From the editor…

A

s I write, ambitious boatbuilders across the lake area are winding the last few feet of duct tape off thousands of spools, coaxing the last few sprays of paint out of hundreds of cans, and in other undocumented ways finishing off their corrugated cardboard creations for the sixth annual Float Yer Boat regatta in Pell City. As you read, however, the regatta — and the boats — will be history. Some will float, some will sink, but none will remain as wrecks on the bottom of the lake. The boatbuilding teams have to remove all the components from the lake, no matter how waterlogged they become. While I am looking forward to my first cardboard regatta, Elsie Hodnett and David Atchison are veterans. Elsie built our boat again this year, her third, and David again will pilot it in the regatta. Knowing that our printing schedule would keep us from providing stroke-by-stroke coverage of the race this year, we decided instead to detail the construction process. Our one-man fishing boat is one of the smallest, while Eissmann Automotive’s Viking longboat is one of the largest. Elsie built ours by herself, while Eissmann employed a team of engineers. In this edition, Elsie describes how both boats emerged from stacks of cardboard, rolls of duct tape and hundreds of hours of kneeling, reaching and bending. Ah, well, now it’s September, the regatta is over, and we all can relax. But I’ll bet you the guys over at Eissmann already have their next boat on the drawing board. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Elsie does too. That’s life, Lakeside style. Geni Certain, Editor

T

he teenage boy looked down from the high cliffs toward the waters of Logan Martin Lake. “I sat up there five, six minutes,” said Ethan Bones, 16, of Lincoln. “You’re sitting there asking yourself, ‘Oh, man, what am I doing?” Ethan and his friend Dylan Ochoa of Talladega first saw one of the most popular areas of Logan Martin Lake, The Cliffs, July 4. Today, they’d come back to climb, and to jump. Boats normally are anchored near The Cliffs, along the Talladega County side of the lake. People anchor and watch as young and old climb up the cliffs, to one of two rocky diving platforms. One jumping spot is only about 10 feet or so above the water. The higher diving spot towers an estimated 40-plus feet. “It seems like it takes forever,” said Ethan, who was making another jump off the top spot at The Cliffs. “You feel like you’re never going to hit the water.”

Ethan Bones leaps off the side of The Cliffs.

Ethan said the distance looks much greater from the top of the cliffs looking down toward the water than from the water looking up to the cliffs. “Once you’re up there though, there’s no turning back,” Ethan said. “You can’t climb back down.” He said the divers wear lightweight shoes to protect the bottoms of their feet, not from the rocky cliffs, but from the impact when their feet hit the water. “It will hurt your feet,” Ethan said. “From up there, people look like ants down on the water.” To me, it looks dangerous. A misstep could send someone tumbling down the rocky cliffs and into the water, injured or worse — but who am I to preach. I’ve always had a daredevil lurking inside me, and if I were 40 years younger, you would probably find me jumping from the side of that tall hill. It looks awfully inviting for an adrenaline junkie. “You get a rush,” Ethan said. “You get a big adrenalin rush.” Ethan said jumping off the cliffs really is not as dangerous as it looks. “You just have to make sure you jump at least six

or seven feet out,” he said. “You just need to make sure you jump out far enough.” I watched as Ethan jumped from the top spot of the cliff. He looked as though he were freefalling from the sky without a parachute. He has become much braver, leaping from the towering cliff without a blink of an eye. He’s jumped from the spot now about 20-30 times. I’d heard about The Cliffs some time ago and wanted to see first-hand about what all the fuss was about. So when I launched my kayak from Lincoln Harbor, I made a beeline to The Cliffs. I just wanted to make sure I hit the spot along my travels down Logan Martin Lake, part of the

Alabama Scenic River Trail, in my kayak. It was worth the trip. Someone told me you never know who you will see at The Cliffs. Well, it was like a Daily Home reunion that Sunday afternoon. “Hey, is that David Atchison with The Daily Home,” a man’s voice called out from behind me. “Yep,” I said. I couldn’t turn around in my kayak, and I had a camera in my hand taking pictures of Ethan and his friends jumping from the rocks. “That’s not the David Atchison I worked with,” the voice said. “The David Atchison I worked with didn’t have all that gray hair.”

“The newspaper business will turn your hair gray,” I said. Finally, I was able to turn around to see who was talking to me. At first I did not recognize him, but it hit me when he swam closer. It was Jay Milam, 35, of Refroe. Jay worked in the pressroom at The Daily Home office in Talladega, before the company moved the printing presses to Anniston. Jay’s sort of filled out a little bit in the 10-15 years since I last saw him. He now works for the Alabama Service and Assistance Patrol, driving along Alabama highways and lending a hand to stranded motorists. I also ran into none other than our former editor and publisher Carol Pappas of Pell City at The Cliffs. I hadn’t seen her in a while, so it was great visiting with her. I can’t help but miss her. She’s sort of like family, but that’s the way it is working for The Daily Home. Monday morning, when I got back to the office, I received an e-mail from Brittany Morris, our classified sales representative in Sylacauga. Brittany said she had seen me at The Cliffs. I couldn’t believe it. I told her she should have said

something to me. Her sister, Vickie Martin, also was jumping from The Cliffs, but at the lower spot. I took a couple of pictures of Vickie and didn’t even realize at the time who she was. The people I meet are always one of the highlights of these kayaking trips, and boy, I met and saw a bunch of folks on this trip. When I headed back to the Lincoln Harbor beach area, I also met Scott and Tara Richardson of Cropwell.

They were taking a break from riding their personal watercraft. They also have a pontoon boat they use when out on the lake with friends. “This is for us to enjoy,” Tara said looking at their personal watercraft. They both said they love lakeside living, even during the fall and winter. Scott offered to give me a hand carrying my kayak up a hill to my truck, but it’s so light, I told him I could manage it myself. Diana Gibbs, the sales executive for Lincoln Harbor, was nice enough to let me launch from the new residential community. Lincoln Harbor currently has 80 condominiums and 12 townhomes. There are plans to build more townhomes and family estate homes on the 170-acre tract. The view from Lincoln Harbor is spectacular, especially late in the day and early in the morning. The new development has a whopping 7,000 feet of shoreline. All in all, it was a very enjoyable paddling trip for me, and I look forward to my next adventure. Until then, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Will It Float? If these boats don’t float, then sinking spectacularly is the next best thing.

By ELSIE HODNETT Laura Nation-Atchison

E

ach year the call goes out and the gauntlet is picked up. The challenge: Create a cardboard and duct tape boat that will float, race and possibly even win. The annual Float ‘Yer Boat Regatta is something I look forward to each year. And each year, I once again volunteer to build and decorate a boat for The Daily Home’s entry, forgetting how much work was involved to make and decorate last year’s entry. I know how I build our boat each year, but I decided to look and see how some of the other participants go about their boat building and compare the single-participant boat building to the team boat building. The boat I build each year is large enough to accommo-

date one person, chiefly David Atchison, champion kayaker and also our Pell City news editor. Since he kayaks regularly for Lakeside, he is the best choice to paddle our entry. When I thought of who builds a team-sized boat each year, I remembered Eissmann Automotive’s entry, which is always huge and looks spectacular and carries six to eight people in style. After building two cardboard boats successfully, I picked up a few tips I hoped would make vessel crafting easier this year. I decided to go with the kayak shape, because it seemed to work well last year and David liked it (very important because he is the one brave enough to race my creation). I ran my name for the boat past our managing editor, Geni Certain,

who gave it the nod and we officially became Daily Home “The Reel News” with a fishing theme. Geni and I picked out spray paint colors and loads of duct tape, as well as our team shirts I would decorate with our name, and I was set. A kayak shape isn’t too hard to frame, but it’s sometimes hard to hold corrugated cardboard in place and duct tape it together by yourself. I decided a marathon of duct taping would probably be my best bet, and managed to have 90 percent of the boat taped by the end of Day 1 (I used probably 15-18 rolls of duct tape). Of course, that meant on Day 2, I was sore in muscles I forgot I even had, but the majority of the work was done. Days 2-3 were for the last bit of duct taping, spray painting and then retaping a few areas that needed it. Now remember, this kayak-shaped creation is only about 12 feet long and perhaps three feet high, but every square inch is covered with duct tape, and that’s a lot of taping for one person to do. Day 3 was also the day I went to see how the Eissmann Automotive entry, Floatin’ Otto III, was shaping up. Boy, was I in for a surprise. I walked into the basement where the Eissmann crew was working and saw a masterpiece in the making. Vesta Marcum, one of the Eissmann team members, had told me a little bit about the boat. So while I knew it would be large, it still managed to wow me. Hanging on the wall were actual blueprints of the boat, the engineering schematic kind of blueprints. There were guys with rulers making notations on a piece of cardboard on what would be the bow or stern, with lines for how they would fold it. The boat itself, which was still taking shape, is 27 feet long and would be 6 feet high at the bow and stern. That would provide plenty of room for the eight people who would row it during the race. I mentally compared their engineering to my “when all else fails, add more duct tape” approach, and was very glad I didn’t have to build a boat for eight people all by myself. It would never happen. I was told the theme for the Floatin’ Otto III, which is a Viking ship this year, actually September 2010 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

came from the costume one of their team members, Ken Howe, used at last year’s race. Howe came to the regatta last year wearing a metal colander embellished with deer antlers on his head, in rough mimicry of a Viking helmet. I remembered him from last year because of that great hat. Eissmann’s president, Jost Bierbaum, said it was Eissmann’s third year to compete in the regatta, and like me, they had learned a few tricks in boat crafting over the years. Both of us had tried to use paraffin on our boats the first year; however, while I used the plain white stuff, their guy

16

could only find the lavender- and peach-scented variety, which they said stank really badly and wasn’t all that effective. In fact, Eissmann’s Floatin’ Otto (the first one) sank so spectacularly they won the S.S. Minnow Award for the ship that sinks the best. Our second entries used lots and lots of duct tape, minus the paraffin. The Floatin’ Otto II had a motto that read “Two miles of duct tape,” which was probably a fair assessment, considering the size of the boat. Jost said this was the first year the Eismann team used blue-

prints, with engineers Lubos Ulovec and Shawn Ledbetter applying their skills in preparation for the hours of duct taping to follow. He said about six people worked on the boat for about three hours each evening. He estimated it would take about 120 man-hours total to finish the Viking ship. I, on the other hand, spent a few hours creating newspaper-and-duct-tape fish (to go with our Reel News theme) and designing our team shirts, and perhaps eight or so hours on boat construction. Considering the last minute ducttaping and final hand-painting I will spend probably 15-18

woman-hours total. Sore muscles aside and regardless of whether our boats float or sink, I think Marcum said it best: “It is such a great cause,” she told me. “The community really turns out for it.” And it’s true. The boat regatta benefits the Pell City Toys for Children program, which provides toys and clothes to needy children at Christmas. Having a lot of fun on the lake and helping a good cause — what could be better?

Arton the Water Food. Drink. Art. Artists and art lovers explore new offerings at Artscape’s Gallery Night.

New Artscape artist Nita Pohlmann displayed her unique style of art on this collection of a table, box and shelf.

| Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2010

There was no better way to beat the early August heat than to hang out with some of the coolest cats in St. Clair County at the Artscape Gallery Night. The gallery was filled with people who have their finger on the pulse of area’s art scene — the members of the St. Clair Council of the Arts and patrons of the Artscape Gallery on Cogswell Avenue in Pell City. It was one of the quarterly gallery nights hosted at Artscape every year. Council of the Arts President Penny Arnold said, “All of the artists who are part of the gallery bring in new work and freshen up the place. We invite the public and all of our regulars who like to come to it. We also have refreshments and wine and soft drinks in the back.” The August edition of Gallery Night featured pieces from well-known area artists such as Connie Kelley, Jack Lincoln, Worth Barham, Janice Entler and several others. It also featured a newcomer to the gallery.

N

ita Pohlmann is a self-described doodler who has turned a hobby to fill time into her own unique art form. Her featured pieces now at the gallery included a shelf, a small box and a low table. They showed busy nature scenes highlighted by a large orange sun. The pieces had doodles spread all over their surfaces. “I’ve done art all my life. I just sat around doodling to keep my hands busy, and then everybody starts telling me, ‘Hey, you should sell this.’ I quit doing portraits and started doing this,” Pohlmann said. She said the doodling is something she does nearly every day. She begins to draw whatever comes to mind at the time. “I call it a mind dump. It’s just whatever comes out of my head,” Pohlmann said. For the art admirers who were famished after checking out the new works, the Council of the Arts had a delicious buffet of snacks such as cookies, fruit and crackers as well as water, soft drinks and several varieties of wine to wash down those treats. “It usually gets really crowded, and we just have a lot of fun until 7:30 or 8,” Arnold said as the event began at 5 p.m. “We like to catch people coming home from work or people who like to have something to go out and do.” Visitors began trickling in at 5 as they leisurely checked out what was available. By a quarter to 6, the room was full of both art admirers and the artists themselves. Art pieces ranging from paintings to jewelry to woodwork to pottery work lined both walls of the gallery, the middle of the room and even a small side room about the size of a closet. The gallery shares a backroom space with next-door business Merle Norman, which is where the food and drink tables were set up. The space is also used for art classes and workshops and houses a kiln for those who partici-

pate in the pottery workshops. This is the third year of existence for the gallery. “We’re amazed that we’re still doing well and we’re still open, because this is all discretionary spending,” council member Lise Jones said. “We have a lot of repeat customers, and they’ve been very supportive. We’re the only real art gallery in the county.” Council members viewed this event as an appetizer for its biggest annual event coming in September, the Artscape Festival. “We’ll have regional artists, not just artists in the gallery but artists from all around the state and even out of the state,” Arnold said. “That will be Sept. 25 from 10 to 4 in Lakeside Park. There will be food and art and we hope to have some music. That should be a great day.”

Something to Cheer About

W

here else for a perfect back-to-school party — there’s swimming and boating and plenty of plain old relaxing in and around Logan Martin Lake. That’s why Lindsey Hull, whose inlaws Tom and Maria Hull happen to have a lakefront home, chose the spot for a gettogether for a unique group of students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham just before getting back into their routines for the fall. The group the Hulls entertained are a visible bunch when UAB gets going in the fall. The guests were the UAB Golden Girls dance team and the UAB cheerleaders. Hull is in her second year as director of the Golden Girls and wanted to have a special gathering to get everyone in the spirit for the upcoming season. With that in mind, it was only natural to include the cheerleading squad and their director, David Gilliland. So, on a great summer day with the Logan Martin backdrop for fun and frolic, the Hull home became the venue for close to 50 UAB athletes to gather and make a splash. The Hulls were thrilled to have the groups visit and were busy grilling hamburgers and hotdogs, to be served with all the accoutrements that make a summer cookout delicious and fun. For anyone cruising by that day, the dancers and cheerleaders made quite an impression when they decided to show off Story and Photos by LAURA NATION-ATCHISON

some of their moves along the shore. When the cheerleaders started stacking each other up in their stands, holding one another overhead by their feet and then flipping down to the ground, more than one passing boat slowed to give its occupants a better look. “You know they’re wondering what in the world is going on,” Maria Hull noted. “This isn’t something you see every day out here.” There were triple flips from the Hulls’ two-tiered dock, back flips from the boathouse walkway and all kinds of gymnastic approaches to enjoying the water. Most of the dance team, though, chose to grab spots in a huge raft and relax, floating alongside the Hull’s dock. Looking at the float full of dancers taking it easy and staying cool, their director laughed and said, “That’s really what they do best. At least on the lake.” And that’s what the day was all about, anyway, she said, time for having fun and for new members of the groups to get to know each other in an unstressful setting.

The UAB cheerleaders practiced some of their stunts during their visit to Logan Martin Lake, offering a free sideshow for passing boaters.

Once their season starts, both groups have heavy schedules with practices and performances throughout the football and basketball seasons. They also take part in competitions with other schools that bring acclaim to the university and also offer new ideas and moves to bring back for their school.

“It’s a pretty rigorous thing for all of them,” Lindsey Hull said. “This is really good for them to get together and just have fun.” Being a member of either group is an extracurricular activity, and all members have to carve out the time from their

academic schedules. The dancers and cheerleaders have all kinds of majors, from nursing and education to premed and business. Kendra Williams, captain of the cheerleading squad, is a senior in her fourth year on the squad. She started cheerleading in high school in Tuscaloosa and has kept at it ever since. “It’s definitely a passion,” she said. The activity also earns her a scholarship, an important asset in getting her college degree. Twenty-year-old Emily Brooks has been a Golden Girl for three years and is majoring in management and marketing. She said she loves not only the dancing, but also providing support to the university’s athletic teams. Watching the groups going though some of the moves just for fun at the party, Tom Hull laughed, joining his wife in wondering what the passersby were thinking about the hoard of jumping and flipping young men and women. “They look like they’re having a ball out here, and that was the whole idea. To offer them a good time on this fantastic spot we love on the lake. We love to share it with people, especially people who aren’t as lucky as we are to live here.”

Lakeside Living in Style

Bring on the Crowds Mack and Shirley Ferguson designed their house to be a comfortable home for their whole family.

T

hey already had a lake house, but it was in Georgia at Lake Jackson. And Mack and Shirley Ferguson had their home in Birmingham, as well. So when the Fergusons found the perfect piece of property on Logan Martin Lake in 1985, initially, the plan was to build a cabin. That would mean three homes, and Shirley wanted to simplify. “I told Mack I wanted one house, and then we agreed to build here,” she said, standing on the broad peninsula that now is the site for the four-level home they built 15 years ago. 30

| Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2010

Since making their decision, the Fergusons are still thrilled with the place they chose and with the home design they came up with. They had certain things to consider, and the Fergusons made sure they all came through in planning their home. First, it had to be a place where their large family could converge; that’s the theme at the Ferguson home. “Family and fun are real big here,” Shirley said. She points out a cleared area in the middle of the point they live on. “That’s the wiffleball field,” she said. “And we’re very indulgent with it - you can’t strike out.”

By LAURA NATION-ATCHISON Photos by BOB CRISP At the end of the point stands the boat house and covered docks and decks, another place for groups of family and friends to gather. This is just one of the pieces of Mack Ferguson’s own handiwork. He built it himself, along with the large picnic table bearing the Ferguson family crest, which by the way, he hand-painted himself. The crest features three boars, which, interestingly enough, represent hospitality, Shirley said. Ferguson also painted the great blue heron and dragonflies that decorate the table, all done free hand. There’s more to come about Ferguson’s artistic talents later.

The dock houses the family’s deck boat, used for having lots of fun on the water, whether it’s just taking a cruise or pulling happy grandchildren around on their water toys. “This creek is really like a street front,” Shirley said. “There’s always something going on to watch.” At the other end of the grounds, there’s the zip-line Ferguson built, another testament to his knack for making things. This is the place that grandchildren and grandparents alike can take a quick ride and splash into the water. “We ride it, too,” Shirley said. “It’s great.”

The Fergusons designed and built their Logan Martin home on the lake 15 years ago. Ferguson built the decks and boathouse himself. The warm living room opens onto the lakefront.

The house, situated in the center of the property, spans out to give a three-sided view of the water. The Fergusons designed their home with two “fronts,” one facing the drive, the other, facing the lake. From the boathouse, there’s a flagstone path to the house bordered by batches of hydrangea and bunches of lilies, with pink Pride of Mobile azaleas surrounding the screened porch that faces the water and stretches along the side of the house. The pathway parts to take guests to either entry, and from the drive and garage entry, a front porch and deck is fitted with a wrought iron table and chairs for enjoying this view of the water. A large urn holds a fluffy plant called a Devil’s Backbone, with multicolored foliage that stays bright all year. The large plant originated from a little sprig from a plant Mack Ferguson’s mother had. From this front, the entry opens into a sprawling dining room to one side, with floor-to-ceiling widows all around, which is open to the adjoining kitchen. Walls in the kitchen and dining room are a soft buttery shade, and trim and molding around windows and the double doors to the screened porch are crisp white. Floors are rich oak, and the dining table stands on a room-sized Oriental rug in shades of rose, gold and sage. The dining table seats 12 and is actually two identical tables Ferguson put together and added an extra leaf. A pewter chandelier fitted with 12 copper-shaded lamps hangs over the table. A four-drawer sideboard holds an intricate, antique Japanese tea set. Ferguson’s grandmother received the tea set from her brother, who bought it in Japan while serving in World War I. A tall carved-oak armoire holds serving pieces and other entertaining needs. There is additional seating for four at a bar and work island extending from the kitchen, where cabinets are white and countertops soft beige. The kitchen is where a lot of the fun takes place in the Ferguson family. “We’re all good cooks,” Shirley said. When their four children and seven grandchildren are visiting, the family chooses up teams for meals and takes turns. Ferguson laughed and said he’s just “an excellent eater,” enjoying the meals served by the entire family. The family includes sons Mickey, and yes, he’s the Fox 6 weather guy who keeps viewers entertained each weekday morning; and Corky, who also lives in Birmingham. Daughter Cindy lives in Atlanta with her family, and Ginger lives in Montgomery with her husband and children.

| Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2010

The screened porch is big enough for a crowd, which is often the case for the Ferguson family. The kitchen, just off the dining room, includes space for seating at the bar and work island. The dining room includes a table for 12, made by joining two tables together.

The Ferguson family grew up in Birmingham, where their parents met and became high school sweethearts at Phillips High School. The Fergusons celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary two years ago. Mack Ferguson is executive director for the Greater Talladega Area Chamber of Commerce and formerly worked in automation and sales and owned several businesses of his own. Shirley stayed busy with the four children and being a fulltime homemaker. Leaving the dining room, double doors lead onto the broad screened porch, a favorite place for reminiscing and visiting. Natural rattan seating is covered with floral cushions made by no other than Ferguson himself, and the porch is the place where the Fergusons placed his grandmother’s library table and a huge trunk that belonged to his grandfather. Even more of Ferguson’s artistic pursuits are present in the room: The pair of bronze and yellow stained-glass suncatchers on the wall are his. There had to be a swing on the porch — “that’s where we courted, in a swing,” Shirley said, and this is where the Fergusons still like to have coffee and linger in the mornings or take in the sounds of the lake at midnight. There’s entry to the porch from the living room, as well, where a stately oak mantle — made by Ferguson — and built-in cabinetry surround a large fireplace. Matching wing chairs are covered in fabric with a grapevine design, in shades of soft greens, and these, too, were upholstered by Ferguson. Shirley smiled as she recounted her husband’s handiness, and offered, “I did paint the entire house myself, though.” Beween the chairs is a three-drawer oak chest, and a vase holds a clutch of hydrangeas from the yard. An Oriental rug in red and gold bordered in deep blue stretches over the wood floors, and a rattan couch is covered with plump beige-and-burgundy-patterned cushions. Another couch is a deep crimson, and there’s a Boston rocker to the side. An oval coffee table is topped with glass over a wrought iron base. There’s a table for four in the corner, handy for dining or for playing games or cards. Overhead, a display case holds pieces of the Fergusons’ wedding china. Walls are the same creamy color used in the dining room and kitchen and also are trimmed in white. Of the two bedrooms on this level, one is “Mickey’s” and faces the water with full windows giving a perfect view. An iron bed with an antique finish is covered with a white matelasse spread, and pillow shams are a black-and-white toile.

“We ride the zip-line too,” Shirley said. “It’s great.” A matching chest and dresser are from Shirley’s mother’s home. This bedroom is carpeted in beige, as is the master bedroom across the hall. The master bedroom is just a few steps away from the living room, and Shirley said there’s a reason. “I like to be in the middle of everything,” she said. Walls in the master bedroom are a light gold trimmed in white. There’s a king-size iron bed with a soft white spread and matching shams, with accent pillows in beige, matching the dust ruffle. Matching three-drawer side tables hold family photographs. There’s room for Ferguson’s mother’s couch for relaxing, covered with the same rose floral window treatments used over plantation shutters. The couch comes in handy when grandchildren want to pile up together all in the same room. “We’ve even had them sleeping in the closet before,” Shirley said. Double doors lead to the large master bath, where a jetted tub and walk-in shower are set against white tile and walls. A walk-in closet is located across from the bath. From the kitchen area, steps lead upstairs to the den, and along the hall just off the kitchen is a tall Mission-style armoire, yet another piece of Ferguson’s creation. “I saw one like this and said I wanted one,” Shirley said. “So here it is.” It functions wells as a catch-all for organizing the large serving and casserole dishes needed for feeding crowds whose numbers can climb into dozens. The Fergusons had 25 for this year’s July 4th bash, and all 25 stayed the night. On the second level, the broad den has room for a children’s play area along with comfortable seating for watching television or visiting. Twin bookshelves are filled with books for the grandchildren’s visits, and an armoire centered in between houses a large-screen television. There’s a piano for the musically inclined, and a pair of couches and a large leather recliner offer seating for a good-sized gathering. The barn-shaped roof is fitted with a pair of skylights, which add to the natural light from two large windows. A child-sized table and four chairs await the grandchildren, and at the other end of the room is a table for four adults. Walls are a light linen shade, and the floor is carpeted in light beige Berber. Up another level, there are three large bedrooms, all furnished with queen-size beds and trundle day beds tucked into dormer alcoves. A half bath and a full bath are also located on the top level, where the Fergusons created a “play closet” for the youngsters who visit. 34

Mack and Shirley Ferguson love spending early mornings or late evenings in their porch swing, where they can look out on the water and enjoy time together.

Ferguson seems to always have a project under way, and in early August, he was adding a “stuff garage to the property. He’s building it himself, of course, and expects to have it “stuff ready before long. When the Fergusons were looking for their spot on the lake, their decision about the place they would eventually

call home was a quick one. “I saw an ad in the paper and called about it, Ferguson said. “I asked if they could tell me about it, and he said, ‘if you see it, you’ll want it.’ And that, he said, is exactly what happened.

Why build just a dock when you can have an outdoor party pad?

teve Sutton admits he didn’t expect too much out of his Logan Martin boathouse. “I just wanted a boathouse,” the Madison resident

said. Instead, wife Deborah, who designed the lake house, took it upon herself to take an ordinary boathouse and give it some style. “(Deborah) was real involved in the boathouse,” he said. “She was concerned about the view, the appearance, that kind of thing.” Working with Bobby Hubbard of Custom Docks, Deborah and Steve achieved the desired results. “It’s great,” Sutton said. “It’s a lot more boathouse for our money than I ever thought possible.” The Suttons are not unique in the lake area, where population increases have meant changing business for everyone associated with Logan Martin Lake, especially those whose 40

business is building boat docks or “shoreline renewal.” Bobby Howard, of Custom Docks, has been working at Logan Martin for 12 years. “We used to pretty much just build docks out of poles,” Howard said. “Now, docks are not just places to store boats.” The customer base is as interested in form as function. White is both a customer and a vendor in the lake area — he stains decks for a living, and his boathouse is a Custom Docks creation, as well. “Little stuff like the railing around (a boathouse) is important to people,” White said. “One of my neighbors has a boathouse, it’s got a lift in it that’s operated by a remote control. “People now want a finished product from their boathouses. To them, the boathouse is just as important as the

house itself.” Like Howard, Mackey Pile Driving and Tradesman Company do most of their shoreline business in the Logan Martin area. And like Howard, they see a great deal more diverse business than they once did. “The docks have a lot more decorative stuff than they used to,” said Eric Mackey, whose company has been in Pell City since 1988. “A lot more decorations, more style. Customers also have the option to build their docks in “stages,” in an effort to save money. “They don’t have to do it all at one time,” Howard said. And as an added bonus for Howard, Mackey and Waldrop, business has remained strong even in difficult economic times. “Times are bad,” said White. “But times are not bad, as far as (business on the lake). But people do want a finished product.”

lot more character than they used to.” Jacob Waldrop, of Tradesman, has called Logan Martin “one of the South’s best-kept secrets.” “Before, we got on the lake, there were very few commercial projects or big subdivision developments,” he said. “You’re just not used to seeing that – you’re used to the trailers and the campgrounds. The demographics have changed a whole lot. “You’ve got professionals and retirees moving in looking to retiring and having a weekend getaway on the lake. … It’s a lot of fun to ride around and see all these new places.” Howard says many people build their docks as places to entertain. Many of them now include sitting areas and swimming equipment; a few even have expansive roof areas with staircases, for entertainment purposes. “Some people will even put a dock on their property before they build their house,” Howard said. “They can always upgrade it after the house is built.” Regulations from Alabama Power do place limits on the creativity of prospective customers. Most notably, docks cannot be built as enclosed structures, so as to protect the line of sight for each house on the lake.

What’s Buggin’ You?

A

warm fall can mean extended days or weeks to enjoy the outdoors and enjoy living Lakeside. But the extra heat and humidity can also mean more time spent dealing with mosquitoes, ants, beetles and other insects. Here are some suggestions on how to cut down on the bug bites and annoyances while enjoying your long summer, possibly into February.

Best ways to protect against critters that bite and sting. Who is that good-looking lady? She is part of the Anopheles group more commonly known as mosquitoes. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, female mosquitoes’ mouthparts form a long piercing-sucking proboscis. Males differ from females by having mouthparts not suitable for piercing skin. Insert male/female joke here. There are more than 200 types of mosquitoes nationwide and more than 2,500 across the globe. Mosquito bites are usually a mild to moderate problem for people outdoors, but mosquitoes can also carry a variety of diseases to be passed on to humans and animals.

This is one of the more permanent ways to let the summer breeze from the lake in and keep the bugs out. Screened porches allow people to enjoy the weather without putting up with the moths, the mosquitoes and those flying beetles that run into stuff. Outdoor fans can provide further deterrent for insects by keeping the air circulating while keeping you and your guests cool. By MATT QUILLEN Photos by BOB CRISP 44

Whether you are entertaining a few friends out on your porch or have a personal vendetta against moths, a bug zapper could be the choice for you. The device uses electrically charged (at least 2,000 volts usually) wire-mesh grids to zap the pests flying into it. Bug zappers can lure thousands of insects in a single night, using an ultraviolet light to attract them. Unfortunately, mosquitoes are NOT attracted by the light.

Citronella candles, incense or “Tiki Torches can be an aromatic and stylish way to keep the bugs off. Luau anyone? The devices use the oil from the citronella plant, a natural mosquito deterrent. A University of Guelph, in Ontario, Canada, study showed subjects who were near the citronella candles had 42 percent fewer bites than those away from it and those near the citronella incense had 24 percent fewer bites.

There are several types of herbal and synthetic chemical bug repellents readily available. The most common type of repellent contains the chemical deet. The chemical has been around for more than 50 years and appears in a variety of brands, such as Off. Another option is repellent with lemon eucalyptus oil. Several studies have found this type of repellent to be more effective and longer lasting than any other available. Plus, many repellant companies offer better smelling and feeling repellents than those offered in the past. Because who wants to be oily, smelly AND sweaty?

Pesticide sprayers, such as the one pictured that attaches to a garden hose, can help someone spray their lawn and garden evenly and easily. These products help to rid your home’s exterior of insects that may damage the landscaping. You should probably take them off before you drink from the hose though.

hile chatting with co-owner Kirk Hanbury on the balcony behind Boondocks Waterfront Grille in Lincoln, a customer steps out, sits down and says, “You know what I would do to make this place better?” Waiting half a beat, he says “Nothing. Everything looks, tastes, smells perfect. What more could you want.” In the six weeks since Hanbury and his brother Scott first opened their doors to the public, more and more people are starting to feel that way. This, Hanbury believes, is due to crucial ideas. “Lincoln needs a restaurant that’s also a destination. We need a place for people who are too old for nightclubs but too young to just sit on your front porch and wave at passing cars. But we want to make sure everyone also realizes that we are first and foremost a restaurant that happens to have some night life.” 50

Down-home food that will make your mouth think it’s gone uptown.

Although Boondocks boasts a full-service bar, live music on Wednesday nights and weekends and a dance floor, Hanbury is emphatic that the food is king. “There had been some pool tables in here before, and we thought about putting some more in, but we found that most of the people that came in for the pool tables were more ‘bar types.’ We’re a restaurant first. The quality of the food is paramount.” Kitchen manager Spencer’s charge was to create a menu “indicative of local food, and make it the best possible.” Says Spencer, “We’ve got a Philly cheese steak that has thicker slices of meat than you see on most sandwiches that’s actually cooked in a pizza oven. The only subs people can get around here are from Subway, so we want to give them an alternative. And there’s not really any good pizza around here, either, so we got some pizza specialists.”

Exhibit A in the pizza category is the “kitchen sink,” which almost literally has a bit of everything in the kitchen on it. A slice is more than an inch thick. The burgers are also quickly gaining local renown, with the unlikely champion being the PB&J Burger, which is exactly what it sounds like. “That’s our signature item, and it’s absolutely off the charts. Everyone who has ever tried it has ordered it again,” Hanbury said. The other specialty item is the Boondock Special, a heaping seafood platter consisting of catfish, shrimp, crab claws and crawfish tails, with two sides and two hushpuppies. “Most people can’t finish it,” Hanbury said. “We also have steaks, the best fried mushrooms around, and they’re big, too. Crawfish and blackened tomatoes are also really big. We’ve got salads on a 14-inch dinner plate, piled high, that are just things of beauty. The food has to look right to taste right.” All desserts are made on site, and all fried items are handbreaded. The only freezer-to-fryer item on the menu is the French fries. During the day, the daily lunch special is made on site by Miss Loretta Truss. Entrees include meatloaf on Mondays, chicken and dumplings on Tuesdays and Fridays, pork chops on Wednesdays and fried chicken on Thursdays. “Just good

The back deck at Boondock’s already has seating for more than 30 people, at least some of whom will enjoy Boondocks signature dish, the aptly named PB&J Burger. home cooking,” he said. In addition to the local regulars, Boondocks is also beginning to draw some water traffic. “I have plenty of parking, and right now I have more docks than I can ever fill up. I’ve got a boat ramp and seating for 30-plus people on the back deck overlooking the water.” The building housed Frank’s Seafood for about 25 years, Hanbury said. “They’re success was concentrating on good food, good service and good prices. We’re trying to recreate that ambience with Boondocks. We’re not catering to anyone but the local population. And we want to support the local economy. We bought hardware in Lincoln, a Lincoln company handles our insurance, and our attorney is from Lincoln. We’re going to be sponsoring a local baseball team and working with the athletic boosters at Lincoln High School.” The Hanburys leased the building in March and began a process of remodeling floor to ceiling, relying strongly on friends and family. “We knocked out walls, enclosed the smoking area and added 14 feet to the bar. My mother painted the murals. We got new HVAC, new bathrooms, and we’re working on the docks now…. Before we did any work, we went to (Lincoln Mayor) Lew Watson and the council … and I think all of the council members have come here to eat.”

In addition to renovating the docks, there are also plans in the works to put a roof over the deck and place additional plasma TVs in the bar, with speakers outside. There are also plans for a Sunday afternoon buffet. “This is a family-oriented place, 24-7,” Hanbury said. “I have a 10-year-old and a 15-year-old, and I don’t think twice about bringing them here. Most of the time, they’re out fishing off the deck.” Boondocks is open Monday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Happy hour at the bar is 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and there are drink specials throughout the week. Monday nights feature allyou-can-eat wings and the Anniston Line Dance Social Club on stage from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday nights feature singer-guitarist Jim Parks, who has developed a local following of his own, and there is also live entertainment Friday and Saturday nights. Boondocks is located at 84 Blue Eye Road West in Lincoln, just after the Embry Crossroads exit. For more information, call 205-763-2294. P.S. Your intrepid reporter chickened out at the last minute from ordering the PB&J Burger, but he will be back. In the meantime, the surf and turf burger, topped with Swiss cheese and grilled shrimp, is sublime.

bove the calm lake, the morning sun is rising. The light ripples are consistent. The morning is quiet. Sipping coffee in the abundance of shade from the trees in the backyard, Teresa Carden looks over her landscape. She mentions the eagle she recently saw perched atop a tree and talks of how he glided across the water before flying on. “We sit on the patio every single night for a least a little while,” Carden said. “It’s so relaxing, you can’t explain it, we just live in paradise. It’s like we have our own resort.” The Cardens have lived in the three-bedroom, three-bath home at 490 River Oaks Drive in Cropwell for nine years, and they recently remodeled. “We’ve upgraded almost every room in the house,” Carden said. The lake now can be viewed from almost every room in the house, which Carden said was one of her goals with the remodeling process. “We had our house on the market, and one of the biggest, most important facts was that we were looking to have a view of 54

the lake from the family room,” she said. “The main goal was to see through to the lake.” The family room originally had an enclosure, Carden said, and visitors encountered a closet upon entering the home. Now, granite countertops and cabinetry make a bar, perfect for entertaining. “It had a full wall between dining and kitchen,” Carden said. “We cut a closet in half and left columns, made a half-cabinet, added granite countertops and made a bar area combined with den that faces the dining area and lake view.” And, she said, “We cut half of a wall out to open up more to the dining room and kitchen area, which is more open to the lake.” Every room now has hardwood floors or tile, and light fixtures were recently upgraded throughout the home. “I am most proud of the openness, but my husband would be most proud of the hardwood,” Carden said. The Cardens worked with a local contractor who sketched out some ideas and helped finalize the plans for the remodeling. continued on page 58

“I had the general ideas,” Carden said. “I came up with my own ideas.” Overall, the project took approximately five weeks. In addition to the larger projects, small improvements such as wall-mounted televisions and new light fixtures updated the house. Downstairs, the Cardens installed two sets of French doors and a pool table. They added a dock, stairs and a middle deck to what was once only a pier. Perfect to house a boat or Jet Skis, the dock also affords a peaceful view of the lake. “The easiest part is the planning,” Carden said. “I can come up with all these ideas, but to truly be able to do these things, it takes a lot more planning and processing.” Carden said the main point to the remodeling process was to get a good, open view. “Something that was functional,” she said, “but something that would be able to give us openness and a view of the lake.” 58
