ike the signs say, “Welcome to fall, y’all!” And welcome to our October issue of Lakeside Living, one that we hope brings you meeting more neighbors along the lakeshore, finding out about some of the neat things going on out there and maybe offering some food for thought for the kitchen and for your other creative sides. We were lucky enough to catch championship water skier Joel Day who has extended his water agility to flipping backwards on wakeboards before the water turned too cool. But something tells me a little chill in the air wouldn’t keep Joel from having a little fun out in the water, he’s been a hard hitter with water sports all his life. He’ll tell you how he does his flips and dips and maybe about a few trials and tribulations you can experience when attempting these moves. We’ll see how artist Yvonne Mathews does the things she does from her waterfront home, and learn about the detail and creativity that goes into her work, and about how she found her special creative outlets. You’ll experience the array of nautical collectibles lake resident Sam Marston has come across through the years, making his lakeside home a literal museum of all things marine. Then, we make a visit to the legend of The Pell City Steak House, a longtime landmark and favorite spot for anyone passing through as well as for newcomers and long-timers, too. This is where the plates are piled high with everything from grilled tilapia to perfectly fried butterfly shrimp to “meat and threes” and a selection of hand built sandwiches made to satisfy a hearty appetite. And by the way, “to go boxes” are never a problem to procure here. On the subject of good eats, I’m offering some bread recipes that just say “fall” to me in all the right ways. From using them along with steaming stews and soup to ward off a fall chill, to offering them as appetizers or even breakfast treats, they ooze

the term “comfort food” as well as anything else I know. Adapt them to your needs, add your favorite spread or dips and they take on a whole new role altogether. Not being what you could call a seasoned bread maker, I was amazed that I didn’t end up with wads of sticky stuff not fit for anything but the trash can. We have an exciting whitewater adventure for water adventurers, with some pointers for finding those fun places to test your paddling skills. So here’s to the change of seasons, the change of pace, and another look into the people and places that make the Logan Martin community the place so many love calling home, season after season.

nderneath the shade of a willow tree back on the deck of the Willow Grill at Clear Creek Harbor, artist Yvonne Mathews brings everyday items to life. Mathews specializes in creating personalized ceramic items, wood signs, canvas art, and children’s furniture. “I went to work for a company that specialized in ceramics and they closed so I decided to venture out on my own,” Mathews said. “I’ve just started but it’s been good, it’s been positive.”

After deciding to start her own company, she settled on the name “Nana’s Craft Shack.” Mathews said that much of her inspiration for her work, as well as her company’s name, comes from her six grandchildren. “I just love it all,” Mathews said. “My biggest fans are my grandchildren.” Family is certainly a big part of Mathews’ work. Her husband of 40 years, Dick, has been her righthand man when it comes to supporting her art, especially when she works from home. “My house looks like a studio so we live and work around my hobbies,” Mathews chuckled. “Every room in my house has a bisque or something.”

Artist Yvonne Mathews brings everyday items to life with her company “Nana’s Craft Shack.” Mathews decided to venture out on her own after working for a ceramics company for about seven years.
Mathews and her husband moved here from Florida after retiring. “We moved up here so now he helps me with all my ventures,” Mathews said. “It’s really nice. We make a good team.” But when Mathews is not at home working, you can find her at the Willow Grill either helping out her friend Angie Cooper, or working out on the deck just steps away from the lake. Mathews is considered “a hidden jewel” by Cooper who is more than happy to have her work adorn the restaurant. 8

“I love coming out here because it’s so peaceful,” Mathews said. “When you start painting you get so into what you’re working on. “It’s just a great atmosphere.” Mathews said that she also enjoys “the calm” that the lake gives her and frequently has orders for “Welcome to Logan Martin Lake” and “Willow Grill at Clear Creek Harbor” plate and platters. She said that it is hard to pick a favorite, however painting Christmas-themed ceramics are at the top of her list. “My Christmas stuff is my favorite. I love doing

Artist Yvonne Mathews says that she is inspired by her family, especially her grandchildren who she says are her biggest fans.
Mathews does special orders for individuals as well as large orders for restaurants and companies. “I’ve had orders from Tennessee I’ve had orders from Florida, and Virginia,” Mathew said. “There was a restaurant in Tennessee that ordered coffee mugs and I painted a rooster and the saying: ‘Now I’m in my happy place.’” Mathews has future plans on opening an art shop with Cooper, and branching her work out into local mom and pops shops. Her work can currently be found at the LMo & Co. art gallery in Talladega. “I’d love to get into different stores and offer this to a variety of people,” Mathews said. But for now, Mathews continues to work as orders come rolling in through her Facebook page that features several of her pieces along with “thank yous” from her customers. “It’s just a real unique thing that’s hard to find. No two pieces are the same,” she said “I want them to have the same enjoyment I had when making the piece.” Contact Aziza Jackson at ajackson@dailyhome.com. 14

aking a variety of breads isn’t as hard as you might think. Add these to a simple menu and you have an extra touch guests will love. From sourdough to whole wheat to herb bread and breadsticks, there’s a recipe for you among them. Most of us know that certain aroma of fresh baked bread. There’s just nothing like it. Maybe it’s best described as warm, earthy, welcoming and just plain mmmm. There are so many great breads out there, it’s hard for me to choose a favorite. I think I could live on bread or just about 16
any kind of starch, but I don’t for reasons we all know too well, but a little splurge once in a while probably won’t hurt us too much. At least if we make it ourselves we know what’s in it… The Parmesan Herb Bread I’ll share with you is definitely high on the list, but then I think about warm sourdough bread and my senses want to go there. Of course a good hearty whole grain bread is great, too, but then, there’s pumpernickel with its deep flavor and just enough on the sweet side to barely tell it. For me, none of these breads need butter or anything else one them, when

it’s time to taste, they almost seem tainted if you use too much and cover up that inherent fresh baked flavor. I’ve chosen some of my favorites, including an easy bread stick recipe and one a little more complicated, but worth the time, and I can tell you, if I can put them together and come out with something edible, you can, too. These bread recipes are pretty uncomplicated and help to overcome any of those “dough” or “yeast” fears some of us have. Maybe I’ll eventually graduate to more complicated breads, but these are so good I have to wonder why bother?

Homemade bread is a superb addition to any kind of meal, and for those days when you’re really in a hurry, I’ve included a quick twisted bread stick recipe that will please the most demanding bread lover. All of these freeze well, and can make great housewarming or even dinner party tokens of appreciation. So here goes, let’s start with the Parmesan Herb. You won’t be disappointed, I can promise.
Three and a half cups warm water (110 to 115 degrees, divided). Seven to eight cups all purpose flour, divided ¼ cup nonfat dry milk powder Two tbsp. melted butter Two tbsp. sugar Two tsp. salt Cornmeal
Parmesan Herb Bread What you need:
What you do: In a four quart non-metallic bowl, dissolve yeast in two cups warm water, and let stand for five minutes. Stir in two cups of flour until smooth. Cover loosely with a clean towel. Let stand in a warm place (80 to 90 degrees) to ferment for 48 hours and stir several times daily. (The mixture will become bubbly and rise and have a “yeasty” sour aroma and a transparent yellow liquid will form on the top). Stir in milk powder, butter, salt, the remaining water and enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Do not knead. Cover and let rise in a warm place until the size doubles, about one and a half hours. Turn onto a floured surface and punch dough down. Do not knead. Divide in half. Shape each half into a round loaf. Heavily grease baking sheets and sprinkle with corn meal. Place dough on prepared pans, cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes. With a sharp knife, make three diagonal slashes across the tops of the loaves. (This is really just for looks). Bake at 350 for 10 minutes, and then brush loaves with cold water and continue to bake 35 to 40 minutes longer or until golden brown. Note: Loaves may also be shaped into 24 rolls, using the same method, instead of loaves. Bake for 10 minutes, then 20 to 25 minutes more after brushing with water.
One and ¼ cups warm water (about 110 degrees) Three cups bread flour Two tbsp. dry milk powder (I used real milk) Two tbsp. white sugar One and ½ tsp. salt Two tbsp. butter or margarine, softened Three tbsp. grated Parmesan (I almost double this) One tbsp. dry active yeast One and ½ tsp. dried marjoram One and ½ tsp. dried thyme One tsp. dried basil One tsp. fried oregano (Or you can substitute four tsp. of Italian seasoning in place of the individual spices.)
For a really full herb taste, double the spices. The recipe as written doesn’t have quite the tilt I like. For a bread machine, here’s what you do: Place ingredients in bread machine pan in the order suggested by the manufacturer. Select the basic or white bread cycle and press start. Directions if you use a mixer, your hands and an oven instead. (This is what I do). Mix dry ingredients first, then add the wet ingredients. Mix with mixer until combined, using the flat paddle attachment. Then “knead” the dough with the dough hook attachment on the mixer for six to seven minutes. Then, let the dough rise in the bowl for 45 minutes, covered with a wet towel. Remove dough from bowl and punch dough down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle shape that you can then roll into a loaf shape. (It works out better than you’d expect!) Use a broad oiled spatula or knife to slide the loaf from the rolling surface onto a greased pan (I just use a cookie sheet and the bread holds its shape if I urge it “upward” a bit, and let rise again for 20 to 30 minutes. Bake at 350 for 25 to 35 minutes. Sourdough Bread This one takes a little time-two days for the “base” of it to “get done,” but well worth the wait! What you need: One package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast 18
Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2012
Twisted Bread Sticks Use them as appetizers, snacks or with a meal. I don’t know of a cheese, cheese spread or garlic butter that doesn’t love them. What you need: For the dough Two tsp. instant yeast Two tsp. sugar One and ¼ tsp. salt One tbsp. pizza dough flavor (optional, but adds great taste) One tbsp. King Arthur Easy Roll Dough Improver or Baker’s Special Dry Milk or non-fat dry milk Three cups (11 ounces) King Arthur Italian Style Flour or substitute King Arthur 100 percent Organic White Whole Wheat Flour for half the Italian flour if desired-I didn’t. ¾ cup (6 ounces) lukewarm water, you may need to add at least a third more as you mix if the dough doesn’t form well. I read of someone who substitutes dark beer for half the liquid and raved about it. Two tbsp. olive oil Topping:

A basket of fresh baked bread makes a great centerpiece for any meal.
One egg white beaten with one tbsp. cold water. A heaping 1/3 cup sesame seeds, or a mixture of your favorite seeds.
An alternate breadstick route, if the above seems daunting or you don’t have time! This one’s really quick.
What you do: Mix and knead the dough ingredients, by hand, mixer or bread machine set on the dough cycle to make a soft and supple dough. Divide the dough in half and cover with lightly greased plastic wrap. (I sprayed it with cooking spray). Let it “rest” for at least 15 minutes or up to an hour. Divide the dough in half. Working with one half at a time, pat or roll the dough into a 9 by 13 inch rectangle. Brush dough lightly with the egg white and water, then sprinkle it with seeds. Roll the dough lightly with a rolling pin to press the seeds in. Use a pizza wheel or sharp knife to cut the dough (on the short side) into strips about 3/8 inch wide. Twist the ends of each strip in opposite directions, as though you were wringing out a washcloth, to make a twist and then place them on lightly greased or parchment lined baking sheets. Cover the breadsticks and let them rise for 30 minutes to an hour, until they have puffed noticeably. Preheat oven to 425 and bake for 12 to 14 minutes. Remove from oven and cool on a rack. Makes about three dozen breadsticks.
Soft breadsticks What you need: One and ¼ cups flour Two tsp. sugar One and ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt 2/3 cup milk Three tbsp. melted butter or margarine Two tsp. sesame seeds

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2012
What you do: Combine dry ingredients and gradually add milk to form a soft dough. Knead gently three or four times on a floured surface. Roll out into a rectangle about 10 by five inches and cut into 12 equal sticks. Put the melted butter into a large baking dish (I used a 13 by 9 inch glass dish). Turn the breadsticks to coat with butter then sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake at 450 for 14 to 18 minutes.

Traveling the Pigeon River
I scouted the Upper Nolichucky Gorge, but had to cut my trip short and did not get an opportunity to paddle this section of the Nolichucky. The picture shows the start of the “Quarter Mile” rapid. It’s beautiful country and the river is remote.

stood along the ridge of the gorge, looking down as a large raft sped through the whitewater of the Pigeon River. The raft bobbed up and down in the churning whitewater. The noise from the rapids was so loud my friend, Andrew Smith, 33, of Johnson City, Tenn., had to shout for me to hear him. We were taking one last look at the powerful “Power House” rapids before we carried our small kayaks down the deep gorge for some white-knuckle fun. “It’s like the Nantahala on steroids,” is the way Andrew, a certified raft guide, described the Upper Pigeon River Gorge. All I can say is that this river is amazing. It was by far the most difficult whitewater challenge I have faced. Smith said the Pigeon River starts in Canton, N.C. It flows

86 miles before it joins the French Broad River, just below Newport, Tenn. I camped at the Triple Creek Campground Monday night, before getting up early Tuesday morning so I could meet Andrew for a trip down the Pigeon River. I’ve never met anyone as knowledgeable about rivers and rapids, not just the Pigeon River, but many of the rivers in North Carolina and northern Tennessee, as Andrew. I met Andrew on a paddling trip down the Tuckaseegee River. Andrew has been a river guide on the Nolichucky River for eight years and between rafting and kayaking he has more than 2,000 trips down the Nolichucky. He also has 2,000-plus trips down the Pigeon River, either by raft or kayak. He has guided on the Pigeon River for six years. Andrew started kayaking when he was 15, so he has paddled

for more than 18 years. He has paddled more than 4,000 miles down rivers in 23 states. “At one time this river (the Pigeon) was so polluted that the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) had to come in and shut the river down,” Andrew explained. “Nobody was allowed near the river for just shy of 10 years.” Now the dam release river offers great whitewater kayaking and rafting opportunities. “The Pigeon is a great little Class III play river with many great play spots,” Andrew said. A recreational release is available during the summer on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday each week, starting in May and ending Labor Day weekend. The Pigeon has a lot less boat traffic than the Ocoee River, and
is probably a step down from that river in difficulty. “With four Class IV rapids and 18 Class II rapids in only a fivemile run, this section is packed full of fun,” Andrew said. He said you can actually run the upper gorge twice in a day. That day we decided to run the gorge, along with the easier lower section of the Pigeon River. The lower section of the Pigeon only harbors one Class III rapid called, “Maytag.” It’s the last rapid of the day, which caps off the whitewater adventure. As soon as you put your kayak in below the powerhouse dam, this river starts rocking. You meet the first rapid of the day, “Power House” rapid. “This is one of the bigger rapids of the river and comes right off the bat,” Andrew said. The first mile of the river is one constant rapid, with a few small October 2012 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes 23

eddies to catch along the way. This section has big wave trains and pushy water. “If you take a swim, it could be a long one,” Andrew said. The Pigeon was a little unnerving for me at the beginning, because the first mile is pretty much one big rapid, and includes one rapid named, “Face Full of Water.” Once you reach the bridge, the river current remains pretty stiff, but there are small pools after each rapid. Under the bridge is a rapid named “Meat Grinder.” “You don’t want to be upside down or swim in this rapid,” Andrew said. “It gets its name because of the jagged rocks in the water from when they blasted the rock out to make the bridge.” The next rapid is “Snap Dragon.” “Snap Dragon” is a favorite
play spot for boaters. “Just below this is ‘Roller Coaster,’” Andrew said. “These are the biggest waves on the river, 50 yards of 6-8-foot high waves. Yee Haw!” “Lost Guide” is the first true Class IV rapid on the Upper Pigeon. Andrew said there about four ways to run this rapid. We ran “Lost Guide” by dodging a big top hole on the left side of the river, and then swinging back left to avoid the huge “Lost Guide” keeper hole at the bottom of this rapid. After this rapid there is about one mile of easy water and great views of the Smokey Mountains, before the next rapid, “Double Reactionary.” I considered this rapid one of the most challenging

Ashley McKenzie of Ashville, N.C., surfs in the Class III “Big Rock” rapid on the Nolichucky River.
for me on this run. “This is a big water rapid with very turbulent eddies, and you throw in holes, waves undercut rock, pour overs and to top it off, just 10 yards below is “Super Glue,” a nasty hole that will even hold a big raft in it, a very powerful hole,” Andrew said. “Accelerator” rapid caps off the Upper Pigeon Gorge run. “It’s the last Class IV rapid on the river and one of my favorites,” Andrew said. “It has some killer holes and monster waves, and if you survive this rapid then pat yourself on the back and say, ‘Job well done.’” I almost turned back when I got out and scouted this rapid, but there is no turning back. You had to pretty much run this river-wide ledge completely covered with whitewater and a big ole hole waiting for you at the bottom. It was a real rush, needless to say. And yes, I survived. Tuesday’s trip was like kayaking the river alone. We saw some commercial rafts, but it was nothing like a Saturday, when you had to time it just right to get on the river. It was neat to basically have the river to ourselves, but it is also a little unnerving, because if something went awry, we were on our own. Nothing went wrong, and it was a really good trip down the gorge. After we finished our trip, I followed Andrew to Jonesborough, Tenn. I camped at the Riverpark Campground there for two nights. It’s such a neat camp, right next to the Nolichucky River, which we paddled on Wednesday – a nice easy section of the 26

Nolichucky. There is a Class III rapid along the Nolichucky, right at the camp, where playboaters would come and practice freestyle moves with their small playboats. Some paddlers practiced their rolls in the large pool of water below the rapid. I met several paddlers there from both Tennessee and North Carolina. I also met a top-class professional kayaker, Mike Patterson, who was testing a new Pyranha Jed playboat there. It was a carbon fiber boat, not plastic. It was fun watching him perform amazing moves with the feather-light kayak. And you know I’m always saying you never know who you are going to see on the river. Well not only did I meet Mike, but another kayaker who had family in Birmingham. I started talking to this young kayaker and I eventually realized I went to school with Mark Taylor’s father and his uncles. It’s sort of amazing. Mark was really a nice young man, who just received his college degree in outdoor recreation. He is a pretty darn good kayaker, too. I did paddle an easy section of the Nolichucky River and planned to paddle the Nolichucky Gorge but my time was limited. Despite coming home early, my trip to the Smokey Mountains was a memorable one. I hope to go back another day, but I’m also looking forward to getting back on Logan Martin Lake. So until then, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

rowing up on the water gave Sam Marston a passion for all things nautical that has lasted a lifetime. “I’ve always been fascinated by boats and nautical items,” he said. “I had my first boat when I was 9-years-

old in Mobile. My mother would say go from this wharf to that wharf in her line of vision and I’d just ride back and forth.” Sam grew up in Mullet Point, down from Point Clear on Mobile Bay until he relocated to Charlotte, N.C. in 1982, and

sold his watercraft when he moved. Sam relocated again to Birmingham two years later. “After four or five years in Birmingham, I went to Panama City Beach and rented a stand-up jet ski,” he said. “Then I went to a boat show in Birmingham and bought one. That was my reconnection to the boating world—a stand-up jet ski.” The next year, Sam traded the jet ski in for a bigger one, bought a Ski Nautique the following year and then bought a pontoon boat with his best friend, Jimmie Lay. “When my son, Jon David, graduated from the University of Alabama, we needed a place to corral all these boats—the jet ski, Ski Nautique and the pontoon boat. At that time, I was dating my late wife, Judy Diane, who had a lot to do with the purchase of this lot in Alpine.” Sam said the selling points for that particular piece of property were the small pier, a power pole, a gradual slope to the water and
it had winter water. “When we bought it, there was nothing on the lot but trees, which we had cleared,” he said. “We added a boat lift to the small pier and crowds of people met there every weekend.” Sam and Judy Diane purchased a houseboat, and with the help of friends worked on remodeling it. “We only had it six months and got to run it on the lake once,” he said. “It got struck by lightning, caught fire, burned and sank. It also burned up our pontoon boat that was next to it.” Sam and Judy Diane searched for another houseboat, but were unable to find one. “The only reason I decided to build a house was because a guy walked up one day and asked if I needed any concrete work,” he said. “I asked if he could build a basement and he said yes. Judy and all the girls wanted a bathroom for when the group came up on weekends, so we dug out the area and I drew up the house October 2012 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes 29

plans.” Sam said it took a year to build the house. “I made lots of errors, but got it fixed in the end,” he said. “I’d never built a house before. We did the electrical, plumbing and landscaping ourselves with the help of family and friends. The plan was when Judy and I retired we would tear the roof off and build a retirement home on the second story.” Sam said in the end, the “basement” turned into a lakeside cottage built into the hill bank complete with two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a large great room split into a kitchen and living room. He said Judy Diane really loved to do the landscaping and flowers. “She would have an agenda and tell me what to do—move a rock here, dig a hole there,” he said. “She passed away in 2003, and after that I just maintained it.” Sam said two years ago, he met Glenda Hodge Goldman. “Lo and behold, I found out she was from Talladega County 30

and grew up one mile from this house by water. On our first date, we came up here and she pointed out the house she grew up in. We’ve been dating ever since. I’ve been very blessed to have Glenda in my life.” Sam said Glenda took a real interest in restoring the landscaping back to its original beauty, which the couple continues to work on, as well as adding nautical pieces to decorate the house and the property. “I’ve been collecting nautical everything since the 1990s,” Sam said. “It just kinda happened.” Sam said his first nautical piece is a ship’s wheel he bought from an old friend in Mobile who sells marine hardware. “He had it at his house and I saw it—he gave me a great deal on it,” Sam said. “It was the first nautical thing I bought for the lake house. I glued the handle back on and for a while it was the only thing decorating the walls.” Sam said another nautical piece is a light marker from one of the points in Mobile Bay, which he got from a friend.

Marston’s collecting habit began with the purchase of a ship’s wheel.
“What’s unusual is that they are 16-volt lights,” he said. “I had to get a special transformer for it because on the water they had battery boxes. The light has four light bulbs so if one burns out in the middle of the night, it switches automatically to the next one.” Sam said his three older brothers, Dude, Richard and George, have each contributed to his nautical collection. “I’m always on the lookout for paddles and oars,” he said. “Dude made a paddle out of a solid piece of Catalpa wood in 2007 and gave it to me because of my obsession with collecting paddles and oars.” Sam said his sisters-in-law on Judy Diane’s side made them two paddles for Christmas one year when they purchased the Chris Craft Capri he had a boyhood dream of owning. Sam said Richard made him a fish in 2006 out of two wooden 2-by-8s with a piece of plywood between them glued together, with nails for teeth. “The art is how pretty it is—painting it was painstaking and time-consuming,” he said. Sam said George was in shipbuilding in Mobile and got a tug prop from a salvage company. “He gave it to me for a song,” Sam said. Sam used the tug prop with an old hatch cover he mounted the letters MARSTON on to create a sign part way down the walkway to the pier. Amid all the nautical pieces stands a 1983 AMI jukebox.

Marston surprised his late wife with the gift of a 1983 AMI jukebox after they built the house. The original AMI plays 45’s and holds 100 records. Speakers feed inside and outside the house and if you turn the music up loud it can be heard across the lake.
“The jukebox was a surprise gift to my late wife after we built the house,” he said. “I was working with a vending company and it came out of a ‘Country Honky-tonk.’ It’s an original AMI with 45’s. It holds 100 records and came with mostly country music although we added to it.” Sam said the jukebox still works and has speakers that feed inside and outside the house. “We really had lots of fun and lots of dancing,” he said. “If you turn it up real loud, you can hear it across the lake.” A bent boat propeller hangs above one doorway with a plaque that reads “When “BRASS” meets the “ROCKS” of Lake Logan Martin, August 1998.” Sam said the bent boat propeller serves as a reminder of when he learned about the different water levels on the lake. “We figured out the difference between summer and winter pool the hard way,” he said. “We were riding and I kept seeing shadows in the water. All of a sudden, I heard a horrible noise— like the Titanic hitting an iceberg. I thought we were going down, but knew we weren’t in danger because if it was shallow enough to hit rocks, we could just step out.” 34
Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2012
Sam said like the jukebox, not every decoration is nautical— just most of them. His latest acquisition is a traffic signal purchased this year. “I don’t really know why I bought it,” he said. “I kept driving by it at Spring Creek Antiques in Vincent and it kept calling to me, so I finally bought it and put it up.” Sam also has a garage he built for the Criss Craft Capri that also serves as his workbench to fix engines, another hobby he has. In addition to the Criss Craft Capri and several other boats, Sam has a collection of “Zoom Zooms.” The first Zoom Zoom, named after his grandson, Jon, is a 1955 Orlando Clipper with a 1955 Mercury Mark 25-horsepower motor. Zoom Zoom II is a 1957 Feather Craft Ranger III with a 1986 Yamaha 30-horsepower engine. Zoom Zoom Jr. is a replica of a 1950s hydroplane. “Everything here has been picked up over the last 20 to 25 years,” he said. “Each one has its own story, and Glenda has given me the inspiration to bring the house back to what it was when my wife was alive.”

Kneeboarding Adventure Joel Day takes it to 360 degrees By KENNY FARMER File Photos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS

rom competitive skiing to kneeboarding to watching the sunset, Pell City’s Joel Day says there is no place he’d rather be than on Logan Martin Lake. Day began skiing when he was six years old and added kneeboarding to his resume at the age of 12. He got his first boat when he was 12 years old. The boat, a 15 foot fiberglass Queencraft with a 25 horsepower motor, was operated by hand controls and had no steering wheel. Day says he used his dad’s riding lawn mower to put it in and pull it out of the water. Day worked at several jobs, including Dairy Queen and Big B in Pell City, to help pay for the boat, insurance and gas. “My parents knew if I was helping pay, I would take much better care of it (the boat),” said Day. “They were right.” Day said he and his friends would travel out on the lake every day, including the winter months. “We’d always have a good time,” he said. Day has also taught many people in the area to ski, including children at Camp Cosby. “I guess friends, family and everybody, I’ve probably taught 100 people how to ski or kneeboard.” Day also competed in many tournaments, both on kneeboard and slalom ski, on Logan Martin, Lake Martin, Smith Lake and Neely Henry. At the age of 14, Day began practicing on his kneeboard in hopes of one day being able to flip 360 degrees while being pulled behind his boat. Within a few months, he achieved his goal. “It probably took six months of actually trying and probably about 300 crashes before I actually made it,” said Day. Twenty-five years after his first successful flip on the

kneeboard, Day still enjoys the thrill. “From the time I hit the wake and start the roll, till the flip is complete and I land...there is no sound,” says Day. “Not the waves, the boat...anything. Its like putting a movie in slow motion from the time I take off till the time I land. Once I land, it’s like you push play again on the movie and all the sounds come back.” Day says the hobby can be rough on the body at times. “Especially now at (age) 39. It takes a few weeks to recover now, where it used to only take overnight.” Day has passed his love of the lake down to his two children, Elizabeth, 13, and Ryker, 3. He says both of his children have accompanied him on the kneeboard. Elizabeth has joined him on the kneeboard for several years now, while Ryker made his first trip earlier this summer. “I hope to have him (Ryker) turning flips by the time he’s seven,” said Day. To Day, nothing compares to the sights, sounds and adventures that come with the lake. “I’ve always enjoyed it,” said Day. “I grew up here.”

or just about as long as there has been a Pell City, the building that houses the Pell City Steak House has been part of it. And for as long as many residents can remember, it has been a steak house owned and operated by Joe Wheeler. According to office manager Janice Spann, the building

originally housed a hotel and general store. It became the Pell City Steak House in 1948. Wheeler took over in 1963 and has been pretty much running things ever since. The restaurant sports an old-fashioned neon sign in the shape of a gigantic T-bone steak, which has become a popular photo backdrop and a landmark in its own right. But it is the food

and service once you get inside that makes a visit memorable, and keeps the locals coming back for more, Spann said. And Wheeler is the key to that. “Joe really is the steak house,” she said. He’s also had some help from some exceptionally long-term employees, including kitchen manager Shirley Posey who has worked at the steak house since 1969. Although the steaks are the obvious featured items here, the hamburger steak and jumbo shrimp dinners are also very, very popular nighttime menu items. “Joe still cuts all the steaks himself,” she said. “I like to think of what he does here is country cooking at its best. The chicken and dressing and banana pudding are also wonderful, and our home-fried onion rings have been featured in Southern Living October 2012 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes 39

We just use real, quality meat.” Steaks include an 8 ounce filet mignon, a 12 ounce sirloin, a 14 ounce ribeye and an 18 ounce T-bone. The jumbo shrimp comes either grilled or fried, as can the snapper, tilapia and catfish. They have oysters as well. There are also daily specials, including chicken and dressing (“always on Sunday,” Spann says), broccoli casserole, sweet potato casseroles, homemade cobblers (“just unreal”), macaroni and cheese and fried chicken. There are also beef, chicken, pork and fish entrees available daily, with 10 sides to choose from. Lunch specials are generally available until about 4 p.m. and
include a meat and three sides for $6.25 or a meat and two for slightly less, plus a drink. On the evening menu, a fried chicken dinner runs $9.95, catfish $8.95 and the larger steaks heading into the $20 range. Sandwiches are also available, and an old fashioned hamburger is only $3.95. They are open seven days per week, from 10:30 a.m. to around 9 or 9:30 p.m., depending on the time of year. The restaurant seats 175, with outdoor seating available, and has a staff of around 20. “That’s the way Joe is,” Spann said, “he’s always looking out for his employees and his customers.” And of course, after all these years, the long-term staff at the Steak House has seen generations coming through. “It’s not unusual for us to see couples that had their first date here, proposed here and had their marriage dinner here, and now they’re coming in with their kids and their grandkids.”

Lakeside Agent Spotlight
Agent Tina Stallings Loves the Lake Living on Logan Martin gives her an edge By MARK LEDBETTER Tina Stallings
P
erhaps it is Tina Stallings’ rich and diverse background that gives her the desire to help her clients ensure the home they purchase remains theirs even in difficult financial times. “I help buyers and sellers understand the purchasing process,” says Stallings. “My job is to bring buyer and seller together and facilitate the sales transaction.” Stallings says she provides her clients access to and information about all properties listed in the multiple listing service, or MLS system. Stallings was born and raised in the Canal Zone in Panama in one of the 12 Panama Canal Company towns built to accommodate the 35,000 civilian workers. Stallings describes Panama as beautifully diverse geographically with nearly half of the country as jungle or rain forest. She says there are small plains and a mountainous area with an extinct volcano reaching an elevation of 11,080 feet. “That was a great place to grow up,” says Stallings. Stallings says the transition of moving to the United States was difficult, but said moving to Alabama to attend college was the best idea she had. Stallings is married to Chuck, an aircraft mechanic, a pilot, and an aeronautical engineer and they live on Logan Martin. They have five sons, Casey, Chris, Kyle, Chip, and Croy. 54
Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2012
Casey and Chris are married and their families live in the Pell City area. After serving as an English language tutor, Stallings says she chose to study real estate and make it a career in early 2011. She says, “I took a 60-hour online class, passed the exam, and took another 30-hour class and received my realtor’s license.” “I like math, economics and the efficiencies of the free market. I also like working with people,” Stallings says. “Assisting buyers and sellers of real property fulfills all those likes.” Stallings also teaches an English Language class to foreign language students at First Baptist Church Pell City. Stallings says a major concern she has is ensuring that property owners don’t lose their property if they fail to pay their annual property tax. “Currently, a property owner can lose their property if they cannot, or do not, pay the property tax regardless of the value of the property,” Stallings says. She says it is one of her goals to see Alabama allow allodial title for real property that allows a person who owns and occupies a property to retain their property unencumbered from the state rather than the current law requiring annual property tax. Stallings works with Fields Gossett Realty in Pell City. Contact Mark Ledbetter at mledbetter@dailyhome. com.
