MONDAY RECORD YOUR GUIDE TO PUBLIC RECORDS AND VITAL STATISTICS IN CALHOUN COUNTY

Off to work ... with a previous generation One of the great resources enjoyed by historians and other nostalgic types of northeast Alabama is the Russell Brothers collection of photographs held in care by the Public Library of Anniston and Calhoun County. Taken many decades ago by a well-known commercial photographer in town, the images later became property of Lance Johnson Studios and subsequently of Jim Johnson, heir to the current business. Nearly 20 years ago a transfer was begun to put them in the care of the library, which with volunteer help — most significantly that of longtime Anniston resident Tee Morgan — financial contributions and grants, has catalogued them and made them available online through the library’s Web site. The bulk of the images are of regional residents who sat before the camera, but there are also images of scenes around Anniston — including workplaces. Sometimes identifications accompany these pictures and sometimes they don’t. Sometimes the identifications are only partial. But in this space that normally contains words about jobs, pictures about jobs of many years ago reveal, we think, almost as much about the people and their work as contemporary descriptions. Enjoy. — Bill Edwards bedwards@annistonstar.com

Bankruptcies A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts. The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:

how old photos came to contemporary light The late Tee Morgan, an Anniston native, began her research-inold-photographs project in the fall of 1988 as a genealogical project. When she learned the Public Library of Anniston and Calhoun County library had many old photographs stored in different places,

she then intended to bring them all together and catalog them. But by the following spring, she had a still larger goal in mind: to research not just family history but Anniston history, including the Johnsons’ glass negatives. Her work became not just a legacy to

her children but ‘’my legacy to Anniston,’’ as she likes to call it. Visit the library’s photo archive site through its Web home page, http://www.anniston.lib.al.us/, where clicking on “Library Catalog” and “Catalog (Home Access)” puts you in the archive space.
