ry m Growth to Richness through Music
SITE Craigleith Retail Park SITE AT FACE VALUE The site at face value is a Retail park built simply for the purpose of capital. The cheap, steel construction is purely functional, allowing the emphasis to be defined by the variety of global megabrands situated to exhibit and sell their products to customers. Expandable and adjustable, the buildings are made to serve the ever-changing brands that occupy them, and are ultimately completely subservient to market needs. The whole site is thus orchestrated as a theater of consumerism, with signs and billboards luring people in, and for ease of access a large carpark occupies most of the site.
VALUE NOTIONS While the site used to be of great value in the past: buried underneath is the quarry which produced most of Edinburgh’s building stone, it’s now reduced to a commercial centre. Rubbish infill fills in the space which used to bustle with rich sandstone. Any real signs of historic or geological value are tucked away from plain site. The quarry face, a geological site of importance, is hidden behind Sainsbury’s, with no clear signage and only a small pathway leading you there. The architecture of the site is a prime example of value given to capital over geological, cultural and historic significance. The drawings on the opposite pages were made in collaboration with Sonakshi Pandit and Enrico Luo

The light gray hatch indicates the paving removed at the back of the buildings, whereas the darker hatch shows the paving being relocated in an area which will act as a public square. The light grey building will be removed completely, its structure reused in my scheme.

DECONSTRUCTING PIANOS Using Piano Frames as Structure
PIANO FRAMES AS VAULTS Besides reusing as much of the existing buildings as possible, the brief also called for using and upcycling a disposed item as building material. Visiting a local community workshop with a plethora of disposed pianos, I discovered that many people throw away their pianos due to lack of space or cost of repairs. The disposed piano, an object embodying the shifting cultural values of today’s society from meaning to materialism, gives plenty of oppurtinities as a building material. Its cast iron frame of its interior is tested for experimented with for structural solutions with final outcome the vault structure pictured to the left.

ASSEMBLY The Music School
WELDING OFF SITE
The cast iron piano frames are welded off site as a prefabricated unit, to minize costs and onsite work.
PIANO FRAMES WELDED TO STEEL PLATE The cast iron piano frames are welded together with a steel plate for quick on-site assembly.
ON-SITE ERECTION
The piano frame vault-unit is transported on site and erected on top of the already constructed brick cavity wall.
ASSEMBLY
The vaults and steel plate are screwed on the brick with 1.5 m long heavy restraint straps at the top and sides. Another course of bricks is then laid on top and on the side. Following, the roof layers are assembled on top, the first layer of brick, then the vapour control layer, then insulation, then the breather membrane and and then 10 the outer brick layer.
MUSIC SCHOOL EXPANSION The music school expands when more pianos are disposed of and more of the frames can be used as structure. As a symbolic gesture as well as a literal one, the more pianos are deemed as ‘invaluable’, the more they are given a new life through the scheme and the more people will be able to learn and practice music. As a ‘luxury’ upcycled object, it cannot be utilised everywhere in the scheme from the beginning until more and more are collected.

Sectional Construction Isometric of Brick Catalan Vault BRICK CATALAN VAULTS With the piano frames occupying a small space, there needed to be a second structural system in place to cover the rest of the extension space housing the timber processing space. Since the concept of vaults had been introduced to the piano frames, vaults could be introduced in brick form in the design as well.
3. REMOVED AND STRUCTURE IS REUSED Rose

CUT
Any removed structure is reused in the extension of the scheme and for the walkway. Since the existing scheme already utilises a steel structure, it seems most productive to continue with it throughout. Reusing the beams is suitable as structures such as the one in Craigleith are simple portal frame structures and are made with assembly and disassembly in mind in order for expansions or alterations. However, it should be noted that additional time for deconstruction should be allowed for in the project plan.
12 4. ENVELOPE IS ADDED
When researching the appropriate type of vaults, I decided on Catalan vaults, or ‘Timbrel Vaults’. These vaults use fast drying mortar in order to set the brick in place fast, since no or limited formwork is used. Besides this being more sustainable, it also creates jobs by teaching the local labour the method of construction and assembly.

APPROACH and Integration
TOPOS My proposal is located on the south-western part of the site. Existing buildings and structure are utilised as much as possible, shown in red in the drawings. My proposal integrates piano and timber processing spaces, alongside with public functions like the music school, a gallery and exhibition space, and an outdoor performance space. The materials and the public therefore intermingle in certain moments and material flows and processes are visible and in some cases interactive. The north side of the project is a lorry circulation space which allows for material drop-off and pick-up. The project acts a de-centralised point of attraction outside the city, promoting music and culture, educating the public about the upcycling process, creating jobs and thus furthering the notion of ‘degrowth’.

ctures Coexistence and Multiscalar Awareness
SITE AND BIOSPHERE CONTESTED POWER The constant battle between the human, non human and inhuman, a choreographed push and shove between existing relations of power in the Port of Leith was the main concept of this project. The significance of the human as dominant is questioned. Here, the Port of Leith becomes the territory that exists through tensions between the three. The site and its changes is examined historically through mappings and are overlayed through a physical model. Three derelict cranes form a point of interest and their existing biosphere and its lifecycle is examined.

BIRDS
Lichen - Xanthoria Parietina A lichen is not a single organism; it is a stable symbiotic association between a fungus and algae and/or cyanobacteria. Like all fungi, lichen fungi require carbon as a food source; this is provided by their symbiotic algae and/or cyanobacteria, that are photosynthetic. Xanthoria parietina is a very pollution-tolerant species. In laboratory experiments, this species can tolerate exposure to air contaminants and bisulphite ions with little or no damaging effect. It is also tolerant of heavy metal contamination. For these reasons, this species has found use as a biomonitor for measuring levels of toxic elements.

Common Wasp - Vespula Vulgaris Wasps eat flies, aphids, caterpillars and other invertebrates, making them an insect-controlling predator. They are amazing architects, building hexagonal paper nests from chewed up wood and are important pollinators. In late spring, large wasps can be seen. These are queens who are looking for suitable nest sites. These can be deserted mammal holes, cracks in walls or holes in trees.

HYBRID REALITIES PROPOSITION A non-intrusive walkway is proposed, weaving under , through and next to the cranes. Viewing devices and experiental chambers like the bee tube, acoustic chamber, and land reef are implemented to make small microorganisms visible, and thus make the public conscious of the plethora of life situated around them. In this way, the humancentric position as dominant is challenged and the public is made conscious of how even places labelled as ‘derelict’ for humans, are a home to many other life forms. The walkway consists of scaffolding that consists of changeable units, both in plan and in section, in order to allow seasonal plants to flourish in their designated and preferable area.
