WELCOME

JAN – MAR 2017 AT CONTACT

Matt Fenton © Joel Chester Fildes

Spring kicks off with a new Contact co-production with our long-time collaborators 20 Stories High. ‘I told my Mum I was going on an R.E. trip…’ is a brilliantly warm, funny and frank show that continues our commitment to producing new work with a focus on contemporary social issues.

A season filled with innovative and provocative performance, February sees the triumphant return of Queer Contact Festival, now in its ninth year, and a welcome visit from our partners Tamasha. In March, SICK! Festival takes over Contact and venues across the city with a remarkable international programme. Innovation doesn’t stop at the shows: we’re really excited to be introducing print at home ticketing this season. Whether you book online, by phone or in person, your ticket will be emailed to you — with a unique barcode you can print off or display on your mobile. So, with no more waiting for tickets at the Box Office, you’ll have more time to spend in the Contact Lounge. We’ll see you there! Matt Fenton, Artistic Director/Chief Executive

The result is a remarkable, diverse and exciting programme for everyone — whatever your age. Did you know? • Contact

is a creative space for young people aged 13 – 30, providing workshops and opportunities, mostly for free (see pages 16 – 17).

• Contact

is a charity dependent on our valued Funders, Trusts and Foundations, and the generosity of individual donors. To find out more about how you can support our work, please contact: emmawigley@contactmcr.com I 0161 274 0657.

'I TOLD MY MUM I WAS GOING ON AN R.E. TRIP…' Written and directed by Julia Samuels.

BSL

performance Sat 4 Feb, 7.30pm

With 1 in 3 women having had an abortion ‘I told my Mum I was going on an R.E. trip…’ explores what seems to be one of society's last taboos. A multi-talented young female ensemble use verbatim voices, live music, beats and rhyme to portray the stories of real women who’ve experienced pregnancy and abortion. This funny, frank, and moving new play is about as far from a worthy sexual health lecture as is imaginable. Supported by the Wellcome Trust and Arts Council England.

THEATRECLUB: THE GAME The Game by THEATREclub, explores the act of buying sex and the subculture of prostitution; its rules, its language and its power structures. It is a play that’s also a real-life game, with levels and consequences. Five men from Manchester will volunteer, they have never played ‘The Game’ before. They’ve no idea what they’re about to do, they won’t be given a script. They are doing this to be part of an event that calls us all to consider, to think and to review. DANIEL HELLMANN: TRAUMBOY Daniel is a sex worker. In the solo performance Traumboy he reports on his experiences as a male prostitute. ON THE COUCH Contact will host two On The Couch public discussions, bringing together voices from the arts, academics, community groups and people personally affected by the issues addressed. See contactmcr.com for further details. Wed 8 Mar, 5pm. £3.

Badges chosen / Labels given In the first of our On The Couch discussions, we ask how much are we are defined by our labels. We all carry these labels of identity: Religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, disability. Some badges we choose: The bands we like, football teams we support, quite literally, the labels we wear? We all struggle to define our place in the world, at times proudly claiming a particular identity, at other times distancing ourselves from an imposed label.

Wed 8 Mar & Fri 24 Mar. Locations tbc.

HIRAETH

Hiraeth is a Welsh word for which there is no direct English translation. It is defined as homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed. It is a mix of longing, yearning, nostalgia, wistfulness, or an earnest desire for the places of the past. Taking place in neighborhoods across Manchester, we present Hiraeth, one event bringing together three intimate performances. Exploring themes of home, family history and loss these events will be delivered in partnership with local charities and community groups. See contactmcr.com for further details. © Tamsin Drury

Fri 10 Mar, 5pm. £3.

Illness & identity How do we build new stories around ourselves to accommodate our illness and mortality? Do visible illnesses effect people’s sense of identity more than invisible ones, or just differently? What role does diagnosis play? Reflecting on the performance of There Is A Light: BRIGHTLIGHT by Contact Young Company, we present a discussion that considers the profound impact that illness can have on how we navigate the world, the experiences we have, the things we can do, our relationships with others and with ourselves.
