Capturing the essence of Logan Martin

From the editor… It’s that time of year again where the skies give way to some of the most spectacular sunsets. No two seem to be alike. Capturing their beauty in a photo even makes amateur photographers like me look like a seasoned pro because of their color, their expanse, their ability to draw you in. At Lakeside Living Magazine, we have seen plenty of sunsets and other picturesque scenes on Logan Martin Lake – captured a few for covers and such. And we’ve had help from our readers/photographers along the way. This month’s featured photo above is testament to that. Debbie Tsimpedes, who Lakeside writer David Atchison discovered taking photos and bird watching a few months back on his kayak trip for the magazine, followed up on David’s photo of a muscovey duck, the colorful, yet quackless duck found on Logan Martin. It seems the duck isn’t alone any longer. She and her family are featured in this photograph taken by Debbie. We thank her for letting us know the rest of the story and sharing it with us so we could share it with you. And anyone who would like to submit a photo for use in the magazine may do so by emailing it to: cpappas@ dailyhome.com. It’s November. It’s Lakeside. It’s where you want to be.

Great Pumpkin Regatta

Sailing club has long history on Logan Martin Story by Matt Quillen Photos by Bob Crisp

The first chill of winter breezes in to shore across Logan Martin Lake. The water keeps a fast, consistent choppiness. Underneath the gray sky, boats tied to the dock continue to rock back and forth, bumping their sides against the floating walkway. It’s a great day for sailing. Continued on Page 8

The clubhouse for the Birmingham Sailing Club sits just above the scene with an expansive view of the lake. What once was only a covered pavilion with a fireplace is now fully enclosed, with couches, TV, a serving/ dining area and a foosball table. Wood burns in the still-standing fireplace, fighting the October breeze outside.

Today is the 41st annual Great Pumpkin Regatta, a weekend series of races for club members and friends. The race will consist strictly of “Thistles, a 17-foot long sailboat built for speed. Teams of three will man the boat, a skipper and two crewmembers. The story of the sailing club began

with Sam Caldwell, a handful of others and no lake to sail on. Caldwell worked for Alabama Power in 1962, when the company decided to build the lake. Using a map of the forthcoming project, Caldwell found a spot that would soon become lakefront property. And thus, the Birmingham Sailing Club was born. It formed in June 1963 with 44 charter members. But it would be more than a year until its members had a local lake to sail on. “By the time the water was here, we had the clubhouse built,” Caldwell said. Caldwell recalled the first sail on the brand new lake on July 16, 1964. “I left work one day and drove out here,” he said. “The paved ramp didn’t get down to the water yet, but I got my boat in the water, and we took a sail. We came in after about an hour. My biggest help came from Herb Hager. Herb and I really got the [club] going. Just as I got back to shore, here came Herb. He said, ‘Darn, I thought I was going to be the first in.’” Since then, the club has grown from 44 to 156 members. David Drosdick has been sailing for 39 years and

a member of the club for 10. He said the club has a full schedule of races to go along with the Great Pumpkin, including the Ironman and the Leukemia Cup. “The Leukemia Cup was originally started for one of the members of the club that was diagnosed with Leukemia,” Drosdick said. “So it started as a charity fundraiser here. It’s now sailed around the country, it’s a national event.” Harry Reich has been sailing since the lake was built. He was a charter member of the club, along with Caldwell. He is the last active member of the original group. He said the primary purpose of the club was racing. Evidence of that purpose can be found in members like Eduardo Cordero and Harry’s son, Peter. Both of them have been not only worldclass, but world champion sailors. Cordero is an eight-time Sunfish, a single person boat, world champion. His last title came at Hyannis, Mass. He is also among the competitors in the Great Pumpkin. “We’ll have a lot of good competition today,” Drosdick said. Cordero explained the difference between hanContinued on Page 14

dling a Thistle and a larger boat like a Flying Scot. “The Thistle is much faster, it is lighter,” he said. “When the wind picks up, you have to work the boat much harder to keep it flat, use your body to give stability to the boat.” The club also spends time to teach the art of sailing, especially to kids. Harry Reich said all seven of his children have become avid sailors.

14

From Page 12

The club offers junior and adult sailing camps to keep all ages involved and keep the club growing. Reich said the group stays competitive and still has a good time. “We think competition’s fun,” Reich said. “But there’s a group for larger cruisers. They have got activities to accommodate them.” There are long distance races, too, he said. “We try to provide something for everybody.”

ART BY THE WATER Lovell embraces change in her work

Sylvia Lovell works on one of her paintings.

Story by Brandon Fincher Photos by Bob Crisp Sylvia Lovell is not a person you might one day find stuck in an artistic rut. You can keep yourself educated going to workshops, which I really enjoy doing. Right now, I am studying knife painting with Janet Tillery,” Lovell explained as she showed a recently-completed knife painting. Lovell loved to draw as a child, and that passion for creating images on paper never dimmed as she moved on to painting as she grew up. “I drew a lot. As a small child, I would draw and would always put in a mountain and water and a house. In the yard, I’d always have a swing set. As I got in high school, I took art classes,” Lovell said. “Then, of course, you raise your family and don’t think about it much, but then in about 1975, I started doing pastels, and I Continued on Page 20

Her son-in-law gave her several books on oil painting to help her. In fact, several members of Lovell’s family paint, including her mother and her sister. She started taking lessons in watercolor from renowned local artist Wayne Spradley in 1996 and continued that until 2002. “I also studied with about five other art-

She even moved into doing some abstract paintings after taking a workshop with artist Miles Bates. “He told me a lot of interesting things. is, that they can relate to – a real object. Every one I did I sold. It’s just not my favorite thing to do.” Lovell enjoys traveling and has painted scenes from locales such as the French Riviera, Spain and the New England coast, but her favorite subject matter has not changed from all the way back to her first drawings as a child. “My favorite thing to do is water. I just really enjoy boats and water. We’ve been on the water absolutely all my life. I grew up close to Guntersville Lake, and my husband and I have always skied and had a place on the lake. That’s my love, and if you look around at my paintings, almost all of them have water in it.” She and her husband, Joe, moved to Logan Martin Lake around eight years ago near the Eureka community outside Lincoln. Her studio is in the second story of her home, which provides her an expansive view of the lake. “You can study the trees, and you can study the clouds. When I’m looking out, I can see all different types of clouds. Clouds, to me, are the hardest things to do, to get them natural looking. “Sometimes I see the sunset, and I take pictures of it and think, ‘I can’t even paint that.’ If I painted it to look like that, it would look fake. The water also changes all the time.” Lovell estimates she paints three to four times a week and prefers to finish paintings after several sit-

tings instead of all at once. She does not ever copy any other artist’s work because she likes to only do original work. “It’s a God-given talent, and I just can’t go too long without sitting down and painting. I don’t know; I’m driven I guess you might say. I want to produce something that’s within me. “I love the beauty of it. I even amaze myself when it turns out beautiful. For years, I wouldn’t sell anything. I wanted to keep everything I painted.” In addition, Lovell does all the matting and framing of her paintings. She makes purses to sell, as well as designing cooking aprons and greeting cards featuring her paintings. Recently, she has been working on altering and creating ceramic dolls. She enjoys testing her artistic talents in new ways. “I love the creativity of artwork. I love the challenge of it. If you’ve ever looked at water, it is really hard to make water lay down. You’re working with a sheet of paper, and it’s got to show the depth. That’s what intrigues me, letting people walk into my artwork and then fall in love with it.”

Story by Laura Nation-Atchison Photos by Brian Schoenhals Sunlight shimmered on the waters of Logan Martin Lake on the perfect October day that Jim and Carolyn Bentley chose to be married overlooking Logan Martin Lake. The setting was the pavilion at The Yacht Club in Pell City, where a gathering of about 100 friends and family came to celebrate the occasion. Choosing a lakeside wedding was a natural for the couple, both have lived on Logan Martin Lake for years, and Mrs. Bentley owned Clear Creek Marina on Logan Martin until she sold it last July. Fall flowers and ferns were used on tables and throughout the pavilion, and tables for guests were arranged around the Infinity pool and on the patio overlooking the water. Following the ceremony, the Bentleys and their guests enjoyed dance music on the patio, and a scrumptious buffet was arranged under the pavilion. The Bentleys, both widowed, met in February, when Bentley spotted his future wife at a dance.

The bride and groom have their first dance together as husband and wife on the patio.

That was a “yes” for Bentley, who then proposed to his future wife while on the cruise. “I just said why don’t we get married,” Bentley recalls. Continued on Page 28

Taking to the water A trip up Fishing Creek

Story and photos by David Atchison

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail.

Bobby McDaniel paddles down Fishing Creek, which is located near the Pell City Industrial Park. The trip was new, fun and exciting.

Bobby McDaniel and I paddled from Riverside Marina to Fishing Creek. Even though Bobby is paddling 1020 miles a day, he had never paddled up Fishing Creek. Neither had I until that Friday afternoon. It is only a short distance downstream from Riverside Marina, on the St. Clair County side of Logan Martin Lake. Right at the mouth of the Creek is a small island. There were mallards gathered in one spot, some in the water, others resting on a limb over the water. “I wish I had the long lens,” I told Bobby. It was high school football Friday, and I was afraid I would not make it back to the office with the camera lens before Gary Hanner, the sports editor of The St.Clair Times, needed it for a couple of Friday night football games. So, I decided not to take the long telephoto lens on this particular trip – what a mistake. Everywhere I looked along Fishing Creek, I saw beautiful pictures – from a distance. I decided then I would never go on another Lakeside Living paddle trip without the telephoto lens. It disappointed me when I spotted that

white egret perched high in the tall dead hardwood tree. The sun was headed down and the orange glow of the sun shined on the white feathers of the bird. A beautiful dark blue sky was the backdrop. “Oh, I wish I had the long lens,” I repeated. When we first entered the mouth of Fishing Creek, there was a flock of Canada Geese in the yard of one of the lakeside residents. The geese appeared to just make themselves at home. Some of the geese were in the yard walking and feeding, while others just sat on a pier, looking toward Bobby and me as we approached closer. And while I wished I had not left behind the company’s long camera lens, I sort of wish I had left something I did bring back on shore – the cell phone. Needless to say, it was a busy news day. So there I sat in my long yellow touring kayak, talking to news sources one minute and people at the news office the other minute. “I’m sorry Bobby,” I kept saying. “I understand,” he said. We paddled just a little farther, and I would hear the familiar sound of my phone ringing. After the flurry of phone calls, Bobby and I got back to business - exploring Fishing Creek. “This is beautiful back here,” Bobby would say. I agreed. The mouth of Fishing Creek, where it joins the main river channel on Logan Martin Lake, is wide but as you paddle back into the creek, it narrows. After we entered Fishing Creek, it wasn’t long before we heard a train. We spotted the fast moving passenger train as it headed north.

We eventually made our way underneath the actual train trestle. The creek narrowed considerably when we passed the bridge. As we eased further up the creek, my eyes caught movement along the right shoreline. We just about paddled on top of a grey colored egret, standing in the water next to shore. It was a gorgeous bird. I was shocked as to how close it allowed us to approach. The egret would fly a little ahead of us and watch as we approached, again and again. The egret didn’t seem too bothered by us, but the long-legged bird just wanted to keep a little distance between him and us. Bobby and I eventually approached a big hardwood tree that had fallen across the creek. At one end, I was able to squeeze through with my boat. I eased forward and I could hear Bobby, trying to work his way around the tree. Then I heard a big splash. I didn’t have to look back to know Bobby took a swim. “Are you O.K.,” I yelled. He was fine – just a little wet. We weren’t able to go much farther past the fallen tree, which was located sort of behind the Pell City Industrial Park. A few days later, after our trip, I found out Logan Martin Lake Protection Association lake monitors had discovered the E.coli bacteria in this creek. I told Bobby. “Thanks for telling me now,” he said. “Well, I waded in the creek, too,” I said. We both laugh, and despite it all, we are both ready for our next adventure, so until then, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Theirs is a high point that has a feel of the mountains as well as the view of the lake. The Palmores bought their cottage style home from developer Brad Brascho, who used a Southern Living home plan for the design.

A cozy front porch outfitted with a pair of matching rockers welcomes visitors, and huge pots bursting with bright red begonias are still at full bloom in late October. A flagstone walk leads to the front door, and if the Palmores don’t hear you coming, you can tap on the door with their knocker, made in the shape of a bear. That’s the first clue of the couple’s love of wildlife. It’s a theme that’s followed all through the house. Warm lighting inside comes from an assortment of large lamps, some made from baskets and others oversized pieces of pottery. The home has the feel of a mountain lodge, and Mrs. Palmore will say it’s no accident. She and her husband love to travel, and one of her favorite spots is Asheville, N.C. and its Grove Park Inn, where the design creates a lodge-like, but elegant environment. The foyer is a place that “really

says everything about us,” Mrs. Palmore explains. There’s a shadowbox that holds miniatures of things that reflect her career in retail, from a tiny shoe to a perfume bottle to lingerie, and pieces of framed African weavings hang along a wall leading upstairs. A batch of turkey tail feathers made into a wall hanging hangs over the front door. Mrs. Palmore got her start in retail at a McRae’s Department Store and now works part time with French Market Antiques in Birmingham. There’s been lots of travel in her work, and she’s brought home many of the treasures she runs into, on trips buying for work as well as traveling with her husband for fun. An arched doorway leads from the foyer into the living room, which is open to the dining room on one side. Talking about some of her “finds,” Mrs. Palmore points out a huge rattan buffet by Ralph Lauren and tells how she got it.

36

“I actually found that at a fire sale in Mississippi,” she said. The buffet is placed beside a large glass top dining room table where chairs at each end are upholstered in animal print fabric, and side chairs are intricately carved wood. A zebra print rug is used underneath the dining table. A clutch of candles arranged in the center of the table makes a centerpiece for dining by candlelight. A large chandelier overhead is made of intertwined antlers, and has been part of the Palmore household “for many of our homes,” Mrs. Palmore said. “We bought it in Durango, Colorado. I don’t know how many houses it’s been in now,” she said. An Oriental cabinet in the dining room holds family photographs, many of them the Palmores’ parents and grandpar-

A double tray ceiling in the dining room has white trim against warm golden tone walls and insets. A basket in a corner holds an assortment of interesting gourds, given to Mrs. Palmore by friends Steve and Sally Smith of Pell City. The Smiths also gave Mrs. Palmore the skull of a cow she has displayed on a side table in a nook off the main living room. “There’s a story about that,” she says. “I’m told that this cow died giving birth. This is kind of in homage to her, but I find it interesting, too. I call her Hope.” “I would say I’m eclectic in style,” Mrs. Palmore said. “I like using a lot of different things.” Many of the rugs in the house are Indonesian, with shades of reds and corals and warm earth tones, laid atop the wood floors on the main level. Soft suede couches and chairs in camel are arranged in the living room, fitted with pillows in Native American design and solid coral shades. Side tables hold mission style lamps that glow amber light through the room. A fireplace is filled with candles with holders in varying heights and over the large mantle, hangs a decorative Native-American shirt the Palmores found in the Santa Fe area. At the rear of the living room is a room Mrs. Palmore calls the music room, it’s where they gather with friends and

That’s why we call the house our Playmore house, it’s kind of a play on our name, too.” A pair of matching leather couches in the room are deep brown, placed across from each other with a glass topped coffee table in-between. A zebra print rug is placed at an angle underneath. The room is surrounded with windows that look down to the water. Across from it in the hall that leads into the master bedroom is a curved wrought iron table that holds a collection of carved sandpipers. “We love collecting,” Mrs. Palmore says, and points to another of the couple’s collections. sticks are family items, too, and a scarf that belonged to Mrs. Palmore’s mother has a special place, as well. Just off the living room is a screened side porch furnished with bent willow pieces. The room is a great getaway for reading or just visiting, Mrs. Palmore said. The master bedroom is located at this end of the main level, and a king sized, four poster bed is covered with a coral colored spread with a scrolled design overlay. There’s a bench covered with animal print fabric placed at the foot of the bed, across from a large armoire. Bedside tables hold metal based lamps with bronze colored shades, and the tables have space for stacks of books and family photographs. A cherry buffet that belonged to Palmore’s mother is used for storage, and a pair of ivory upholstered armchairs offer comfortable seating. Windows surround the room, and are placed high in the walls. The adjoining master bath has a maple vanity fitted with double sinks, and wallpaper is muted shades of soft greens. The bath includes a deep tub and walk-in shower. The kitchen opens into the living room with a bar and leather covered stools in-between. A large butcher’s block gives extra work space, and cabinets are maple, topped with grey and black-flecked countertops. Bamboo flooring is covered with an Asian rug in a geometric pattern. makes the perfect place for storing tableware. A wine rack/ server holds additional pieces for entertaining. Around the corner from the butler’s pantry is a laundry area, where another of Mrs. Palmore’s interesting finds is placed, a chandelier made of rich blue and white glass. She found the piece on a trip to San Miguel, and says one of the things she likes best about it is the intricate patterns it projects onto the ceiling when it’s turned on. Upstairs, there are two large guest rooms, both furnished with queen sized mission style beds made of birch. Rows of colorful pillows top soft bed coverings in the rooms, and soft leather armchairs are placed with tables and lamps. Palmore’s work area is upstairs, and has space for a computer and desk, along with a plump ivory couch where one of the couple’s cats likes to doze. In an alcove at the top of the stairs to the second level is another family treasure, a high backed arm chair that came from Palmore’s mother’s home. With its checked pattern, Mrs. Palmore said the family has named it “the chair of many colors.” Beside it is another family piece, an oval table made by Mrs. Palmore’s grandfather, who taught the art of carpentry. Upstairs, too, is the game room, where there’s a pool table and barstools for enjoying a game. This is where Palmore’s autographed guitars hang — there’s one from the Rolling Stones and another from Paul McCartney among the collection. There’s a balcony off the back, and there’s a funny story to go with it. Once when the Palmores were enjoying the view of the lake there, they realized that they had locked themselves

44

out. There aren’t any steps from the second level balcony, so they were stuck. “All we had between us was a credit card and a lighter,” she said. “But it wasn’t too long before Randy had us back inside. He’s kind of that way.” From the pantry beside the kitchen, a covered walkway leads down a path to the garage and guest house, and along the way is a sitting area with a swing and chairs that the Palmores enjoy using for coffee time in the mornings. Just off the path is the spot where the Palmores built a fire ring using huge stones, and there are wooden benches arranged in a circle around it. The guest house has a deep front porch set with square columns at each end, and broad rocking chairs are lined up across. The stone steps hold planters of begonias and full ferns, and rock walls border front flowerbeds. Inside, a living room and full kitchen make sure guests have everything they need, and there’s a large bedroom, as well. The sofa can be made into a bed, and there’s a loft upstairs for two more to sleep. Mrs. Palmore laughs, recalling how she discovered the place on Logan Martin she and her husband now call home. “I had been on a trip to Asia and had just come home from a 23-hour trip,” she said. “I had been on a buying trip and was exhausted.” Her husband called her and said he had “found the place.” When she got there, she said she fell in love with it as well. “And like they say, the rest is history,” she said.

The perfect place Logan Martin the backdrop for Blues Fest, Paws in the Park

The Lakeside Hospice Bluesfest and Car Show had plenty of custom wheels and live music for spectators to enjoy. Story by Elsie Hodnett and Laura Nation Atchison Photos by Brian Schoenhals It brings together great music, food, arts and crafts, and antique cars in a beautiful setting on the lake. The annual Lakeside Hospice Blues Fest and Car Show continued its success this October with a two-day event. “If you love great music and good food, this is the place to be,” said Dr. Mark Fielding, chairman of the annual Lakeside Hospice Blues Fest and Car Show. The annual Lakeside Hospice Blues Fest and Car Show is held at Lakeside Park in Pell City, and the event is free to attend. Donations are accepted benefiting Lakeside Hospice in Pell City. “Even though it drizzled, we had a great crowd that showed up and stayed,” Fielding said. Despite the weather, the Blues Fest is catching on and drew a larger crowd this year. “The music was so good,” he said. “People were dancing and enjoying themselves.” This year’s two-day festival offered blues music and also bluegrass and gospel. “We use good local talent,” Fielding said. “We are always interested in showcasing local talent.” This year’s lineup featured the Mike Erwin Band, the Road House Band, Randy Buell and the Persuaders, headliner Little G. Weevil, Deanna Capps, The Stomp Band, the Pine Mountain Bluegrass Band, the Matthew Powel Band, and local karate and dance demonstrations. “The people who attended liked the variety of music the Blues Fest offered,” Fielding said.

Wet weather played a factor on vendor turnout, but there was still quite a variety of food and arts and crafts for attendees to choose from. “We moved the event from the large parking lot to the Kiwanis pavilion area near Kid’s Kastle,” he said. Fielding said the new location provided easy access to shade and offered a place for attending children to play. “We received lots of compliments on our choice of location this year,” he said. “We plan to use that same location again next year.”

A different perspective

Realtors use boats to show homes Story by Chris Norwood

People have always been willing to pay a premium to be close to the water, to have a clear and interrupted view of the lake. But the view from the lake can be just as important, which is why at least two real estate companies in the area give potential homebuyers the opportunity to view their home from the lake, as well. ERA King Real Estate keeps a boat for precisely this purpose. According to Everett King, “it’s not as obvious in the winter, but all buyers want a chance to see their new home from the water.

56

But I think it’s not so much just seeing the house from the water as it is getting a feel for the environment, for where you are.” There is a practical side to this as well. “When you’re on the water, it’s a whole different ballgame,” King explained. “You can have something that’s only a short distance away by car but can be much further by boat, or vice-versa. Even if you know the street, most people at first don’t know exactly where they in relationship to the water. And it also helps them to learn their way around, like where the nearest marina is or where they can go to get Continued on Page 62

something to eat. They can learn where any sunken islands are, and things like that. It helps to confirm the buyer’s choice and it lets us teach them a little about their new lifestyle.” In many ways, the boat viewing is one of the most important aspects of handling lakeside property. “This is 2009,” King said. “Everybody is starting their real estate searches online, which means by the time we set up a meeting with you, you’ve already seen the view from the street and the inside of the house. Then when you come here, we’ll show you the house on a big screen TV to confirm what you’ve seen online. But when you’re out on the water, you’re looking not only at your house but at the surrounding houses as well. A water neighborhood is very different from a street neighborhood.” King went on to describe the boat tour as “a lakefront living indoctrination, a sort of lifestyle walk through. And I find that people really appreciate it, and most want to do it first. After all, what could be worse than buying a home than buying a boat and knocking the bottom out of it because you didn’t know where the islands were or running out of gas because you couldn’t get to the marina.” ReMax also offers water tours, although Realtor Pam Hendricks said they don’t get many takers. “We offer it to everyone, but some people just don’t care to, or they already own a boat and have already checked out the view from the water. But it takes a long time, and it’s not always that helpful.” Hendrix and her husband, who actually drives the boat, do provide water tours if the potential buyer requests one. “I guess we’ve done that two, three, maybe four times. And it does really help if you’re not familiar with the lake, to see how your house looks and where it is on the water. “We also take a depth finder, so if you do already have a boat, we can make sure that you will be able to launch it from the property you’re looking at.”
