A Happy New Year for UK Construction?
An Outlook on the UK Construction Industry in 2011 - Barbour ABI Construction Review by Dr. Noble Francis - UK Construction Products Association The key focus in 2011 will be on the contrast between private and public sector construction, with the former recovering and the latter falling sharply. Those contractors fortunate enough to be in sectors expected to grow, in addition to those able to move between sectors, are likely to enjoy growth at the expense of those heavily reliant on public sector work. Private housing starts are anticipated to grow this year by 5%, following last year’s estimated 35% rise. Public housing, on the other hand, is expected to fall by 25% in 2011, unsurprising given that the capital budget for DCLG will fall 65% by 2014. We are anticipating 105,000 GB private starts with public starts totalling 24,000. However, this is still less than half the number of households DCLG forecasts will be created each year. With this excess demand, we are also

anticipating private housing growth in subsequent years despite concerns over economic growth and bank lending. Read more »
