images The year in photos: the stories of 2010 The contest:

The 2010 photo of the year:

As the year draws to a close, The Anniston Star’s photographers once again have chosen what they believe are their best images of 2010. Chief photographer Trent Penny, Stephen Gross and Bill Wilson have among them more than 80 years of service at The Star. Newsroom editors and reporters chose a winner from among the photographers’ favorites, and, as has become a tradition in recent years, that winning photo graces the cover of today’s special “Year in Photos” section. On the following pages, you’ll find images that capture gridiron glory, the niceties of nature, friendly faces, solemn ceremonies, noteworthy news, memorable moments, Bama’s beauty and Calhoun County in all of its wide-eyed wonder. Enjoy.

I got a call from Butch Haven of Wellington, who said he had 11 Great Pyrenees puppies. He told me the puppies lined up on a board at feeding time, and he thought it would make a good shot for the paper. I went that afternoon. As he was putting the food out, several chickens came up and started eating the puppies’ food. As if it wasn’t bad enough having to fight 10 littermates for food, now the puppies had to fight off the barnyard chickens as well. I wish I could have gotten all 11 puppies in the shot, but Haver had to put out several bowls of food so all the puppies could eat. — Stephen Gross, Star staff photographer

The Tie for second:

These two photos tied for the second highest vote total. On the left is Bill Wilson’s photo of a country store on old U.S. 431 as the sun sets in the background (8C). On the right, Stephen Gross captures the all-too-familiar scene of Auburn’s Cam Newton celebrating another Auburn victory (10C).

photographer’s choice: I shot this image back in February on a snowy day. I love shooting all kinds of weather pictures, so I ventured out and took a turn down a one-lane road named Forgotten Road in Piedmont. There are only a few houses on this road. When I rounded a curve, I saw a bird fly off from a birdhouse. I have not seen many yellow cardinals before, so I stopped, found a good vantage point and proceeded to wait for the little creature to return. I waited for 20 minutes until it finally returned. Patience is a virtue sometimes when taking photographs. To me, this one was worth the wait. — Trent Penny Trent Penny

photographer’s choice: My favorite photo of 2010 is this country sunset scene in Randolph County. I was returning from covering a murder/suicide and had taken old 431 instead of the regular 431. It was late afternoon, and I came to a crossroads and saw an old store with the Gulf sign and the setting sun. To me, it had that peaceful country feel about it, and I tried my best to capture it. Another favorite of mine is this shot of Cam Newton (Page 3C) scoring a touchdown during the Auburn vs. South Carolina game in September. Cam knew he was going to score, so he decided to do a flying leap into the endzone, to the delight of the Auburn fans. — Bill Wilson

photographer’s choice: This was not an easy shot to get. I’ve shot several Auburn games this year. After every game, shooting photos of Cam Newton got harder and harder, because of all the photographers trying to get the same shot. This game, against Georgia, was the game that Auburn had to win to play for the SEC championship. I knew that, eventually, Cam would go celebrate with the students in the endzone. He did, and directly in front of me. As 20 or so photographers descended on Cam at that spot, I held my ground and put my camera up as high as I could. I got a nice shot of Cam screaming, “We did it!” — Stephen Gross
