Barbados Being uninhabited island, although under Spanish sovereignty, the British occupied it and settled in the 1620s AD on the current site of Holetown on the Caribbean coast. It is believed that Native American groups may have lived on the island and to come to Barbados via the Atlantic Ocean. It is presumed that his arrival was from Venezuela, which occurred in a canoe, and are provided as evidence found evidence of subsequent lifestyle on the island, this is inferred by some artifacts left behind and found in Aboriginal settlements or stays. It extrapolates that, as elsewhere in the Eastern Caribbean, Arawak Indians may have been annihilated by invading Caribs, who is supposed to have subsequently abandoned the island around 1200.

With the arrival of the first British settlers, they claimed the island in the name of King James I in 1627-1628 with a natural opposition of Spain. Until independence in 1966, Barbados was under uninterrupted British control. Nevertheless, Barbados always enjoyed a large measure of local autonomy. Its House of Assembly began meeting in 1639. Among the important initial British figures was Sir William Courteen. Also, Captain Henry Powell, and a group of settlers and slaves who settled in what is now Holetown, were influential in the development of the first British settlements in Barbados.


Elizabeth II is known as the Queen of Barbados, and its head of state and is represented by a Governor General. In Barbados the title that bears the Queen is to: "By the Grace of God, Queen of Barbados and of Her other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth of Nations." The current government is proposing that Barbados is established as a republic within the Commonwealth of Nations with honorary president replacing the Queen.

Executive power rests with the Prime Minister and his cabinet. The prime minister is usually the leader of the party winning the elections to the Assembly, which is the lower house of Parliament and has 28 seats that are renewed every five years. The Senate has 21 members appointed by the Governor General.

Barbados is a full member of the Caribbean Community or CARICOM.


Tourism is a major source of income and that this country is well prepared for this. It has high quality hotels and beaches and culture mixed between English and the Caribbean are the perfect mix for a peaceful life and a beautiful place.

The island of Barbados has one major airport, Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA), which is IATA identifier BGI. This airport receives daily flights by several major companies from all parts of the world, as well as regional and charter flights. It is the most important center of Eastern Caribbean air transport and is currently being renovated and expanded.


The island is well developed, has good hotels, timeshare apartments, etc.. The southern and western coasts of Barbados are popular for the clarity of its waters and white and pink sand beaches. Along the east coast, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, there are places for surfing. The shopping areas are another attraction of Barbados, with a wide variety of duty-free shopping. It is possible to go out at night in most tourist areas and in Saint Lawrence Gap. Other attractions include wildlife reserves, jewelry, spear fishing, helicopter rides, golf, festivals, hiking, cave exploring, etc.
