Raising the Bard toward a bigger act By Charles McNulty ASHLAND, Ore. — If the Oregon Shakespeare Festival doesn’t have the most enthusiastic audience of any regional theater in the country, there must be some performing arts center out there with a rabid cult. Ashland, OSF’s quaint home nestled in the foothills of mountain ranges and lined with arts-and-crafts boutiques and restaurants eager to pour local Pinot Noir, is a destination town for theatergoing. Spectators come from across the Pacific Northwest for multiday outings of Shakespeare, other classic and demiclassic authors and contemporary writing. It’s not just about the Bard of Avon, though the festival’s namesake sets the bar high in terms of dramatic scope and duration. Stemming the TVinfluenced tide of much contemporary theater, OSF makes 90-minute intermissionless fare the exception rather than the rule. The talk in 2009, the second full season of Cornerstone Theater Company co-founder Bill Rauch’s tenure as artistic director, is all about Equivocation, Bill Cain’s drama about Shakespeare’s struggle to dramatize the 1605 Gunpowder Plot to assassinate King James I and the nation’s Protestant power-brokers. This play, receiving its world premiere under Rauch’s direction, is a hot property, with a different production slated to open at Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles in November and another one at Manhattan Theatre Club in early 2010 in New York. Some in the OSF crowd who had caught Henry VIII and Macbeth, which both shed light on events Cain is dramatizing, were unusually prepared to appreciate the political nuances and theatrical quips of this work of historical fiction. Rauch has brought to Ashland the same bold quality of communal idealism that distinguished his leadership of Cornerstone — extraordinary “ownership” of the audience,

but bad habits appear widespread. The choice of work was varied — popular (Macbeth and Much Ado About Nothing) and less popular (Henry VIII and All’s Well That Ends Well) Shakespeare; spry world classics (The Servant of Two Masters); revamped masterpieces (Don Quixote” adapted by Octavio Solis); American writing old and new; outdoor offerings billed as the Green Show, and even a musical chestnut. As Appel said, “People here are willing to listen to a play that’s so obscure, and that energy goes from the audience to the actors in a way the almost spoils them.” With 82 actors and 10 acting interns, OSF has the largest resident company in the country. The situation has dream potential not just for thespians craving steady work but also for audiences longing to see a seasoned ensemble. Yet sought-after actors would have to be extremely devoted to their craft to accept an almost yearlong commitment in an area far from the media spotlight. Still, Rauch has brought to OSF more than enthusiasm. He’s come with a vision, aesthetic and political, to build on the achievements of Appel, who, talked of having “raised the profile of the festival among theater artists” expanded the operation and broadened the repertory. Raising the level of acting — the most pressing order of business — is a top priority for Rauch. He wants performers to continually confront new directorial perspectives (recognizing that comfort can lead to complacency), and he’s appointed Scott Kaiser as director of company development, a new position dedicated to “the long-term growth of each artist and the company as a whole.” There are also weekly ateliers for actors to work on their craft. And he’s assigned one group of actors to serve as an acting resource for new play development — especially exciting when you look at the names of those commissioned for the History Cycle, including Suzan-Lori Parks, Lynn Not-

tage, David Henry Hwang and Culture Clash. In short, there are reasons for artists to buy, so to speak, OSF stock. After all, there aren’t many places in America where talent can be stretched in so many directions. Or where diversity in casting translates into finding the best actor for the role, regardless of race, type or physical challenge. In The Music Man, Marian the librarian was played by black actress Gwendolyn Mulamba, and Howie Seago, a hearing-impaired actor, took the role of Marcellus Washburn. Last season saw a multiracial Our Town, directed by Chay Yew on the Elizabethan Stage, the first 20th-century play at the outdoor theater. Rauch says he’s trying to create an atmosphere in which “risk is rewarded rather than punished.” But when asked if he finds it hard to make those end-of-year decisions about which actors will be invited back, he replied with a single word: “Yes.” The Music Man and Equivo-

cation were robustly staged and augur better things to come. With less deadwood in the company and more chemistry between the leads, the pared fluidity of Rauch’s production of Meredith Willson’s musical would be right at home at the first tier of regional theaters. And Cain’s drama, burgeoning with smart and snappy writing (too much perhaps for one play), signals that contemporary dramatists will be encouraged to imagine along the same grand lines of their classical predecessors, who will always be OSF’s chief lure.

the sense of investment they have in the institution, as well as the need “to shake things up in the company,” to bring in fresh directorial perspectives and to challenge artists to “keep the work vital.” Like others in President Barack Obama’s America, Rauch is grappling with change and resistance to change. On the plus side, new play development is percolating with the commissioning of playwrights for a 37-play, 10year series exploring epochal shifts in American life. Alison Carey, who co-founded Cornerstone with Rauch, is the director of the project, American Revolutions: The United States History Cycle. Outreach to residents, less than 15 percent of ticket-buyers, has bumped up their attendance. Total ticket sales topped 400,000 for 2008, down a bit from the record set in 2007, the final season of Libby Appel’s 12-year reign as artistic director. No one could argue that this three-stage theatrical behemoth with an annual operating budget of more than $24 million isn’t gleaming with renewed purpose. But a twoday splurge of theater, which also included Henry VIII, The Music Man and Paradise Lost, exposed a weakness that OSF must address to advance among major nonprofit theaters — its midlevel acting company needs an overhaul. This observation was unavoidable at a matinee of Clifford Odets’ Depression-Era drama Paradise Lost, directed by Appel at Angus Bowmer Theatre, and Shakespeare’s Henry VIII, directed by John Spies at the outdoor Elizabethan Stage. The good news about both productions is that the stories were lucidly conveyed, with the plot presented without directorial garnish. This isn’t a bad strategy, and seems to be one that OSF audiences depend on. These folks would rather be spellbound by narratives than hypnotized by auteurs or superstars. But the acting was disappointing. Undoubtedly, there are many able performers in the sizable resident company,

Matisyahu mixes it up on new album By MARK KENNEDY Associated Press

Jeff Christensen/Associated Press

LeToya Luckett has a new album out this week and upcoming roles in two movies, ‘Preacher’s Kid’ and ‘Five Killers.’

R&B singer LeToya ready for round 2 as solo star Associated Press NEW YORK — After proving she could do it solo — her debut single and self-titled album both hit No. 1 on the charts three years ago — LeToya is ready for people to call her by her own name, without adding that annoying prefix. “I am now formerly the former member of Destiny’s Child,” the 28-year-old says with a laugh. “We are now LeToya Luckett, that’s what we’ve been and that’s what we will continue to say.” The Houston native will get a chance to show other sides of LeToya with her upcoming acting gigs: She stars in the movie Preacher’s Kid, due out this October, and has a role in 2010’s Five Killers with Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl. But before she heads to the big screen, LeToya is releasing her sophomore disc, Lady Love, out this week. The CD — which features Ne-Yo, Estelle, Ryan Leslie and Ludacris — has a range of breakup songs like “Lazy,” a tune about being too tired to try love after a failed relationship, and the uptempo “She Ain’t Got,” where LeToya’s so fed up she is ready to beat “the other woman” with a bat. The Associated Press: Would you really hit someone with a bat? LeToya: No. I wouldn’t. I’ve never had a fight in my life (laughs). I am so opposite of violent; lover not a fighter, for real. But I did that record because I know a lot of people would be able to relate to that. If you’ve been in the situation and you’ve done every-

thing you can, everything humanly possible to make it work, and this person just can’t get it together. And they have the nerve to go out and cheat and think this person that they’ve known for 10 minutes is going to be able to make things better and you’re at that boiling point and it’s like, “Oh, I wanna hit you with something!” AP: There seems to be a lot of breakup songs on the CD. How’d those records come together? LeToya: I’ve been single for a while now, and of course girls, we have our girl talks and we talk about each other’s crazy experiences in these relationships and so it makes it easy for me to write about my experiences, their experiences. AP: Do you feel like you’ve officially ventured away from your Destiny’s Child past? LeToya: I feel that way now, yes. I think that people are now starting to see who I am as an artist and get to know LeToya Luckett and not so much put all the focus on “former member of.” You know what I mean? AP: How have you grown since being in the group? LeToya: I’m not afraid to take chances. I don’t play it safe as much as I used to. I think when you’re so used to being on a team, any team, whether you be an athlete or in a singing group, you have to be a team player, and I’m still a team player, but when you step out on your own, it’s all about you. The focus is just on you, those eyes are just on you. So I think I’m accepting that now and it’s helping me to grow as a person.

NEW YORK — The world’s first Hasidic reggae superstar is getting a little unorthodox. Matisyahu Miller, known to his fans by his first name and to his friends simply as Matis, emerges this month with his first full-length album in three years — and a sound more like Jersey than Jamaica. He’s added electronica, funky pop, straightup guitar rock and even a touch of folk to his playlist. Singing lessons have given his voice new depth and melody. “It’s not really any longer about me being the Hasidic reggae guy,” he says an interview. “I’m informed by Hassidism and Judaism and reggae music, but it’s not that black and white, and it’s not that simple.” The early reaction? Not always cheers in Crown Heights, the Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn where he lives in a modest apartment with his wife and two young sons. “Just yesterday I was walking down the street and some kid was walking by me. He’s like, ‘Matis, stick to the reggae!’ I was like, ‘Ahhgh!”’ he recalls. Matisyahu, 30, pays any hecklers no heed. An underground curiosity-turned-mainstream star, he’s not about to remain in his unusual genre of one. “I think the vast majority of people that respect what I do are willing to move with me. I think it’s not so much about genres or styles of music as it is about expressing the emotion or the idea,” he says. “Whatever allows you to do that, whatever style, as long as it’s authentic.” Matisyahu was initially seen as a musical oddity when he emerged five years ago, an Orthodox Jew in a flat-brim black hat and bushy beard who loved hip-hop beats and sang dancehall reggae in a Jamaican accent. Seeing him for the first time, you could be forgiven for thinking it was all a Sacha Baron Cohen skit. His 2004 debut Shake Off The Dust... Arise, and the subsequent CDs Live at Stubb’s and Youth — all featuring versions of his biggest single “King Without a Crown” — became a crossover hit. Not bad for a former Deadhead who, before his conversion, had followed Phish on tour, dabbled in drugs and grew up nonreligious in White Plains, N.Y. His new 13-song CD Light is still definitely grounded in reggae. The first single, “One Day,” is reminiscent of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry.” But the album, which features collaborations with Good Charlotte, Trevor Hall and members of Fishbone, also has songs that could easily appear on a CD by Maroon 5. If you politely swayed while listening to his previous work, this will likely make you dance while pumping your fist.

www.bamaescapes.com

Chris Willis, who has worked as the main vocalist on Guetta’s past three albums, is probably the best collaborator on the disc, helping make “Gettin’ Over” and “Sound of Letting Go” both club-ready and radio-friendly. Guetta’s power as a producer is evident on One Love, which also features a remix of the Black Eyed Peas’ No. 1 jam, “I Gotta Feeling.” He also produced the original. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Most scornful, at-the-edge songs are sung by female divas, but Novel represents for all the men who are over it as well on the exceptional “Missing You.” — Mesfin Fekadu, Associated Press

Queen Latifah brings back the raps Queen Latifah Persona

There’s nobody quite like Queen Latifah, the rough-edged rapper turned jazz singer and Oscar-nominated actress. On her new CD, Persona, Latifah goes back to the roots that made her so unique in the first place. The album is an enjoyable mix of singing and rapping, produced by hip-hop hitmakers Cool & Dre and featuring cameos from the likes of Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, Busta Rhymes and Marsha Ambrosius. The style ranges from straight-up hip-hop to mid-tempo R&B to breathless techno, with a mercifully light sprinkle of the obligatory Autotune effects. Latifah has sung on two previous albums, and her voice is capable, comparable to most of the women populating today’s charts (She’s no Jennifer Hudson, but who is?). Singles like “Cue the Rain,” “My Couch” and “With You” are bodymoving tales of the type of hothouse love that blooms on the dance floor, while “People” with Mary J. Blige and “The World” tackle more weighty topics. Her singing occasionally get submerged beneath Cool & Dre’s dense instrumentals, and on a few songs it’s tough to differenti-

ate Latifah from her guest singers. When she raps, though, everything changes. Latifah still has the punch and wordplay of the woman who broke into entertainment more than 20 years ago as the rare female rapper who captured attention with skills instead of sex. On her new album, you recognize within the first few bars of “The Light” or “Over the Mountain” that Latifah is on the mic. Latifah’s rap voice demands attention the way her presence does on screen. That’s not usually the case with her singing. So big up to Latifah for continuing to expand her talents — and for not forgetting where she came from. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: “Over the Mountain” is a revealing glimpse into Latifah’s personal thoughts, featuring rugged raps and a chorus that almost takes flight. — Jesse Washington, Associated Press

Loudon Wainwright III explores Poole Loudon Wainwright III High Wide & Handsome — The Charlie Poole Project

Charlie Poole was a rambling, roguish, alcoholic, illiterate, banjo-playing hitmaker born in a North Carolina town that no longer exists. He became a star in the early days of the record business, then died following one last booze binge at age 39 in 1931. Loudon Wainwright III explores Poole’s rich legacy in this 30-track, two-CD set. It includes tunes from Poole’s repertoire and new material inspired by him, and because the music’s filled with humor and colorful characters, it’s right in Wainwright’s wheelhouse. He sings about trains and liquor, the lure of the road and

the tug of home, snake oil salesmen and mother. These are the sort of songs that rhyme “the matter” with “Cincinnati,” and there’s a folksy charm to every note. By focusing on Poole, these bio-discs explore the roots of American music and show how folk, country, bluegrass, gospel and jazz are all part of the same family tree. It’s an entertaining history lesson. Poole’s novelty songs are still funny, and his sentimental ballads are unlike anything heard today. CHECK THIS OUT: Long an underrated singer, Wainwright is at his best on “Way Up In NYC,” a hilarious tale of Poole’s introduction to the big city and record-biz shenanigans. — Steven Wine, Associated Press

Maybe Willie Nelson is too prolific Willie Nelson, American Classic

Willie Nelson is one of music’s greatest — few can argue that. His popularity crosses genres, entertainment mediums and socio-economic boundaries. Even as he creeps up on 80, he’s cool, he’s smart, he’s — just as the title of his latest album suggests — an American Classic. Yet American Classic is his second CD this year (the first was with Asleep at the Wheel), and he put out two CDs last year (and we’re not counting the constant flow of rereleases). With all this material to sift through, an album like American Classic is in danger of becoming background music. The album harkens back to Stardust, Nelson’s 31-year-old trendsetter (and a half-dozen others he’s done since). There’s nothing wrong with American Classic, but it doesn’t have the gravitas of that forerunner. Nelson steps into producer Tony LiPuma’s arrangements of jazz standards like “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “The

Nearness of You” and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” (with a playful Norah Jones), hits his mark and moves on to the next song. Nelson finished up his part on 11 of 12 cuts in a tidy four days of recording in New York, then headed to L.A. to record “If I Had You,” with Diana Krall. Easy as pie for a guy like Willie. Maybe a little too easy. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Some of Nelson’s appeal has been his ability to keep material fresh for decades with different treatments of old favorites that reflect newfound wisdom or experience. “Always on My Mind,” the final track of the album, revisits Nelson’s gospel choir-inflected original. There are still strings, but the song comes off feeling far more personal. — Chris Talbott, Associated Press

Music Reviews

Listening to David Guetta’s One Love is like partying at a multilevel European nightclub — bright colors shining, speedy beats bumping and intoxicated (or sober) boys and girls dancing the night away — all while vocals from R&B singers blast in the background. And the club’s VIP section is packed: The Black Eyed Peas, Ne-Yo, Akon, Estelle and Kelly Rowland make guest appearances on One Love. Though all those stars lend solid vocals to One Love, the songs that feature the lesser-known singers are what make the CD an enjoyable one. “Missing You,” featuring R&B singerproducer Novel, is top-notch; Kanye West protege Kid Cudi’s gritty singing tone blends well on the gloomy, but upbeat “Memories”; and on the CD’s closing track, the futuristic love song “If We Ever,” Makeba shines.

LOS ANGELES — They aren’t words you hear very often: an Ang Lee comedy. He hasn’t really made one since he directed The Wedding Banquet and Eat Drink Man Woman back-to-back in 1993 and 1994. And so, on the heels of the emotionally heavy Brokeback Mountain and Lust, Caution, Lee lightens up with Taking Woodstock — and the result is too lightweight. He approaches the fabled three-day concert from an outsider’s angle, which is admirably innovative; truly, the significance and influence of Woodstock have been chronicled ad nauseam, especially lately with its 40th anniversary having just passed. But in telling the story of the people who inadvertently launched the event, Lee leaves out the substance. Rather, he ambles amiably among these motley figures, with civic leader Elliot Teichberg (comic Demetri Martin) at the center. When Robert Altman used this structural tactic — and he did it often — it still felt cohesive, like an intricate but subtle dance. Taking Woodstock, by comparison, feels scattershot and incomplete. The script from Lee’s longtime collaborator James Schamus, based on Elliot Tiber’s memoir, traces the pieces that fell into place to make Woodstock happen. Elliot, a New York City interior designer, happens to have moved back home with his Russian immigrant parents (Henry Goodman and an over-the-top Imelda Staunton) to help them salvage their run-down Catskills motel. An arts and music festival in a neighboring town happens to have lost its permit. As president of the Bethel Chamber of Commerce, Elliot thinks it would

Mamie Gummer, left, and Jonathan Groff star in ‘Taking Woodstock.’ boost the economy to play host instead — and he just happens to know a guy named Max Yasgur (Eugene Levy) who owns a 600acre dairy farm, the perfect place for such an event. So Elliot reaches out to Woodstock producer Michael Lang, puts him in touch with Max, turns the motel into the concert’s headquarters and voila! History is born. It’s just that easy in a movie where there seems to be zero conflict. (Jonathan Groff stands out in his first film role as the laid-back but persuasive Lang.) And the always welcome Liev Schreiber stands out — for his sheer size, if nothing else — but also provides both laughs and gravitas in an awesomely bizarro turn as a 6-foot-3 crossdresser and ex-Marine named Vilma, who serves as a de facto security chief. Eventually, the hippies get wind of the show’s new location and descend on this rural area, the magnitude of which Lee depicts vividly through one long tracking shot as Elliot winds his way through traffic on the back of a police motorcycle. It’s a rare moment that feels organic and

alive, as if anything could happen at any time. There’s no real sense of the music, though, which is a bold step — then again, the performances have been so famously documented elsewhere, namely in the Oscar-winning 1970 concert film Woodstock, it was probably wise of Lee to avoid trying to recreate them and find his own angle into the event. But Taking Woodstock also leaves you feeling that something is missing. Instead, we hear some songs from far away, lilting over the hills, and at one point during an obligatory acid trip (in a van with Paul Dano and Kelli Garner) Elliot witnesses the teeming masses as waves of humanity undulating in front of the stage. It’s not his only moment of discovery: Elliot comes out as a gay man during this time. Rather than making a big deal out of this in a tortured or cliched way, Taking Woodstock just sort of lets it happen, then drops it. Like Martin’s sweet but placid performance — and the film in general — it ends up being forgettable, when it could have taken a little piece of your heart.

CHICAGO — The first thing you notice about Sharlto Copley, who grew up in South Africa and had not acted much until recently and somewhat fell into the lead role of the sci-fi extraterrestrial extravaganza District 9, is that he looks nothing like Hitler. Which is probably not what he expects to hear on his first press tour for his first film. But it’s also not what you’re expecting after you see Copley’s squirrelly, convincing performance in the movie, directed by an old friend, Neill Blomkamp. Copley plays a South African bureaucrat charged with evicting the Sasquatch-size lobster men who have been stranded in Johannesburg for 20 years, driving them from one shanty slum to the next, increasingly more degrading camp. As a parable for apartheid, it’s overt. But the Hitler thing is not. Copley plays Wikus — the name itself almost suggesting Blomkamp thought of the character as a kind of Wiki for “tyrannical company man.” Wikus, as Copley plays him, is one part Michael Scott from The Office, boxy and awkward, one part totalitarian creep, ensuring that the marginalizing of his targets is handled with a bloodless, efficient hand. But he’s not a villain, not ultimately, and Copley, in his mid-30s, is leaner and more movie-star rugged than the picture suggests. Q. You haven’t heard the Hitler comparison yet? A. No, and it’s fascinating. The mustache, I see. But it is a Hitler hairstyle in the film! Q. Your idea? A. All Neill — the character came from a short he made in 2005, but he let me create the rest of it, and improvise all of the dialogue. Q. Improvising against nothing? Against CGI? A. Well, no. The next biggest role in the film was held by this guy named Jason Cope, who played all of the creatures in the film. He was in this gray suit, which they kind of painted the aliens onto later. Neill had a script and a structure, but it was much looser while shooting. Q. Yet you’re not an actor, though, not really. You helped found a TV station in South Africa and produced lots of commercials and videos. Do you set out to talk to bureaucrats to figure out how to play this — people who were involved with apartheid? A. No. Neill told me to imagine an old bureaucrat from the apartheid era, but imagine it’s an alien situation. He has to go once a month and leave his desk to deal with these creatures, which he doesn’t want to do. My character really developed on camera, when other actors asked me questions.

By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Bobcat Goldthwait already counts his latest movie starring buddy Robin Williams a success, no matter how well it does at theaters. That’s because World’s Greatest Dad star Williams landed a slot to promote the film on NBC’s The Tonight Show, where Goldthwait once burned his own bridges by deliberately setting a chair on fire during an appearance with Jay Leno. In an interview shortly before Williams’ Tonight Show gig, Goldthwait marveled at the fact that the low-budget black comedy he wrote and directed would get airtime on one of Hollywood’s premier publicity venues. “I truly, not in a bitter way, am not too concerned about box office, because trust me, when I sat down and wrote this screenplay, I never thought that would happen,” Goldthwait, 47, said over coffee alongside Williams. “He’s going to go on The Tonight Show and talk about a movie I made. I’m banned from The Tonight Show.” World’s Greatest Dad continues Goldthwait’s tradition of truly twisted humor, which he also showcased in Sleeping Dogs Lie, an indie comedy about a woman whose impromptu sex act with

her dog causes havoc years later after she and her boyfriend adopt a policy of complete honesty. The new movie stars Williams as a high-school poetry teacher whose dream of becoming a famous writer finally happens after publicity surrounding a bizarre family tragedy snowballs into a national outpouring. The story leaves Williams’ single dad caught in a deception that serves his personal ambitions while sugarcoating the truth about his malignantly surly teenage son (Daryl Sabara of the Spy Kids flicks). Williams, 58, has been friends with Goldthwait for nearly 30 years. He appeared in Goldthwait’s 1991 directing debut, Shakes the Clown. That movie starred Goldthwait as a boozy clown framed for murder, Williams signing on for a bit part as a favor to his pal. “I went, ‘Alcoholic clown movie. Yes, I want that in my resume,”’ wisecracked Williams, who shared his thoughts about Goldthwait’s decision years ago to give up acting and stick to directing. “I think your acting in Shakes is pretty wonderful, in the Citizen Kane of alcoholic clown movies,” Williams told Goldthwait. “Bob can do it. It’s a question of do you want to do it? It’s like, people say to me, ‘Do you want to direct?’ I went, ‘Not at all. I’d rather cater.”’

dvd previews Adventureland In its own gentle way, the film restores a welcome note of humanism to a genre that has lately become little more than a repository for fart and vomit jokes. Jesse Eisenberg plays James Brennan, a recent college graduate whose plans for a European vacation before starting grad school are foiled when his family suffers an economic setback. James gets a job at the local amusement park. There he meets an eclectic group of lost and striving souls, including a thwarted rock musician (Ryan Reynolds) and a sultry, mysterious girl named Em (Kristen Stewart), with whom he furtively falls in love. Thanks to an exceptionally deft touch, director Greg Mottola captures the absurdity and anguish of young adulthood; his tender look back will ring wistfully true to anyone who has fallen in love, left home or still wonders what it would be like to do either. Contains drug use, profanity and sexual references. DVD extras include the rated and unrated versions of the film.

Duplicity Tony Gilroy’s romantic espionage caper pits two pharmaceutical companies against each other. Burkett & Randle, led by Howard Tully (Tom Wilkinson), has discovered a cream that will revolutionize the industry. Equikrom, led by Richard Garsik (Paul Giamatti) needs to steal the secret to that lotion. And there’s romance, of sorts. Behind the scenes, Claire Stenwick (Julia Roberts) and Ray Koval (Clive Owen) work their nefarious magic, he on Equikrom’s side, she on Burkett & Randle’s. But are they both really working for each other? And can they really trust each other? Luckily, Owen and Roberts both get to play off Giamatti, who overacts gleefully. It’s smart, it’s for grown-ups and it lets Julia Roberts laugh, if just once. Contains language, sexuality and displays of obscene wealth. DVD extras include commentary with writer/director Tony Gilroy and editor/coproducer John Gilroy. — The Washington Post

‘Arkham Asylum’ is Batman at his best tECHNOLOGY

By LOU KESTEN Associated Press

The video-game industry has defeated more superheroes than Lex Luthor could ever dream of. Superman, Aquaman, Iron Man, X-Men: All rendered lifeless by forces more focused on making a buck than on delivering thrills. So calling “Batman: Arkham Asylum” (Eidos, $59.99, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) one of the best superhero games ever is kind of a backhanded compliment. Let’s just call it a great game, period. For DC Comics fans, it’s a must-buy, but it’s hugely entertaining even if you aren’t versed in the whole Batman mythology. It begins with the Caped Crusader ushering the Joker back to Arkham Asylum, Gotham City’s home for the criminally insane. This time, however, the supervillain has set up a clever trap and quickly takes over the entire facility. Besides setting free hordes of violent lunatics, the Joker has an even deadlier endgame in mind — and only Batman can stop it. Fans will relish the chance to take on familiar foes like Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc and Scarecrow. Combat is easy to handle, and Batman can usually handle a dozen or so henchmen without breaking a sweat. But it’s more rewarding to take them out one by one, using Batman’s stealth skills to sneak up on them or swoop down from the rafters. More intriguing is the opportunity to explore Arkham, the eeriest videogame setting since Rapture, the underwater city in “BioShock.” The dank,

Batman battles some of the Joker’s henchmen in the video game ‘Batman: Arkham Asylum.’ decaying facility oozes menace and depravity, even when the all-seeing Joker isn’t taunting you over the public-address system. Throughout the asylum, you discover tools from Batman’s utility belt: “batarangs,” explosive gel, a grappling hook and other wonderful toys that open up new areas of Arkham and help you uncover its secrets. “Arkham Asylum” developer Rocksteady Studios borrows freely from other games: puzzles from “The Legend of Zelda,” stealth from “Metal Gear

Solid,” freaky nightmare sequences from “Eternal Darkness.” But those are pretty good games to imitate, and this game blends its influences smoothly. The mood reflects the darker tone of last year’s “The Dark Knight” movie, and younger Batfans may find the violence and dialogue disturbing. The smart script is by Paul Dini, a veteran of the noirish “Batman: The Animated Series,” and that show’s two stars — Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker — deliver stellar voiceover work.

Microsoft cutting price of high-end Xbox 360 By BARBARA ORTUTAY Associated Press

NEW YORK — Microsoft Corp. is slashing the price of the high-end Xbox 360 console by $100, matching Sony’s $100 price cut for the PlayStation 3 last week. Now, both the Xbox 360 Elite and the PS3 will cost $299. The price cuts in both cases are worldwide, though the exact amounts vary by region depending on currencies. Microsoft, which has had three versions of its Xbox 360 available at three different prices, also was to announce Thursday it is phasing out the mid-range, Pro, version of the console. It will be available for $249, down from $299,

while supplies last. The cheapest Xbox, the Arcade, which comes without a hard drive, will still cost $199. The price cuts are effective Friday, said David Dennis, a spokesman for Microsoft. Video game companies hope the price cuts will re-ignite sales in time for the holiday rush. For the bulk of this year, the industry has suffered from weak sales — hurt by the recession and lackluster game releases, which have kept consumers waiting to spend money on new titles. The announcement from Microsoft leaves only Nintendo Co. without a price cut for the fall, at least for now. The Wii has cost $250 since its launch nearly three years ago.

Demanding fans will be disappointed by the absence of some popular villains, and most of the major boss battles are lackluster. And it’s frustrating that Batman’s powers are sometimes unnaturally limited, forcing you to solve problems the way the programmers want you to do. But it’s a fascinating journey, combining a solid story with a lively mix of diverse gameplay styles. Rocksteady has, at long last, delivered a superhero game that’s really super. Three-and-ahalf stars out of four.

Fall movie releases

Special to The Star

Buildings crumble in ‘2010,’ starring John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton. The film opens Nov. 13.

Upcoming releases share apocalyptic theme By Robert W. Butler McClatchy Newspapers

“It’s the end of the world as we know it,” Michael Stipe sang in one of R.E.M.’s most memorable tunes, “and I feel fine.” Evidently watching Earth face extermination makes all of us feel fine ... or at least keeps us mightily entertained. How else to explain the crop of apocalyptic titles headed our way at the megaplex? You’d think that with all the troubles afflicting mankind that we’d be reluctant to contemplate the extinction of the human race and the ravaging of our beautiful planet. Yet just the opposite is true. Once fueled by fears of nuclear war, recent end-of-the-world movies now dabble with environmental collapse, alien invasion, unstoppable diseases and cataclysmic asteroid strikes. The Terminator franchise has sold millions of tickets with the premise that our own machines will turn against us, leaving smoldering cities peppered with human skulls.

Heck, Kevin Costner has made two post-apocalyptic epics, Waterworld and The Postman. Two of the more intriguing comedies this fall are about, of all things, zombies. In Dead Snow (Sept. 18) Nazi zombies terrorize ski enthusiasts in the European Alps; Zombieland (Oct. 9) is about losers in the real world who have found ways to thrive in a post-apocalyptic environment. But those are mere appetizers. The main course consists of three apocalyptic fall films with big budgets, bigname casts and a grim view of where we’re heading: The Road (opening Oct. 16) is the longawaited screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer-winning novel about a father and son slogging through a nuclear winter where all animals and plants have died. Scavenging food, evading roaming bands of cannibals, they’re seeking some sort of refuge. Ask anyone who’s read the book — this is one grueling, depressing tale. The movie was to have been released last fall but was pushed back, reportedly

for additional special effects work. That left some of us fretting that perhaps the movie was so true to the book that its distributor was panicking. In any case, advance buzz has been strong for Viggo Mortensen’s performance (Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Robert Duvall and Molly Parker also are in the cast). And Aussie director John Hillcoat showed with his Down Under Western The Proposition that he knows how to handle heavy material. Still, McCarthy’s story wasn’t about the spectacle of extermination but rather about the brutal, ever-shrinking world left in its wake. Will audiences warm up to a theme so chilly? 2012 (Nov. 13): Maybe Roland Emmerich is a misanthrope. He has consistently tried to wipe out mankind in his films. He did it with aliens in Independence Day and with devastating climate change in The Day After Tomorrow. Now he caps his end-of-the-world trilogy with 2012, which already has been getting a big media push thanks to a trailer that shows massive tidal waves slamming into

the Big Apple and covering the Himalayas. Heading the cast are John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton ... but with Emmerich it’s all about the spectacle. We’re betting 2012 will deliver. 9 (opening Sept. 9): It’s not set on Earth (supposedly it takes place in an alternate universe) but 9 is close enough. It’s a computer-animated fantasy about a rag-doll creature who struggles in a postapocalyptic wasteland to survive against alien creatures bent on their destruction. Writer/director Shane Acker has expanded his 2005 Oscar-nominated short and picked up a first-class cast of voice talent — Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Christopher Plummer, Crispin Glover, Jennifer Connelly and Martin Landau. It’s been noted that one reason science fiction is perennially popular is that it argues that mankind actually has a future. If so, why our fascination with end-ofthe-world scenarios? Perhaps we subconsciously hope that if we get our cosmic comeuppance in the movies, we’ll somehow avoid it in real life.

Sept. 18 WHITEOUT What: Female U.S. marshal trails killer across Antarctica on the eve of a six-monthlong night. Why we’d see it: We’re big Kate Beckinsale fans (though we prefer her in tight vinyl over parkas). And we like the premise. Why we wouldn’t: Director Dominic Sena’s track record (Swordfish, Gone in 60 Seconds) gives pause.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS What: Food rains from the sky in this 3-D animated comedy. Why we’d see it: Based on a very popular children’s book. Why we wouldn’t: Hollywood has trouble turning a simple book into a big film . (See How the Grinch Stole Christmas ... or don’t.)

fame

I can do bad all by myself

JENNIFER’S BODY What: A possessed cheerleader goes on a high-school killing spree. Why we’d see it: Great trailer, big buzz and a screenplay by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody (Juno). Why we wouldn’t: Yeah, Megan Fox is hot. But we’re still waiting to see her act.

THE INFORMANT! What: Whistleblower Matt Damon gives up his bosses at a corrupt agribusiness to the feds. Why we’d see it: Might be director Steven Soderbergh’s version of The Insider... and that would be a good thing. Why we wouldn’t: The marketing sends mixed signals ... is this a comedy? A dramedy? A thriller? What?

LOVE HAPPENS What: Widower writes best-seller about recovering from grief ... but when the right woman appears, can he put his theories into practice? Why we’d see it: Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart sound like just the right actors for this story. Why we wouldn’t: The title. Where’s my insulin?

Sept. 25 PANDORUM What: Astronauts (Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Cam Gigandet) awaken on their ship with no memory of who they are or what their mission is. Why we’d see it: Mystery and sci-fi ... an interesting combo. Why we wouldn’t: Amnesiacs in space ... didn’t we just see that in Moon?

SURROGATES What: In a future where people live in isolation, a cop must leave his home to investigate a murder. Why we’d see it: Bruce Willis. Plus, it’s a nifty idea of where our computer-obsessed world may take us. Why we wouldn’t: Director Jonathan Mostow’s career seemed to top out a few years ago with

FAME What: Remake of ’80 hit about students at NYC High School for the Performing Arts. Why we’d see it: Lots of music, dance and attractive young faces. Why we wouldn’t: Director Kevin Tancharoen has done only TV. Not sure of his ability to handle a full-fledged musical.

THE INVENTION OF LYING What: In this world no one has ever lied, until a writer seizes the opportunity for personal gain. Why we’d see it: The fall’s greatest cast: Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Patrick Stewart, Jonah Hill, Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe. Why we wouldn’t: Uh ... actually we can’t think of a reason.

★ What’s new this fall? Doctor shows and Jay Leno?!

Associated Press

NEW YORK — What can you say about a fall TV season most distinguished by the leap to prime-time by Jay Leno? Not exactly a fresh face after 17 years as host of The Tonight Show, Leno has the most-anticipated, most talked-about new show on the networks’ fall slate. Well, at least anticipated and talked about within the media sphere, where speculation rages over whether NBC can get away with stripping a talk-comedy hour every weeknight — instead of more ambitious, pricey episodic fare — in those five prime-time hours. Is NBC, which continues to struggle in fourth place among viewers, throwing in the towel as it hands Leno nearly one-quarter of its prime-time real estate? As the network TV business implodes, is NBC being shrewd to make do with less? Is it giving viewers what they didn’t know they wanted: a chipper, never-a-rerun alternative to sex, crime, blood and guts? Meanwhile, what kind of advantage, if any, will NBC rivals enjoy going up against The Jay Leno Show (arriving Sept. 14 at 9 p.m.) with their sex-crimeblood-and-guts dramas, including newcomers The Good Wife on CBS and ABC’s Eastwick and The Forgotten? Those are a few of the talking points for the new season — among those who are talking. But do the networks have viewers talking yet? Or even have their attention? Just how excited is the TV audience about Leno’s new show or any of the other 20 series debuting between now and early October on the five major broadcast networks? Once upon a time, the fall TV rollout was as eagerly awaited by Americans as those shiny new Ford and Chevy models unveiled in dealer showrooms. But motorists know this is the season of Cash for Clunkers. Maybe viewers suspect that, in the new age of digital media, a fall TV season is terribly, um, analog. Maybe network bosses dream of a simpler, more robust time before the PC became the new TV. In any case, they seem backward-looking this fall. The CW is reviving Melrose Place, the frothy L.A. soap that, in its initial conception, aired on Fox through the 1990s. The newfangled Melrose Place, which premieres Sept. 8, is the first Fall ’09 show out of the gate. There will also be spinoffs of current series. CBS’ undercover hit, NCIS, will

ABC/Associated Press

Lindsay Price, left, Rebecca Romijn, and Jaime Ray Newman are shown in a scene from ‘Eastwick,’ premiering Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. on ABC. spawn NCIS: Los Angeles, starring Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J as undercover agents fighting crime at the other end of the country from the Washington-based original. Fox’s animated Cleveland Show follows longtime pal Cleveland Brown from the Family Guy fold as he exits Rhode Island to start a new life in the Virginia town where he grew up. Other new shows just feel like spinoffs, thanks to their ritualistic familiarity. ABC’s The Forgotten is a drama about a team of dedicated amateurs (the so-called Forgotten Network) who take up cases the police have abandoned, tracking down the identities of anonymous murder victims while solving the murders of these John and Jane Does. Think: Without a Trace mixed with Cold Case, plus a corpse. NBC’s Trauma blends action and medicine to tell the wild-and-woolly story of first-responder paramedics in San Francisco — a sort of al fresco ER. Also on NBC, Mercy is a hospital drama told from the nurses’ point of view (think: Showtime’s recent Nurse Jackie, plus a dash of TNT’s Hawthorne). And CBS is prescribing yet more medicine with Three Rivers, which introduces to the genre yet another specialty: organ transplant. Stat! The CW taps into the vampire craze, though anemically, with its high-school soap, The Vampire Dia-

ries. And ABC evokes the devilish hero of The Witches of Eastwick (adapted from the novel by John Updike and 1987 hit film that starred Cher, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jack Nicholson) for its racy new supernatural drama Eastwick. The halls of justice haven’t been vacated. One of the most promising fall series is CBS’ The Good Wife. It stars Julianna Margulies as a wife and mother forced to resume her long-ago career as an attorney in the wake of betrayal when her politician hubby, played by Chris Noth, is jailed for corruption and philandering. (Think: former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich by way of former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer.) The fall’s funniest pilot is Community, a sort of classroom version of companion NBC comedy The Office. Here, a variety of losers (played by Chevy Chase, John Oliver and Joel McHale of The Soup, among others) enroll at a second-rate community college for any number of reasons, none of them connected with higher education. ABC’s Modern Family taps variations on a contemporary domestic theme. Crisscrossing with one another, the three main households share the same comfortable upper-middle-class neighborhood. But there the resemblance ends and the laughs begin.

On Fox, Brothers is a pleasant surprise. Sharp writing, a plausibly atodds family dynamic and an excellent cast (especially CCH Pounder as the family matriarch) score a touchdown for this project built around former football pro Michael Strahan. Fox’s charming hybrid of High School Musical and its own American Idol is called Glee, a one-hour musical comedy set at a high school where the glee club struggles for respect and even its very survival. This turns out to be a challenge on a campus where everybody else seems Looney Tunes. ABC’s FlashForward has a streak of looniness, too. The premise of this promising paranormal thriller: Everyone around the world simultaneously suffers a 2-minute-17-second blackout, then recovers with visions of what may or may not await them in the future. What else does the future hold for viewers this fall? Familiar stars from past sitcoms will be starring in new sitcoms. Patricia Heaton (late of Everybody Loves Raymond) stars in The Middle, where she plays a frazzled wife and working mother who is middle-aged, middle class and Midwestern. The show’s slyest, most poignantly telling joke: Frankie Heck (Heaton’s character) has the unenviable job of selling cars at her town’s sole surviving dealership. Also part of ABC’s new four-pack of Wednesday night sitcoms: Kelsey Grammer (who after Frasier co-starred with Heaton on the short-lived Back to You) is back, on Hank. This time he plays a Manhattan corporate boss who is forced from his job, and, in an effort to start over and cut back, moves his family to his hometown in Virginia. Yet another part of this Wednesday comedy block returns Courteney Cox to comedy in Cougar Town. Here, the Friends alumna plays a lovely but recently divorced mother of a teen who wrestles with the double standards for aging women and men. Yes, she’s a budding cougar (slang for an “older,” liberated women who dates younger men), even as she looks askance at her 40-ish sisters who embrace a rob-the-cradle dating lifestyle. The cougar theme is far less successfully depicted in CBS’ Accidentally on Purpose. Former Dharma & Greg star Jenna Elfman plays a woman in her late 30s who has a one-night stand with a guy who is cute but barely adult. A pregnancy, an unintended ongoing relationship and much forced hilarity result.

★ Select programs survive to their sophomore year

The Washington Post

Of more than two dozen newbies on last season’s broadcast schedule, fewer than half have made it to their sophomore year. Some died quick deaths. (Remember Do Not Disturb?) But others attained the coveted status of break-out hit. (See The Mentalist.) Others with so-so ratings were able to hang on for renewal (Dollhouse). To help you keep track, here’s a look at some programs that will be back for a second season this fall.

90210 Returns: Tuesday, Sept. 8, 7 p.m., CW Stars: Rob Estes, Lori Loughlin Premise: This update of Aaron Spelling’s 1990s hit Beverly Hills, 90210 returns to perhaps California’s hippest high school, centering on two siblings whose dad just happens to be the principal. When we last saw it: Revelations and accusations

were made at an after-prom party, while a baby was born elsewhere. Noteworthy: 90210 will be paired on Tuesday evenings with another Spelling remake, Melrose Place.

Parks and Recreation Returns: Thursday, Sept. 17, 7:30 p.m., NBC Stars: Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones Premise: An earnest local government bureaucrat takes on the system in Pawnee, Ind. When we last saw it: Poehler’s character tries to impress an important local figure. Noteworthy: The first two episodes of this season will be paired in the 8 o’clock hour with Poehler’s return to co-host two episodes of Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update Thursday with Seth Meyers.

Fringe Returns: Thursday, Sept. 17, 8 p.m., Fox Stars: Joshua Jackson,
