Analysing the context of Sheffield city centre reveals problematic conditions. I aim to strengthen such a problematic area, while re-engaging with place.

NATURAL VENTILATION STRATEGY Stack effect and natural ventilation are the two types of ventilation strategies that can be explored in combination on the double skin envelope of the building. Here cold air enters the room, and because it is denser than the warmer air already in the room it sinks. The lower density warmer air rises up and exits the room, creating a warm current flowing in the double Skin of the building. This benefits the design as the warm current in the double façade acts as an a dditional insulation layer on the envelope;; reducing even further the heat loses and the running cost of the building.

A South Yorkshire Boutique IKEA Showroom Year 3

Conceptual section -Exposed showroom The boutique today has become an experience rather than a shop, more like a theme park for grownups. In a world where everything is so readily available and in such a variety of colours types and prices, people can buy their everyday products online, products they already know and the brands they are loyal to. Therefore they search for that something extra in their shopping experience. This boutique should offer a range of facilities in order to be successful in today’s society. I am aiming to change the Ikea experience by designing a unique Ikea boutique in the City centre of Sheffield. I am designing a hybrid of a conventional Ikea market area and a café area together with a multi use showroom space. People can rent out the single rooms in showroom space over night, allowing them to “try on” the products before buying them. Testing the Ikea products offers two main benefits;; it improves the shopping experience of the customers and allows experts to examine how the customers view and react to the products. This “living” boutique essentially becomes like a market research facility of IKEA products, where people are being surveyed and examined on how they use and perceive each of the product, for the benefit of IKEA retailers.

This real life testing involves constant monitoring of the customers, with- out actually intervening the customers’ life. This however brings out a darker side of retail, where people undergo different tests without even knowing it, in some cases. The darker side of retail and how it can manipulate people for the retailers benefit is expressed and revealed through architecture.

The conceptual section above shows these informal settlements in relation to the greater context and the underground networks below that lead to the non-occupied side of Cyprus.

AA Visiting School // CYPRUS Workshop // Group Project 2013 Group Members: Team: Andreas Tsestos, Panayiotis Hadjisergis, Constantina Avraamides, Ellie Shouer, Natasa Kitiri

The central idea of the 2013 Cyprus Visiting School was to respond to a substantial growth of Athienou within its restricting boundaries today. Through our proposal we try to convey the cynicism of manmade boundaries and how they distort perceptions. Louroujina is a Turkish Cypriot village on the North Side of the Buffer Zone, which neighbours with Athienou on the West, and intensifies the boundary between Athienou and Nicosia. We are focusing on the problem of illegal immigration that currently exists in Cyprus, exploring what social and architectural effects this can have on an expanding city. In our proposal we introduce the parameters and how they affect the development of an informal settlement in Louroujina, due to the rapid expansion of Athienou, by simulating growth patterns.

Cultural Centre // Liverpool Year 2 // Final Project

The Programme is about designing a cultural centre in the city of Liverpool. This Cultural centre would not only promote the culture and the arts of Liverpool, but it needs to house and bring together as many of the ethnic groups making their home in Liverpool today. It is equally important to make them feel part of the city of Liverpool itself. In order to integrate the people in my design I first related the migration of birds to the migration of people around the world. Secondly the “shrill, guttural caw” of the seagulls is actually the city’s soundtrack, and part of what makes Liverpool what is is today. Consequently I associated the seagulls with the design of the cultural centre, to set the building in context, which is evident in the facades and the design of the building. ^Sectional Perspective cut through from East to Southwest at the auditorium and the void.
