In the top of the sixth, Padgett had a perfect inning, fanning three.

Corkren was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. He scored three times. Price was 2-for-2 and had four RBIs. His tworun double to right was the big blow in Cleburne County’s four-run first inning.

Harler and Padgett each had two singles.

Jacks scored three runs, Harler two and Berry two.

On Saturday, the Tigers found themselves on the wrong end of the 10-run rule, losing at Piedmont 12-2 in six innings. Usually solid on defense, Cleburne County made five errors. Price walked and scored in the second on Max Watson RBI groundout after Shortt singled. Harler opened the third with a walk, stole second and came home on Corkren’s single to left.

“Other than Saturday night, we’ve played as good a defense as I’ve ever had,” Lee noted. “We’ve made about every play. … When we went to Centre the other night, we played extremely well defensively.”

At Centre Friday, Cleburne County rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning then held off the Cherokee County Warriors for a 7-6 victory. The score was 4-4 after seven innings.

Shortt opened the eighth with a base hit.

Bolton entered to run for him and stole second then moved to third on Blake’s sacrifice bunt. Benefield’s RBI single sent Bolton home with the go-ahead run but the Tigers weren’t finished. Jacks and Harler walked, loading the bases, and Padgett singled to score Benefield. Jacks come

home on a wild pitch for the third run of the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Warriors scored two unearned runs and had the tying run on third when Bolton snagged a fly ball to left for the final out. Berry was the winner in relief. He got the final two outs of the sixth then finished the game, striking out three. Watson had five strikeouts in five innings.

Padgett had two singles and two RBIs. Jacks singled twice, drove in a run and scored two times. Berry had a base hit, an RBI and scored once.

Cleburne County opened Area 10 play on Thursday of last week against Anniston with a 13-1 win in five innings. The Tigers had 11 hits, 10 singles and Blake’s double. In all, 17 players got to the plate at least once for Cleburne County. Berry and Harler had three hits apiece. Harler drove in three runs. Watson had two RBIs. Berry, Corkren, Blake and Padgett each had one RBI. Jacks scored three run and Josh Davis scored twice. Price, Bolton, Berry, Watson, Blake, Skye Jarrell, Chad Brown and Mario Smith each scored once for the Tigers.

Our guest youth speaker was Michael Moore a Junior at Oxford High School. He delivered a great message mixed with his testimony. Several friends came to support him. Michael spoke on “Painting a Picture of Christ” and used several scripture passages to make his point. But imagine if the way we live our life were painting a picture. What would your picture reveal? A life devoted to living like Christ or a life that is headed down the wrong path? Would there be dark colors of anger and ridicule as mentioned in Matthew 5:21-21 or bright colors of joy and patience as spoken of in James 1:2-4!

Maybe you need to change some colors on your painting. Consider if you live your life so that others can see Jesus in you? No we are not perfect but we are to strive to be like Christ! When we stand before the Judgement will God be proud of us or will He have to point out a multitude of failures?

2 Corinthians 5:9,10 says we are to “make it our aim... to be well pleasing to Him(God).

Michael said high school is a mission field. He and his friends try to live in front of their classmates in a way that they paint a picture of Jesus. He knows they make mistakes and fail sometimes but he knows they can make a difference by painting the right picture.

In Psalm 1:1-3 we read the descripition of a happy man (or woman) who strives for righteousness through Christ but is unaffected by the wickedness of the world. They meditate on God’s Word day and night. They are like a tree planted by the water that is unmovable. They are firm in what they believe. Because of this life style the Bible says “And whatever he does shall prosper.” This is the picture we should be painting every day!

Continue to pray for those who are unable to attend church but would love to do so! Don’t you feel guilty you were able to attend church but just didn’t for no real reason at all!?

Faith without works is dead. James says your saved life show it because of your living faith. Not everyone who says Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven. It takes life to live! Faith is the same. Their spiritless, still, and they’re stinking because they are spiritually dead!

You don’t want to be around them. They are without love and without Lordship. You should never have trouble obeying God. Is your faith demonic? Satan is not an atheist and he is not agnostic. Satan and his angels believe in Jesus Christ and will the first to profess he is the son of God and he believes in hell. He trembles in thought of Christ and strives to defeat him. Jesus Christ is real and people without Him are without commitment. You cannot do more good than bad and think you can defeat the system.

Is your faith dynamic? You claim one way but treat people another. You point out how great of a Christian you are and how un-Christ like others are. You must think, feel and believe in him! Real faith is evidenced by works. One day God will look on us and see Jesus and what he has done of the cross for us. Where is your faith today?

THE LIGHTER SIDE It seems there was this minister who just had all of his remaining teeth pulled and new dentures were being made.

The first Sunday, he only preached 10 minutes.

The second Sunday, he preached only 20 minutes.

The first Sunday, my gums were so sore it hurt to talk.

You must have patience and be able to hold up under pressure in order to run for the Lord.

The Word of God will strengthen you and give you a power that nothing else can give you. You must learn how to lean and depend on the Word of God for strength to run the race.

Brother Ronnie’s message this morning was from Matthew 10:25-33, “What is the fear of God?” Psalms 111:10 tells us the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

To fear God is to reverence Him and be in awe of Him. In the world today there’s much we could be afraid of, but I John 4:18 tells us the perfect love of God will cast out fear.

The message tonight was from Mark 5:25-34; the woman in these verses knew if she could just touch Jesus she would be made whole. It’s not by our goodness but only by the blood fo Jesus we’re made whole. Jesus has His arms outstretched, saying “Whosoever will, come”.

Obituaries Kenneth Mack Lee

Funeral services for Kenneth Mack Lee, 77, were held March 18, at Heflin First United Methodist Church with Dr. Glenn Conner,and Dr. Michael Burgess officiating.

Burial followed at Cedar Creek Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Betty, sons Eric (Becky) Lee, Kendal (Hope) Lee, Daughter Traci (Glenn) Conner. Grandchildren Mitch Lee, Alex Lee, Graham Conner, Chandler Conner, Jacob Lee, Abby Lee and Anna Lee. Pallbearers were Mitch Lee, Alex Lee, Graham Conner, Jacob Lee, Robert Boozer and Tim Boozer. Reynold Lee and Larry Lee will serve as Honorary pallbearers.

Kenneth enjoyed fishing and golf. He spent most of his days watching his grandchildren play sports. He always watched the practices and games.

Kenneth was responsible for starting the Little League Baseball program in Cleburne County over 54 years ago.

He worked at Barber Dairy for 37 years before retiring.

He and Betty were active Volunteers at HEARTS. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to HEARTS, Heflin First United Methodist Church or Cleburne County Baseball Organization. .

Do you know you can be saved but without the spirit, because you lost it somewhere along the way. It is Gods responsibility to save you, but you are responsible to keep the spirit in your life. You can never do the will of God unless you are spirit filled. We need to be honest with God so we can be honest with our selves. If you will fall on your knees before God you will never fall before man. He is more concerned with your holiness than your happiness.

You need holiness in your life to be happy.

Sunday night text is out of 2Sam. 23:39 and 11:1-17. Ask yourself why do I serve God. GRACE. Are we really faithful enough for His grace? Think about that, the answer should be no. We fail Him everyday, but God loves us enough that He gives us His grace.

Mrs. Betty Jean Pilgrim, age 80, of Rome, Georgia passed away on March 8, 2014. She was born on May 3, 1933 in Heflin, AL to the late Monroe J. and Willie Chandler Terrell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Pilgrim; sister, Ollie Hammond; and brothers, John and Leroy Terrell.

During her life, Mrs. Pilgrim worked as a sales clerk at Wal-Mart and was a member of Fruithurst Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Alfredo Chavez of Rome and Regina and Phil Flanagan of Douglasville; son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Melaine Parson of Euharlee, GA; sisters, Louise Helton and Marie Driver; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Funeral services were held March 12, 2014 at 2:00 PM from Fruithurst Baptist Church with Rev. James Owens officiating. Music was provided by Bryant Hand and Amy Cordel. Pallbearers serving were Mitchell White, Ian Flanagan, Phil Flanagan, Freddie Chavez, and John Pope.

Interment followed in the Fruithurst City Cemetery.

Grace Faulk Stephens

Grace Faulk Stephens, 97, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2014, at home in Heflin, AL. She was born on April 12, 1916, in Selma, AL to John Smith and Anna (Dunklin) Faulk.

Grace grew up, finished high school, and raised her family in Selma, AL. She worked as a bookkeeper until her retirement. Grace was an avid traveler, conservative business woman, and devoted grandmother. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Selma.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband William A. (Bill) Stephens; parents John, Sr. and Anna Faulk; brother John, Jr. and wife Anne Faulk; sister Claudia Faulk all of Selma and son-in-law W. Rollan Bennett, of Heflin, AL. Grace is survived by her daughter Joyce S. (B.J.) Bennett of Heflin, AL; son and wife William A. (Steve) and Kay Stephens of Deatsville, AL; grandchildren Liz B. McDill of Carrollton, GA, Walter Bennett and wife Connie of Heflin, AL, Bill Bennett of Heflin, AL, Claudia Stephens of Spanish Fort, AL, Carrie S. McCurry and husband Michael of Brentwood, TN; great-grandchildren Reid McDill, Anna M. Dorsey, Alex Bennett, Rives Lee, Jackson Lee, Will Thomas McCurry, Mary Ballis McCurry, John Norris McCurry; and her sister Annabel F. Ricks of Denver, CO. Industrial board chooses a new way to advertise LAURA CAMPER

The Heflin Industrial Development Board Wednesday decided to add complete descriptions of county’s available commercial properties to its own website.

The board had included links on its website to individual available property descriptions on the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama’s website.

The partnership is a nonprofit that helps the state recruit and retain industry. Inter-

ested businesses can visit the partnership’s website to access information about counties and cities all over the state, including Cleburne County and it’s available properties.

Ellen Didier, a representative of Red Sage Communications, which designed the Industrial Board’s website, notified the board members that the partnership’s new website did not allow links to individual property information.

Didier gave the board members two

options: the company could download the existing property information from the partnership’s website onto the board’s server; or eliminate all individual property links on the board’s website and direct readers to information for all properties at the partnership’s new website address.

The board has six properties listed on the website, Didier said. It would take less than an hour to eliminate all individual property links and add one link to the top of the page, she estimated by email. It

would take less than 2 hours to download the individual property information to the board’s website, Didier said. The company charges $70 per hour, she said.

Board Chairman Jerry Cash said he would prefer to put the individual property information onto the Industrial Board’s website.

The board unanimously approved that option with no discussion.

County High School came to the race together for one of their Biggest Loser Club activities. Some, like Jodie Thompson and her daughter, Maggie Thompson, were running for the first time.

They were both sporting green hair extensions in their ponytails along with their T-shirts. It’s a healthy way to spend the holiday weekend, Jodie Thompson said.

“It’s always fun to get around people and have fun,” Thompson said.

At 10 a.m., registration for the Pet Parade kicked off and Small Town Bank’s parking lot was soon swarming with pets, many in their St. Patrick’s Day regalia. A Nubian goat named Thomas was getting a coat of water-based green paint for his first parade. Nearby was the bow that would complete his parade costume.

“He was a rescue,” said Lesa Kirby.

Her daughter, 11-year-old Hailie Kirby, raised the goat and wanted to bring him to the parade, she said. Nearby, her daughter Ashley White was painting the family’s service dog, Mater, with green paint. White’s daughter, 3-year-old Brianna Shuman, was planning to lead Mater in the parade.

Jennifer Rios of Heflin had already dressed her Maltese-shih tzu mix for the parade. Daisy was celebrating her first parade in a colorful dress.

“We’re going for best-dressed today,” Rios said.

Rios said she appreciates Heflin’s unique St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

“We’re a small town in a small county,” Rios said. “It’s nice to do these small things to get everybody out.”
