IN BRIEF Rolling Stone’s Wood gets British police warning LONDON — A spokesman for Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood says he has been given a formal warning for assault. David Rigg said police gave Wood the formal warning or caution Tuesday after he was arrested earlier this month for assault near his home in Esher in southern England. Wood divorced last month. His marriage collapsed after he started dating a young Russian woman. A caution is a formal warning given by police. It is not a criminal conviction but police will keep a record of it for five years. Wood said in a statement that he is “greatly relieved this matter is resolved.” When asked about Wood, Surrey Police said that a 62-year-old man had been cautioned over a domestic incident. Police gave no other details.

Taylor Swift, Beyonce among Grammy performers NEW YORK — Taylor Swift and Beyonce will perform at the Grammy Awards next month. The Recording Academy said Tuesday that other performers will include the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Antebellum and Maxwell. Beyonce has 10 Grammy nominations; Swift has eight. A stage-crashing Kanye West interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards to say Beyonce should have won for best female video instead. West later apologized. The Grammys will be presented at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Jan. 31. The show will air on CBS. The Recording Academy says additional performers will be announced at a later date. — Associated Press

Annual party celebrates season with music The party’s on … the feeling’s here … that only comes one time a year… we’re simply having a wonderful Christmas time … To me, the words of this song are a fitting description of Christa Fair’s annual December parties. True enough, the parties reflect easygoing elegance to her guests, but there’s an equal measure of celebration and hard Hervey work in her giving the Folsom gift of an old-fashArtists in Action ioned Christmas at her Leighton Avenue home. Musicians are invited to sing and play instruments, colors are chosen for the theme, unique decorations are set out and the feast in the dining room becomes a display within itself. It’s a non-commercial Christmas celebration that makes the cares of the holiday rush slowly melt away. And on Dec. 20 — the 60th anniversary of the gathering — it was again standing-room-only in the front rooms when about 200 people experienced the feeling of good will during the holidays. “Christa’s party each year is the stuff from which nostalgic movies are made,” said Patricia Smith, a co-worker with Fair in the Knox Concert Series. “It’s the way Christmas ought to be, and it actually happens at Christa’s parties.” It was a picturesque gathering with people singing hymns and carols around the piano and everyone greeting each other. It was interesting to see how many shades of purple and lavender, the colors this year, adorned the guests’ attire. We felt the cold wind on our face as we stepped onto the spacious porch of the two-story home, where a preview of the musical night was heard by singer Christa Jane Morgan and her husband, saxophone player Jacob, from Jackson, Miss. Inside, there was laughter and song coming from two rooms, each with a piano, with people crowded around them. Deborah Stubbs started the night off with her Southern Gospel-style of playing, adding her touches of syncopation and full chords and runs. Throughout the evening others took their turn at the pianos, including Bill, Jenny and Laura Wall, Helen Henley, Betty Wingard, Jack Parris. Larry Kallus and myself also performed on violin. Caleb Clark, Davina Van Essen, Caylen McCall and Rachael Wall entertained with their singing.

Carl Goff/Special to The Star

Janice Reaves, left, and Christa Fair at Fair’s annual Christmas party. Both pianos played have a history. In the living room, the ivory-colored piano matched the style of Fair’s French antique furniture; it was custom-made for Fair as a 14th wedding anniversary present. The piano in the back room was once owned by Tamae Carnes, founder of the Knox Concert Series. Popular carols from past parties were again in demand. “O Little Town of Bethlehem” was written in 1868 by Phillip Brooks, who later became Bishop of Massachusetts. In 1866 he stood on one of the hills of Palestine looking down on the village where Christ was born. Two years later he remembered that night and wrote the words to this gentle carol, and his friend John Redner set music to the song. “Good Christian Men, Rejoice” is truly a folk song and seemed especially right for this party, and “O Come, O Come Emanuel” is ancient in text and music. It is based on plainsong, which was used in church during The Middle Ages. And “Ave Maria,” written by Franz Schubert, has been heard here time and time again. There’s always been music in this house, Fair said. Choral music has been rising to the rafters since she’s been here. At Fair’s home, the number of guests coming gets larger each year, she said.

In fact, one night, as many as 300 people came, even when snow was in the forecast. And each year she has her May Musicales in coordination with the Knox Concert Series, a time when emerging and veteran talent is heard. The silver Christmas tree with amethyst-colored ornaments in the foyer cast its light through the figures of a nativity scene made by a New Orleans artist. His figures were made from stained glass windows from churches that had been demolished. The food included turkey and ham, dips and fruit, and an assortment of desserts. It was catered by Flora Mallard, who has been helping Fair with her parties since 1987. The hostesses were Brenda Hooks, Becky Morgan, Robin Hopkins, Raeanna Hopkins and Janice Reaves. We left with a glad song on our lips and a new sense of joy. It was a grand night for singing the reality of that Bethlehem night into our lives. Meanwhile, the children upstairs had imagined Santa’s sleigh getting nearer as the adults read stories. But there’s one more event that could help keep the excitement going — all we need now is a Twelfth Night party.

Fitness games are reshaping medium By DERRIK J. LANG

By LOU KESTEN

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — At first glance, the rack of video games seems out of place next to the row of elliptical machines at The Sports Authority in Burbank, Calif. The nation’s largest sports retailer partnered with Nintendo last month to sell the popular Wii console and games. It’s another sign of the times: Video games aren’t just for shooting aliens anymore. “I actually came here looking for soccer equipment for my sons for Christmas, but this caught my eye,” said Celia Fernandez while browsing the sports- and fitness-themed Wii games at The Sports Authority. “We bought a Wii last year but don’t use it as much anymore, so I was thinking we might get them a new Wii game to go with their new soccer equipment.” Launched by Nintendo last year, the fitness game “Wii Fit” and the accompanying Wii Balance Board have bench-pressed the gaming world. Thanks to the Wii’s motion-controller and the scalelike balance board, exercise games — or exergames, as they’re known — have become a fully formed gaming genre, attracting scads of users who don’t normally play with joysticks. “With sales of over 8 million, it’s a sure bet that ‘Wii Fit’ has gone well beyond the traditional video game consumer in its reach,” said industry analyst Anita Frazier from research firm NPD Group. “I hear stories all the time from friends and colleagues about their sixty-, seventy- and even eighty-something parent, grandparent or aunt using ‘Wii Fit.”’ Several publishers are working up a sweat this holiday season in hopes of enticing similar consumers. Electronic Arts, THQ, Ubisoft and Majesco Entertainment have all unleashed their own exergames featuring an array of attention-grabbing gimmicks from digital cameras that scan users’ flabbiness to virtual trainers who urge players to “NEVER STOP MOVING.” The biggest competitor to “Wii Fit” is “EA Sports Active,” the gaming giant’s own fitness franchise launched earlier this year starring “The Best Life Diet” author and Oprah Winfrey personal trainer Bob Greene. The workout simulator comes with a resistance band and leg strap, which work in tandem with the motion-controller to track players’ movements.

Actress and former Playboy Playmate Jenny McCarthy works out with the fitness program, “Your Shape.” “Before I made this commitment to do this project with EA Sports, I’ll be honest, I was skeptical,” said Greene. “What kind of workout can you really get? I looked at what was already on the market at the time. To me, it was mostly just slow movements and relaxation, which is a great part of overall well-being, however, it didn’t actually challenge you.” Ubisoft is taking a handsfree approach to working out with “Your Shape,” which features former Playboy Playmate and celebrity mommy Jenny McCarthy. The game utilizes a digital camera plugged into the Wii which scans players’ bodies. Many of the “Your Shape” exercises can also incorporate real-life workout equipment, such as free weights and balance balls. Majesco’s “Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2010” features the toughas-nails trainer from NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” which has spawned its own exergame published by THQ that can transform gamers into contestants from the popular reality weight-loss competition. Both titles utilize the Wii Balance Board and can schedule players’ fitness regimes.

Whether these exergames actually help players lose weight or build muscle mass have been called into question. According to a recently released study by the American Council on Exercise that measured calories burned using “Wii Fit,” the game’s simulated activities provided “a very, very mild workout” compared with their real-life counterparts. That hasn’t stopped exergames from experiencing healthy sales. “EA Sports Active” has sold nearly 1 million copies since it was released in May, according to the NPD Group. A beach-themed sequel, “EA Sports Active: More Workouts,” was released last month. The follow-up features a six-week fitness program, virtual watersport activities and 35 new exercises. Nintendo’s “Wii Fit” expansion, “Wii Fit Plus,” outsold its predecessor its first month of release, pumping out over 440,000 copies in October. With Nintendo rivals Microsoft and Sony slated to launch their own motioncontrollers for their respective Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles next year, the exergame genre may have only begun to hit its stride.

The idea that video games were recessionproof turned out to be a myth this year, leading to declining sales, shuttered studios and thousands of newly unemployed developers. Stalled fortunes also meant less risk-taking from game publishers, who released plenty of sequels and other titles based on proven formulas. But the news wasn’t all bad — at least for consumers — with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all cutting prices on their flagship consoles. 1. “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves” (Sony, for the PlayStation 3): Like an interactive version of a classic Hollywood action movie, this globe-trotting treasure hunt delivers thrills, romance and more hairbreadth escapes than the entire Indiana Jones series. 2. “Assassin’s Creed II” (Ubisoft, for the Xbox 360, PS3): Renaissance Italy is the breathtaking setting for this intricate tale of conspiracy, murder and revenge. 3. “Dragon Age: Origins” (Electronic Arts, for the Xbox 360, PS3): Developer BioWare takes the elements of Tolkienesque high fantasy and recycles them into a gritty, sophisticated epic with plenty of surprising twists. 4. “Batman: Arkham Asylum” (Eidos, for the Xbox 360, PS3): The Caped Crusader gets trapped in Gotham’s nuthouse, where he has to endure the taunts and traps of The Joker. Cleverly designed challenges make this the best superhero game yet. 5. “inFamous” (Sony, for the PS3): The second best superhero game this year is the origin story of a guy named Cole who can control electricity. 6. “Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time” (Sony, for the PS3): Insomniac Games’ critter and robot pals are the most reliable characters in games (sorry, Mario), and their latest romp across the galaxies is as clever and colorful as ever. 7. “Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story” (Nintendo, for the DS): Mario did co-star in this lighthearted role-playing game, in which he and his brother explore the innards of their old foe, Bowser. It’s every bit as wacky as it sounds. 8. “Borderlands” (2K, for the Xbox 360, PS3): Gearbox combines the first-person shooter with role-playing elements in this addictive game. 9. “Forza Motorsport 3” (Microsoft, for the Xbox 360): Fans of hardcore racing simulations already love the “Forza” series, but developer Turn 10 has now made it easy for even the most inexperienced driver to take the wheel of a highperformance vehicle. 10. “Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars” (Rockstar, for the DS, PlayStation Portable): Rockstar Games delivers a handheld chapter of its “GTA” crime saga that’s nearly as immersive as its console-based cousins.

Susan Boyle hits a high holiday note By Randy Lewis Los Angeles Times

Dawn Villella/Associated Press file photo

Musician Brian Setzer poses at home with his guitar in his Minneapolis condo.

Brian Setzer Orchestra rocks Christmas By Kelli Skye Fadroski The Orange County Register

It just wouldn’t be Christmas without a visit from Jolly St. Setzer and his mighty orchestra. Back for a seventh year, the Brian Setzer Orchestra returns with its Christmas Rocks! Extravaganza. The three-time Grammy-award winner, who was recently nominated in the best rock instrumental category for “Mr. Surfer Goes Jazzin’,” is excited to bring his big band orchestra to Los Angeles. He also says that after seven years of playing Christmas shows, he’s still nowhere near sick of it. “If people are going to come see me in that capacity, I’m still gonna want to do it,” Setzer said in a recent phone chat. He rocks seasonal favorites like “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” “Blue Christmas” and “Jingle Bell Rock” throughout the night, but Setzer says that the show isn’t entirely dedicated to the holiday and calls the shindig merely “Christmas-flavored.” He says the group also peppers in some of the tracks off its latest release, Songs from a Lonely Avenue, as well as a few classics from Setzer’s rockabilly band, the legendary Stray Cats. Since he’s covered so many Christmas standards, as well as inked a few of his own, which song does Setzer love to listen to the most this time of year? “My favorite one ...,” he thinks for a few seconds. “It’s by a really overlooked guy, Andy Williams. He’s had out some great Christmas records and from those I’m going to give you ... ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.’ That followed in close second by any Elvis Christmas songs because those were staples in my house, but

Andy’s song, it’s a very beautiful version.” As for his least favorite, Setzer seems to have no love for Santa’s sled leader. “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” he says with a disgusted tone. “I’ve tried with that one but I’m just not gonna sing about a deer.” With so many other songs to choose from, it’s doubtful anyone will notice that he left out poor Rudolph. Setzer is looking forward to trying out some of his new songs. Songs from a Lonely Avenue, which was released on Oct. 13, marks the very first time that Setzer alone has penned an entire album. The songs, he says, are inspired by classic film noir like Alfred Hitchcock’s Dial M for Murder, Arthur Ripley’s Thunder Road and the 1946 film adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s novel The Big Sleep. “It’s mostly the crime-dramas and the mysteries,” he says. “I love all of the soundtracks (to those films) and that’s kind of where my head goes nowadays ... how to put music to a guy running down an alley. When you hear it done in those old movies it’s just classic.” Setzer started writing the album early last year but took a break when the band signed on for a tour of Japan and later he met up with the Stray Cats for some tour dates in Austria. “When that happened it derailed me because it was right in the middle of my creative process,” he says. “By the time I finally got home I was just sitting there with a tape recording and a notebook, but the light came right back on and there was little interruption. After I had finished the 13 songs I thought, ‘OK, I’m done. This is the story.’ I didn’t need to add anything else.”

What does Susan Boyle have in common with Taylor Swift, Josh Groban, Shania Twain and the Beatles? The unlikely British talent show runner-up-turnedpop megastar has delivered the perfect storm of a year-end album with her debut, I Dreamed a Dream, one that is showing signs of turning into 2009’s biggest seller. In doing so, she’s following the lead of other acts this decade in releasing fourth-quarter albums that became runaway hits by providing consumers with music that has cross-generational appeal — making it ideal for gift-giving — and that draws music fans who still favor CDs over downloads. “In the last six weeks of the year, if you can find the right kind of artist who appeals to the consumer who still purchases albums in great quantities, then you can hit that sort of sweet spot,” said Keith Caulfield, director of charts for Billboard. Last year, that was Taylor Swift’s then-new Fearless, which is still the top seller of 2009. Swift’s album has sold 2.7 million copies this year, while Boyle’s has piled up a three-week total of 1.8 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In the sales race, Boyle also trails Michael Jackson’s six-year-old Number Ones hits collection, which has sold 2.2 million copies this year. Boyle’s out-of-the-box success this season surprised some people in the music business, with firstweek sales of more than 700,000 copies spurred by tens of millions of YouTube hits for her appearances on Britain’s Got Talent, the U.K. version of American Idol. What’s even more eye-opening is how strong sales of her CD have remained, topping 500,000 in each of the two succeeding weeks.

Blige delivers soulful album Mary J. Blige Stronger withEach Tear Mary J. Blige’s style — both musical and personal — has gradually evolved over her nearly 20-year career. The Grammy winner’s ninth studio album, Stronger withEach Tear, is the latest evidence of that evolution. The disc’s title track is an empowerment anthem, representative of recent chart-toppers that have given the long-hailed “Queen of Hip-hop Soul” mainstream appeal. “In each tear there’s a lesson/ makes you wiser than before/ makes you stronger than you know,” Blige belts over a steady, marching beat. Big buzz singer-rapper Drake joins the 38-year-old songstress on the uptempo single “The One,” and T.I. lends his Southern drawl

to the bouncy “Good Love.” Both songs are good, but “In the Morning” is great because the track features Blige tapping into her signature soulful sound. The same goes for the bluesy “I Can See in Color.” The gut-wrenching selection comes from the movie Precious, and is just one more example of Blige’s consistent ability to exude power even when she’s expressing pain. CHECK OUT THIS TRACK OUT: “All up in your fridge, and next will be the stove. Never let a girl cook in your kitchen,” Blige warns on The-Dream and C. “Tricky” Stewart-produced “Kitchen.” The track has an old-school sound that makes this advice sound like something grandma might say. — Melanie Sims, Associated Press

Marcus Johnson continues to please with 11th album Marcus Johnson Poetically Justified

As popular as he is prolific, keyboardist-composer Marcus Johnson sent out several invitations before recording his 11th CD. A smart move, too. Saxophonists Najee and Marcus Anderson contribute cameos, along with vocalists Maysa and Miles Jaye, who play a significant role in pushing some of the performances on Poetically Justified beyond the realm of radiofriendly instrumentals. Of course, longtime fans who appreciate Johnson’s flair for tweaking smooth jazz sounds won’t be disappointed by most of the offerings. Take, for example, “Chillaxin,” with its synth-triggered washes and percolating beats “Ellicott City,” a riffing, funk

bass-anchored track featuring saxophonist Phillip Martin or “Cherish the Journey,” a polished ballad that blends elements of pop and rock. The same goes for Johnson’s bright, groove-happy takes on the Jacksons’ “This Place Hotel” and the John Legend hit “Used to Love You.” As for the tunes showcasing the guest vocalists, they add plenty of lift to this 14-track collection. Jaye is in top form, especially on his self-penned ballad “Heaven,” the CD’s romantic pop closer, while Maysa charges “Hold On” with her customary mix of spirit, soul and personality. Amy, Beyonce, Kanye, made decade’s best albums By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY Associated Press

The first decade of the new millennium produced some amazing albums, CDs that should go down with the best works of art. You might not find those albums on this list — which doesn’t mean this list isn’t the best of the decade. But for an album to make the cut, it had to be more than just something to appreciate and put on a shelf. It had to be something you couldn’t live without, that you had on your go-to playlist, that you listened to not just the year it came out ... but in the years since.

Best albums of the decade: 1. Denials, Delusions and Decisions, Jaguar Wright: Who? WHO? OK, OK, she’s not the best-known artist of the decade; she could win an award for most obscure. But this R&B singer-songwriter should have won top accolades for her amazing debut album, a raw, sometimes profane, yet brilliant collection of songs about a woman frustrated by love and life. This is a riveting CD that never leaves those who hear it. Too bad so few people had that experience with such a masterful album. 2. Confessions, Usher: If Usher is this generation’s Michael Jackson, this was his Thriller. Every song is good, and most of them are absolutely great tunes that paint a complex portrait of a man entangled in a relationship when his inner bachelor is trying to set him free. 3. Mama’s Gun, Erykah Badu: “Because I’m cleva, when I bust a rhyme,” Badu croons on one of the disc’s tracks, “Cleva.” But that could be a synopsis for this entire album, which grabs you as much by lyrics as it does by its musicality. 4. The College Dropout, Kanye West: The self-proclaimed “voice of the generation” first roared with his debut, changing the game of rap, from his production to his style. Just when rap was beginning to sag creatively, Kanye provided its biggest boost with this amazing concept album. Say what you want, but West is not only one of rap’s greatest, but music’s greatest as well. 5. Back to Black, Amy Winehouse: If Winehouse doesn’t get her act together, she may go down in history as a two-hit wonder best known for the song “Rehab,” that would come to define her disheveled life. But listening to this album, you forget about all that drama and get lost in her artistry — those sassy

lyrics, the retro-soul and the emotional depth in her voice. Here’s hoping we can get that Amy back in the next decade. 6. Get Rich or Die Tryin’ 50 Cent: There’s nothing particularly deep about this album, but when you make songs this good, you know what? It’s OK. From “In Da Club” to “What Up Gangsta” to “P.I.M.P.,” 50’s debut was thoroughly riveting. 7. B’day, Beyonce: Beyonce could have chosen to make Dangerously in Love 2 for her sophomore debut. Instead, she took a musical risk by trying out different sonic styles, from the futuristic funk of “Green Light” to the acoustic brilliance of “Irreplaceable.” With B’day Beyonce established herself not only as this decade’s most important hitmaker, but also established her artistic heft. 8. Testimony: Vol 1. Life and Relationship, India.Arie: Being eternally positive has often been a negative in India. Arie’s career — sometimes people want to wallow in grief with music that mirrors their mood and not be told to look at the silver lining. For that reason, she’s often been ignored and derided, but those who choose to embrace the light are always rewarded, and on “Testimony,” India finds a way to turn heartbreak into lyrics filled with wisdom, optimism and grace — something we should all celebrate. 9. The Chocolate Factory, R. Kelly: In the middle of a child porn scandal (of which he would eventually be cleared), R. Kelly decided to write with his heart in mind, and not that other body part that usually dictates his music, and delivered the best album of his career, with touching love songs and bluesy heartbreak ballads. Sure, there was the obligatory sex-equals-machinery song with “Ignition,” but this album took Kelly to a level we wish he had been able to sustain. 10. The Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem: This is Eminem’s greatest album, where his demented genius is at its apex, with songs such as “Stan” and “The Way I Am.” Here, we get more of a sense of who Marshall Mathers is before the caricature of Eminem took over completely, and his image became cartoonish and garish. On this album, Eminem is a conduit to warped young Americans whose voices were silent — until Mathers came along.

On rare occasions, putting a novel through the Hollywood wringer does the story a real service. The rather whiny tone of Walter Kirn’s Up in the Air vanishes in Jason Reitman’s extreme makeover of this travelogue comedy about a guy who traipses across America, firing people for a living while greedily counting the miles built up in his frequent-flyer program. Gone is the book’s fickle, possibly amnesiac, definitely disturbed main character, replaced by a lovably overconfident road-trip warrior, a dynamo played to perfection by George Clooney. Gone or transformed are many of Kirn’s fly-by-night bit players, swapped out for strong supporting figures led by Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. And mostly gone is the self-absorbed narrowness of Kirn’s story, a one-man show for which Reitman has substituted an expansive, very relevant tale of corporate downsizing and the people suffering through it. For two-thirds of the journey, Up in the Air flies even straighter and truer than director Reitman’s 2007 teenpregnancy hit, Juno, delivering snappy screwball dialogue with deep touches of pathos. The film strays off course in the final act, though, veering from an insightful portrait of willful disconnection in our age of portability and turning kind of mushy, kind of vague, kind of conventional.

People change, lessons are learned, but the movie ends up landing on familiar turf rather than the bold, exotic location where it seemed bound early on. Reitman, who shares screenwriting credit with Sheldon Turner, jettisons the hazy meandering of Kirn’s protagonist, who’s grown weary of his traveling ways and is looking for an out. Instead, Clooney’s Ryan Bingham lives for the life of airports, rented cars and executive suites. He expertly maneuvers from hub to hub, staying only long enough to pass out pink slips and offer a semblance of career-transition counseling to the people he fires for downsizing companies whose bosses are too spineless to do the nasty deeds themselves. Ryan’s main goal is to reach the 10 million-mile plateau on his frequent-flyer account, an aspiration jeopardized when his own firm decides to implement a program of firing people by teleconference, so they never have to leave the home office. Just as Ryan meets his goddess of the skies, frequentflyer soulmate Alex (Farmiga), his company dispatches him with straight-out-of-school efficiency expert Natalie (Kendrick) to test the firing-from-a-distance technology that threatens to ground him for good. Up in the Air peaks too soon, with a marvelous exchange in an anonymous airport as Ryan, Alex and Natalie debate and dissect one another’s values with grand humor but incisorlike ferocity. From there, the movie descends to a safer altitude, offering up a big, though somewhat contrived, dramatic twist as Ryan reconnects with his family and begins to question the worthiness of his rambling.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel is a kids comedy that screams “Direct to DVD.” It doesn’t help that it screams that in high, squeaky, three-part harmony. Whatever slim charms there were in the nostalgic, musically cute and slapstick-friendly first film of chipmunk mania are squished right out of The Squeakuel like so much rodent roadkill. The cast is cut-rate and the script needed a serious visit from a serious gag writer. Apparently, Fox blew the budget on tunes. Songs from Beyonce and Katy Perry to the Bee Gees and The Kinks are amusingly covered by competing bands of harmonizing forest fauna. Alvin, Simon and Theodore take a step back from fame to go to West Eastman High School, where they cope with bullies, girls, budget cuts to the school music program and Alvin’s (voiced by Justin Long) egomania. They do it all without their “Dad,” David Seville (Jason Lee, wisely opting to do his few scenes in traction in a hospital room). So Dave’s irresponsible, video-game addict cousin Toby (Zachary Levi) is put in charge. There must be rules for playing the human straight man or woman in talking-critter movies. Rule one has to be “Don’t make the audience feel sorry for you for taking the part.” Whatever charms network executives saw in Levi (TV’s Chuck and Less Than Perfect), he hasn’t the charisma to fill even a small fraction of the big screen. He doesn’t try. Levi didn’t phone this in — he texted. A Destiny’s Child-inspired counter-group, The Chipettes — managed by the Chipmunks’ old agentnemesis, Ian (David Cross) — shows up to shake their money makers, tempt the boys and sing “(Single Ladies) Put a Ring on It” and other recent girlgroup hits. The film credits Anna Faris, Amy Poehler and Christina Applegate with doing their voices, but who can verify that? The script — Jon Vitti, Jonathan Abel and Glenn Berger will be deleting this from their resumes — has one laugh in it. One. If you don’t know what “Dutch Oven!” means in relation to flatulence, ask your kids.

9 The film, Shane Acker’s feature-length telling of his Oscar-nominated student short, will expose the animator’s talents to a much wider world. Nine burlapped Beowulfian Bravehearts — Acker dubs them “stitchpunk” dolls — individually represent parts of their late ScientistCreator’s soul. Humanity has been wiped out by the rise (and rage) of the machines, so these small dolls, each possessing a distinct personality, must band together to try to conquer a Cat Beast and a Winged Beast, among other fiercely clattering creatures. But for all its talk of preserving the human soul, it’s too busy dodging creaking machines to pause and let us feel any real depth of connection among the plucky stitchpunkers. Contains violence and scary images.

Jennifer’s Body Megan Fox makes a subversive plaything of her smokin’ hottie persona as Jennifer Check, a high school Queen Bee who, after an ugly encounter with a van full of rock musicians, becomes a raging succubus with a taste for Type B (Boy) blood. Amanda Seyfried plays Jennifer’s bookish pal, who twigs to her BFF’s psychoweirdness and could very well pay for that insight with her life. The movie, written by Diablo Cody (Juno), introduces a little rrriot grrrl-y feminism to a genre that for too long has been predicated on female

victimization. And director Karyn Kusama (Girlfight) handles the structural imperatives with solid timing and occasional panache. Contains sexuality, bloody violence, profanity and brief drug use.

Paranormal Activity This genuinely chilling, low-budget indie — shot back in 2006 by first-time filmmaker Oren Peli — tells the story of a demonic force plaguing a young couple within the claustrophobic walls of their sparsely furnished San Diego home. “You can’t run from this,” a psychic tells Katie (Katie Featherston), who has been haunted by eerie disturbances since childhood. Katie’s gadget-obsessed boyfriend, Micah (Micah Sloat), responds by setting up a video camera to document what happens each night when they tuck into bed. At first, little registers. Then, things start to get really freaky. Peli relies largely on purposely amateurish and dimly lit bedroom scenes to form the mundane-but-eventually-disturbing core of the movie. Its suspense is the sort that lurks in shadows, making our eyes play tricks and our ears hear unidentified bumps — or thuds — in the night. Contains offensive language.

Jovovich) have gone on their honeymoon. They’ve left behind the Big Island and headed for Kauai, to backpack through the lush undergrowth in search of remote beaches. However, upon arriving, they hear the story about honeymooners being murdered by a couple back in Honolulu. Then they meet Gina (Kiele Sanchez) and Nick (Timothy Olyphant), who has a titanium plate in his head, a crazed look in his eye and a sufficient number of Iraq war stories to curl one’s hair. They’ve also just come from Honolulu. As the couples do their psychological dance and the viewer tries to figure out just exactly where in the wide, wide world of steamy tropical paradise this all is going, the spasms of fear multiply exponentially. Love is simple-minded in ‘It’s Complicated’ it’s complicated H H Rating: R for drug content and sexuality Running time: 1:58 STARRING: Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, Lake Bell

Associated Press It’s Complicated is lying from the moment the title appears. Writer-director Nancy Meyers’ latest relationship comedy isn’t what the name promises at all. It’s simple, almost as simple about grown-up romance and heartache as the average Hollywood teen comedy is about youthful love and sex. That said, a simple-minded story can benefit enormously with Meryl Streep on screen for almost an entire movie. Streep deals a charming performance as a divorced woman in an affair with her remarried ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) and a flirtation with a new man (Steve Martin). It’s got to be hard work to bring authenticity to a character as potentially artificial and shallow as Streep’s Jane Adler. Streep makes everything look effortless and real these days, singing, dancing single mom in Mamma Mia! over the summer, stern, inflexible nun in Doubt come winter. Too bad Streep has to put on this nice show to such superficial effect in It’s Com-

plicated, and for that matter, too bad for Baldwin, Martin and the rest of an earnest supporting cast led by John Krasinski. Meyers serves up fluff as light as the pastries Jane bakes for a living, a story to make divorced people wish their broken marriages and the ugly aftermath could be as fun and frolicsome as this. Ten years after Jake (Baldwin) left her, Jane has reached an uneasy peace with her ex, who’s now married to a younger woman (Lake Bell). Jane and Jake find themselves alone over dinner and many drinks at a hotel in New York City, where they and the rest of family have gathered for their son’s college graduation. Sparks are rekindled, a rash one-nighter leads to an affair, and Jane finds herself wooed by Jake, who’s dissatisfied with the new wife and wants the old one back. Even with Streep and Baldwin’s drunken-debauchery scene, the first half of the movie is deadly dull. The big laughs Meyers swings for never pay off the way she wants, and the three-way romance totters to an uninteresting conclusion that lacks anything approaching the heart of how her love triangle wrapped up in Something’s Gotta Give. The story’s not entirely predictable. Yet it’s anything but complicated.

Take it from a lifelong fan of Arthur Conan Doyle: Robert Downey Jr. is so NOT Sherlock Holmes. That’s not a hindrance — in fact, it’s a big help — as he and director Guy Ritchie bring Conan Doyle’s dusty Victorianage detective into the modern world. Enough of the trappings are left in their action romp Sherlock Holmes — the lightning-fast cerebrations, the encyclopedic knowledge of London, the compulsive single-mindedness, the vain one-upmanship — to make Downey a reasonably faithful embodiment of the figure Conan Doyle created. And of course, this is Downey, whose career resurgence rests on his ability to make the most unlikely role his own. He doesn’t look like the classic Holmes, he plays the man as a scamp, he’s after laughs as much as lawbreakers. But Downey does a great Brit, he lives large in the part, and he brings a human spark to cold egghead Holmes that will help pack in huge audiences for a character on the fringes since the Basil Rathbone days. Revisionists have done a number on Holmes before — he was psycho-

analyzed by Sigmund Freud in The Seven-PerCent Solution and spoofed by Gene Wilder in The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother. So why shouldn’t Ritchie put his Londonrogues-and-rascals spin on Holmes and cast the detective into a brawn-overbrain action epic? After all, Conan Doyle’s Holmes tales could be action riproarers. The failing of Ritchie is the drab plot they built around Holmes, an uninspired tale of a secret society and potentially supernatural doings. It’s nonsense, a dumb Hollywood treatment that’s beneath Holmes but

is made watchable, even exhilarating at times, by clever chases and scuffles, a superb recreation of old London in its splendor and squalor, and the amiable interplay of the actors. Jude Law heads the supporting cast as Holmes’ colleague, Watson, less a loyal sidekick in Ritchie’s creation than an odd-couple roomie in a bickeringbuddy bromance. Ravishing in every scene, Rachel McAdams was born to wear the sort of velvety, frilly Victorian garb she dons as Irene Adler, a cunning foil to Holmes as well as his romantic interest, the most-extreme revision by Ritchie and company.

Sick of holiday movies? Here’s a list of alternatives By Jen Chaney The Washington Post

Special to The Star

Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert and Rachel McAdams star in 2004’s ‘Mean Girls.’ season. The Apartment: Billy Wilder’s Oscar-winning 1960 masterpiece about a Mr. Nice Guy (Jack Lemmon) who loans his apartment to philandering executives takes place during the holiday season, delivering scenes of boisterous office parties, a matter of Christmas Eve life-or-death for our

leading lady (Shirley MacLaine) and a rewarding New Year’s Eve epiphany. Almost five decades later, The Apartment remains a smart, insightful and thoroughly satisfying comedy with the courage to show us what so many modern yuletide romances don’t: the aching loneliness brought on by the season of

he and this film raise about our overconsuming culture are more relevant than ever. Mean Girls: A candy canegram snub and an inappropriately provocative “Jingle Bell Rock” routine are what finally begin to break down the bonds between the vacuous, popular Plastics in this clever dissection of teen-girl power politics. A good choice for those who want to inject some high-school comedy into their holiday-viewing mix, or just want to remember a time when Lindsay Lohan was known for her talent instead of her celebrity status. The Last Picture Show: In Peter Bogdanovich’s black-andwhite portrait of life in a small Texas town during the 1950s, a Christmas party practically seals the fates of the main characters. That’s where it becomes clear that young Sonny (Timothy Bottoms) will embark on a longterm affair with an older woman (Cloris Leachman) and that it’s only a matter of time until socialclimbing Jacy (Cybill Shepherd) ruptures a few hearts. Ho, ho, ho, indeed.

This list of unconventional holiday movies provides alternatives to the usual Christmas Story/It’s a Wonderful Life/Elf movie marathons that have become our national Christmascinema default setting. Each of the following selections takes place during the holiday season or includes at least one crucial yuletide scene, and all are available on DVD and/or Blu-ray. Toy Story: If you live in a house with young children, what is Christmas Day, really, but a story about toys? (Or at least a story about mom and dad assembling toys.) Pixar’s first picture — and the one that introduced us to Woody and Buzz Lightyear, a Butch and Sundance for the digital-animation generation — is still a delight almost 15 years since its debut. And the fact that it closes on Christmas morning, when young Andy, his family and his cadre of Mr. Potato Heads and Bo Peeps have settled cozily into a new house, makes it perfect family fare for the holiday

mistletoe kisses. Lethal Weapon: A gun battle on a Christmas tree lot. A guy who takes a bullet in the chest, and in his carton of egg nog. Mel Gibson in a mullet. If all of these things say Christmas to you, then this 1987 action smash — which opens with a round of “Jingle Bell Rock” and, in a bit of additional seasonal trivia, features holiday songstress Darlene Love in the role of Danny Glover’s wife — will provide just the right fala-la jolt. What Would Jesus Buy?: We all know that Christmas is far too commercial. I mean, Charlie Brown told us that years ago. Yet most of us continue to play the same put-that-reindeer-onmy-credit-card games every year, spending money on gifts that our loved ones don’t really want or need. This 2007 documentary follows one man — Bill Talen, aka the Reverend Billy — who takes the members of his “Church of Stop Shopping” on the road during the holiday season in an effort to make us knock it off. Talen’s tactics may be a little loony, but the issues

Hollywood adds money, talent to made-for-Web shows By RYAN NAKASHIMA Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Web sites that buy original video clips often pay so little that The Bannen Way, a flashy crime thriller debuting online, looked destined to be made poorly if it could be made at all. Yet budding filmmakers Jesse Warren and Mark Gantt managed to hire 40-odd staff, including a boom operator, camerapeople — yes, more than one — and even production assistants on hand to offer sunscreen and sandwiches. The production had actors familiar to some TV and movie audiences, including Michael Ironside, Robert Forster and Vanessa Marcil. The secret to their success? Treat the Internet run like a TV or movie release, which often loses money on its on-screen debut, but can make healthy profits when issued on DVD or Blu-ray and later sold for reruns on cable or overseas. With that in mind, major movie studios are now getting behind such productions, giving them a lift in budgets and quality — a far cry from the shaky camerawork and dubious special effects prevalent when Web video became a new phenomenon a few years ago. For Warren and Gantt, who wrapped up shooting in October, a snazzy trailer they produced helped snag Sony Pictures Television as a partner. “We came up with this idea,” said Warren, 31. “There’s no limit to how many episodes there can be in a Web series. So why don’t we design it as a (feature-length movie) so we can sell it as a DVD feature at the end?” Sony executives, it turns out, had the same idea. The studio picked up the project in April and gave it a budget of around $1 million. That’s nowhere near the $30 million-plus budgets of many Hollywood movies, but more than the producers were told they could sell it for. Web sites typically pay up to $5,000 for a short clip of original video; with 16 episodes, other Web sites might have paid around $100,000 for The Bannen Way. “This money buys more lights and more production value,” said Gantt, 40. One quirk of the Web is that each episode must have a cliffhanger to keep online viewers coming back. In one scene, the audience learns for the first time that

Bannen’s father is the chief of police, and viewers realize the son is about to be entangled in a cops-and-robbers struggle between father and uncle. “It moves pretty well,” Warren says, snapping his fingers. “We had breaks that would naturally lend itself to the Web.” Sony Pictures Television hopes the release will gain buzz and a few advertising dollars when it begins to debut in increments in January on the Sony-owned Crackle.com, a site targeted at males aged 18-34. Then, it will stop running for free online and get repackaged for sale to TV outlets, on iTunes and elsewhere. Although the main goal is to drive traffic to Crackle.com, which Sony Corp. acquired when it was called Grouper for nearly $60 million in 2006, made-for-Web productions are expected to make a profit by themselves. Thus, studios scrutinize projects before approving them and committing funding — green-lighting in industry speak. In this case, studio input during the production was also part of the process. “We go through a very similar greenlight process as we would for any piece of content in the studio,” said Eric Berger, senior vice president of digital networks for Sony Pictures Television, which is planning to make 15 Web productions annually. “How and why we make them and where we will make money is conceived with every project.” Yet for every Web series that is made

with a modest budget and high-profile directors such as The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz — who made Rockville CA for The WB’s site — there are about 20 made independently on a shoestring, BrimDeForest said. In October, Michael Eisner’s Web production startup Vuguru got a multimillion-dollar capital injection from a unit of Canada’s Rogers Communications Inc. in a deal that gives Rogers the right to use Vuguru content on television, the Web or even its rental video stores in Canada. Rogers’ minority investment will ensure Vuguru can ramp up its production to some 15 projects a year, compared with a half dozen over the last two years combined, said Andy Redman, chief operating officer of The Tornante Company LLC, which owns a majority of Vuguru. The plan is to boost the staff to 30 in a few years, up from two people who currently work on Web projects full-time, he said. Redman compared the growth of the new platform to cable television in the 1980s, when networks like ESPN, CNN and MTV were just getting going, reaching focused audiences at first and then growing. Today, cable networks like AMC put on some of the most critically acclaimed series on TV, such as its Emmy-winning Mad Men, and have largely cast off their reputation as being a receptacle for reruns or shows that failed on broadcast TV. “It was the platform to be joked about,” he said. “Five years later, they’ve realized this whole new medium passed me by.”

Downey and Law recreate classic roles in ‘Sherlock Holmes’ By Susan King

The many faces of Holmes

Los Angeles Times

HOLLYWOOD — Sherlock Holmes, the latest incarnation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s analytical, coke-loving sleuth, opens Christmas Day, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the Baker Street detective and Jude Law as Watson, his cohort in crime-solving. So it’s elementary that the game is afoot to pay homage to previous cinematic Holmeses. Lionsgate is releasing the DVD of the 1979 thriller Murder by Decree, with Christopher Plummer and James Mason as the sleuthing duo. From Dec. 18 through 31, the Paley Center for Media Studies in Beverly Hills is presenting The Blue Carbuncle, a yuletide episode of the respected 1984-94 PBS series Mystery!: Sherlock Holmes, starring Jeremy Brett. Finally, Turner Classic Movies is celebrating Christmas with its Holmes for the Holidays programming, which features 17 Holmes mysteries, including 13 starring Rathbone and Bruce. Rathbone and Bruce began their stint as Holmes and Watson in 1939 when 20th Century Fox produced two handsome thrillers, The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Three years later, the series moved to Universal, where the studio took the sleuths out of the Victorian era and put them in the middle of World War II and the Nazis. Although Conan Doyle purists generally don’t approve of these updated Holmes mysteries, they are still a lot of fun thanks to the chemistry between Rathbone and Bruce and the taut direction of Roy William Neill, who helmed the majority of these low-budget Universal productions. “You have got to love Neill’s lighting and his atmosphere in the films,” says Jan-Christopher Horak, head of the University of California, Los Angeles, archive. “They didn’t spend a huge amount of time on them, but they look great.” Baby-boomer Horak grew up watching these movies. “To me, Basil Rathbone is Sherlock Holmes,” he says. “It was a real career-changing move for Rathbone. He had played mostly villains before that time, but he had the perfect personality to be this slightly acidic, always ironic, articulate, bon-mots-at-the-tip-of-his-tongue-while-hewas-sleuthing character.” Says UCLA preservation officer Robert Gitt, who restored the Universal series: “What is interesting is, at the time they were making these films, Rathbone and

Here are some other actors who have portrayed Sherlock Holmes on TV and film: n Tom Baker: 1982 miniseries The Hound of the Baskervilles. n John Barrymore: 1922’s Sherlock Holmes. n Michael Caine: 1988’s Without a Clue. n Peter Cushing: 1959’s The Hound of the Baskervilles, among others. n William Gillette: 1916’s Sherlock Holmes. n Charlton Heston: 1991’s The Crucifer of Blood. n Ronald Howard: 1954-55 TV series Sherlock Holmes. n Frank Langella: 1981’s Sherlock Holmes. n Christopher Lee: 1962’s Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace, among others. n Raymond Massey: 1931’s The Speckled Band. n Roger Moore: 1976’s Sherlock Holmes in New York. n John Neville: 1965’s A Study in Terror. n Edward Woodward: 1990’s Hands of a Murderer.

Roy William Neill died around the same time the contracts for the radio show were over, and Rathbone wanted to get away from it.” Rathbone had nothing on Ellie Norwood. “He was the actor who played Sherlock Holmes the most,” Horak says of Norwood. “He made something like 30 Sherlock Holmes films in the 1920s in England. He started with a serial in 1921 and then was cranking out six or seven or eight films a year.” The German cinema also embraced Holmes. “Germans loved Conan Doyle and Sherlock,” Horak

says. “There was a whole run of German films back in the teens. They even made a couple during the Nazi period. The French (also) made a respectable number of Sherlock films.” Writer-director Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) is one Holmes purist who rarely has liked the cinematic versions. In the 1970s, he wrote three Holmes novels that were true to the Conan Doyle canon: The West End Horror, The Canary Trainer and The Seven-PerCent-Solution. Meyer adapted the latter for the 1976 film version starring Nicol Williamson as Holmes. “I suppose I rather like Billy Wilder’s The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes,” Meyer says, referring to the 1970

romantic thriller starring Robert Stephens. “I think it’s such an uncharacteristic film for a cynic like Wilder. I think it has this Viennese melancholy romanticism along with his wit.” But for the most part, Meyer says, “When Hollywood tackles Holmes, I think they paint with a very broad and rather insensitive brush. Watson is always portrayed as an idiot, and I never understand why a genius needs to hang out with a buffoon.” With his novels, Meyer says, “I was really sort of intent on putting the needle back in the groove of the record where I thought it was suppose to be. Watson is an average man. I didn’t want to take them out of the time period. And I wasn’t afraid of but rather intrigued by Holmes’ drug addiction.” So what does he think of the film version of Seven PerCent Solution? “I think it’s a pretty good movie,” Meyer says. “I am sort of troubled with my screenplay, which seems too wordy. It may be wordy, but at least they are smart words.”

The top 10 television shows of the decade By Chuck Barney Contra Costa Times

“There’s nothing good to watch on TV.” It’s a familiar complaint, voiced repeatedly since mom and pop purchased their first black-and-white Philco. But if you uttered those words over the past 10 years, you weren’t paying close enough attention — or didn’t have cable. This, after all, was the decade in which television raised its game — when TV junk food gave way to brain food. That might sound ludicrous considering the decade tortured us with Temptation Island, Joe Millionaire and hundreds of other reality TV nightmares. Yes, prime time, as always, served up its share of schlock. But it also served up The Sopranos and Lost and Mad Men and The Wire. It gave us shows that were audacious and ambitious, artful and sophisticated. Shows that embraced mature themes and challenged us to actually think. Give some credit to pop-cultural fragmentation. As television splintered off into an array of niche channels, it may have lost some of its electronichearth power to gather the multitudes in communal unity. On the other hand, the dynamic enabled a new wave of TV auteurs to express their visions without being beholden to the masses. David Simon, for example, could push boundaries with The Wire on HBO while averaging only 1.6 million viewers per episode, which would have earned him a quick cancellation on a broadcast network. And Joss Whedon took advantage of the relative obscurity of the WB (and later, UPN) to offer a very offbeat twist on the teen drama with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That’s not to say the major networks couldn’t occasionally still attract the masses with high-powered programming. ABC’s Lost completely rattled our notions of what television could be. Meanwhile, American Idol (Fox) and Survivor (CBS) proved that reality TV — when wedded to a great concept — could hold us in thrall. Here are our picks for the best TV shows of decade — choices that were made on the basis of artistic achievement, originality and cultural impact. 1. The Sopranos (HBO, 1999-2007): Creator David Chase gave us a protagonist like none we had ever seen: A beefy, baggy-eyed mobster (and family man)

with a hair-trigger temper, a weakness for the ladies and some very serious mommy issues. Impeccably played by James Gandolfini, Tony Soprano was both revolting and riveting. Chase surrounded him with a superlative cast, including the fabulous Edie Falco, and took them all on a wild ride with more twists and curves than a Bada-bing girl. Many shows later would deploy their own Tony-like anti-heroes, but none quite managed to replicate The Sopranos stimulating blend of social commentary, wicked humor, psychological depth and violent intrigue. 2. Lost (ABC, 2004-present): It’s the Rubik’s Cube of TV shows. This planecrash survival drama has had fans obsessed with trying to crack its numberscrunching, monster-chasing, time-tripping mythology. But in addition to an intricate mystery, Lost has offered us a compelling web of personal stories tied to a diverse and ever-engaging group of island castaways. We can hardly wait for the final chapter to unfold.

3. The Wire (HBO, 2002-08): At a time when quick-and-tidy procedural cop dramas were spreading like a virus, Simon’s grim urban masterpiece resisted the simplistic approach, unfolding in novelistic leisure while deftly exploring its flawed characters and pertinent social issues. The result was a monumental achievement that was as rewarding as it was challenging. 4. Mad Men (AMC, 2007-present): Creator Matthew Weiner could have immersed his 1960s-era drama in sugarcoated nostalgia. But to his credit, he instead plunged us deep into the dark side of the American dream, exposing the lies behind our idealized pop-cultural imagery and the emotional scars that come with unbridled self-indulgence. Don Draper and his booze-guzzling, skirtchasing cohorts not only demonstrate how much we have changed as a society, but how much we haven’t. 5. American Idol (Fox, 2002-present): Not even Simon Cowell could have pre-

dicted how big this show would become. Blending glitzy entertainment with heart-tugging stories, a parade of deluded oddballs (bless you, William Hung), and a heaping dose of Simon’s snark, Idol became No. 1 with a bullet. Along the way, it changed not just television, but the music industry and the star-making process. 6. Deadwood (HBO, 2004-06): At first glance, David Milch’s violent and vulgar saga recalled a TV era when the Western was king. But this complex series shot gaping holes in all the innocent illusions, cartoonish heroism and open-range romance traditionally associated with the genre. At its heart was Milch’s wonderfully theatrical dialogue and an astonishing performance by Ian McShane as the grotesquely sinister Al Swearengen. 7. Sex and the City (HBO, 1998-2004): Yes, much of it was about the shagging and the shopping. But Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her sassy gal pals also gave us a moving portrait of all-for-one friendship — the unbreakable bond shared by four soul mates. And that’s something every viewer can admire, even if they don’t wear Manolo Blahniks. 8. Arrested Development (Fox, 200306): A perfect show for the post-Enron era, this sitcom about a family of wealthy buffoons done in by their own greed was so fresh and bizarre and bubbling with larcenous wit that we were stunned to find it on broadcast television. No wonder it didn’t last long. Let’s hope the Bluths wind up on the big screen very soon. 9. Friday Night Lights (NBC/DirecTV, 2006-present): We’re still leading the cheers for this big-hearted football drama that happens to be about so much more than football. Lights deftly delves into the hopes and dreams of its small-town characters with the kind of emotional honesty rarely seen in prime time. Meanwhile, Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton have given us television’s most natural and realistic depiction of marriage. 10. The Daily Show With Jon Stewart (Comedy Central, 1999-present): The smirky Stewart may not have been the show’s first anchor, but under his reign, the faux newscast gained a sharper edge and greater cultural relevance. In skewering the media and the people the media cover, he and his band of merry jesters have not only amused us, they’ve informed us.

PBS to spotlight Patti Smith’s ‘P.O.V.’ By Luaine Lee McClatchy-Tribune News Service

PASADENA, Calif. — Poet and punk musician Patti Smith may have hibernated for 16 years, but she’s back stronger than ever. Once called the “godmother of punk,” Smith is best known for her song,

“Because the Night,” which she co-wrote with Bruce Springsteen, and her constant efforts to communicate through her voice, words and performance art. On Dec. 30 Smith will be the subject of a documentary on PBS’ P.O.V. called Patti Smith: Dream of Life, filmed by her friend

and professional photographer Steven Sebring. Though Smith was at her peak at the end of the ’70s, she wasn’t like many of her peers who were wasted on drugs and alcohol and strung out for the rest of their lives. “I withdrew from the public eye in 1979 and went to Detroit and got married and had a family,” she says. “And my husband and I — he had been in the (band) MC5, and both of us wanted our children to have a traditional childhood, which didn’t include being dragged from place to place on the road. So we decided to live a simpler life.” That was fine while it lasted. But her spouse, guitarist Fred “Sonic” Smith, died suddenly at 45. “When my husband passed away in late ’94, I had to start a new life. I had to make a living for my children. And the thing I knew best was performing,” she says. “So I was asked by Bob Dylan to tour with him. Allen Ginsberg had told him of my fate, and a lot of people sort of rallied to help me,” says Smith, who’s wearing a white men’s shirt, black tie, black pants and cowboy boots. “And I went on the road for a tour with him. And he really encouraged me to come back into the fold and to perform for the people. So I did, as best I could, within my children’s school schedule.” Leaving at the top of her game wasn’t easy. “It was a difficult decision, but one that I’ve never regretted. I think that we all have to evolve as human beings and I ... had done what I had set out to do in rock ’n’ roll in 1979, and that was to create

space for new people. And I thought that it was time for me to learn new things, to evolve as a human being, and to commit myself to the person that I loved and to my children. I wanted my children to know who I was, that I was their mother, that I wasn’t someone who was absent all of the time that they saw in newspapers or magazines. I wanted them to know me simply as their mother. And both of my kids will tell you that that’s what they think of me, as their mom. The rest of it, they find perhaps interesting or amusing, but I’m Mom first.” Her son, Jackson, is now 27 and her daughter, Jesse, is 22. Though Smith is considered an early punk icon, she says her work melded rock ’n’ roll with the newer form of music. “We’re more like the bridge between traditional — and when I say ’traditional,’ I mean it in the highest sense and the most revolutionary sense, but traditional rock ’n’ roll and the — well, the punk movement. Because we were very conscious about ... what we wanted to do when we entered the scene. And what we wanted to do was remind people of the power and the innate power and the fact that rock ’n’ roll did belong to the people, that it was our cultural voice, and we were trying to move from the glamorous, indulgent aspects of rock ’n’ roll in the early ’70s,” she recalls. “I mean, we had lost some of our great artists, and we were very concerned that rock ’n’ roll was going to become engulfed by business, glamour, drugs, celebrity, and we were trying to break through that.”
