e:
The Reliability Revolution
The new B877F backhoe loader builds on the SDLG reputation for reliability, adding versatility and superb operational control. When using the excavator, the front bucket of the B877F is put to work as a stabilising ground support. Cab ergonomics have been optimised for visibility, operator comfort and efficiency. A powerful AC system is offered as standard, while a powerful new 70 kW engine and a 55º steering angle add to the versatility. Reliability is key with SDLG, so access for regular servicing and inspection has been made really easy with everything necessary in comfortable reach. All filters are located centrally and a large rear-hinged hood offers swift access to the engine. The SDLG Reliability Revolution is an ongoing process – but our message never changes: SDLG reliability brings you profitability. facebook.com/sdlgcm

encouraging signs March was a month that could set a trend in the construction equipment sector in the Middle East region. It saw the inaugural edition of the Big 5 Heavy show, the first stand-alone heavy equipment and machinery exhibition in the region. While equipment was always a part of the main Big 5 construction exhibition held every year at the Dubai World Trade Centre, this year the segment was taken out and made an event on its own. The aim was obviously to provide a separate and targeted platform for the machinery sector, where manufacturers and dealers could meet a focused audience of customers with requirements for equipment. And, going by the people yours truly spoke with at the event, that goal seems to have been met in the main. Of course, not everyone was completely satisfied with the event and the turnout it attracted, with some participants saying they would reconsider participating in it the next time around. Most, however, felt the response was adequate for a first-time event. And some big names, such as Caterpillar and Liebherr, thought the event was important enough to introduce their recent global launches for the first time in the region. While Cat and its dealer Al-Bahar showed off the new Next Generation 20t excavator and a new wheel loader in their joint stand, Liebherr promoted its latest transit mixer, the 1304. Elsewhere in this issue, we take a look at what Intermat has to offer this month. The triennial exhibition is one of the most important for the equipment industry globally, and especially for the EMEA region, and we present a preview of some of the new launches expected at the show.
The AWP sector is also in focus in this issue. As one of the most important segments of the region’s equipment industry, the major manufacturers are concentrating on not only new models but also on service and safety features as differentiators. As differentiators go, MB Crusher is making a big difference with its mobile crushing and screening equipment. The Italian company’s crusher buckets are working in numerous job-sites in the wider Middle East region and we bring you vignettes from a few of them. The industry’s biggest development for the future came from the Big 5 Heavy and from a local name. Bothani Cranes is setting up a tower crane factory in the UAE, making it the first manufacturer in the entire region. Production is slated to start around July and the company made use of its participation in the event to raise awareness about its operations. According to top officials, the response was very encouraging and they received several proposals for partnerships. At CMME, we will follow the story keenly over the next few months and let our readers know how the first home-grown Middle Eastern tower crane manufacturer fares. Watch this space!

Educating and raising awareness of cybersecurity should be a major focus for the regional construction industry, given the emphasis and focus on BIM adoption. While it is certainly a necessary step forward for construction firms, and will lead to greater success in delivering projects, it also opens up a number of concerns. The story, ‘Gulf economies vulnerable to cyberattacks’, touched upon this, when it said that financial losses due to cyberattacks on the oil and gas industry were as much as $1 billion in 2017. If we are to move forward as a construction industry, then we need to embrace BIM, but the sharing and open-sourcing of information between project partners and stakeholders, also increases the need for strong cybersecurity, as all it will take is one slip in the chain for hackers to expose confidential data and information on projects worth billions of dollars. I hope this is something authorities are focusing on, while they implement their cyber-security strategies in the country, and I hope the construction industry follows closely.

A spectacular event held in Dubai last month was used by Mercedes-Benz to launch its latest generation of Arocs and Actros heavy duty vehicles. This follows more than 6m km of endurance runs conducted by the Mercedes-Benz Trucks Testing Centre in Abu Dhabi. Mercedes-Benz said both Actros and Arocs feature a new distinctive cab design for comfort and ease of use. The trucks also include a “highly sophisticated and reliable single source” drivetrain and new “resilient, powerful and efficient engines” which are available in Euro III, IV and V emission norms, offering a wide range of power outputs from 326hp up to 625hp. “Combined with the latest generation of the Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated gearbox equipped as standard, the Actros and Arocs achieve highest levels of fuel efficiency, contributing to the profitability of the fleet operators,” said the company. The Mercedes-Benz Arocs is intended for construction and off-road applications
and is available as chassis-, mixer-, tipperand all-wheel-drive variants – from 4×2 to 8×8 configurations with gross combination weights (GCW) of up to 250t. “When exceptional robustness is required along with maximum loadbearing capability for use on construction sites or away from surfaced roads, then the new Arocs is the right choice,” said Stefan Buchner, head of Mercedes-Benz Trucks. “The extremely resilient Arocs can work under the toughest off-road conditions, far from any highway.” Mercedes-Benz describes the Actros as a long-distance and distribution haulage vehicle. The truck is one of the best-selling vehicles in its class and celebrated the 20th anniversary of its regional debut last year. Also there are two new specialised heavyhaulage vehicles – the Actros SLT and the Arocs SLT – which complement the range. According to the company, the launch opens up a new chapter in the heavy-duty truck segment for both the model series.

Himoinsa introduces new light tower Spanish generator and power products giant Himoinsa has introduced its new APOLO AS4005 ECO light tower, which has two 500W LED spotlights, providing a light output of 120,000 lumens with fuel consumption of 0.83l/h. Equipped with a 4.5kVA Yanmar engine and a Meccalte alternator, the tower weighs 600kg, making it one of the lightest on the market, says Himoinsa. It also has a 114l fuel tank that gives the lights a running time of 137 hours, equivalent to 17 nights’ work, without refuelling. When the generator is working at 100% load in addition to the lights being on, its fuel consumption is 1.7l/h and it has a running time of 67 hours, almost three days of continuous work - making the tower attractive for the construction and events sectors.
Its mast manually extends to 6m and rotates 360 degrees. Given the tower’s size of 2.3m by 1.3m by 2.8m, up to 22 units can be transported in a trailer or 40-foot container. The unit includes the new M7T controller, which improves user experience, says Himoinsa.

KIT SPOTTING APRIL 2016 2018
Terex Tower in GermAn GAs holder
A
Terex tower crane has been planted inside a giant old gas holder in the German town of Wuppertal, where it will stay to assist in the construction of a four-storey building that the structure’s owners, Gaskessel Wuppertal GmbH & Co. KG, have commissioned to put the old gas holder to new use. When the general managers of Gaskessel Wuppertal, Thomas Drescher, Marcello Groß and Daniel Mai, decided to erect the four-storey building inside it – at a distance of 3m from the outer shell – that left way too little space for setting up the indispensable construction crane, which is why a Terex CTT 91 TS12 tower crane was transplanted straight into the building instead. The Wuppertal gas holder is not just a formidable relic of the city’s industrial past, but also a skyline-defining landmark that is worth preserving. However, repurposing it is a difficult task. Nothing can be mounted on the outer shell, which is made of lightweight metal, as it was designed for the sole purpose of withstanding gas pressure. This did not scare off the trio of project initiators, however. Instead, they developed a concept unique in Europe: they decided to put up a fourstorey building with 4,000sqm of event, fitness, bar and restaurant space inside the 67m-tall gas holder. Since the new building was to be erected 3m from the gas holder’s outer shell, the space available for crane work would be extremely limited. For this reason, the first phase of construction consisted of erecting a staircase tower
with an elevator shaft right at the centre of the new building so that the rest of it could be put together from there. The solution: the staircase, together with the elevator shaft, would function as a crane tower on which a jib would be mounted. “A ready-made crane would not have allowed us to put our idea into practice. That’s why we contacted Terex Cranes and asked them to manufacture a suitable crane for us with a special length and set-up configuration,” Mai said. Terex engineering staff made a special-purpose crane based on a CTT 91 TS12 tower crane. “The two decisive reasons to use the CTT 91 TS12 as a basis were the low individual weights of its components and its appealing look, which matches the architecture. Also, upon request, we painted the model custom black and grey,” says sales manager Jörg Körtgen, who oversaw the project with Terex head assembly technician Mirco Manarin. For the tower crane to be installed on the staircase, an entrance gate first had to be cut into the shell of the building, just big enough for a mobile crane to drive into the gas holder. Due to space constraints, the only additional equipment was a forklift truck. “Since the CTT 91 TS12 is designed for ease of assembly, we managed perfectly,” Manarin says. It took the threeperson team just a day to install the crane head on the 25.8m-tall staircase tower. The permanently installed CTT 91 TS12 covers all working areas within the gas holder and can lift loads of up to 5t. “We’ll be using it to set up things in the event and exhibition areas, as well as for maintenance,” Mai explains.

hat’s in a name? A Hitachi Sumitomo crawler crane by any other name would lift just as efficiently. With apologies to literature aficionados, this paraphrasing of some immortal lines really does bring out the latest development at the illustrious crawler crane manufacturer. With 10 lattice boom crawler crane models in various capacities in its range, and with a reputation for Japanese quality, the manufacturer has always been among the most noted in its sector both worldwide and in the Middle East. Speaking with CMME, Wim Aernouts, director, Middle East Crane Equipment Trading (MECET), the regional dealer of the crane brand, says that with a new launch early this year and demand steady, the company has recorded a successful 2017 while continuing its performance this year as well. And now, due to a corporate restructuring between the owners Sumitomo Heavy Industries Construction Crane Co.Ltd (SHI) and Hitachi Construction Machinery (HCM), the manufacturer is rebranding its products as HSC Cranes. No longer will the branding on the cranes be Hitachi-Sumitomo, which will now be replaced with the name HSC. Everything else, however, remains the same as before, Piet Van Bakergem, general manager, Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East (HMEC), says. And to emphasize the point, there is also a new slogan: “Same crane. New name.” “Our business continues as usual. We are delivering the same products in the market as we have always done – and they are products that have become immensely popular among crane users. So we do not expect any impact of this branding decision on our market, sales-wise, as the products remain the same,” explains Aernouts. “It was only a shareholders’ decision between HCM and SHI, with SHI buying some of the shares from HCM and increasing its holding in the joint venture. This is what led to the re-branding. Of course, apart from the mathematics of shareholding percentages, it essentially remains the same company that has made itself a global favourite in cranes and is a market leader in the Middle East as well. The products remain 100% the same, apart from a very small change in the exterior color. That’s all.” Earlier, a statement from the manufacturer said the new brand name, logo and company name – Sumitomo Heavy Industries Construction Cranes Co Ltd – would all come into effect on April 1 this year. “It has been 15 years since Hitachi Construction Machinery’s Crane division and Sumitomo Heavy Industries Group’s crane company combined their areas of expertise, giving rise to Hitachi Sumitomo Heavy Industries Construction Crane. From April 2018, we will head out on a new chapter as a global expert in the field of cranes, devising solutions spanning design and manufacturing to sales and service. To better meet the needs of our customers everywhere around the
world, we will set forth with a new company name,” said the statement. Van Bakergem adds: “The HSC branding on the cranes will have a great recall in the market. Under the new branding, the abbreviation now stands for three core values of Sumitomo cranes. The H now stands for ‘High quality’, the S for ‘Satisfaction’ and the C for ‘Confidence’. Each of these has a key phrase associated with it, which are respectively ‘Exceptional quality everywhere’, ‘Continually and consistently meeting customer needs’ and ‘Further reinforcing relationships of trust’. “Actually, we expect this change to have a positive impact on the market. We’re looking forward to an even better future, as SHI looks to have plans to invest in the product range and make it an even wider offering.” Speaking of a wider offering leads us to the latest crane launched by the company early this year, a new 80t lattice boom crawler that expands its SCX E-series. The model – the SCX800E – has a maximum lift capacity of 80t at a 3.2m radius, sports a maximum main boom length of 54.5m and is powered by a 140kW engine. Such machines are leading the charge for SHI in the Middle East, Aernouts says. “In this region, we are already an entrenched player in the crawler cranes segment. In fact, we are still delivering some of the cranes that were ordered last year, which was a good year for us. So far in 2018, we have sold nine lattice boom crawler cranes already, so this is also turning out to be a good year until now. There were deals that were under discussion from last year on which we shook hands this year, so obviously the name change had no impact on the decision-making process at these buyers.” And sales have not been concentrated on any particular capacity class; Sumitomo has sold cranes in its entire range, he adds. The company’s line-up starts from the 50t SCX550E crawler and goes all the way up to the 6000SLX in the 500t class. “Our sales have been well spread out throughout the GCC. Some of our crane customers are in the Duqum port project in Oman and its associated infrastructure works. Another customer has recently transferred his entire fleet from Qatar to Kuwait and is in talks with us for more units, which will be based in Kuwait’s Ruwais area,” says Aernouts. “We have also done brisk business with our smaller crawler cranes for foundation jobs. The 55t SCX550 and the 70t SCX700E are two such models which have found favour in this sector. Our best-seller in the region, however, remains the SCX2800, a 280t model which we are delivering this year to the Johnson Group. “ALE and the PVE Group are also among the large heavy lift service providers who have ordered SHI cranes. So the crawler cranes market is doing fairly well for us in the region. I think there is potential for a lot more in the Middle East market today. There are many contracts where crawler cranes are required.” And SHI cranes is now well poised to realise this potential, says Van Bakergem. “Everything remains the same. It’s the same distributorship for the region, the same level of service and support. And the same great, reliable products that have been so well received in this region over the years. Just with a new name.”

his year’s edition of Intermat, the International Exhibition for Construction and Infrastructure, taking place April 23-28 in Paris, comes at a time when spending on key infrastructure projects is expected to rise in several geographies around the globe. According to research presented by the organisers of the triennial exhibition, infrastructure projects across a range of sectors in the wider Europe, Middle East & Africa zone will total a mammoth €1,600bn for the next 30 to 40 years. The
research was unveiled late last year in the build-up to the exhibition. Produced in association with Business France, the French government’s agency for export support and inward-investment promotion, the report is the first Construction Industry Observatory, designed to facilitate stronger bonds with market players. It provides construction equipment manufacturers with strategic data on 12 countries in the EMEA zone, handpicked for their planned investment levels in infrastructure, public works and buildings. Isabelle Alfano, Intermat’s new exhibition director, says: “The Europe, Middle East & Africa zone that we cover holds a wealth of opportunities. With the Intermat Observatory, we [offer] all our partners an
up-to-date working tool to support them in their development plans in high-potential markets.” The report analyses each country’s domestic investment plans, both ongoing and for the period from 2025 to 2030. The Observatory is divided into sectors – airports, buildings, railways, mining and quarries, ports, roads, and transport. According to its findings, the six European countries studied – Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK – have €925 billion of projects slated, running up to 2030 for some, and 2050 for others. Germany tops the list with €287 billion up to 2030, followed by Italy with €223 billion and the UK with €167 billion. France is in fourth place with €139 billion, while €63 billion is

earmarked for spending in the Netherlands, and €42 billion in Belgium. The potential for business was also said to be considerable in Africa, where €307 billion of investment is planned between now and 2040. The four African countries studied include two in North Africa – Morocco and Algeria – and two in sub-Saharan Africa – Ivory Coast and Kenya. They account for €307.2 billion of investment between now and 2040. Algeria, with €183.7 billion, and Morocco, with €87.8 billion, feature the biggest investment plans to 2030. The sectors offering the highest development potential for construction firms are road and rail, followed by buildings and ports. The two Middle Eastern countries featured in the report, the UAE and Qatar, plan to invest a total of €239.3 billion between now and 2033. Qatar’s investment plans, worth €137.2 billion, exceed the UAE’s, at €102 billion. The two most promising sectors are buildings and roads. Among the region’s flagship projects, the Observatory identified several of particular interest. In the UAE, road improvements in Dubai and Abu Dhabi (€733 million) are highlighted in the report. Meanwhile, in Qatar, two projects are said to stand out – the Smart City of Lusail, costing €40 billion and with delivery due in 2020 to 2022, and a road drainage programme worth €15 billion to €20 billion. In view of these findings, the event this year is undergoing a revamping and renewal. The last edition of Intermat in 2015 saw 1,500 exhibitors from 40 countries and attracted 183,000 visitors from 167 countries. Not only are those numbers expected to
The articulated boom HA26RTJ
go up this year, but the current edition also seeks to provide the tools to learn about and opportunities to network within the industry, to enable the construction and infrastructure sectors to respond effectively to the changes and opportunities in the market. Alfano says some modifications have been made to the event with a view towards its renewal. First, she has chosen to approach the market differently by putting greater focus on the EMEA region. In order to attract more visitors from these areas, Intermat has actively promoted the show in the region with tours and outreach programmes. Another change to the show is the way in which it has been organised. With a view to creating distinct hubs of expertise, the exhibition has been divided into four different activities – Earthmoving & Demolition; Roads, Minerals & Foundations; Lifting, Handling & Transportation; and Buildings & Concrete Sector. The idea is to make it easier for visitors to navigate the exhibition, since they will be able to clearly identify the areas they are interested in. This has also fed back into the way in which the show has been promoted – a targeted approach has been taken, attending to each particular sub-sector separately, Alfano says. Both exhibitors and visitors will also benefit from a number of other resources, including lectures, round tables and the new match-maker service, which is done through an online platform where visitors and exhibitors can connect and then organise meetings on-site at the show. Another way innovation is being promoted at the show is through the introduction of thematic villages

that shed light on new technology. There will be four, each attached to one of the four hubs of expertise. The Demolition & Recycling hub will have a Demolition & Recycling village; attached to the Roads, Minerals & Foundations hub will be a Smart Road village; the Lifting, Handling & Transportation hub will include a Start-ups village; and the Buildings & Concrete Sector hub will include a Building Smart village. A day dedicated to the rental sector will also be one of the highlights of this edition of Intermat. It was felt that this was needed because the rental sector varied so much from one country to another. “In the morning we will have panel discussions with rental companies and representatives of the different rental associations in Europe, and maybe from other countries in the world. They will talk about the evolution of rental activities, looking ahead 10 years. In the afternoon, we will have business meetings, including a match-making event specific to rental,” Alfano says. Running alongside but strongly connected to Intermat will be the World of Concrete Europe exhibition. The first edition of World of Concrete Europe took place in 2015, in conjunction with the last Intermat. “At Intermat, we already have concrete equipment, but at World of Concrete we have the full line of the concrete industry. It is also very interesting because it brings new exhibitors and therefore a larger offering to visitors, as well as a lot of content because concrete is a very technical material, so there is a lot to say about it,” Alfano says.

Middle East Electricity (MEE) 2018 show in Dubai last month put into perspective the importance of power in the region and solutions for better and seamless delivery of this vital component of life. The show, which took place March 6-8 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, was remarkable from its previous editions due to a trend becoming visible of the beginnings of a shift towards
cleaner and renewable power sources in the Middle East – a region not known for its concerns about non-fossil fuel power. While the traditional generator and portable power sector was still the preponderant part of the event, conspicuous by their presence were several options for harnessing solar power. While the Middle East Solar exhibition has run concurrently with the MEE for a few years now, it has always been s side show while the main interest remained with the big manufacturers at the MEE. This time, however, some of those main manufacturers at MEE also had on display solar
generators and other such options in their stands. In attendance were manufacturers and service providers from the power generation and engine sector from around the globe, led by such global brands as Perkins, Doosan Portable Power, Volvo Penta, FPT Industrial, Atlas Copco and Cummins, as well as local and regional heavyweights such as Jubaili Bros and Teksan. Turkish heavyweight Teksan, which has already etched its name on the region’s power generation and portable power sector with a track record of successful projects going back several years, showcased its

generator sets and lighting towers at the event. Deniz Saglam, marketing communications manager said Teksan is a young and dynamic brand but despite being relatively new, it has been able to make a mark in the market, especially in the Middle East and Africa. “We have seen a steady upward trend in terms of sales and market penetration. We have also been able to establish some fruitful partnerships in the GCC region, which is one of the reasons that we are doing well enough in this region to come and participate in this event. In co-operation with our partners, we are looking forward to growing stronger in the GCC.”
Teksan uses engines from various brands in its generators and Saglam says the reason behind that is to serve customer needs and preferences. “The needs and demands from customers always vary and change. We believe that If you deliver only one kind of solution you can solve only one kind of problem. At Teksan we proceed in a holistic way. We try to embrace all the needs and demands of our customers, so we have to innovate and provide various alternatives to answer the needs that vary from, let’s say zero to 10 megawatts. So, we are flexible in using different engines and different alternators in order to
provide tailored solutions for our customers. “We dont call ourselves a genset manufacturer. Instead we see ourslves as ‘benefit creators’. At Teksan, we are like tailors. We start everything by understanding the customers’ and projects’ needs. Then we customise a solution that meets the requirements of the particular project or application. We try to exceed our customer expectation with the solutions we deliver. But delivery is only a beginning in a way for us. We provide constant training to our customers and partners, and we make sure to be close to them with our after-sales and service teams. This is the reason our gensets are running in more than 120 countries around the world.” Meanwhile, local giant Jubaili Bros marked 40 years in the power sector last year by adding a new model to its range that taps into alternative power courses. Jubaili’s solar power systems comprose photovoltaic cells connected to a charge controller and solar string invertor for both on-grid and offgrid applications. The company said that the solar systems it supplies are sourced from world-renowned solar coomponent makers and all installations are covered under a warranty that lasts from 10 to 25 years depending upon components chosen. “Our solar systems have received great interest and we’ve won various projects to install the systems in schools and factories in the territories we serve,” said Jad Jubaili, business development manager, Jubaili Bros. Global major Perkins unveiled its all-new 7l 1206 engine at the show. The engine leverages the latest technology to draw maximum power from a smaller package and was part of a triple launch of new engines to deliver a significant uplift in power density to the booming Electric Power (EP) sector. “For OEMs, improved power density is a critical customer requirement,” said product marketing manager (electric power) Karan Ohri. “Each of our new engines delivers the same or better performance as engines that were historically much larger and heavier.” The 1206, for example, has 20% improved power density and is 22% lighter than the existing 8.8l 1506 platform and it produces 200-275 kVA; customers would have needed the 1506 for that type of power until now. From a smaller package size, the same power is delivered with a positive and direct impact on the bottom line of EP customers. New technology on the engine includes twin series turbocharging, which provides improved engine response. A higher-pressure fuel system gives precise control of fuelling, which delivers improved performance across the board. High specification core engine components also maximise durability while delivering class-leading power output and performance. Atlas Copco unveiled the latest innovations from its expansive power generation portfolio at Middle East Electricity. This included a containerised, fuelsaving TwinPower concept for Modular Power Plant

cuMMins in The powerband Cummins has introduced its new C450 D5 genset model, part of the new QSG12 diesel engine series for commercial and industrial applications, at Middle East Electricity 2018. The series is available from 400-450kVA at 50Hz and from 350-400kW at 60Hz. The C450 D5 model is powered by a Cummins four cycle, inline, six-cylinder dual speed diesel engine. The global engines and power products major said the new product has an improved design and an advanced combustion system, enabling it to offer more power for less space by delivering a much higher power density and a more reliable power solution. The C450 D5 can run parallel with both other gensets and grids to fit diverse job-site requirements. Additional features include extended service intervals of 500 hours and unaided cold start capability at 12°C. “Our new product model is based on the QSG12 engine series, offering a much higher power density. This means that we now have a true prime-power capability to offer our customers, based on a fueloptimised variant. The new product model includes many design and performance improvements and it is a definitive step forward for us,” said Cummins’ Alok Joshi.
“The needs and demands from customers always vary. We are flexible in using different engines and different alternators in order to provide tailored solutions for our customers” (MPP) applications and energy-efficient electric LED light towers from the HiLight range, and a new variable speed generator (VSG) with superior lowload performance, which it called “game-changing”. The theme of Atlas Copco’s indoor and outdoor booths was ‘Powering the Future’, and visitors also participated in some Virtual Reality experiences. Adrian Ridge, president of the Atlas Copco Power and Flow division said: “Middle East Electricity was a fantastic forum to meet with the major players in the region’s power generation industry. We shared our vision with both new and existing customers about how Atlas Copco is ‘Powering the Future’ through innovations such as the new QAS VSG generator, TwinPower concept and its latest evolution in light tower technologies. “Atlas Copco’s QAS 35 VSG represents a game changer in terms of operational savings, performance and reliability. Its superior low-load performance, which features automatic variable speed control from 800 to 2550rpm and a built-in Power Management System (PMS), enables fuel consumption levels to be
reduced by up to 40% against comparable models.” The QAC 1450 TwinPower generator unveiled by Atlas Copco is a 20ft ISO containerised unit housing two compact 725 kVA generators, powered by V16 Scania engines and double bearing alternators. This configuration, with its fast-paralleling system, allows the two generators to work independently or in parallel with each other. Also on display was the HiLight V3+ and HiLight P2+ electric light towers LED machines that can be plugged into any power source, including auxiliary power, directly into the grid, or a portable generator. Another global major, Cummins, introduced a new genset at the event, the C450 D5 model and also showcased its new 9.5l G-Drive Coolpac series. Displayed in the newly-released Cummins black colour, the 6LTAA9.5-G1 G-Drive Coolpac model is available at 350kVA. According to Alok Joshi, Cummins’ director of Power Generation Business in Africa & Middle East region, with a 24-valve and a larger flow injector design, this new model delivers one of the highest power-to-weight ratio in its class.

rowing hunger for new infrastructure machinery and technology in the GCC attracted industry leaders to The Big 5 Heavy 2018, at the Dubai World Trade Centre. With 300 exhibitors from over 30 countries the event was the largest heavy construction show in the Middle East and offered construction professionals three days of business, networking, and education last month. Over 40 complimentary workshops at The Big 5 Heavy were curated by trusted industry experts such as Omar Essam Barakat from The Chartered Institute of Building, who captured the GCC infrastructure outlook: “If you are actually in the market, you know that with Expo 2020 and Vision 2030 the deadline is just the beginning of a very big plan,” said Barakat. He reinforced that “government visions in this case are tools for setting the standard of continuing industry and I can confirm that we are bidding for many projects to come after the deadlines”. With expertise in over 60 countries, Adriaan De Kok, area business manager for Chevron Lubricants and parent company for Caltex, said that “given the volume of projects being planned and executed in the GCC region, we do expect the construction and infrastructure industry to pick-up at a fast pace and to grow in 2018”. “The broader strategic initiatives announced by governments across the region will steer economic growth which in turn becomes a key driver for the construction industry,” he added. Confirming a positive trend, the first deal made on-site was between Saudi-based Sarmix, and Austrian Dorner Electronic represented in the region by Deewan Equipment, for a complete automation
system to be used at Sarmix ready-mix factories. In response to market growth, Dubai Municipality Building Department attended the event to rollout their new fast-track Branch Licensing initiative which offers a one-day commercial licence process. “Traditionally, the branch licensing process would take some time, but by making it more convenient in line with Smart Dubai innovation we hope to welcome more skilled and forward thinking professionals to the flourishing region,” said Maryam Hassan Ahli, senior consultants and contractors prequalification engineer at Dubai Municipality Building Department. Event director for The Big 5 Heavy, Richard Pavitt commented on the successful launch of the show: “We are delighted to see so many market leaders from around the world excited to attend a dedicated show for the heavy machinery and infrastructure industries. The atmosphere here is a true reflection of the promise that growing GCC construction opportunities present.” On display at the event were tower cranes, crushers, mega tyres and more on display across four product sectors: Middle East Concrete, PMV Live, Foundations & Geotechnical, and Mining & Quarrying. As a meeting point for the construction market not only in the UAE but in the entire GCC, one of the biggest names that the event attracted was Linden Comansa. Representing the Spanish tower crane specialist was Aremates, its in the UAE, which promoted its services of rental, sale, assembly and maintenance of tower cranes in the event’s outdoor area. On display was the 12t tower crane model 16CM260. Thanks to its 12t of maximum load and a maximum reach of 70m, this flat-top crane meets the requirements that are currently most demanded by the construction market in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Oman, said a representative of Aremates. For the exhibition visitors to closely see the design of the 16CM260 without cat-head and Linden Comansa’s exclusive double trolley system, the crane was displayed

According to officials at the stand, Linden Comansa’s participation in the Big 5 Heavy was in line with its plans to continue its expansion in the GCC tower crane market, which the manufacturer describes as booming. Another tower crane specialist from Europe, Raimondi, also took the opportunity to exhibit in the Middle East for the first time ever. The company’s stand at the show saw its top management from Italy coming in to meet customers and visitors. Wael Hasan, Middle East commercial manager, Raimondi Cranes, said: “We were pleased to welcome our senior management from our Italian headquarters for the Big 5 Heavy in Dubai. The company was present in full force with all its arms working in the region, which included the concrete products division, the tower crane division and the mobile crane division. Ali Kasem, regional sales manager, Concrete Equipment Division, Liebherr Middle East, said the main aim for his division at the show was to publicise the new Liebherr 1304 concrete mixer, introduced in the region recently. The 12 cubic metre model, built on the new Mercedes Arocs truck chassis, provides more internal volume on the same footprint and exterior dimensions to control spillage, backflow and viscosity of the concrete being transported. “The Big 5 is well known in the region and is an iconic exhibition in the construction sector, and this year separating the heavy equipment into a standalone show is really a good idea. It’s good for us as we know that whoever is coming here is coming to look at heavy equipment, so we are getting more targeted exposure. We met several people at the event and I’m

happy that we have a few potential leads,” said Kasem. “People are still not familiar with our new mixer and we used the event to educate them about the model. The market has moved to the 12 cubic metre models, and when we tell customers that the name of our new model is 1304, they ask whether they can fill 13 cubic metres, whereas the model is still a 12 cubic metre mixer but has more water volume. “A larger water volume helps the concrete to be more fluid in the mixer, but that increases the risk of spillage while driving. So, we increased the water volume so that users can fill high-flow concrete without the risk of spillage on the road. Explaining this concept to visitors was one of our main focuses at the show.” Andri Leith, sales manager for Liebherr crane products, was also appreciative of the way the event drew visitors who were relevant to the sector. “We had a lot of feedback coming through from customers at the show. Obviously, being the very first stand-alone exhibition of its kind in the region, it still has some way to go in future. But there was considerable interest in our crane products and we will need to build on the interest generated to see what the future holds. We were able to leverage the Big 5 Heavy platform to tell our customers about our recent successes and position ourselves as a partner of choice for their crane needs.” Another big name at the show was the ZoomlionCifa combine. The Chinese company, which owns
Italy’s concrete specialist Cifa, displayed concrete pumps and mixers at the event. Wajih Eit, general manager, Zoomlion Gulf, said new management decisions at the Chinese company have led to greater integration of the two entities, which now have a central point of control in Zoomlion’s Jebel Ali offices in Dubai. “I think the Big 5 Heavy is a good idea. The Big 5 itself is a more general show for the construction industry, but having a separate event for the heavy equipment sector is a positive development. There was a good influx of people to our stand. We were only participating as Cifa with our concrete equipment but going forward we could participate in a bigger way in future editions of the show with other Zoomlion product lines. “The show was the perfect place to tell our customers about new developments at Cifa and present our team. We are now closer to Cifa customers in the region with a branch under the Zoomlion group - Zoomlion Gulf, which I’m in charge of. Our group presence in Jebel Ali includes a 10,000sqm yard and hub for spare parts. The stock includes both Zoomlion and Cifa equipment and spare parts. Zoomlion Gulf will be the regional distributor for Cifa spare parts in the GCC region. “The best place to inform the industry about this consolidation is a trade show, and the Big 5 Heavy has been invaluable in reaching out to our existing and prospective customers.”

New triaNgular jib desigN reduces wiNd impact aNd improves packagiNg Italian tower crane specialist Raimondi Cranes SpA has announced its new LR330 luffing jib model, which uses a transformative approach to heavy lifting technology, according to the company. Showcased earlier to Raimondi’s exclusive agent network ahead of wider release, the LR330 luffing jib crane officially began shipping last month to fulfil agent presell orders, and is now available for wider purchase. “The LR330 is productive, durable, strong and efficient. As the flagship crane of the new luffing range, we have incorporated a breakthrough equilateral triangular jib design to enhance several different aspects of the machine. Structurally optimised, this innovative layout allows for improved packaging and transportation, simplifies the construction phase and reduces wind
impact on the jib, thereby decreasing the out of service radius,” says Domenico Ciano, technical director, Raimondi Cranes. He added that working at height has also been factored in with the crane’s simplified installation and dismantling procedures. The LR330 has a maximum jib length of 60m and a maximum capacity of 18t, with two falls and four falls configurations. At the maximum radius, it can lift 3.3t in Ultra-lift mode. Six different jib length configurations, from 30-60m, satisfy all needs in terms of specific job-site configurations. The LR330 may be equipped with three different hoisting winches: standard installed power of 80kW or the two falls configuration with the more powerful 110kW, while the four falls configuration has an installed power of 80kW. The rope capacities are 650m, 1,000m and 980m, and all winches can be equipped with a secondary emergency brake. SPECIFICATIONS

Goodyear’s new KMAX EXTREME is a truck tyre line specifically engineered for use in conditions of extreme heat. The new line, which offers improved wear, greater durability and lower operating costs, comprises the KMAX S EXTREME steer tyre, the KMAX D EXTREME drive tyre and the KMAX T EXTREME trailer tyre. According to Goodyear, the tyres have been designed for trucks operating long distances in multiple loading conditions that are primarily running on roads where long-term resistance to heat is the main performance factor, such as in the Middle East. The main benefits the tyres offer are regular wear to maximise life and lower operating costs, as well as greater durability. Specially designed tread patterns and compounds ensure regular wear and resistance to abrasion in hot conditions, and the carcasses are also designed to cope with long lifecycles in such conditions. “The New Goodyear KMAX EXTREME truck tyres have been developed for hot running conditions such as experienced in the GCC countries,” said Rupert Kohaupt, sales director, Truck Tyres, Emerging Markets, Goodyear EMEA. “These conditions increase wear and reduce durability in standard tyres, so the new tyres have been engineered to not only overcome these issues but also to save fuel and reduce operating costs.” The tyres feature tough carcasses with a construction that gives maximum performance and retreadability with excellent durability and reduced weight, says Goodyear. The tread compounds have also been specially developed for cool running, to ensure extended mileage under high temperatures.

BoBcat Renews compact excavatoR RanGe Why get it? New techNology with stability, operator comfort aNd lower traNsport weight, amoNg other improvemeNts Bobcat’s upcoming new-generation 2-4t compact excavators have new levels of operator comfort, enhanced controllability and smoothness of all working functions, complemented by new design features and styling. The 2-3t models in the range – the E26, E27z and E27, with operating weights of 2.5t, 2.7t and 2.6t respectively – all offer best-in-class stability and comply with weight limits for easy trailering. The main focus has been on operator comfort, with the new machines incorporating many innovative features and offering an enhanced level of quality and robustness, said Bobcat. Bobcat has also developed the new E34 and E35z to reinforce its product offering in the 3-4t category of compact excavators. The company will release more information on these new machines at Intermat later in the month. Jaroslav Fiser, product line director for Bobcat Mini-Excavators in EMEA, said: “Our engineers and product experts have worked closely together with our sales force and
selected European dealers to ensure the new products meet the specific requirements of the very demanding customer base. We are very much looking forward to unveiling our new machines at Intermat in Paris.” The new-generation version of the E26 excavator has a transport weight reduced by around 40kg, increased over-the-side lifting capacity and a brand new robust work group with an innovative cylinderinside-boom (CIB) feature. The E26 is optimised for specific rental industry needs and has greater operator comfort with features preferred by owner-operators. The new E27z model is a Zero House Swing (ZHS) machine, even with the optional counterweight, and offers higher 360-degree stability and a lower weight for easier transportation. With an optional long arm and deluxe cab, the E27z offers the digging output and operator comfort of much larger excavators, says the manufacturer. The new conventional swing E27 model introduces a unique in-class combination of stability, digging performance and breakout forces together with a transport weight that is still below the weight limits for appropriate trailers. Even with the optional heavy counterweight, the E27 offers just
280mm of tail overhang, which allows the machine to be operated in confined spaces. As well as arm-mounted auxiliaries on the workgroup, Bobcat offers Geith and Lehnhoff hydraulic coupler and tilt coupler options. A bucket diverter valve kit is also available to power a clam shell bucket attachment. Other options include LED lights and an easy-to-install beacon. For safer loading and transport, four more tie-down points have been added as standard on the upper structure. The new excavators offer good access for daily maintenance and service. The bodyshell uses metal covers, which can be repaired in the case of accidental damage. There is also easy access to upper structure components thanks to the two-piece floor mat and easy-to-remove floor covers. SPECIFICATIONS

The Japanese equipment-maker said its new releases comprise the CKE3000G for Europe, which has a 300t at 5.5m radius, and the 330 US ton for North America. There is also the 300t standard model for global release, which offers an increased 350t capacity in super heavy lift (SHL) specification. The standard global model has an EU Stage IIIA/US Tier 3 compliant engine, with the European model powered by an EU Stage IV engine and the North American one by a US Tier 4 Final unit. Compared to its 250t CKE2500G-2 model, Kobelco said the new cranes can lift 40% more weight in standard specification and 60% more in the luffer variant. The models compare favourably to cranes in the 400-500t class when used in the SHL configuration. Also, to make it easier to transport the cranes, the width of all components has been kept at less than 3m. Describing the new models as all-rounders – multi-purpose cranes for handling all sorts of applications, loads and job-sites – Kobelco said its attachments include three jibs: fixed, heavy fixed and luffing. A super heavy lift configuration is also available for heavier lifts, which also includes a luffing jib. Kobelco says the cabin is designed for an operator-friendly environment keeping comfort, ease of operation and safety in mind. The extra-wide windows and tilt mechanism of the cabin offer excellent visibility.

If you rent AWP equipment, choose a rental company with a reputation for safety and meeting more than just the minimum required standards. For instance, having decals on your equipment verifying you have documentation for required inspections can be crucial to ensuring employee safety.

To minimise breakdowns and worker injuries, AWP operators need a comprehensive understanding of how the equipment works, as well as how to operate it correctly and safely. t’s not an imposing bulldozer or excavator, or a tower crane that dominates the skyline at a jobsite but the aerial work platform (AWP) has an importance that belies its size and presence. At a certain stage in the construction process the AWP assumes the greatest importance, whether it’s when the cladding is to be put on or the lights and other fixtures to be installed. And the AWP stays back as the most invaluable tool in maintenance once the construction is finished and the building is built, long after all the other machines have left. The AWP is also indispensable to fields such as oil & gas, which relies heavily on the machines for maintenance. This is one of the areas besides construction where global brands such as Haulotte, Genie, JLG and others have made a fortune in the Middle East. Among the big-ticket projects that are continuing in the region, French powered access specialist Haulotte has cornered some prestigious customers. Haulotte work platforms helped to build the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi and the King AbdulAziz International Airport in Jeddah. When it comes to maintenance the brand has an important and high-visibility project in its kitty – the upkeep of the Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. With its fleet engaged in the maintenance of Islam’s holiest site, Haulotte counts this as a feather in its cap, says Arthur Danelian, managing director of Haulotte Middle East. Saudi Aramco’s new Jazan Refinery and Terminal Project in Saudi Arabia is the latest project where Haulotte has supplied its articulated and telescopic big booms. The models used the most are the HA41PX-NT and HA41RTJ PRO articulated boom lifts and the telescopic boom lift HT43RTJ PRO. The HA41 models have an outreach of 19.80m and Haulotte claims the best lifting speed in the market with less than 40 seconds, which reduces time and increases productivity. The recently launched HT28RTJ PRO, equipped with the innovative STOP Emission System, is also working on the site. This system automatically puts the machine in stand-by after an extended period of inactivity. “These telescopic booms offer unparalleled flexibility and precision, giving users greater confidence and letting them reach the desired work area quickly and safely,” says Danelian. As per Saudi Aramco’s request, all the machines were equipped with a secondary guarding system: the Haulotte ACTIV’ Shield Bar 2.0 which offers additional protection, shielding users from any risk of crushing
without compromising productivity and preserves the best working envelope. Haulotte’s system alerts the operator to potential entrapment situations. It features a ‘Safety Gap’ which can protect the operator from full entrapment and potentially allow them to get out of danger. Following the alert, only reverse/lowering movements are permitted, allowing the possibly panicked operator to get out of trouble without making the situation worse. And, after being triggered, the system is easy to reset and reactivate from the basket which means there is no machine downtime. This evolution guarantees better ergonomics, enhanced robustness and simpler system, perfectly integrated into the upper control box cover. Among Haulotte’s latest models is the HA26 RTJ Pro articulated boom. The HA26 range has been designed to meet the expectations of operators in terms of performance and ensure a cost-effective investment for rental companies, says Haulotte. The model comes with several safety features. Loading and unloading it on a truck is made safer and simpler with a ultra-high performance lighting system, the ACTIV’Lighting System-Safe Load. Located at several points around the machine, this system illuminates controls and the area around the boom. Workers are also protected from risk of crushing with the Haulotte ACTIV’Shield Bar 2.0, which provides a “safety gap”. The machine combines a working height of 26.4m, an up-and-over clearance of 9.3m and a 17.5m horizontal outreach to work in hardto-reach areas and improve productivity. It also has and optional Dual Load Capacity feature with a 250kg/350kg dual load capacity. In 350kg mode, the platform can accommodate an extra 40% of equipment by weight. Another manufacturer involved in a project of significance in the region is Genie, the powered access arm of Terex. Genie recently delivered three Z-60/37 DC articulating boom lifts to Dubai Parks and Resorts (DPP), one of the prime leisure destinations operators in the region. The new all-electric lifts are ideal for maintenance work at heights and are designed to be suitable for such leisure facilities, where a lot of indoor maintenance work has to be carried out, which means that a quiet and emission-free machine is the only way to go. And, according to Nishad Abdulla, assistant fleet manager, DPP, the machines are proving their utility. The facility would have otherwise needed to spend more money on separate diesel and electric boom lifts for outdoor and indoor maintenance had the Z-60/37 DC model not been suitable for both purposes. “Thanks to its excellent range of motion,

versatile, quiet, clean performance and fourwheel drive abilities, this new Genie model is an excellent and cost-effective alternative to separate diesel- and electric-powered units. For us, the Z-60/37DC boom definitely ticks all the right boxes,” says Abdulla. Apart from its performance and costutility, Genie itself puts safety as one of the top reasons why its products are favoured in the market. In the second quarter of this year, the company introduced a new safety feature recently – the Lift Guard Contact Alarm System – which is an electronic secondary guarding system that sounds an alarm if it detects an emergency in which the operator may need help. The alarm comes as standard on most new Genie S telescopic lifts and Z articulated lifts. It can also be installed as an after-market kit within half-an-hour and is suitable for retrofitting on units manufactured from 2003 onwards. Sharbel Kordahi, sales director for Genie Aerial Work Platforms, Middle East, South of Africa and Russia, says: “Operator safety is a paramount concern for Genie, and we have developed the new Genie Lift Guard Contact Alarm, part of the Genie line of Lift Guard secondary operator protection accessories, with this goal in mind.” Another goal for Genie is to offer top-notch after-sales service, and for this it works in close cooperation with its dealers and partners in the region, such as Al Mahroos, its UAE dealer and fully-authorised service centre under the Genie Service Solutions umbrella.

Where service is concerned, JLG is also on its game. The brand has enjoyed a long presence in the Middle East, having appointed its first dealer in the region back in the early 1980s. More recently, in 2008, it came into the region with greater force by establishing its own sales and service operation in the UAE. Ian Hume, JLG’s sales difrector for emerging markets, says: “We deliver unsurpassed training and service, because we have a responsibility to be more than a manufacturing company. We are a partner in our customers’ success. Since we set up shop here in 2008, the growth has been in the large boom segment and we deliver the powerful, versatile equipment needed.” He adds that JLG’s popular offering is the RS series, which is targeted at rental operators with its low acquisition cost. It is simple to operate and easy to service. Also popular in JLG’s stable is the self-propelled Ultra Boom, which is one of the largest of its kind in the sector. As a self-propelled boom it is extending the range of jobs that can be done with a machine of its kind, owing to its smaller footprint which allows it to be used in confined spaces. It also enjoys a lower price point when compared to equivalent truckmounted booms, Hume adds. The newest entrant to the AWP sector is British giant JCB. Leveraging its brand equity in the telehandler and other segments, JCB entered the AWP market last year with nine electric scissor lift models and announced a new JCB Access division. It plans to have
27 models in its line up across the scissor lift, articulated boom and telescopic boom categories, comprising nine electric and three diesel scissor lifts from 4.6m to 13.8m, five articulating booms from 14.9m to 24.6m, and ten 20.6-41.6m diesel telescopic booms. And now, just a year after entering the sector, JCB has notched up an industry first with the launch of a range of electric scissor lifts powered by lithium ion batteries. The five new models are the S1530E, S1930E, S2032E, S2646E and the S2646E, offering working heights of 6.6m to 10.1m. Dutch rental company Hoogwerkt has already placed an order for 420 of the new models. Lithium ion batteries offer up to 40% longer operation and a 50% cut in recharging times says Jonathan Garnham, MD, JCB Access. “We are delighted to be offering innovative new solutions to the powered access industry so early into JCB’s entry into the sector. Lithium ion powered scissor lifts will offer real benefits to our customers around the world, particularly in significantly reducing total cost of ownership,” he adds. With Lithium ion batteries recharging times are reduced by up to 50%, improving utilisation on site. Plus, unlike lead acid batteries, lithium ion batteries can be left in a low state of charge without damaging the cells. JCB’s lithium ion powered machines come with a Smartphone app with wireless connectivity for real-time condition checks of the batteries, which have up to 2,000 recharge cycles, four times as many as lead acid batteries.

either the heat and dust of the Middle East nor the very hard rock in the region can stop MB Crusher equipment from working. In an area outside Jeddah in the Hejaz region, the secondlargest city in Saudi Arabia, MB’s BF135.8 crusher bucket and the MB-R900 drum cutter are working incessantly, day and night, to recover and process many cubic metres of local material. Fitted to a Doosan 420LCV excavator, the BF135.8 recovers aggregates which will then be used for the creating of roadbeds. Together with the MB Crusher ecocrusher, one of the latest innovations from the company is also being used: the MBR900 drum cutter, the largest model in the range, the only cutter in the world to be fitted with the Direct Drive Twin Motor System, a patented system which allows differentiated distribution of power to the two cutting heads. Once cut, material can be processed with the crusher bucket in order to obtain the ideal size for the creation of roadbeds, or to fill digs. It fits perfectly into the scope of the Vision 2030 plan, a true transformation project which will support the Kingdom for the next few years, placing focus on increasing the efficiency of the government, promoting economic growth, expanding the private sector and creating job opportunities.

45 MB Crusher’s mobile crushing buckets can be used with any excavator to crush material directly onsite, saving time and money, as well as providing a greener solution.
“Time is a critical factor for us, which means that having a machine like the MB crusher bucket on-site is really helpful, considering the amount of material we need to process... It also requires very low amounts of water, which makes it easy to work with the excavators we have on-site”
“Innovation combined with economic and environmental sustainability – that is the philospphy behind MB Crusher products, the pioneer of the revolution of crushing methods,” says Najmedine Sahraoui, deputy GM of MB Crusher in the Middle East. “The Jeddah project is an ambitious one which will change the face of the country. It is a project that requires cutting-edge machinery, constructed to diversify work and provide added value to the companies that use it. MB Crusher products are an ideal fit in this situation, created to make a difference in every work-site and transform waste from works into earnings.” Innovative products such as those made by MB Crusher can also make a difference in specific projects such as the National Project Management Organisation (NPMO, known as Mashroat), which will support Saudi government agencies in delivering complex infrastructure projects in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan to modernise the Kingdom’s administration. “The new contract builds on Amercian constractor Bechtel’s experience in assisting the Royal Commission of Jubail and Yanbu in the development and expansion of the Jubail and Ras Al Khair industrial cities. Bechtel has worked on significant infrastructure projects in Saudi Arabia, including the King Fahd and King Khalid airports and the Ras Al Khair aluminium smelter, and MB Crusher products have been a constant presence at their worksites,” says Sahraoui. Over in Qatar, it is over 60,000 cubic metres of limestone that the MB Crusher bucket is crushing. The BF90.3 crusher bucket has been working day and night in one of the capital’s largest sites in Barwa City in Doha. This is the second stage of the construction of Oryx International School, an Orbital Education Group school for Qatar Airways employees’ children. The construction of the Oryx International School in Doha consists of two stages. The first stage, Oryx Minor, was completed in November 2016, when the first buildings were opened. Today, the school is operational. The second stage, Oryx Major, started in June 2017 and is planned to be completed next month. It involves the construction of 41,000sqm of campus and a three-floor building with new classrooms, laboratories and gyms for over 2,000 students. This means it is an important project, involving large companies and a number of businesses, which will provide students with high-quality education in a safe and well-equipped environment. “The BF90.3 crusher bucket was purchased by Boom General Contractors, a large

construction company from Qatar that is following the project. BF90.3 is working to recycle thousands of cubic metres of inert waste materials from the excavations for the foundations and the underground car park,” says Sahraoui. Mounted on a Volvo EC240B excavator, the BF90.3 crushes the material with different sizes – to change the resulting soil texture, thickness can be added to or removed from the MB crusher in just a few minutes. The crushed rock will be reused to fill on-site excavations and as subgrade for the roads within the school. “We chose the MB crusher bucket because we can crush the material directly on-site without having to bring a large crushing station,” points out Pier Matter, project manager at Boom General Contractors. “This saves us transport costs for other machinery, as the crusher bucket is carried together with the excavator. Once it is on-site, it can be assembled very quickly and we are ready to work in a few minutes. It is also easy to use. From the excavator cab, the operator picks up the material with the crusher bucket and crushes it on the spot.” “Time is a critical factor for us, which means that having a machine like the MB crusher bucket on-site is really helpful, considering the amount of material we need to process. The crusher bucket does
not need special maintenance in addition to basic maintenance. It also requires very low amounts of water, which makes it easy to work with the other excavators we have on-site.” The first crusher bucket to ever be placed on the market, today BF90.3 has reached its fourth series. It has become more productive – it can yield up to 42 cubic metres per hour depending on the processed material – while its size has been reduced and it is even more compact. Series 4 can yield materials of different size – 15 to 140 mm. Like all MB Crusher products, it is fully manufactured in Italy and is Hardox-in-my-Body certified. This means it is manufactured with first-class wear-resistant heavy-duty materials. These successes in the Middle East mean the MB Crusher brand is not only well-known in the region, but also well-respected. With the combination of being well-respected in its field and having numerous projects in the region that can use MB Crusher products, attending The Big 5 Heavy in Dubai, the region’s first stand-alone show for the construction machinery sector, was a nobrainer for the Italian manufacturer. According to Sahraoui, MB Crusher’s presense at The Big 5 Heavy was all about showcasing the brand new series of crusher bucket BF 90.3, screening bucket MB-S18 plus drum cutter MB-R900, all ideal for infrastructure projects.
47 “Innovation combined with economic and environmental sustainability – that is the philospphy behind MB Crusher products, the pioneer of the revolution of crushing methods”
MB’s market is highly correlated to overall infrastructure development. The GCC infrastructure market has an estimated value of over $400bn, and there are currently 1,246 ongoing projects in different stages of the construction lifecycle; for these reasons, The Big 5 Heavy is an event where MB Crusher’s presence was a certainty. According to Sahraoui, with MB crushing and screening buckets, contractors have the advantage of crushing and screening the existing materials on-site, eliminating the need to load demolished material onto trucks or dumpers and take it to a waste dump, and also saving money over buying new materials. For road construction works, it’s possible to crush the material and reuse it directly on site as GSB, drainage filling and trench filling. MB’s attachments use the hydraulic system on excavators, skid loaders and backhoes, allowing the flexibility to work in tight areas, difficult access locations, steep slopes and urban areas. Contractors will be able to move their plant wherever they need it to go, reuse materials immediately at the job site and provide an environmentally friendly option in recycling waste materials. “The Middle East Market is a dynamic and growing market. There are many ongoing and future projects where MB attachments are the solution,” says Sahraoui.
