WELCOME

JANUARY – JULY 2016 AT CONTACT

Matt Fenton © Joel Chester Fildes

Spring/Summer at Contact sees one of the most exciting, diverse and provocative programmes you’re likely to find anywhere in the country. It includes outstanding theatre, dance, live art, spoken word, music and cabaret for audiences of all ages, plus some great exhibitions.

In a season of highlights, we recommend checking out the brilliant urban moves of Avant Garde Dance; the architectural performance of Reckless Sleepers; the funny and moving explorations of mental health by Bryony Kimmings and Kim Noble; and of course Queer Contact Festival, our annual celebration of the best LGBT art and culture. We’re really pleased to present new shows from Contact Young Company, 20 Stories High with Theatre-Rites, Quarantine and Le Gateau Chocolat. There’s a fantastic line-up for our Flying Solo Festival, showcasing the best of what happens when performers go it alone, including Contact commissions from Jenna Watt, Ria Hartley, Ben Mellor and Kate O’Donnell. The season culminates in July with our biennial international festival of young people’s theatre, Contacting the World. It’s going to be a busy few months, so we can’t wait to welcome you! RECKLESS SLEEPERS: NEGATIVE SPACE To begin, Reckless Sleepers built a room-sized wooden frame and lined it with plasterboard. For several weeks they started smashing it up, smashing it down, then piecing the fragments of their destruction back together. The result is this show, Negative Space. From a blank architectural canvas, something fantastical emerges. It’s a love story. It’s a slapstick comedy. It’s slasher, action, melodrama... and not a single word is spoken. Soon different possible stories are spiraling around, hurtling towards an ending.

THE AGENCY The Agency, our young entrepreneurship project with Battersea Arts Centre and People’s Palace Projects, London, has received £397,572 from the Big Lottery Fund to support young people in Manchester and London to transform ideas for making change in their own communities into real projects and social enterprises. The Agency helps young people to develop the skills and confidence needed to become more employable and entrepreneurial. Recently Agency staff and young people have presented keynotes at conferences in Stanford, USA, and Rio de Janeiro, and presented at the No Boundaries conference in Manchester. This is the third year of the programme and the success of previous projects evidence the incredible value that art and creativity have on transforming young lives, far beyond the normal reach of the arts.
