stories and letting us “invade your lives!” We just love bragging about this very special place, its people, its places and its fun! And remember, I’m just an email or phone call away for your ideas! And on that note, “Tell on your neighbor,” they’re too modest to do it themselves! This is your opportunity to help showcase what a special place we have! Please call me at 256-299-2115 or email lnation@ dailyhome.com. I just love hearing from my lakeside friends! Thank you all, and happy “end of summer,” sort of…we still have a little time left for the real lakeside experience. But I know, the fall and winter months have their stories, too!

ep, I think we have a line-up of people and places you will love this month! That’s always our goal, and with your help and tips, it seems to always happen-at least I hope so! The list of interesting things and people in and around the lakeside area just never seems to end, and thank goodness! And it’s our pleasure and joy to present as many as possible each month. I’m taking you to “dessertville” this month, even though I don’t “do” dessert-I have enough trouble without them! I created one of my own that I hope is a little on the “not so bad side,” for those of us with “issues,” and brought one in from the incredible and notorious kitchen queen June Winters and also, another of our own Daily Home very special cooking experts, Nell Sinclair, too. These girls know their way around the kitchen, I can attest to that. Then, our writer Shane Dunaway updates you about one of Pell City’s most known and loved people and artists, Jimmie Nell Miller. She’s been working on some new art you just have to see. We all know her talent well, and she just keeps on creating for the sheer joy of it. Our paddler found some interesting folks out on the water, as always, and will share those tales and our writer Kenny Farmer tells you about the return of a long time Pell City standard, Lucky’s Bait and Tackle. He remembers going there as a kid with his dad, as many of you probably do as well. Welcome back Lucky’s! And you’ll hear about a lakeside family who converted their home to accommodate a son with cerebral palsy from writer Elsie Hodnett, and see the home Hugh and Cathy Caudhill created on the shores of Logan Martin at Water’s Edge from our writer Emily Adams. You’ll meet realtor Tracy Boyd who can help you find that perfect spot on the lake and we made a visit to Pell City’s new Special Ice Cream Emporium with writer Chris Norwood. Yum is all I can say. We hope you’re finding a way to enjoy this unusually soggy summer, and we so appreciate you sharing your lake

out on Logan Martin Lake. Ethan had arrived Friday. “I will be leaving Tuesday morning,” he said. Ethan was surprised to meet a writer or newspaper reporter at the end of his grandfather’s pier. Ethan told me he wanted to be a writer. He thought I had a “pretty cool” job paddling around a lake interviewing people for stories. “I love it here,” he said. “I’ve been coming down here since I was a baby.” The older gentleman who took a seat on the chair at the end of the pier chimed in. 8

“You were coming down where before you were born,” said Melvin “Mel” Osinga, Ethan’s 87-year-old grandfather. Mel has lived on Treasure Island, which was really beautiful along the lake, for more than 26 years. Mel grew up in Appleton, Wis., but moved to his lakeside home with his wife, Betty, from New York, about 26 years ago. “My wife’s mother was sick,” he explained. “I could either follow here or go without a wife – I followed her.” Mel said he agreed to moved to Alabama, but only

if they lived on a lake, so they moved to Treasure Island, which is just south of Pell City on the St. Clair County side of Logan Martin Lake. Mel said he lost Betty earlier this year and to hear her husband talk about her, she was quite a woman. “She died in February,” he said. Mel’s son Bob lives with him now. Both Betty and Mel believed in community work. Betty, who was a licensed social worker, volunteered with Lakeside Hospice, which took care of her in her final days. Among other things, she also volunteered with The Children’s Place, when that non-profit first organized. Mel was also active in the community. He volunteered with the New London Volunteer Fire Department for seven or eight years, even helping name the streets in New London. Mel also helped start a community service program in the St. Clair County court system for youth offenders. I could tell Mel really loved living on the lake. The lake can get a little busy on summer weekends, but it is so peaceful during the week. Mel has always been around water. As a child, he was a member of the YMCA, and eventually became a lifeguard for the 10

nonprofit at the age of 16. Mel eventually retired from the Brooklyn, N.Y. YMCA after working for more than 33 years. He oversaw youth sports but spent his later years with the YMCA in administration. We talked a little about whitewater kayaking. Mel used to paddle a canoe and did some whitewater paddling, so we both shared an interest in the water and in paddling sports. I really liked Mel, and I plan to visit him again. I met and talked to a lot of people on the lake that Sunday as I made my way around Treasure Island, including a few local folks, Dora Carter, Stacey Taylor, Wanda Guthrie, Kevin Rogers and Robbie Angel. I also met Gina Wilhite, who actually lives on Treasure Island with her 21-year-old son Justin. “She’s my best friend,” Gina said, as she put her arm around his friend, Debbie Pickett, of Kimberly to pose for a picture. Debbie comes up and visits all the time, Gina said. 12

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - August 2013

Gina said she generally has a crowd every weekend at their lake house during the summer months. “Everybody is always welcome, as long as you act appropriately,” she said. “That’s my rule.” That Sunday everyone was enjoying barbeque sandwiches and just hanging out socializing. “We moved here 11 years ago,” Gina said, who is originally from Clay. “It’s so peaceful here.” Gina said she works in Birmingham, but it’s worth the drive living on the lake. “You can come out here at night, and you won’t hear anything,” she said. “We’ll build a campfire at night at the edge of the water and just relax.” What a life, but that’s life living on the lake. I can’t wait to get back out there for another paddling trip down Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail. So until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Pell City Library through August. Jimmy Nell Miller, a local painting enthusiast, created the exhibit, one of her many goals and achievements during a long journey into the world of art.

Miller’s new series is on display at the Pell City Public Library.

“It’s more of a glorified hobby for me than anything,” Miller said. “I wouldn’t consider my work as professional as some artists out there.” Miller first became interested in painting in the third grade, and as she honed her craft while progressing through school under the tutelage of her high school art teacher, Dorothy Mays, she received a four-year art scholarship from Auburn University. But college wasn’t the first thing on her mind when she graduated high school in 1955. “I got married two weeks out of high school, so I did not take the scholarship,” Miller said. “Mays was so disappointed I didn’t take my scholarship, she cried and refused to attend my wedding because she thought I was making a terrible mistake. I do regret not getting my formal education in art.” After Miller’s marriage, her family moved to Puerto Rico 16

for three years and spent nearly a decade away from Pell City before returning in 1965. Her desire to paint continued to follow her. “I did some painting while I was in Puerto Rico,” Miller said. “It was a really beautiful island.” Despite not attending college, Miller still maintained a keen interest in improving her skills and participated in numerous training seminars before she began working in interior design in 1978. For more than 20 years, she used the principles learned through her training to hold down a successful career. “I found my art training to be very helpful because it taught me the use of color and balance,” Miller said. “It all applies to interior design as well as it applies to trying to execute a painting on canvas.” During her training years and career years, Miller gathered inspiration for her exhibit through scouring

magazines, brochures and other sources for boat pictures so she could one day put her brush to canvas and provide her interpretation of the imagery. “You should always try to change it by at least 30 percent if it’s an actual painting,” Miller said. “Some of the photographs used to create the paintings in the exhibit are my own photos, but not all of them.” According to Miller, it took nearly two years to complete all the paintings. Thirteen of her paintings were completed within a six-month window, but her “Venice” painting, the prize of her collection, occupied the bulk of her time due to the style chosen. “’Venice’ is the only oil painting in my exhibit,” Miller said. “The others are acrylic on canvas. Oil paintings are a much slower process because the paintings require a longer drying time.” Her preferred styles of painting are oil and acrylic, but they are not the only styles Miller has used to paint. “At one time, I would do watercolors,” Miller said. “I stopped painting in that style because the paintings had to 18

be custom-framed and the framing was something I didn’t enjoy about the process.” Miller credited New Southern Impressionist Painter JoAnn Williams Walker for reaffirming her interest in oil paintings after attending her week-long seminar in Highlands, N.C., six years ago. She doesn’t mind sharing her artistic passion with others either. From 2002-2006, Miller taught an art class to Alzheimer’s patients in a local nursing home in Pell City. “We just wanted to give them an outlet for expression,” Miller said. Miller stated she doesn’t shy away from any subject to paint, but some of her favorites involve boats, sunflowers and Tuscany landscapes. “I’m just driven to paint,” Miller said. “The important thing is to just paint. You really learn by just painting. Some days, you’ll create something nice and some days, you won’t. You always learn from the application of your skills.”

Miller’s love of art has provided a lifetime of creative fulfillment.

orn premature, with doctors holding little hope he would see his third birthday, 37-year-old Michael Boozer now enjoys life on the lake in a house built to accommodate his needs. “When Michael was born 37 years ago, he decided to make his entrance into the world almost three months early,” said Angie Boozer, Michael’s mother. “He weighed 3 pounds, but in less than a week, he was down to one-anda-half-pounds and his entire body could fit into his dad, 20

David’s, hand.” Angie said when Michael was 9-days-old, he contracted an infection which caused him to have a high fever resulting in a massive brain bleed. This caused him to have Cerebral Palsy. “The doctors held out little hope that Michael would ever see his third birthday and that if he did live, his quality-oflife would be poor,” she said. “They said he would be blind, would never talk or walk and would have little-to-no brain

function. They suggested that the most humane choice for our family would be to institutionalize him until his death. That option was not in our family plan, nor was it in the plan of the master designer.” Angie said due to his premature birth, Michael grew at a slow rate. Several months after his birth, he began to have seizures. “These seizures were so severe that his little body would convulse so bad he knocked holes in the wall of his room from the force of the baby bed slamming against the wall,” she said. “He averaged 200-400 seizures a day. Again, the doctors recommended the same thing—to put him in a home.” Angie said putting Michael in a home was not a consideration. “Our family decided that God had a greater plan for this young man and he was going to live and be a productive member of this world,” she said. “After the decision to take him off all medications, his seizures stopped and to this day he is seizure and medication free.” Angie said Michael began school when he was 3 in an early intervention program for special needs children. Twoand-a-half years after Michael was born, the family had their second child, Andrea. “Andrea became Michael’s best friend and buddy,” she said. “Andrea’s relationship with Michael helped him to

grow and learn as he had a desire to keep up with her.” Michael graduated from a regular high school with two diplomas, and worked for four years at a local Walmart. Angie said nine years later, the youngest member of the family, William “Billy,” was born. “By this time, Michael was in middle school and learning every day,” she said. “He took on the role of big brother and loved the job.” Angie said her parents, Max and Louise Briggs, moved to Logan Martin Lake in the late 1970s. “Whenever possible, we would visit them,” she said. “We loved the area and the people who lived on the lake. Our dream was to one day build a home there on the lake and retire.” Angie said the family was living in Douglasville, Ga., in a two-story home with three sets of stairs. “Needless to say, that home was not very user friendly for Michael and his wheelchair,” she said. “In 2008, my dad came to visit and told us about a home right down the street that had gone up for sale that day. It was a small cabin hidden in the woods. We decided to buy it and have a place to stay when we came to visit—but again God had other plans.” Angie said not long after purchasing the cabin, they realized God was leading them to move to Logan Martin Lake to help take care of her parents.

Michael Boozer is pictured in the elevator installed to give him direct access to the garage and family vehicle.

“We found a buyer for our Douglasville home in a matter of weeks, but we were trying to figure out how to move from a 3,000-square-foot home to a 1,000-square-foot cabin,” she said. David said when the family decided to move to the lake, he knew the house would not work for their family because there was not enough room and it needed upgrades to allow Michael access to all areas. David, who has a degree in architectural engineering, began to put together plans for a home that would function for Michael. “I work in the field of metal buildings and metal roofing, so I decided to build a home that would not only be 22

accessible for Michael but would be virtually maintenance free,” he said. “I teamed up with a family friend, Jerry Hughes, who also lived on the lake and was a builder. We put our heads together and figured out how to build a metal home.” David said the home’s frame is metal, the siding is metal and the roof is metal. “Jerry was a great help seeing us through this construction process,” he said. “He recently passed away after a brief illness, and our family greatly misses his presence. Jerry told everyone that this home was his pride and joy, and more fun to build than any home he had ever constructed.” David said one of the most important

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - August 2013

aspects of the home was the need for wide open spaces where Michael could roam from room to room in his wheelchair. “The home would incorporate the old cabin into the structure, but we had to figure out how to transition from the old structure to the new structure without elevation changes what would hamper wheelchair access,” he said. “With my structural knowledge and Jerry’s help there are no barriers between the two joined structures.” The new home incorporated many other features so Michael could enjoy the lake. The windows were all positioned at a lower elevation so Michael could see what was happening on the lake and from the street. Glass panels were incorporated into the deck, so that railings did not hamper Michael’s view when sitting on the deck. The screened porch was raised and floor-to-ceiling screened panels were installed so if he was sitting on the porch he could see everything. Inside the house, all hallways and doors were widened so access to any room is easy. A large bathroom was designed that allowed a rolling shower chair so Michael could easily be bathed and feel secure. The TV in the great room was mounted on the wall at a height and size that allows Michael to watch TV easily. “One of the best additions to the house was an elevator,” Angie said. “REMI Home Elevators came and installed a residential elevator that allowed Michael to go to the apartment in the basement. It also gives Michael access to the van in the garage, which keeps him dry if it’s raining.” David said the elevator was important because rain or inclement weather impacted whether Michael could get in the family vehicle. With the elevator, he can access the van in all weather conditions. “When the family comes, Andrea

and Ken, with daughters Hannah and Hallie; and Billy and Dannielle with their daughter, Stella, Michael is happiest,” she said. “He loves being in this home where he has so much room to visit and enjoy family and friends.

When you ask him if he wants to move back to Georgia, he gives a resounding (No!)” Angie said they are currently working on a new project to make life even easier for Michael.

“With the help of Tradesman Company, a new boathouse was designed to allow access to the pontoon boat for Michael and his wheelchair,” she said. “We are grateful to Alabama Power Company for allowing us to build an access drive so that Michael and his chair can be driven straight to the boathouse, and to David and Fred Casey, with Tradesman, who teamed up with the design. Now there are no obstacles that prohibit Michael from enjoying the lake he loves so much with our family.” David said the family recently completed the structure for the new boathouse and is in the process of adapting the topography of the lake side to accommodate Michael’s access. “This will make the existing landscape wheelchair accessible,” he said. Angie said recently their church, Hepzibah Baptist Church, even helped make his life there more accessible by removing a section of pew from an area of the church seating so Michael’s wheelchair could fit comfortably in the pew instead of him sitting in the aisle. “Michael truly believes he is home and our family feels we are finally home, where everyone can be happy and Michael can find the joy he so greatly deserves—a home that works for him and a place where he can live in comfort.”

his venture into dessert land is a rare one for me, I have “figure” issues without going there…but here goes! I made one up that I don’t think is too terrible on the waistline, and even my husband said “Boy that looks good!’ when I got finished. And I do think you’ll like it. We’ll call this the “Desperation Fruit Layered Thing Anyone Can Make.” But then I got to thinking that I needed some real power on this dessert adventure, so I went to the real pros. Those would be two of my co-workers, the notorious Kitchen Queens June Winters and Nell Sinclair. June has been with our newspaper, The Daily Home, for a million years-well, I’m exaggerating a little bit here, and she’s done everything from chase down fires and wrecks to writing her fabulous feature stories about people and 26

places in our area to writing the Lakeside Living house feature for I don’t know how long and, well, I just know you remember her popular “Homefolks” column. She sort of calls herself “retired” now, but she’s really not. She still does her food page on Wednesdays and pops us a column or a feature story when something strikes her fancy-and we’re so glad! Nell is our newspaper layout expert, she’s the one who has the job of aligning the ads to the pages everyday, and for all those special sections we do as well. It’s a very detailed and important job, one bad move and you could have a really angry advertiser on your hands. She’s been with our newspaper for 29 years, and has done several other jobs here along the way. So now that I’ve introduced everyone, let’s launch into Dessertvillle with my creation…

When life turns golden... Always There Provides the Silver Lining. At 93-years old, Jack Tipton’s life is golden. “Being able to remain in his home is very important to him,” says Jack’s daughter Jen Tipton. “Always There In-Home Care makes that possible. He dearly loves his caregiver, Amelia.” For over a year, Always There’s Amelia Gibson has nurtured a special relationship with Mr. Tipton that transcends helping maintain his home and preparing his meals. They have become friends. In fact, when the dapper Mr. Tipton takes his two walks per day, he carries his cane in one hand and Amelia on the other. Jen says, “We can’t imagine having anyone else care for him.” Like many adult children of aging parents, Jen has a busy personal life, which presents challenges in her ability to offer constant attention to her father. Always There offers Jen a solution - call it a silver lining - to that cloudy issue. My father is not always easy to deal with. I tried other companies in the area, and Always There has been by far the best. In particular their Care Management services have been a huge help with planning and decision-making. I couldn’t be more pleased with their dependability and service.” For more information about Always There, call 205-824-0224, or visit our website at www.alwaysthereinc.com for a free online assessment of your needs.

Before you hire an in-home care company, be sure to ask: Who is responsible for payroll taxes, Social Security, and liability insurance on the worker? Who sends a replacement when my regular caregiver calls off sick? Is the company insured, licensed, and bonded? Are caregivers employees of the company or merely independent contractors? Call today, or visit our website for more information.

Desperation Fruit Layered Thing Anyone Can Make What you need: Two boxes (small) of instant lemon pudding-I suggest using the real deal here, that sugar free kind is sort of “twangy”. A small container of light whipped cream A small angel food cake, sliced and cut into pieces Two kiwis Half a pint of blueberries Half a pint of strawberries-more if you want-sliced Half a pint of raspberries (These amounts are given for a medium sized bowl that would serve eight to 10 people-if they’re not too greedy).

What you do Make pudding according to package directions and chill for a few minutes in the refrigerator. When set, spoon a couple of spoonfuls into the bottom of the bowl, the add sprinkles of the different fruits, except for the kiwi. Top with cake chunks or slices and repeat until you run out of the ingredients. Place kiwi slices around the edge of the bowl, chill until ready to serve. From June Winters: My cousin Thelma Crump’s Lemon Ice Box Pie is definitely her family’s summer favorite dessert–hands down! Thelma’s Lemon Ice Box Pie What you need:

mixture and if the lemon taste is not distinct, add a little more lemon juice, (about one tablespoon each time) and taste again. You must continue the process until the lemon flavor is distinct. Let the lemon-milk mixture sit in the bowl for several minutes or until the lemon juice thickens the milk. Pour into the vanilla wafer crust, cover and chill. This makes a lot of pie, but you’ll be surprised at how fast it goes. Also, it keeps well for several days in the refrigerator. If you want a smaller pie you can adjust ingredients. The best part is that no one ever gets tired of seeing it on the table. It’s always a highlight, and Thelma says her children and grandchildren love it the year round! Thelma lives in Pell City. She has two children. Her daughter is Connie Goodgame and her son is Jimmy Crump. She has four grandchildren, Jason Goodgame, Jana Masters, Greg Crump and Jamie McLean. There are eight greatgrands. She attends Harkey’s Chapel Church, and is very active in the church’s Quilting Circle. She has a sister, Dot Brown, and they practically inseparable. Several years ago, I came across this Diabetic Lemon Ice Box Pie recipe. If you don’t have diabetics in the family, hold on to the recipe. I promise you will need it sooner or later – and – it’s a delicious dessert for dieters. And from Nell... Quick Coconut Cream Pie What you need:

Two boxes vanilla wafers Three cans Eagle Brand condensed milk One-half cup lemon juice, (bottled) One stick butter

What you do: Crush 1 cup of vanilla wafers by placing them in a plastic bag and rolling with a heavy object. Remove the crumbs and place them in an 11x9-inch Pyrex dish. Slice the butter over the top of the crumbs and place the baking dish in a 300 degree oven until butter is melted and crumbs are warm. Remove the pan and gently press the butter into the crumbs with the palm of your hand. Use the other box of wafers, (whole), to line the sides of the dish. Set aside. In a mixing bowl combine the three cans of condensed milk with the lemon juice–and here’s the secret: Taste the Paint & Body Shop • Audio • Tinting Truck & Car Accessories • Towing

(For diabetics, use fat free and sugar free pudding and fat free milk and sugar free Cool Whip). One small package instant vanilla pudding One cup cold milk One eight ounce carton Cool Whip Three-fourths to one cup flaked coconut (toasted and divided in half)

One baked pastry shell

What you do: Mix pudding and milk on low speed with mixer for two minutes. Fold in half the Cool Whip and half the coconut. Pour into pie crust and then spread the remaining Cool Whip over the top. Sprinkle the top with the remaining coconut and chill before serving.

Lakeside Living in Style

Hugh and Kathy Caudill love their hilltop home on Logan Martin Lake.

The Best of Both Worlds The Caudills find perfect compromise of land and water Story by EMILY ADAMS Photos by BOB CRISP

P

erched on a wooded hill in Alpine is a two-story dwelling that combines the openness of a tree house with the advantages of a lakeside getaway. For Hugh and Kathy Caudill, this distinctive combination was exactly their intention when they built their 3,200 square foot home more than a decade ago and has proven a perfect compromise for the eclectic couple. “Being from California, Hugh had to see water,” Kathy said. “Being from Texas, I don’t care anything about water, except to drink. I wanted hills and trees.” Thus, their forested lot within eyeshot of the glistening lake was “a really good compromise,” Hugh said. “Everybody got what they wanted.” Hugh and Kathy most recently lived in Port Aransas, Texas, but have also lived in upstate New York – moves largely determined by their careers (Kathy as a marketing manager for Xerox, and Hugh as a software design

engineer). By the time they “happily” retired 13 years ago, the welltraveled pair was ready to settle into a home that was all their own. Only one important question remained. Where? They spent months scouring Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and finally Alabama, where they were drawn to Logan Martin Lake by the recommendation of family members who live in the area. “We had about given up, but this was the one place we found, and we found it at the right time,” Kathy recalled. “We were driving around and just chanced on this little three-foot sign that said, ‘Waters Edge that way,’ and Hugh said, ‘I’m going to find out where that goes.” It was 1999, and only three lots had been sold in the new subdivision. Their sights were on the top of the hill. “We chose the hill because during the summer, it’s like living in a tree house, and during the winter we have an

absolutely gorgeous lake view,” Kathy said. “When the sun sets, it glints on the water and we can see it through the trees without being right on the water.” They built the house in 2002 while living in New York with the aid of periodic visits and constant communication with the architects Dungan and Nequette and builder Larry Reams. Their two bedroom, two and a half bathroom home was specifically designed to let the outside in and maintain a spacious, contemporary feel throughout while also being as low-maintenance as possible. “We like a lot of light and to bring the outside into the house,” Kathy said. “I get a change of decoration three times a year. I get the green in the summer, the autumn colors, and in the winter, we have the beautiful skeletons of the trees.” The pair, who became full-time Alabama residents in October, also designed the house with no straight lines. “I’m a very asymmetrical person, and I told the architect that,” Kathy said. “I want balance, but no symmetry. He told me he was that way, too, so it worked out really good.” On the outside, the home is fitted with vinyl windows and a tan, textured PermaCrete surface. A winding driveway is shaded with lush trees and foliage that add both privacy and beauty. Entering the front door, guests are welcomed by a calming water feature and often the soft sounds of jazz music. The

space leads into an open living room and kitchen with nearly panoramic views of the outdoors that Kathy says is great for entertaining. “This is really a party house to some extent,” she said, noting that she and Hugh are well-known for their margarita and brisket parties. “This is the entertaining area. We’ll have drinks in here, and then everybody moves out onto the deck.” The living space is decorated with gold-accented contemporary art and furniture, including a built-in lighted display full of pottery and collectibles. The room also features 14-foot ceilings, plenty of seating, a moveable bar, a television and a fireplace. Adjoining this area is a spacious porch with a retractable awning and all the usual outdoor furnishings. “We don’t like the traditional look,” Kathy said of their modern décor. “It’s too heavy with the lightness. I like the lightness to be felt in everything.” That airiness continues into the kitchen, with pickled birch cabinets, dark granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and a butcher block island. Other details include a retractable downdraft on the island cooktop; double ovens, one that also acts as a microwave; a central vacuum system; raised appliances for easier access; and a warming drawer to heat cold dishes and bread. “I designed the kitchen, and I take credit for that,” said August 2013 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

Kathy, who typically cooks every day save for weekends and holidays. “The architect didn’t always agree with me, but I did my research, and I knew what I wanted.” They forwent cabinets in the kitchen to allow for additional windows, and, in both the kitchen and living room, installed wellhidden Florida shades that allow them to see out while effectively blocking strong sunlight. A hallway off the kitchen leads to an office, filled with – you guessed it – plenty of windows, a half bathroom and an extralarge pantry that boasts automatic lights and long rows of storage. The area also includes a utility room with extra cabinets that hold leftover kitchen accessories, spacious countertops and a raised washer and dryer. Adjoining the living room is the master suite. The bedroom includes a two-person seating area, and a walk-in closet that is the envy of many with two built-in chests of drawers and walls lined with shelves and hanging space. “This is what most of the women want,” Hugh said. In the bathroom is a therapeutic Jacuzzi tub, a shower and his and hers vanities. A door leads to a small outdoor porch ideal for

morning coffee. Downstairs is a guest bedroom and bathroom, a second patio, as well as an exercise room and Kathy’s art studio, where she creates watercolor and acrylic paintings. The couple, married for 28 years, has an obvious love for art, and guests may be surprised to learn that every painting in the home, except for two, was painted by Kathy herself. A hobby she delved into after retirement, she is an accomplished painter and member of an art gallery in Texas. Hugh complements her talents by matting and framing her work. On the whole, the Caudills’ home is an unmistakable reflection of their varied backgrounds, made better by a nice location and friendly neighbors, Kathy said.

“Up here, it’s like we’re almost alone. It’s so wonderful and so quiet and peaceful,” she said. “This is a great neighborhood. Everybody has a golf cart, and we just go to each others’ houses and entertain ourselves. We have a good time here.” The couple enjoys the lake with

an occasional boat ride, but the surroundings, the small-town feel and the picturesque changing of the seasons is what they most enjoys about their little piece of Alabama. “We think Alabama is one of the best-kept secrets in the country,” Kathy said. “We love it.”

The Special Place serves Nathan’s Famous all-beef hot dogs as well as the Royal sausage dog, which is made right in Pell City, just a few blocks away. Either can be topped with chili, cheese or cole slaw, and nachos are coming soon. More savory items will be added to the menu during the winter months, but for now, as the name implies, the focus is on ice cream and other sweet treats. “We have banana splits, warm brownie sundaes, milkshakes and smoothies,” she said. “The smoothies are made with fruit and either Greek yogurt and honey or ice cream. We can also add protein to any smoothie. Roberts said he stuck with the name “Lucky’s” for “nostalgic purposes.” “Everybody knows Lucky’s,” he said. “It was a really big store back in the day. Everybody who comes in tells old stories and talks about how great it was. I experienced it. I’d come down and get my reels cleaned, I bought several fishing poles and all my tackle. I mean, this was your stop on the way to Logan Martin.” A day of fishing last spring eventually led Roberts to start his business. Roberts was fishing on Logan Martin when he ran out

of the bait he was using. After searching all over town without finding what he needed, he began to wonder why there was not a tackle shop in the area. Soon thereafter, Roberts chose the old Lucky’s building as the location of his new venture. “This lake needed a bait and tackle store,” he said. Roberts said that he can even help his customers with what’s biting that day. He says most of the lures he sells are lures he’s had others tell him about. “I can tell you what people are buying, what people are talking about,” he said. Roberts says he tries to stock items that are being used now, in the summer season. “As the seasons come along, you get that stuff in for that season. Pretty soon you have a whole big tackle store with whatever selection they need.” August 2013 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

said. “There’s a lot of sacrifice and anxiety. I mean the cards are stacked against you. The success rate is very, very small in this type of business.” Roberts said it was his mother, Debbie Cearley, who talked him into sticking with his dream, reminding him of what a great opportunity it was. “She said if I missed it, I’d be mad at myself for a long time,” he said. “If I passed by this road and saw that somebody else had opened it, I’d really be kicking myself. “ Cearley not only talked her son into seeing out his vision for a bait and tackle store, she also bought into the business. “We’re a family business,” Aaron said. “She’s a big part of it.” Cearley is more than the co-owner, she also works weekends and handles the accounting. In addition to the duties she performs at Lucky’s, she also provides a lot of encouragement to her son. “I’m real proud of him,” she said. “He’s doing a great job.” Cearley added, “When you love something as much as Aaron does his new business, you can do nothing but succeed.” Even though Roberts and Cearley are starting slow, they have big plans for the store that was once well known by many who visited and lived in the Logan Martin area. “We’re hoping to return it to its former glory one day,” said Roberts.

As a small business owner, Roberts says that he plans to start slow and gradually build his business. “Starting out as small as we did, we didn’t want to put $30,000 or $40,000 worth of merchandise in here and it just sit,” he said. “That’s a lot of money to have tied up. So to see what’s selling, you’ve got to have the help of the fishing community. For the first couple of months, I’ve been making a list of what everybody wants. You just kind of learn from the customers.” Roberts said that he already has some regular customers and that the community has been very supportive so far. “There were times when I thought, ‘this (merchandise) looks too slim,’” he said. “People are going to walk in, realize I don’t have much, and not want to shop here. It’s really been the opposite.” Roberts said he hopes to add guns and hunting accessories in the future. “We’ll probably have a small selection of firearms, handguns, rifles,” he said. “Some guns, some hunting, but mostly fishing tackle. I would love for it to be a full-fledged sporting goods store again, but right now, that is just a dream.” Roberts said he will also carry boating supplies such as bulbs, motor oil and trolling motors. While Roberts is happy with his decision to re-open Lucky’s, there was a time when he almost gave up. “There were definitely times when I wanted to quit,” he
