Information Security (IS) has been in the center of attention last few years and many of legislations across the world have in the recent times started focusing on the ‘corporate governance’ responsibilities (read as ‘board or top level’). Even the Companies Act 2013 has both directly and indirectly increased the ‘strategic’ responsibility. The amended Information Technology Act, 2000 also has substantially increased the responsibilities at organizational and executive levels. The statutory importance on the one side, let us look at the way the commercial and political world is moving in the recent times. The story of ‘Target’ chain of stores in the recent times in the US has brought about a major revolution in the information security thinking. Target had all the classical security measures in place, with well-trained executives. But in spite of all that there was a major security breach. Several thousands of clients’ credit card information was breached. The story they tell is of an alert system, installed to protect the bond between retailer and customer, that worked beautifully. But then, Target stood by as 40 million credit card numbers and 70 million addresses, phone numbers, and other pieces of personal information gushed out of its mainframes!
In the political world, the Paris attacks shocked the world, the war is overwhelmingly coming into our homes and the intelligence experts fear that this is just the beginning. The ISIS knows how to spread his message, none of the other terror outfits in the past were able to organize themselves to make such an effective propaganda. Each media is masterfully handled by terrorists - social networks, instant messaging apps, gaming platforms and forums hidden in the darknet. So we are moving from just cyber-attacks to cyber terrorism!

Big data is a term that refers to data sets or combination of data sets whose size (volume), complexity (variability), and rate of growth (velocity) make them difficult to be captured, managed, processed or analyzed. The Data sets are so large and complex that they are impractical to be managed with traditional software tools.
When big data is effectively and efficiently captured, processed and analyzed, organizations are able to gain a more complete understanding of their business, customers, products, competitors, etc. which can lead to efficiency improvements, increased sales, lower costs, better customer service, and/or improved products and services. For example, retailers can track user web clicks to identify behavioral trends that improve campaigns, pricing and stock. Utilities can capture household energy usage levels to predict outages and to incent more efficient energy consumption. Governments and even Google can detect and track the emergence of disease outbreaks via social media signals. Oil and gas companies can take the output of sensors in their drilling equipment to make more efficient and safer drilling decisions.
Understanding and Utilizing Big Data – It is a daunting task for most industries to understand the data that is available to be used, and determining the best use of data based on the industry, strategy, and tactics. These analysis need to be performed on an continuous basis as the data landscape changes at an ever-increasing rate
